Hans Moen
ROLLA -- Hans Moen, 86, Rolla, died April 13, 1998. Services will be held at 10-30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Joachim Catholic Church, Rolla. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Rock Lake.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; one daughter, Dalene Langan, Bismarck; two sons, Brian and Blaine, both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and three sisters, Carrie Wood, Rolla, Ann Fredine, Cambridge, Minn., and Oline Hogenson, Cando. (Niewoehner Funeral Home, Rolla)

Margie Mae Geyer
Margie Mae Geyer, 76, Peoria, Ariz., and formerly of Bismarck, died March 27, 1998, in Peoria. Memorial services will be held in Atascadero, Calif., on April 26.

She is survived by one sister, Genece Nelson, Atascadero; one brother, Rogert Hesketh; one daughter, Jill Workman, Peoria; and one son, Robert Geyer, Washington State.

Bertha Boeckel
BEULAH -- Bertha Boeckel, 85, Beulah, died April 13, 1998, in the Beulah nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Friday, at Church of God, Beulah. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She is survived by five daughters, Loretta Hart, Ontario, Calif., Hilma Curtis, Cheney, Wash., Doris Beckman, Emmett, Idaho, Elaine Walker, Zap, and Berniece M. Scheid, Beulah; one son, Albert L. Jr., New Rockford; three sisters, Eva Flemmer, Golden Valley, Freda Pederson, Gladstone, Ore., and Ella Blanchard, West Port, Wash.; and four brothers, Arthur Oberlander, Hubbard, Ore., Edward Oberlander, Alhomabra, Calif., William Oberlander, Lemmon, S.D., and Louie Oberlander, Milwaukie, Ore. (Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah)

Jacob Friedt
MOTT -- Services for Jacob A. Friedt, 77, Mott, will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Saturday at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, Mott, with the Rev. Dennis Schafer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today and 1-6 p.m. Friday at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at the church.

Serving as casketbearers will be his grandsons, and as giftbearers, his granddaughters. Special music will be provided by Pat Schwartz, organist, Diane Friedt, soloist, and Margaret Blickensderfer, violinist.

Jacob Alex Friedt was born Feb. 8, 1921, on a farm north of Mott, to Alexander and Anna (Hellman) Friedt. He was educated in a rural school close to the farmstead. He was married to Emma Klein, May 26, 1947, at St. Michael's Catholic Church. They farmed north of Mott until 1991, when they retired and moved into Mott. Jacob entered Good Samaritan Nursing Center in 1993. He passed away there April 13, 1998, at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 5 days.

Jacob was a self-taught mechanic and spent most of his life repairing and overhauling farm machinery and cars for neighbors and friends. He owned and operated Friedt Garage in Mott.

Jacob also loved music and started a band with his brothers called the Silver Kings. They played for many weddings, anniversaries and barn dances. He later played with his brother-in-law, Frank Klein. Jacob was a member of the 2826 Council of Knights of Columbus and achieved the Honor of Fourth Degree.

He is survived by his wife, Emma; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Cheryl, and Kerry and Donna, all of Mott; three daughters and sons-in-law, Roberta and Leo Frieze, Bismarck, Kathy and Mick Wangsvick, Mott, and Karen and Dave Pekas, Hettinger; 10 grandsons, Adrian and Joshua Friedt, Aaron, Jason and Steven Frieze, Jared Wangsvick, Torrey and James Pekas, Michael and Mason Friedt; four granddaughters, Aimee Friedt, Janel and Janine Wangsvick, and Melissa Friedt; five brothers, Ralph, Rochester, Minn., Alex and Bill, both of Mott, Victor, Grants, N.M., and Val, Mott; and one sister, Ann Bergenheier, Dickinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and two sisters.

Walter Schatz
Walter A. Schatz, 70, 1444 Eastwood St., died April 14, 1998, in his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck, with the Rev. Marvin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Friday at Boelter Funeral Home, where a parish rosary and vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.

Walter was born Jan. 1, 1928, on the family farm near Balfour, the son of Adam and Agnes (Leier) Schatz. He was raised and educated in rural schools, and farmed near Balfour. Walter married Bernadine Leier, June 18, 1951, in Balfour. They farmed southwest of Balfour. They moved to Bismarck in 1977. They retired from farming in 1981. While in Bismarck he was known as "The Handyman Carpenter."

He was a life member of Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing and camping.

He is survived by his wife, Bernadine; nine sons, Brian and Becky, Hazen, and Kevin and Cindy, Bruce and Mickey, Toby and Luiza, Kerry and Cheryl, all of Bismarck, Kurt and Donna, Minot, Neil and Peggy, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Perry and Robin, Bettendorf, Iowa, Darcy and Bridget, Beaver Lake, Neb.; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Tillie and Mike Kuntz, Eleanor and Mike Boehm, Edith and Dick Schall, all of Minot, Irene Stevens, Waterloo, Iowa, Isabelle and Joe Karas, Glenwood City, Wis., and Helen and Pete Weninger, Balfour; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard and Clara, Whittier, Calif., and Jerald and Eileen, Velva; 20 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one sister.

Ruth Braus
Ruth Braus, 87, Bismarck, died April 14, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 8th St. and Broadway Ave., Bismarck, with the Rev. Charles Heidt officiating and the Rev. Theodore Gustin concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:30-9 p.m. today, at St. Mary's Church, Bismarck, where a rosary and vigil service will be said at 7 p.m. tonight. Visitation continues from noon until service time on Friday.

Ruth was born on Nov. 14, 1910 in Cavalier County, the daughter of Francis and Mary (Murphy) Hanggi. She graduated from high school and college in Valley City. She honored her marriage and devoted her life to family, education, teaching school and communicating with her God. She expanded her world through travel, music and literature.

She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her children, James and Joyce Braun, Kingwood, Texas; Richard and Nancy Braus, Houston, Texas; Steven and Liz Braus, Bismarck; Mary Kay and Vincent Hunt, Pawtucket, R.I.; and Ruth Mary and Jack Steffes, Sartell, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 16 nieces and nephews; and two sisters, Frances "Happy" Burns, Bowman, and Bertha Dunnigan, Cut Bank, Mont.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Matt; her parents; one daughter, Sister Jude Braus, OSB; two infant brothers; and two sisters, Margie Burke and Marie Bollinger.

Memorials are preferred to the Sister Jude Braus Scholarship Fund or St. Mary's Parish Family. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

She honored her marriage and devoted her life to family, education, teaching children and communicating with God.

Rose Mertz
Rose Mertz, 96, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, formerly of Wilton, died April 15, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunne Lutheran Church, Wilton, with the Rev. Paul Schauer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday at Boelter Funeral Home, and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Rose was born Aug. 31, 1901, the daughter of Frederick and Rosina (Heidt) Mertz, on the homestead of the family farm north of Goodrich in Sheridan County. She married Lee Mertz, June 18, 1918, at Goodrich. They farmed in the Goodrich, Wing and Tuttle areas. In 1942 they moved to Wilton, where she lived until 1996. Rose worked at North Dakota State Capitol Lunchroom for several years.

Rose was the oldest member of Sunne Lutheran Church. She was well known for her large gardens, canning, baking, crocheting and sewing. She enjoyed the company of others, and preparing meals for them all.

She is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Evelyn and Joe Hruby, Wilton, Ruth Deckert, Arena, Ella and Melvin Bucholz, Bismarck, and Jeannette and Peter Elichuk, Wilton; two sons and daughters-in-law, LeRoy and Margaret, Bismarck, and James and Lois, Wilton; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died April 6, 1962; one daughter, Viola; one son-in-law, Bernard; one brother; and four sisters.

Celia Balzer
Celia Balzer, 86, Roscoe, Ill., and formerly of Bismarck, died April 16, 1998, in a Roscoe hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, at Sunset Funeral Home, Rockford, Ill. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Celia was born on Sept. 24, 1911, in Bismarck, the daughter of Valentine and Mary (Volk) Keller. She is a former resident of Bismarck and Grand Forks. She moved to Roscoe within the last four years. She married Peter Balzer on Sept. 19, 1930. She was a homemaker most of her life.

She was a member of Pasadena, Calif., Chapter of the Catholic Daughters of America for 18 years. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, cake decorating and painting.

She is survived by her husband, Peter; three sons and and two daughters-in-law, Gerald and Eunice, Bismarck, John and Patricia, Rockton, Ill., and Gene, Salt Lake City, Utah; one daughter and son-in-law, Marlys and Charles Balzer Dowler, Sun Valley, Nev.; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three brothers; and two sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers and one sister. (Sunset Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Rockford)

Emma Maas
HAZEN -- Emma Maas, 86, Hazen, died April 14, 1998, in a Beulah nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Monday, at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen. Further arrangements are pending with Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.

Angelina Maas
HAZEN -- Angelina A. Maas, 88, Hazen, died April 15, 1998, in a Hazen nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Saturday, at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters, Margene Granfor, Wilton, and Luella Davidson, Walden, N.Y.; and four sisters, Erna Simpfenderfer, Bismarck, Ida Jassman and Hertha Treude, both of Spokane, Wash., and Irene Olmstead, Parshall. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

Ella Palmer

Cornelia Olson
NEW ROCKFORD -- Cornelia Olson, 86, New Rockford, died April 16, 1998, in a New Rockford nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden.

Anton Martin
GLADSTONE -- Anton Martin, 70, Gladstone, died April 16, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Clara Tostenson
LEEDS -- Clara Tostenson, 79, rural Leeds, died April 16, 1998, at her home. Arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds.

Martin Bergstedt
HALLIDAY -- Martin F. Bergstedt, 76, Halliday, died April 16, 1998, at his son's home in Hazen, following a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday, at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah, with the Revs. John Mundfrom and Kris Nyman officiating. Burial will be in Halliday Cemetery, with full military rites provided by Fiegel-Fisher American Legion Post No. 258, Halliday.

Visitation will be from 1-6 p.m. MDT Monday, at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Martin was born at Jordan, Mont., a son of the Rev. Dietrich and Anna (Wittig) Bergstedt. He received his elementary education at Ashley country schools. In 1936, the family moved to Halliday, where Martin farmed. He attended Hanson Auto Mechanical School in Fargo. Martin was known for his carpentry, repair work and has helped many people. Honesty and his love for God and country were of high priority. From 1943 to 1946, he served with the 86th Signal Corp of the Black Hawk Division of the U.S. Army and attained the rank of T/SGT. On May 15, 1946, Martin married Lillian Schaper in Halliday, where they have resided since. Martin owned and operated Bergstedt Implement of Halliday from 1948 (expanding to Hazen in 1976) until he retired in 1982. His cancer was diagnosed in January of 1998.

Martin was active in many church and community functions, including the Republican Party. The highlights of all his years of volunteer service were his work with Gideons International and being a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Beulah.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lillian; four sons and daughters-in-law, Arvin and Joanne, and Joel and Julie, all of Hazen, David and Barbara, Wimbledon, and Dean and Sonja, Killdeer; two daughters and sons-in-law, Laurel and Bill Tveit, and Cheryleen and Jerome Conner, all of Hazen; 21 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Herman, Dayton, Ohio; one sister, Dorothea Ziegler, Dickinson; numerous nieces and nephews; and one aunt, Margaret Wittig, Nebraska.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents, Dietrich and Anna; two granddaughters; his brother, Fritz; and four uncles and one aunt.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Gideons International. (Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen)
