Robert Schonert
Robert F. Schonert, 80, Bismarck, died Sept. 19, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10-30 a.m. Tuesday at Corpus Christ Catholic Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Steve Zastoupil and Al Leary officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A rosary and vigil services will be held at 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Robert F. Schonert was born June 2, 1918, at Bismarck, the son of Paul and Agnes (Murray) Schonert. He was raised on the family farm north of Bismarck. On Feb. 3, 1943, he was married to Lucille Morris in Bismarck. He purchased the farm in 1947 and became the third generation to operate the family farm where he raised cattle and grain for many years.

He was one of the leaders in the rebuilding of the Sather Stone Telephone Line in rural areas north of Bismarck. Bob had a special talent for designing, building and repairing equipment. He loved working out of his machine shop and enjoyed helping friends and neighbors with their machinery problems.

He built some of the first stack movers in the area. He built and owned the first truck mounted stack mover in North Dakota, operating a custom hay moving business for over 20 years. Bob held patents on two of his inventions. The first, a portable stack frame and the second, a tree row weeder for cleaning and weeding new plantings of trees. Bob spent two years working for the Gold Seal Company building corrals and fences for a buffalo and elk ranch in the area.

He had a special interest in photography and carried his camera with him everywhere. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, playing cards and telling stories. Bob was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Elks, Eagles, Moose and the Farm Bureau. He had been a 4-H leader, a member of the Burnt Creek School Board, served on the board of directors for FHA and was past president of the Burleigh County Pioneers.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lucille; four sons and four daughters-in-law, Douglas and Pat, Baldwin, Donald and Peggy, Bismarck, Mervin and Jan, Beulah, and Marvin and Pam, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Al Kuntz, Bismarck; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Roy and Beverly, Baldwin, and Leona Schonert, Baldwin; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Grace Andahl, Bismarck, and Rosemary and Roy Andahl, Bismarck; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Joe; and one brother-in-law, Helmer Andahl.

Gordon and Barbara Erickstad
Services for Gordon Erickstad, 53, and Barbara Erickstad, 49, Bismarck, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lutheran Church of the Cross, Bismarck, with the Rev. Keith Odney officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Memory Gardens, Valley City, with the Rev. Paul Brown officiating. Military rites will be provided by North Dakota Army National Guard, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Barbara Marie Heckman was born Jan. 19, 1949, in Valley City, the daughter of Lawrence R. and Ethel B. (Spoerl) Heckman. She attended school in Valley City, graduating from Valley City High School in 1967. She attended Dakota Business College, Fargo, graduating in 1969.

Gordon Kent Erickstad was born June 1, 1945, in Devils Lake, the son of Arthur and Esther (Dahlstrom) Erickstad. He attended school in Starkweather, graduating in 1963. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served a tour in Korea. He was discharged in 1967 and attended and graduated from Dakota AeroTech in Fargo.

Barb and Gordy met in Fargo in 1969, and were married Jan. 10, 1970, in Valley City. They made their home briefly in Nebraska, Alaska and Fargo, before moving to Bismarck in 1973. They had three children, Michelle Lynn, Stacey Marie and Brian John.

Barb worked for the Bismarck Tribune, United Accounts and most recently, Dan's Supermarket.

Gordy served for 31 years in the North Dakota Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. He was an aircraft mechanic supervisor for the Guard.

Barbara and Gordon are survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Michelle and Jay Hansen, West Fargo, and Stacey Erickstad, Phoenix; one son, Brian, Bismarck; and four grandchildren, Brandon, Samantha, Kimberly and Matthew Hansen, all of West Fargo.

Barbara is survived by her mother, Ethel Heckman, Valley City; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Kathleen and Tom Langemo, Fingal, and Jan Heckman, Fargo; and one brother-in-law, Rydell Becker, Valley City.

She was preceded in death by her father; and one sister, Pamela Becker.

Gordy is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Clayton and Mavis, and Bob and Maxine, all of Starkweather; and four sisters, Edith Wass, Starkweather, Gloria and Bud Unger, Denver, Phyllis and Arvey Arnold, Denver, and Sylvia and Dean Moorehouse, Spokane, Wash.

Ray Brost
DICKINSON -- Ray Brost, 77, Dickinson, died Sept. 19, 1998, in his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, with the Rev. Jerry Kautzman officiating. Music will be provided by Gerald Brost, song leader, and Joan Pribyl, organist. Burial will be in Dickinson Mausoleum.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. today at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, and after 6 tonight at the church. A rosary and prayer service will begin at 7 tonight at the church. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ray Brost was born June 4, 1921, on the family farm north of Gladstone, to Joe and Rose (Schuch) Brost. He was the third of four children. Ray was raised in the Gladstone and Taylor communities and was baptized and confirmed at Hirschville. On Jan. 27, 1942, Ray married Elizabeth Sickler in Gladstone. They farmed north of Taylor until 1945, when they moved north of Gladstone for two years. Ray and Elizabeth then moved to Gladstone where he worked as a mechanic for International Harvester. He owned the bar in Gladstone from 1948-1949. Ray then went into partnership with Gladstone Lumber and Implement where he worked for the next 11 years. From 1960-1974, Ray was the manager of the Farmers Union Oil of Gladstone. In 1981, Ray and Elizabeth moved into their present residence in Dickinson to operate R&E Health Food Store, which they started in 1974. Ray and Elizabeth operated R&E Health Food Store until retirement in 1991. Over the years, he was involved in Knights of Columbus, Gladstone City Council, St. Thomas Catholic Church Council and choir, and Gladstone Fire Department. Ray's greatest pleasure was playing his accordion, which he began playing at age three. He enjoyed fishing, camping, sharing music with those around him and having all his family together and we will miss his presence among us.

Ray is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Marie, Gladstone, Gerald and Jerilyn, Chippewa Falls, Wis., and Allen and Diane, Williston; one daughter and son-in-law, LaVerne and Rick Kaufman, Bismarck; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Chet Willer, Dickinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Rose; one brother, Frank; and one sister, Elizabeth.

James Schneider
KINTYRE -- James J. "Jim" Schneider, 58, Kintyre, died Sept. 20, 1998, in the Wishek hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. James Lauerman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon, where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7:30 Tuesday, followed by a rosary at 8. Visitation will continue after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jim was born June 16, 1940, in rural Logan County, near Kintyre, the son of Mathias J. and Agatha (Hilzendeger) Schneider. He grew up on the family farm northwest of Napoleon and received his elementary education in rural Logan County Schools. He attended Napoleon High School, graduating in 1958. Jim went on to attend Jamestown College where he received his bachelors degree in math and physical education in 1963. He then taught and coached at Harvey, Dickinson and Ashley. While at Ashley, Jim started the wrestling program and also served as football and track coach. Jim received his masters degree in math education from Southeastern State College at Durant, Okla., in 1969. Jim was married to Jane Baenen, Aug. 5, 1967, at Jamestown. In 1970, Jim and Jane returned to the Schneider family farm near Kintyre, where Jim has operated a grain and cattle farm since that time.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; three sons and two daughters, Jay, Lemmon, S.D., Jerry, Carrington, Jeff, Kintyre, Jackie Schneider and Jodi Schneider, both of Jamestown; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Thomas and Marlys, and Steve, both of Bismarck; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Lou and Tony Johs, Bismarck, Darlene and Bob Neugebauer, Menoken, Shirlene and Bob Jensen, Hazen, and LoAnn and Dan Getz, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Alvin.

Jacob Schweitzer
Jacob Schweitzer, 88, 3014 Withers Drive, Mandan, died Sept. 19, 1998, in a Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Worl Wise
Worl Wise, 96, 2036 N. Kavaney Drive, died Sept. 20, 1998, in his home. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Lavina Huseby
WILLISTON -- Lavina Huseby, 85, Williston, died Sept. 17, 1998, in the Williston nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Lutheran Home, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

She is survived by her sister, Norine Rull, Orange, Calif. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Viola Stein
MINOT -- Viola Stein, 61, Minot, died Sept. 19, 1998, in the Parshall nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; two sons, Bryan and Bruce, both of Minot; two daughters, Diane Brittian, Wichita, Kan., and Patricia Graves, Minot; three brothers, William Geiger, Mandan, Daniel Geiger, Minot, and Melvin Geiger, Minot; and one sister, Lorraine Landeis, Mandan. Lillie Walch
JAMESTOWN -- Lillie Walch, 92, Jamestown, died Sept. 20, 1998, in Jamestown. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Jamestown, with burial in Goodrich Cemetery.

She is survived by one son, Johnnie, Jamestown; and one daughter, Linda Tausend, Bismarck. (Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown)

Elmore Edmunds
Elmore V. Edmunds, 86, Olivia, Minn., died Sept. 18, 1998, in his home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bird Island, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Marie; three daughters, Maureen Beck, Bismarck, Patricia Dingels, Plymouth, Minn., and Eileen Fider, New York City; two sons, Peter, Solon Springs, Wis., and John, Bloomington, Minn.; and one sister, Harriet Johnson, Litchfield. (Dirks-Blem Funeral Service, Bird Island)

Paul Isaak
CENTER -- Paul Isaak, 70, Center, died Sept. 20, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Emil Opp
GLEN ULLIN -- Emil Opp, 68, Glen Ullin, died Sept. 20, 1998, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at the church, where a vigil service will begin at 7 tonight.

Emil was born Jan. 15, 1930, at Glen Ullin, to John J. and Helen (Kitzan) Opp. He was raised and educated near Glen Ullin. He worked on the farm until his marriage to Ann Ferderer on Dec. 27, 1951, at St. Joseph Church, Mandan. They moved to Laurel, Mont., and worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1954 they returned to the area where he began working for the Morton County Shop in Glen Ullin. In 1970 he was elected to the city council and in 1979 was elected to the first of two terms as mayor.

Emil loved his family and grandchildren, and enjoyed making them things from his woodworking hobby. His garden and playing cards were also some of his favorite things to do. He also loved his motor grader and enjoyed the time spent in it. He retired in 1995 to enjoy his hobbies.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; one son and daughter-in-law, Melvin and Rita, Lakeville, Minn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Tom Egenes, Red Lodge, Mont., and Dorle and Steve Heid, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Adriane Opp, Aaron Opp, Rachel Egenes, Krista Egenes, Katie Heid and Jameson Heid; four brothers, Ray and Marvin, both of Glen Ullin, Adam, Beulah, and John, Bismarck; and five sisters, Florence Heinle and Alice Wetzel, both of Glen Ullin, Gladys Fischer, Mandan, and Hilda Gappert and Helen Bickel, both of Bismarck. Darrel Hinkelman
Darrel D. Hinkelman, 52, Cedarburg, Wis., died Sept. 17, 1998, at his home. Services were held at Faith Lutheran Church, Cedarburg, on Sept. 21, 1998. Entombment was the next day.

He is survived by his wife, Marian; his children, Scott and Heather, all of Cedarburg; his parents, Edward and Marvel Hinkelman, Waubay, S.D.; and his brothers, Armin, Bismarck, and Curtis, Lakeville, Minn. (Schramka-Gunther Funeral Home, Cedarburg)

Bernhardt Mittleider
STEELE -- Bernhardt Mittleider, 74, Steele, died Sept. 22, 1998, at his home. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, Steele, with the Rev. Marvin Winstryg officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and for one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Bernhardt was born on Jan. 15, 1924, south of Tappen to John Sr. and Fredricka (Martin) Mittleider. He was raised and educated south of Tappen.

He married Anne Gunsch at Napoleon on May 27, 1945. They lived in Steele for most of their married life.

Bernhardt worked for Northern Improvement for 12 years and for Kidder County for 16 years. He also farmed south of Dawson and was currently working for Jerry at Garske Produce in Bismarck.

Bernhardt's life was devoted to his wife, Anne, their children and grandchildren. He was like a father to his grandson, Jayson, and always made himself available to help out his whole family. He enjoyed playing cards and "winning," dancing and old time music; fixing things to perfection; and going out to eat. He also was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Anne; one daughter, Sharon and fiancee, Fred, Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Lorri, Mandan, and Ken and Karen, Beulah; one sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Ray Boschee, Walla Walla, Wash.; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Gideon, Colo., John Jr. and Delores, Bismarck, Harold and Dorothy, Jamestown, and Benjamin and Grace, Tappen; six grandchildren, Misty, Jayson, Roxana, Randy, Steven, Mickael; two great-grandchildren, Devon and Blake; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Lenhardt; and one sister-in-law, LaVern Mittleider. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Ruby Tipton
Ruby M. Tipton, 66, Bismarck, died Sept. 22, 1998, in a Bismarck nursing facility. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Rick Fossum officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Ruby M. Woodward was born on June 13, 1932, the daughter of George and Minnie (Lyman) Woodward in Lincoln, Neb., where she was raised and educated. Ruby married Adelbert F. "Tip" Tipton on June 14, 1950. After their marriage, they lived in Superior, Nebraska, Kansas and Montana, before settling in North Dakota.

Ruby enjoyed playing pinochle and bingo and bowling and camping. She was a member and past president of The Eagle's Auxiliary.

Ruby is survived by her husband, Adelbert; four sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Sherry Tipton, and David and Angel Tipton, all of Bismarck, Gary and Betsy Tipton, Belgrade, Mont., and Roger and Liz Tipton, Burley, Idaho; two daughters and one son-in-law, Cindy Tidball, Bismarck, and Rhonda and Richard Rapp, Dickinson; one adopted son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Janine Chesko, Great Falls, Mont.; one adopted daughter, Heather Schraeder, Bismarck; 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Don Woodward, Lincoln, Albert Woodward, Channelview, Texas, and Robert Woodward, Oroville, Calif.; and one sister, Ethel Sovereign, Hallam, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Leatha Hacke; and two brothers, Howard Woodward and George Woodward. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Mamie Miner
Mamie Miner, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, 531 W. Bowen Ave., Bismarck, went to be with Jesus on Sept. 22, 1998. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Victory Family Baptist Church, 703 N. Fifth St., Bismarck, with the Rev. Dom Vetter officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Mamie was born in Brainerd, Minn., on Sept. 11, 1913. She was raised and educated in Bismarck. She married Emmet Miner on Dec. 14, 1933, in Dickinson. After their marriage, they moved to Bismarck.

She was the sweetest, kindest person you would ever want to know. She will be missed by all who loved her.

Mamie is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dean (Lorraine) Shultz and Mrs. Tom (Mary Kay) Feist, both of Bismarck; one son, Gene, Allenton, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and her special cat, Pude.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmet on Sept. 4, 1986; and her parents, George and Georgianna Smith. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Johanna Dietz
ELGIN -- Johanna Dietz, 90, Elgin, died Sept. 20, 1998, in the Glen Ullin nursing home. Services will be 11 a.m. MDT Friday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elgin, with the Rev. Nancy Jaster officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Elgin.

Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. MDT today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Serving as casketbearers will be Jeff, Tom, Vernon and Bernhard Dietz, Steve Loegering and Elmer Rauscher.

Johanna Kolodjeski was born on Aug. 20, 1908, the daughter of Frank and Pauline (Paliga) kolodjeski, on her parents' farm near St. Anna, Minn. She grew up and attended school there. In 1924, at the age of 15 years, Johanna and her brother, John, came to North Dakota on the train. She worked as a housekeeper for her two uncles, who were blacksmiths in New Leipzig.

On Aug. 7, 1928, she married Henry Dietz in Elgin. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to New Leipzig. Johanna was a mother and homemaker all of her life.

In 1954, she and Henry moved back to Elgin. Henry Dietz passed from this life on Nov. 18, 1990. Johanna continued to live in Elgin and became a resident of Dakota Hills in Elgin in April of 1997. She moved into the Marian Manor Nursing Home in Glen Ullin on Oct. 6, 1997, where she has resided since that time.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sons and daughters-in-law, Lester and Leola, Linton, Duane and Bernice, San Clemente, Calif., and Marvin and Donness, Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, Roman and Christine Kolodjeski, Avon, Minn.; her sisters and brother-in-law, Martha Brown, Isle, Minn., and Helen and Oliver Johnson, Minneapolis; her special friends, Alvin and Leona Hehn, Emil and Pauline Heim, and Alvin and Adeline Dietz; her grandchildren, Donnette and George Joyal, Paulette and Steve Krenz, Ronda and Steve Loegering, Scot and Denise Dietz, Grant Dietz, David and Nelda Dietz, Jeff and Joan Dietz, Sue Dietz, Tom and Michele Dietz, and Sandy and Scott Kostelecky; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Johanna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one infant son, Ernest; three brothers and one brother-in-law. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin)
