GRAND FORKS -- Curtis Sorbo, 83, Grand Forks, formerly of Bismarck, died Aug. 13, 2000 in a Grand Forks hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at University Lutheran Church, Grand Forks, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Bernice; two sons, Keith, Ogden, Utah, and Curtis Allen Jr., Adams; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Janice Monson, Edinburg, and Cleo Stenseth, Grand Forks. Elmer Wahl
Elmer Wahl, 83, died Aug. 11, 2000 at a care center in Eagan, Minn. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at Bismarck Baptist Church with the Revs. Don Barnett and Clyde Zimbelman officiating. Burial will be in McClusky City Cemetery at 2 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Elmer was born Oct. 14, 1916, the son of Fred and Minnie (Huether) Wahl. He grew up in the McClusky area. On June 12, 1943, he married Ella Weippert. After farming for 34 years, near McClusky, they retired to Bismarck. Elmer enjoyed working with his angus cattle and planting and harvesting his crops. He is survived by his daughter, Corliss Wahl, Woodbury, Minn.; and two sisters, Pearl Berg, Rupert, Idaho, and Laura Zimbelman, Sauk Centre, Minn. DICKINSON -- Kathryn Anton, 68, Dickinson, died July 30, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Theodore Benishek
NEW SALEM -- Theodore "Ted" Benishek, 79, New Salem, died July 29, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Loren Strum officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, New Salem. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Chapel, New Salem, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Theodore was born July 23, 1921, near New Salem, the son of Charles and Pauline (Kaelberer) Benishek. A graduate of Dickinson State College, he taught in various country schools prior to taking over the family farm. In January of 1997, he moved into New Salem. Ted was an avid reader. He is survived by his niece, Jill Guest and her husband, Jim, Deadwood, S.D.; his nephews, Charles Gordon and his wife, Paula, Houston, Texas, and Rob Gordon and his wife, Michelle, Rapid City, S.D.; three grand-nephews, Courtney Guest, and Christopher and Sebastian Gordon; three grand-nieces, Kacey Guest, Alejandra Gordon and Grace Gordon; two aunts, Esther and Edna Kaelberer, New Salem; and his uncle, John Kaelberer, New Salem. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Richard Gordon.
Alice Burnett
Alice Burnett of San Jose, Calif., died July 22, 2000, in a San Jose hospital after a short illness. Memorial services were held July 26 at Campbell Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Los Gatos Memorial Park, San Jose. She was born Oct. 25, 1923, at Wilton, the daughter of Nick and Anna (Babnick) Sologuk. She was raised and educated in Wilton. She moved to the Seattle-Tacoma area and was employed as a telephone operator for a number of years. Later they moved to San Jose. She married Ray Burnett in November 1949, in Stockton, Calif. She was employed at the Campbell Senior Center for a few years where she retired from. She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Chris, Hollister, Calif., Terry and Traci, San Jose, Mickey and Gerrie, Manteca, Calif., and Denis and Nellitta, San Jose; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Braun, San Jose; and one sister, Ernestine Voegele, Bismarck. She was the cherished grandmother of seven; great-grandmother of four; and five days after she died, another grandson was born, Robert Ryan. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Bobby; and one brother, Harry. Mom will be greatly missed by all.

Laura Mae Fossum
Laura Mae Fossum, 45, 1627 Oakland Drive, died of cancer, July 30, 2000, in her home. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Tom Dunham officiating. Laura (Hoggarth) Fossum, the daughter of Darwin and Shirley (Neva) Hoggarth, was born May 14, 1955, in a Jamestown hospital. She was raised and educated in Kensal, graduating from Kensal High School in 1973. On Oct. 2, 1987, she was married to Jerry Fossum in Bismarck. Laura worked at MDU Resources Group Inc. for over 25 years. The biggest joys in her life were her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Jerry; twin daughters, Vicki and Katie; her parents, Darwin and Shirley Hoggarth, Jamestown; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ameta and Mark Schlecht, Jamestown, and Brenda and Rob McDonnell, West Fargo; one brother and sister-in-law, John Hoggarth and Teri Searle, Jamestown; five nieces and three nephews; her grandmother, Anna W. Neva, Jamestown; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Laura was preceded in death by her two grandfathers; one grandmother and one aunt. Martha Giese
Martha Giese, 89, died July 29, 2000, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Evangel Temple, Bismarck, with the Revs. Roger Will and Lloyd Jorgenson officiating. Burial will be in Glen Ullin Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. Martha Mindt was born Sept. 18, 1910, in Blue Grass, the daughter of Peter and Katherina (Schmierer) Mindt. She married Peter Ballensky, Dec. 3, 1930, at the Blue Grass Congregational Church. He died May 11, 1973. In 1988, she married Sam Giese at the Evangel Temple, Bismarck. He died April 18, 1994. She is survived by four children, James and Connie Ballensky, Minot, Dell and Reuben Unruh, Bismarck, Mildred and Roy Holbrook, Vancouver, Wash., and Arlene and Dan Anderson, Fort Myers, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Betty, Shirley and Gladys; one brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Emma Mindt, Bismarck; three sisters, Alvina Wetzel, Freda Redmann and Rose Sorge, all of Bismarck; one sister-in-law, Ida Mindt, Hebron; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Peter Ballensky and Sam Giese; three brothers, Gottlieb, Adam and George; and five sisters, Elsie, Bertha, Erma, Eva and Kathryn.
Daniel O. Heringer
GOODRICH -- The Rev. Daniel O. Heringer, 79, Goodrich, died July 29, 2000, in his home in Goodrich. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Goodrich, with burial in Goodrich Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky. He was born Nov. 28, 1920, at Lambert, Mont., to Paul and Martha Heringer. He grew up in the Lambert area and graduated from high school there. He graduated in 1944 from St. Paul Bible Institute. He married Janice C. Sime on Feb. 3, 1945, in Milwaukee, Wis., and they were married for 50 years when she died on June 3, 1995. His ministry included churches in Milwaukee, Cass Lake, Minn., the Fort Belknap Reservation near Harlem, Mont., McLaughlin, S.D., Lehr, Sumner, Iowa, and West Union, Iowa. In June 1973 they moved to Goodrich and he ministered at the First Baptist Church through September 1983. He continued to live in Goodrich while serving the First Baptist Church in Max and at Beulah Baptist and Washburn Baptist churches. His last full time pastorate was at the Mercer Baptist Church. While serving in Mercer, he conducted the Summer Sunday morning services at Brush Lake, which he continued until his death on July 29, 2000. He served on numerous denominational boards and committees including the Bismarck Baptist Home. He drove school bus in many of the communities in which he lived and enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, gardening and recently making word puzzles based on the Bible. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Earleen and Glenn Miller, Goodrich; two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Geri Heringer, Aurora, Ill., Rodger and Barbara Heringer, Ladner, British Columbia, Canada; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Heringer, Lambert; and one sister, Sarah Walker, Hale, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his daughter, Karen; one brother, Eugene; and two sisters, Selma and Martha.

Grace I. (Bayley) Johnson, 76, Jamestown, died July 30, 2000, in her home. She is survived by her husband, George; five daughters, Jeanette Shempert, Clackamas, Ore., Marilyn Downey, Superior, Wis., Judy Bolek, LaMoure, Linda Whitrmore, Lynchburg, Va., and Becky Lucci, San Antonio, Texas; 17 grandchildren; five sisters, Mae Paulson, Stanley, Ruth Senn, Jamestown, Maxine Dortch, Flagstaff, Ariz., Margaret Samuelson, Jamestown, and Shirley Disher, Fargo; and three brothers, Warren Bayley, Jr., Page, Arthur Bayley, Fargo, and Roger Bayley, Valley City. Olga Johnson
MANFRED -- Olga Johnson, 85, rural Manfred, died July 30, 2000, in the Harvey medical center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Vang Lutheran Church, Manfred, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Olga was born Dec. 16, 1914, to Ole and Annie Opsal at rural Manfred. She finished the eighth grade at the age of 11, spent a year at home and then attended Harvey High School, graduating in 31Ú2 years at the age of 15. She attended Minot State College and taught school for several years before her marriage. On June 24, 1939, she was married to Leslie Johnson in Harvey, and she lived all of her life on their farm near Manfred. Olga was a leader in community, state and national organizations working to advance opportunities for handicapped individuals. She was a founder and charter member of both the North Dakota Association for Retarded Citizens and the Central Association for Retarded Citizens. She was a two-term president of the NDARC and served on the board of directors for many years. Olga coordinated and served on an educational panel that traveled to every area of the state working to establish special education classrooms in the schools. She helped set up a scholarship fund for training special education teachers and served on a steering committee to assist in organizing local ARC chapters in communities around the state. Olga's testimony at numerous legislative hearings was instrumental in securing rights and educational opportunities for the handicapped. In 1967, Olga was invited to the White House to witness the signing of a bill into law by President Johnson. Olga served on the Task Force Committee on Manpower, Training and Research, working to examine ways and means of providing for the needs of North Dakota. She represented North Dakota at regional leadership training seminars in Chicago and Indianapolis and a taught leadership training sessions across North Dakota. Civic and service organizations often called upon Olga as a consultant and speaker relating to issues of the handicapped. Olga was an active member of Vang Lutheran Church in Manfred where she had served as church secretary, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She also held various offices in the Vang Evangelical Lutheran Church Women and served as a delegate at district, state and national conventions. She helped organize and was a charter member of the Manfred Homemakers Club and had been active in this organization for over 50 years. She also served on the Wells County Homemakers Council. She was a 4-H leader for many years and attended a 4-H Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. She was a lifetime member of the Sons of Norway and was the Norwegian language teacher for the Fagerland Lodge of Manfred. She was active in the Farm Bureau Women, serving as both state and national delegates at farm bureau conventions. As a young child, Olga learned to play guitar from her mother, and she passed on this legacy to her children. She loved music and her rich alto voice added to many singing groups throughout the years. One of Olga's favorite things to do was to travel with her husband. They traveled on five continents and, in later years, took close to 20 trips by cruise ship. Olga could read and speak three languages, was an avid reader and an unpublished writer. Olga is survived by her husband of 61 years, Leslie; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry, Salinas, Calif., Jim and Shirley, Stanton, and David and Peggy, Minot; three daughters, Laverne Johnson and Dianne Aull, both of Bismarck, and Marilyn Sjaastad, Santa Fe, N.M.; eight grandchildren, Don and Stephen Johnson, Jamie and Laura Johnson, and Kylah, Jessie, Lindsey and Benjamin Aull; one great-grandson, Nicholas Johnson; and one sister, Martha Mathison, Harvey. Olga was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant brother.
