Lea Carol Topping
Lea Carol Ternes Topping, 46, Seminole, Fla., died July 22, 2000, at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. She was born in Flasher and moved to Florida from Cleveland in 1983. She worked as a group leader of inspections at Essilor of America, St. Petersburg, Fla., and graduated with honors from Pinellas Tech CMA class. She was a member of Pathways Community Church, Seminole. She is survived by her husband of seven years, Jim; two daughters, Audrey Herzner, Gulfport, Fla., and Xantippi Leska, Pinellas Park, Fla.; two sons, Russell and Roger Reed, both of Cleveland; her adoptive parents, Barbara and Duwayne Corn, Bensalem, Pa.; six brothers, David, Jeff and Fred Ternes, all of Bismarck, Michael Ternes Morgan, Pinellas Park, and Marlin and Jeff Corn, both of Bensalem; one sister, Sheila Arndt, Wichita, Kan.; her grandmother, Tina Morgan, St. Petersburg; and six grandchildren.
Mildred Uses Arrow
CANNON BALL -- Mildred Uses Arrow, 84, Cannon Ball, died Aug. 1, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Veterans Memorial Hall, Cannon Ball, with the Rev. John Floberg officiating. Burial will be in Old Scout Cemetery, Cannon Ball. A wake service will begin at 5 p.m. Monday at Veterans Memorial Hall. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Mildred was born Aug. 2, 1915, at Cannon Ball, to Thomas and Lucy (Ireland) Comes Last. She attended school in Fort Yates, the Bismarck Indian School and Cannon Ball public school. She worked as a nurse's aide for many years at St. Alexius in Bismarck. She also worked as an aid in Spearfish, S.D., and areas on the West Coast. She was married in 1931, to Sidney Cottonwood, until his death in 1951. They made their home in the Solen-Cannon Ball area. They had one son, Walter Cottonwood, who died in November 1997. In November 1952, she married Percy Uses Arrow in Timber Lake, S.D. They made their home in the Little Eagle, S.D. and Fort Yates area until his death in 1980. Since then she has lived in the Bismarck and Fort Yates areas. In 1945 she became a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Albert Grass Post 173, Cannon Ball-Solen, and has remained a member for the past 54 years. She had a deep pride and commitment to being a member of the auxiliary. She also felt it was a duty and responsibility to support our veterans in any way she could. Mildred enjoyed dancing and attending powwows. She was a backup singer for various drum groups and was a jingle-dress and traditional dancer. She won contest trophies for her dancing. She enjoyed beading, playing bingo and helping others. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Christine and John Notah, Parker, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a special sister, Victoria Joshua. Mildred was preceded in death by her husbands, Sidney Cottonwood and Percy Uses Arrow; her parents, Thomas and Lucy (Ireland) Comes Last; her son, Walter Cottonwood; two grandsons, Alton and Allen Paul Cottonwood; one brother, Emil Comes Last; and one adopted brother, Robert Two Bears.
Alma V. Johnson
WASHBURN -- Alma V. Johnson, 87, Washburn, died Aug. 3, 2000, in the Mott care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Edwin's Catholic Church, Washburn, with the Rev. Roger Synek officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn. Visitation will be from 1:30-6 p.m. Sunday at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn. A prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Alma Krebsbach was born July 31, 1913, at rural Max to Joseph and Margaret (Hall) Krebsbach. She attended St. Nickolaus School in Garrison, as well as rural school near Max. She moved with her family to Washburn in 1927, where her father became the McLean County Treasurer. She married L.J. "Chuck" Johnson on May 15, 1935, at Wilton. Mr. Johnson passed away on May 6, 1971. Alma was a true mother in every sense of the word with her children and grandchildren always utmost in her mind. Alma was noted for her excellent cooking and baking skills and she also enjoyed crocheting, knitting and visiting with neighbors and friends. Alma had a kind heart and was always willing to help others. She was well-known for babysitting for various families in Washburn. Alma will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law, Sister Donna Johnson, Annunciation Monastery, Bismarck, Cheryl and Roger Wingerter, Ridgefield, Wash., Dianne Wolf, Hazen, Maureen and Benjamin Kautzman, Mott, and Wanda and Dwayne Oster, Washburn; one son and daughter-in-law, Kirby and Linda Johnson, Mandan; one son-in-law, David Schuler, Edmore; 27 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Audrey and Arlan Johnson, Washburn, and Florence and Marvin Johnson, Sheridan, Wyo.; two sisters-in-law, Sadie Westberg, Seattle, and Violet Vogel, Tonica, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, L.J.; one daughter, Kay; one infant son, Lowell; three brothers, Earl, Roy and Joe; and three sister, Rose, Ione and Elda.

Darlene Arlys Watson, 64, Bismarck, died Aug. 5, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Sorenson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, where a family service will be held at 4 p.m. today. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. Darlene was born May 19, 1936, in the Baldwin-Regan area, the daughter of Andrew and Phillipena (Buchholz) Hochhalter. She was raised and educated in the Baldwin area. She married Robert E. Watson, July 3, 1960, in Wibaux, Mont. She worked for Apple Creek Country Club, North Dakota State Highway Department Lunchroom, and later as a babysitter, but her first love was being a homemaker for her family. Darlene is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Allen Schumacher, and their two daughters, Alicia and Rachel, all of Bismarck; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Randy and Natalie, and their child-to-be, and Ronnie, all of Bismarck; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Lillian Schafer, Ada and Richard John, all of Bismarck, and Norma John, Mandan; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Eugene and Wesley, both of Bismarck, and LeRoy and Myrna, Regan; two sisters-in-law, Rose Hochhalter, Mandan, and Magdalena Hochhalter, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents; three brothers, Theodore, Marvin and Robert; and two sisters, Elsie Fischer and Ruth Kautzman.

William Arthur Burns
William Arthur Burns, 79, Austin, Texas, died July 9, 2000. Burial was held at the Moran Cemetery, Moran, Texas, next to his parents and grandparents, Robert Emmet Burns and Molly O'Keeffe Burns. He was born in Albany, Texas on Sept. 1, 1920 to Dr. William Arthur Burns and Edith Blanche Jennings Burns. He lived his early years in Moran, Texas. He graduated from Austin High School and received a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Texas. He had a long career with Amoco, where he first became a refinery manager at the age of 35. He managed Amoco refineries in Savannah, Ga., Neodesha, Kan. and Mandan. He actively promoted land use policies at the Mandan refinery that benefited wildlife; for this effort, he received a National Audubon Society Award. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Betty June Siros Burns, Austin, the daughter of August James Siros and Jewell (Judy) Bedingfield; son, William A. Burns III, and his wife, Judith Warnock Burns, Houston, Texas, son, Michael Emmett Burns and ex-wife, Diana Sessions Burns, Dallas, Texas; daughter, Laurel Edith Burns, and her husband, Rainier Newberry, Fairbanks, Alaska; and son, Craig Bedingfield Burns, Mandan; his granchildren, William Scott Burns, New York City, Brian Patrick Burns, Taos, N.M., Mary Ann Morgan "Polly" Burns, Albuquerque, N.M., Martin Andrew Newberry and Emily Julia Burns, Fairbanks, and Constance Sessions Burns, and great-grandson, Barron Scott Zimmermann, Paradise, Calif., Robert Emmett Burns, his only brother, deceased, survived by wife, Dorothy Blalock Burns and their five daughters, Kathryn Burns Whaley, Susan Burns Peterson, Becky Burns Blackstock, Patricia Burns Vick and Mary Beth Burns LaVergne. Robert "Bob" and Dorothy Burns have eight grandchildren.
