Marie Bartholmy
Marie Elizabeth Bartholmy, 90, Bismarck, died Sept. 10, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Scranton, with the Rev. John Mathaiwwill officiating. Special music will be by Debbie Freitag and Joanne Bartholmy. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A rosary will be said at 9:40 a.m. Monday at the church.
Marie Bartholmy was born Jan. 28, 1908, at St. Paul, Minn., the daughter of Conrad and Anna (Bartelmy) Bartholmy. As an infant she moved with her family to a homestead northeast of Scranton in November 1908. She was raised there and attended rural Washington School. She graduated from Scranton High School in 1925. Marie attended business college in Fargo and was employed in Fargo by the U.S. Veterans Administration until 1941 when she moved to Spokane, Wash. She was employed there by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service until 1942 when she was transferred to Portland, Ore. She transferred to Washington, D.C. in 1954. She retired from civil service in 1963 and moved to Bismarck. She worked parttime in various state agencies at the Capitol building. She also worked at Wylie Piano Co., Dempsey Tegler Stockbrokers, and later did extensive work for the Right To Life Association, writing news letters.
She was a member of Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Bismarck, where she did volunteer work. She lived in her own home until December 1989, when she moved to Marillac Manor. Marie enjoyed traveling, and through the years traveled to Europe, the Orient, Mexico, Canada, Cuba and many other countries. She was a quiet and reserved individual who enjoyed her independence. Her family was important to her and she enjoyed visiting with them and with her many friends.
Marie had a special touch with children, as they always congregated around her at family reunions and she would entertain them for hours. She was kind, gentle and loving, and she will be missed by her family and friends in various communities where she touched so many in such a special way.
She is survived by one brother, Ray, Bowman; one niece and her husband, Alice and Larry Wahl, Bismarck; four nephews and their wives, Don and Paulette Olson, Bismarck, James Bartholmy, Scranton, David Bartholmy, Ankeny, Iowa, and Roger and Joanne Bartholmy, Scranton; five grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Lillian Teigen and Margaret Olson.
Pallbearers will be Roger Bartholmy, Don Olson, Donald Wanek, Vernon Rath, James Bartholmy and LeRoy Wold. Honorary pallbearers will be her family, friends and neighbors. (Krebsbach Funeral Service, Bowman)
Lydia Bickel
GLEN ULLIN -- Lydia Bickel, 87, Glen Ullin, died Sept. 11, 1998, in Glen Ullin. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, Glen Ullin, with burial in Glen Ullin Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A prayer service will begin at 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Lydia Breimeier was born Nov. 26, 1910, in Mercer County, the daughter of Fredrick and Magdalena (Auwinger) Breimeier. She was raised and educated in Mercer County.
She worked on the family farm until she married Henry Bickel, Nov. 11, 1930, at Bluegrass. They farmed and made their home near Bluegrass. In June 1973 they retired and moved into Glen Ullin to live out their retirement years. Lydia enjoyed her garden, listening to old-time music, and was a member of the kitchen band at the senior citizens center. Due to declining health, she entered the Marian Manor Care Center in Glen Ullin in January 1994, where she has made her home since.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her husband, Henry; one daughter and son-in-law, Gertha and Ray Hoffman, Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Delmer and Helen, Bismarck, and Marvin and Louise, Glen Ullin; six grandchildren, Mark and Patrick Hoffman, Kim Jondahl, Bonnie Kroh, Nolan Bickel and Nancy Huber; five great-grandchildren, Barry Kroh, Michael and Megan Jondahl, William Bickel and T.J. Huber; and five sisters, Ella Bickel, Bismarck, Erna Anderson, Lodi, Calif., Esther Degel, Bellview, Wash., Gertie Bauer, New Salem, and Selma Hasse, Rockford, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, William, Paul and Fred; and two infant sisters.
Gordon Sperling
Dr. Gordon J. Sperling, 71, Bismarck, died Sept. 9, 1998, in Fort Collins, Colo., as a result of injuries he sustained in an automobile accident. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Bradley R. Stoltenow officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Bismarck.
Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue one hour before services at the church. There will be a prayer service at 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Gordon James Sperling was born Sept. 23, 1926, at Jud, in LaMoure County, the son of Gottfried J. and Anna E. (Jahn) Sperling. He attended grade and high school in Jud, and graduated as valedictorian of his high school class in May 1944.
After attending Jamestown College for one year, he entered St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., from which he graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 1948. Following one year of public school teaching, he entered the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pa.
At the close of his senior year, he was designated one of the top 10 seminarian-preachers of the year in the United States and Canada by the Pulpit magazine and the Chicago Sunday Evening Club. He received his master of arts degree in 1953 and his doctor of philosophy degree in 1967 from the School of Education, New York University, New York City. Both of these degrees were taken in the field of religious education.
He served as an instructor in Christianity at Midland College, Fremont, Neb. from 1955 to 1956. For the six years following he served as field deputy county superintendent of schools of Burleigh County in Bismarck.
In 1962 he moved to New York City where he worked for the Lutheran Student Foundation of Greater New York. Later he was appointed administrative assistant to the secretary of the Lutheran Church in America. Gordon liked working with college-age students, and was appointed, first as assistant to the dean, and later assistant academic dean at Wagner College, Staten Island, N.Y., and served for eight years in these capacities. Later he also served as recorder of ordinations for the church pension fund of the Episcopal Church in New York City. While living in New York City, he gave more than 800 volunteer hours at the Help Line Telephone Center as a telephone counselor.
He retired Jan. 1, 1993, and moved to Bismarck. In the fall of 1994 he went to Macau (China) where he acted as a missionary for the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. In this capacity he was a tutor in English to faculty members at the Concordia School of Special Education for deaf students. He returned to Bismarck in May of 1995.
Gordon followed the Christian faith and professed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church and at the time of his death he was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck.
He loved to travel and set foot on six of the seven continents during his lifetime.
He is survived by his nephews, Michael Nolan, Hudson, Wis., and Theodore Nolan, Milwaukee, Wis.; his brother-in-law, William Nolan, Germantown, Wis.; and many much loved relatives and loyal friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Lucille.
Walter Bauer
ASHLEY -- Walter Bauer, 84, Ashley, died Dec. 24, 1997, in the Ashley nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Ashley Baptist Church, with the Rev. Darwin Stahl officiating. Burial will be in Ashley Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, at Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
Casketbearers will be Donald Dockter, Harold Dockter, Vernon Meidinger, and Otto Rasch, all of Ashley, Clarence Rall, Aberdeen, S.D., and Carl Kielb, Lisbon. Honorary casketbearers will be William Baumann, Ben Lang, and Ted Woehl, all of Ashley.
Walter Bauer was born in Lehr on Oct. 22, 1913 to Christ and Margaret (Goebel) Bauer. The Bauer family moved to Ashley in 1922. Walter attended school in Ashley and graduated in May of 1933. Walter married Esther Schulz on April 1, 1934. He started working for the Soo Line Railroad in 1935, and became section foreman in 1954, they moved to Wishek and he was foreman there until 1958. In 1961, he became foreman at Ashley and held this position until his retirement on January 15, 1975.
He was a member of Ashley Baptist Church, and former member of First Baptist Church, where he was a church trustee and Sunday School superintendent. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and the Mens Quartet.
He is survived by his wife, Esther; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Carole, El Paso, Texas; two grandchildren, Amber and her husband Carl Kielb, Lisbon, and Courtney James, a student in Bismarck; one great-granddaughter, Alexandra Kielb, Lisbon, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arthur Mahowald
GARRISON -- Arthur "Art" Mahowald, 80, Garrison, died Dec. 25, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Garrison, with the Rev. Hugo Blotsky officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The organist will be Marilyn Ireland, and the pallbearers will be Dennis Thompson, Dr. Kermit Leonard, Jim Fischer, Randy Jorgenson, Jim Robinson, and D.F. Schmidt.
Art was born May 23, 1917, on the family farm southwest of Garrison, a son of William and Margaret (Ryan) Mahowald. He grew up and attended school in Garrison and graduated from Garrison High School. On Aug. 10, 1948, he married Edna Arndt in Garrison. He started working at Garrison State Bank in 1936 and worked there until retiring in 1978.
During his banking career, Art was president of the Western North Dakota Chapter of the Bank Administration Institute. He was the city auditor in Garrison for many years and was active with the North Dakota League of Municipalities. Art was active in various civic organizations. He served as the McLean County Treasurer for the North Dakota Mental Health Association. He also served as the McLean County Chairman for the United States Savings Bond Program.
He is survived by his wife, Edna; one son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Kayla Kaul-Mahowald, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Jeff Glasser, Bismarck; four grandchildren, Michael and Megan Mahowald, and Jack and Anastasia Glasser, all of Bismarck.

Pauline Boeckel
