Hertha Oster
Hertha Oster, 88, 322 N. 15th St., Bismarck, died April 13, 1998, at her home. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Joel Sherer officiating. Burial will be in Glueckstal Cemetery, Tappen.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Chapel and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
Hertha Rosina Werre was born on July 10, 1909, in Kidder County, the daughter of Jacob and Katherina (Kaiser) Werre. Hertha married Gottlieb Oster on Nov. 13, 1928. They farmed south of Tappen from 1928 until 1950. They then moved to Bismarck in 1951.
Hertha was employed with G.P. Hotel, Bismarck Hospital and Woodhouse Cafe. She did volunteer work and was active in directing choir for the German Singers.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and active in church organizations, especially Friendship Circle.
Her hobbies included crocheting and quilting.
She is survived by her husband, Gottlieb; her children, Harry and JoAnn Oster, Lorraine and Clayton Maw, Arthur and Jeanette Oster, Delores and Leo Dockter, Shirley and Glenn Schulz, and Deborah Oberlander and Randy Diede, all of Bismarck, and Vernon and Linda Oster, Des Allemands, La.; 30 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; seven great great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Anna Martin, Frieda Martin, Mathilda Zimmerman and Emma Johns.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Katherina and Jacob Werre; her daughter, Irene Chmielewski; two great-grandchildren, Daniel Cole Lacher and Nicole Coggins; two sisters, Mary Strobel and Adelia Adams; and four brothers, Christ Werre, Arthur J. Adriel Starr
FORT YATES -- Adriel Julian Starr, 19, Fort Yates, died April 13, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital, due to complications from an automobile accident. A traditional service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Fort Yates, with the Revs. Elongovan Anandan and Felix Kidder officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A visitation and wake service begins at 5 p.m. Friday, at Fort Yates High School Gym. Visitation at the Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, is from 1-3 p.m. Friday.
A.J. was born on April 27, 1978, in Bismarck to Elmer White J. and Marvine Starr Fasthorse. He grew up in Cannon Ball and attended Cannon Ball-Solen, Fort Yates Public and Standing Rock Grant schools. He was the salutatorian of the class of 1996 and loved sports, participating in cross country, track and basketball.
He held numerous class officer positions, was on the Honor Society, Indian Club, Math and Science Club, SADD Chapter, Student Council, drama, band and received the science student of the year award.
A.J. attended BSC and was attending Sitting Bull College, where he was a math tutor and played on the basketball team. He also was skilled as a traditional dancer.
A.J. is survived by his mother and stepfather, Marvine and Larry Fasthorse, Fort Yates; his father, Elmer White Jr., Spirit Lake, S.D.; two brothers, Brandon and Larson Fasthorse; his grandparents, Marvin Starr, Fort Yates, Joann Kidder, Fort Yates, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer White Sr., Spirit Lake; his uncles, George "Jimmy" and Sharon Starr, and children, Kasey and Danielle, Ronald Starr and daughter, Belle Josey Starr; Snuff Starr; Bisco Starr and son, Dorian; adopted brothers, Felix Young Bird, Wayne Bradley, Hans Young Bird, Jay Bearstail, Russell Bradley, Jeremey Lester, Joe Bearstail and Mike Red Tomahawk. Robert Ward
Robert E. Ward, 69, Lincoln, died April 12, 1998, at his home of heart failure. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dale Nabben officiating. Burial will be held in Memory Gardens, Concord, Calif.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to service time today at Bismarck Funeral Home.
Robert was born April 17, 1928, in Oakland, Calif., the son of John and Verla (Carothers) Ward. He grew up and lived his whole life in the California Bay area until 1988, when he moved to Bismarck.
He married Yvonne Frangenberg on March 4, 1967 in Reno, Nev. They renewed their vows in 1987 at Peace Lutheran Church in Lincoln.
Robert loved to be with children. He played Santa at the Kirkwood Mall for the past five years and the Easter Bunny for two years. He also was an avid bowler. Robert was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Lincoln.
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne; one daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Buck Ramsey, Ione, Calif.; three sons and one daughter-in-law, John and Sandy, and Danny, all of Concord, Calif., and Bill, Redding, Calif.; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Jan and Harry Lambrecht, Mandan; one granddaughter, Trudy, Lincoln; 13 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one step great-granddaughter; one brother and sister-in-law, Jacque and Dude Ward, Oregon; and one sister, Noreen Pritchat, Spokane, Wash.
He was preceded in death by one son, PFC Robert W. Ward; and his parents.

Margo Aichele
BALDWIN -- Margo Aichele, 57, Baldwin, died April 14, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital, after a brief battle with cancer. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Sunne Lutheran Church, six miles east of Wilton, on Highway 36, with the Rev. Paul Schauer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Margo E. Strand was born on Aug. 28, 1940, in Bismarck, the daughter of Arnold O. and Olive E. (Johnson) Strand. She grew up and attended school in Bismarck, graduating from Bismarck High School in 1958.
She married Tom Aichele on March 11, 1960, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck. They lived in Northwood for three years before returning to live in Bismarck. They managed the Airport Bar and Cafe until they started farming in the Baldwin area. They operated their grain and dairy farm for 27 years.
She is survived by her husband, Tom; one son, Tom Jr., and one grandson, Dustin, both of Baldwin; one brother and sister-in-law, Arnie and Dianne Strand, Jamestown; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Kay and Jerry Kautzman, Oxbow, Judi and Mike Thompson, Blaine, Minn., Patti and Jerry Landry, Sun Lakes, Ariz. and Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Jane and Mike Bartholomay, Oxbow; her mother-in-law, Alvina Aichele, Bismarck; and three nieces and nine nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Bertha Mittleider
JAMESTOWN -- Bertha Mittleider, 90, Jamestown, died April 13, 1998, in Jamestown. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Zion United Methodist Church, Tappen, with the Rev. Grant Piehl officiating. Burial will be in Fisher Cemetery, Tappen.
Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today and 9-11:30 a.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Steele, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Bertha Mittleider was born Dec. 15, 1907, south of Tappen, the daughter of Jacob and Fredricka (Weisser) Doerr. She was raised and educated in rural schools. She and Fred Mittleider were married on March 24, 1931.
They farmed south of Tappen until moving to town in 1953. In 1987, she moved to Jamestown, where she has since resided.
She loved crocheting, quilting, and enjoyed canning from her big garden.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Viona and Edward Zimmerman, Jamestown, Delilah Roesler, Bismarck, and Darlene and Edwin Simonson, Fargo; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Leo and Loretta, and Elton, all of Jamestown, Clarence and Evangeline, Glendale, Ariz., and Melvin, Tappen; 26 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Theresa Chimeleski, Tappen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred in 1974; two brothers, Jacob and August Doerr; and three sisters, Pauline Reiker, Eva Schumaker, and one sister in infancy. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)
Charles Chase
Charles W. Chase, 74, 1728 N. 5th St., Bismarck, died April 13, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating.
Charles was born on Nov. 8, 1923, in Hazelton to George A. and Anna C. (Williams) Chase. He grew up and attended schools at Hazelton, graduating from high school in 1943. He married Audry I. McCann on May 4, 1946, in Bismarck.
Charles worked as a salesman for McCarny Ford for 25 years. He also worked for Rydel Motors in Grand Forks and Century Motors. His most recent employment was as treasurer for the Bismarck Eagles Lodge, retiring in 1997.
Charles is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas W. and Peg, Round Rock, Texas; two grandchildren, Jessica and Thomas Jr.; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Cowan, Bismarck, and Margaurite McCann, Minneapolis; two brothers-in-law, George and Ruby McCann, Casselton, and Clem Stumpt, Glenwood, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Audry, who died on Jan. 4, 1992. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)
Rozella Hermes
GLEN ULLIN -- Rozella M. Hermes, 80, Glen Ullin, died April 14, 1998, in Glen Ullin. Services will be 10 a.m. MDT Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with the Rev. Claude Seeberger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. MDT Thursday at the church, where a wake service and rosary will be said at 7 p.m.
Rozella was born on April 10, 1918, to Fred and Tecla Tooz in rural Killdeer. Rozella was raised and educated at Killdeer. She started her college education at Dickinson and transferred to Capital Commercial College in Bismarck to get her accounting degree.
She worked in Governor Langer's office for a short time and was transferred to the State Laboratory, where she was a bookkeeper. She resigned in 1946 and moved to Oregon, where she worked for People's Finance Co.
She married William F. Hermes in 1946 at Portland, Ore. They returned to Glen Ullin in 1947 and worked for the Curlew Elevator. William died in 1952. Rozella married Tom Hermes in 1956.
She continued at the elevator until 1969, when she started work for Walter Fitterer. She retired in 1980. After the death of Tom in 1980, she continued to make her Glen Ullin her home.
In her spare time, she loved to play cards and belonged to two bridge clubs, whist club and a pinochle club. She also bowled for 25 years. Following retirement, they wintered in southern climates.
She was a charter member of Glen Ullin Lioness Club and Christian Mothers.

Lavern Grewe
WASHBURN -- Lavern L. Grewe, 71, rural Washburn, died April 14, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Washburn, with the Rev. Todd Hylden officiating. Burial will be in Birka Lutheran Cemetery, rural Washburn.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
Lavern Leslie Grewe was born Nov. 9, 1926, in rural Washburn to Walter and Hattie (Holznagel) Grewe. He grew up on his parents farm east of Washburn and then later 15 miles west of Washburn, where he attended rural school.
As a young man, he began farming and ranching with his father and then later with his brother, Leo. He also ran a haystack moving business. He retired from farming and ranching in the mid-1980s.
He then worked as a carpenter for a number of years in the Washburn area. He had been in ill health for the past two years.
Lavern enjoyed traveling and visiting with his family and friends.
He is survived by two sisters and one brother-in-law, Elsie Clark, and Amanda and Virgil Clark, all of Underwood; and four nieces and two nephews.

VALLEY CITY -- Dr. Paul V. Reslock, 72, Valley City, died April 13, 1998, in a Valley City hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Valley City. Burial will be in North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, rural Mandan.
He is survived by his wife, Caryl; three sons, Chris, Atlantic City, N.J., David, Haslett, Mich., and William, Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Jane Feist, Mandan; four brothers, Roy, Myrtle Point, Ore., Harold, Seattle, Wash., Phil, Devils Lake, and Don, Rapid City, S.D.; and one sister, Dorothy Leet, Starkweather.
