Elizabeth Vogel
Elizabeth Vogel, 79, Mandan, died June 13, 1997, in her home after a valiant battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. CDT Monday at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, Crown Butte, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Elizabeth was born June 10, 1918, at Blue Grass, to Jacob and Elizabeth (Beck) Skalsky. She was raised and educated in the Solen and Mandan area. On Nov. 17, 1937, she married Simon Vogel at St. Vincent Catholic Church in Crown Butte. After her marriage, she and her husband farmed at the Vogel family farm until 1995. Simon died in February of 1995 and Elizabeth continued to live on the farm until the present time.
She was a former member of Mandan Moose and Eagles, and was an active member of her church, giving countless hours of her time for the various activities.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Mary, Mandan; one daughter, Clara Isaak, Mandan; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Florence and Ray Muse, Stockton, Calif.; five half-sisters and three half-brothers-in-law, Bernita Karch, New Salem, Arlene and Emil Schatz, Glen Ullin, Shirley and Bill Gross, Bismarck, Virginia and Fred Muller, Arvada, Colo., and Loraine Shepherd, Billings, Mont.; four half-brothers and one half-sister-in-law, Leonard Skalsky, Swanville, Minn., Ernest Skalsky, Billings, Mont., Ervin and Loretta Skalsky, Longmont, Colo., and Clifford Skalsky, Mandan; and former stepsister-in-law, Elsie Kelly, Colorado.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Mary; her husband, Simon; one grandson, James Isaak; two stepbrothers, James and Clarence; and a stepsister-in-law, Vickie Skalsky.
Edward Bernhardt
Edward A. Bernhardt, 45, died June 13, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Church of St. Joseph, Mandan, with the Rev. Robert E. Feeney officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue until 12:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Edward was born April 24, 1952 in Bismarck, the son of Joseph and Barbara (Storick) Bernhardt. He was raised and educated in Mandan, graduating from high school in 1977. He was employed as a carpenter for the building trades.
He is survived by one daughter, Kayla Bernhardt, Mandan; his mother, Barbara Bernhardt-Senn, Mandan; one brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Barbara, Dickinson; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Kathleen and Richard Zimmerman, Bismarck, Pat and Kirby Oswald, Eureka, S.D., and Karen Bernhardt, Boston; and five nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph, who died in 1961; his stepfather, William Senn, who died in 1996; and his grandparents.
He was loved dearly by his family and will be greatly missed.
Lydia Ahl
GLEN ULLIN -- Lydia Ahl, 86, Glen Ullin, died June 14, 1997, in Glen Ullin. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. John United Church of Christ, Hebron, with the Rev. Thomas A. Zuhlke officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Hebron.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services, at the church.
Lydia Huber was born Jan. 9, 1909 in rural Mercer County, the daughter of Fredrick and Rosina (Retzer) Huber. She was raised and educated in rural Glen Ullin, and helped on the family farm until her marriage to Christ Ahl Feb. 19, 1929. Following marriage they farmed south of Golden Valley and later west of Hebron. They moved to Lodi, Calif., where Lydia worked in a winery.
They moved to Garrison, then to Hebron, and later to Dickinson where she was a janitor at the Elks. They belonged to several bowling leagues in Dickinson. They remained in Dickinson following retirement in the early 1960s. Lydia entered Marian Manor Nursing Home in Glen Ullin in November of 1996, where she had resided since.
She was a member of St. John Church and Dickinson Senior Citizens.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Bernice and Arvin Auch, Dickinson; four grandchildren, Patty Staiger and Donna Schneider, both of Hebron, Sandi Kitzan, Richardton, and Karen Fehr, Dickinson; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Dave Huber, Bismarck, Walter Huber, Hebron, and Gus Huber, Denver; and two sisters, Hilda Siewert and Anna Aipperspach, both of Lodi, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Wilbur; one granddaughter, Gloria; one brother; and one sister.
Mary Ehrmantraut
Mary Ehrmantraut, 91, widow of John Ehrmantraut, Bismarck, died June 13, 1997. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Peary Wilson and James Moos officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Mary Oleta Bowen was born April 20, 1906, at Douglas, N.D., the daughter of Milton and Laca (McLain) Bowen. She was one of 16 children. She attended schools in Douglas and Ryder, and entered nursing school at the Bismarck Hospital in 1923. She graduated in 1926, and worked as a private duty nurse and staff nurse in the Bismarck Hospital. In 1957 she became director of nursing service from which she retired on May 1, 1971.
Mary continued to serve people throughout her retirement as an ombudsman for Human Services, was an active member of the Senior Community, Silver Haired Legislature, Burleigh County Commission in Aging, was a charter member of Lewis and Clark District Nursing Association, and a lifetime member of the Eagles. She was also a charter member of McCabe United Methodist Church in Bismarck, and was listed in the fourth edition of "Who's Who in American Women in 1966-1967." She was the 1997 "Ma Werner" award winner at the Burleigh County Senior Center, and a 1997 runner-up for the Volunteer of the Year J C Penney Award.
Mary always had definite ideas about what she wanted to do with her life. She wanted to take care of people, which she continued throughout her life. Her theory was that a nurse must have a sense of humor, tolerance and broad shoulders.
Mary married John Ehrmantraut, May 21, 1927. They were blessed to have shared their 58th wedding anniversary prior to John's death in 1986. Besides her husband, John, Mary was preceded in death by her parents; 14 brothers and sisters; and one son, Richard.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Deryl and Ramona, and Jay and Alfhild, all of Bismarck, and Curtis and Janet, Lexington, Ky.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Thelma and Elmer Wilson, Ryder; and two sisters-in-law, Hazel Bowen, Portland, Ore., and Roberta Bowen, Hawkins, Texas.
Marvin Klein
GLEN ULLIN -- Marvin G. Klein, 65, Glen Ullin, died June 13, 1997, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at Evangelical Congregational Church, Glen Ullin, with the Rev. Bill Bradley officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery, rural Glen Ullin.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin, where a prayer service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services, at the church.
Marvin was born March 31, 1932, in Hettinger County, the son of Edward Sr. and Louisa (Luithle) Klein. He was raised and educated in rural Hettinger County, and worked as a mechanic until entering the United States Army on Nov. 1, 1949. Following his discharge on Nov. 6, 1952, he returned and farmed in the Mott area. Marvin moved to Bismarck in 1960 where he worked in construction. He married Bertha Wetzel Nov. 12, 1977, in Glen Ullin. Following marriage they resided in Glen Ullin but continued to be involved in construction.
He was a member of the American Legion, trustee of Evangelical Congregational Church and a member of Operating Engineers Local 49.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters and sons-in-law, Audrey and Greg Brick, Coon Rapids, Minn., and Cindy and Todd Gallagher, Bismarck; stepchildren, Glen, Jim and Jerry Beierlein, Betty Sanden, Debra Fitterer and Dianne Kroh, all of Glen Ullin; three grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; four brothers, Ervin, Bowman, Edmund, Elgin, Bennie, Lemmon, S.D., and Richard, Billings, Mont.; and one sister, Edna Guenther, Dickinson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and three sisters.
Aneita Speaks
WAHPETON -- Aneita Speaks, 95, Wahpeton, died June 11, 1997, at Wahpeton. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Erik Saxvik and Robert D. Lynne officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
Aneita was born March 2, 1902, in Hampton, Ill., to Oscar and Clara (Bugby) Stephens. She moved to Garrison, N.D., in her youth and attended nurse's training at Bismarck Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1924. She married Harold Speaks May 18, 1925, and they lived in the Bismarck-Mandan area. Harold died in 1969. Aneita later retired and continued living in Bismarck until 1989 when she moved to Wahpeton to be near her granddaughter, Pamela Mayo. She resided at the Leach Home and the past year at the Wahpeton Health Care Center.
Aneita enjoyed traveling in her retirement, spending winters in Florida with her sisters. She also enjoyed square dancing and cards at the senior citizen center and many social activities with her good friend Archie Brunelle of Mandan. She was actively involved in quilting at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, and a member of Martha Circle. Aneita was busy with taking meals on wheels to the senior citizens until she was 80. In Wahpeton she was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and enjoyed lifelong hobbies of knitting, crocheting, tatting and beadwork. She also greatly enjoyed watching pool (a former player herself) and was a Minnesota Twins baseball fan.
She is survived by one sister, Pearl Allen, Coleharbor; one daughter, June (Vernon) Allen, Eugene, Ore.; one son, Glenn, Bismarck; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; four brothers; three sisters; and two sons, James and Hershel.

Florence Scott
UNDERWOOD -- Florence "Flossie" Scott, 72, Underwood, died June 13, 1997, in the Underwood nursing home after a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church, Underwood, with the Rev. James Ryan officiating.
Visitation will be from 1:30 to 6 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood, and will continue after 7 p.m. at the church, where a rosary service will be held at 7:30.
Florence S. Eisenmann was born Feb. 25, 1925, at Underwood to Frank J. and Elizabeth M. (Stadick) Eisenmann. She grew up in Underwood where she graduated from Underwood High School in 1943. She was employed at the Outlaw Trading Store and Von's Clothing Store as a clerk. She married Donald L. Scott on Aug. 6, 1946, in Underwood, where they made their home. She continued to work at Von's Clothing and also worked as a postal clerk at the Underwood Post Office for 20 years. They began spending their winter months in Mesa, Ariz., in 1977.
Flossie had been in ill health since 1988 and suffered a stroke in 1995. She became a resident of the Prairieview Nursing Home in Underwood in January of 1996.
She was a member of the Underwood V.F.W. Auxiliary and a life member of St. Bonaventure's Altar Society. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting and playing bridge. She enjoyed watching sporting events and her favorite teams were the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves. Her grandchildren were very special to her.
She is survived by her husband, Don, Underwood; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie and Jay Snyder, Underwood, and Phyllis and Gary Torske, Tioga; two sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck and Claudette, Underwood, and Tracy and Myrt, Bismarck; 12 grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Marvin Schuh, Underwood; and one brother and sister-in-law, Layton and Donna Eisenmann, Underwood.
Emma Mautz
GARRISON -- Emma Mautz, 93, Garrison, died June 13, 1997, in the Garrison nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison. Burial will be in Garrison Cemetery.

Pauline Lithun
HARVEY -- Pauline Lithun, 75, Harvey, died June 13, 1997, at her daughter's home in Bismarck. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Bethany Lutheran Church, Harvey. Burial will be in Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, rural Harvey.

Dawn Erickson
DICKINSON -- Dawn C. Erickson, 36, Dickinson, died June 12, 1997, at her home. A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.
Dale Lapp
Dale E. Lapp, 51, 9401 Apple Creek Road, died June 13, 1997, at his home after a battle with cancer. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church, Lincoln, with the Rev. David Swonger officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Dale was born April 15, 1946, in Bismarck, the son of Emil Sr. and Elma (Pfenning) Lapp. He grew up and attended schools in rural Zap. Dale married Diane Patterson in 1983. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Dale worked as a carpenter and farmed for several years.
Dale enjoyed hunting, animals and working with wood.
He is survived by his wife, Diane; one daughter and son-in-law, Trina and Pat Gilhooly, Bismarck; one son, Brandon, Bismarck; his mother, Elma, Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, Emil Jr. and Donna, Bismarck; numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law.
Kenneth Jacobson
ALMONT -- Kenneth "Kenny" Jacobson, 74, Almont, died June 16, 1997, in the Glen Ullin nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Wednesday at Sims Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Van Vechten Crane officiating. Burial will be in Sims Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem, and will continue one hour before services at the church.
Kenneth was born Sept. 24, 1922, at Almont, the son of Oscar and Anna (Stromberg) Jacobson. He received his education at Curlew School in Sims School District. As a young man, he worked on area farms. He was talented at playing the accordion and violin.
He is survived by one aunt, Delia Olin, New Salem; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Leslie.
Olga Mockel
WILLISTON -- Olga Mockel, 99, Williston, died June 16, 1997, in the Williston nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Everson Funeral Home, Williston.
Edward Kurle
Edward Kurle, 88, 1725 N. Fourth St., died June 16, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.
Herbert Rode
MONTPELIER -- Herbert R. Rode, 78, Montpelier, died June 14, 1997, in Jamestown. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, with burial in Adrian Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Eddy Funeral Home, where a prayer service will begin at 9 tonight.
Herbert was born Feb. 9, 1919, in Manns Township, near Adrian, the son of Arthur and Emma (Doeling) Rode. He received his education in Manns Township School, rural Adrian. He farmed and raised his family on the family farm near Adrian. He later moved to Montpelier and operated Rode's Grocery and Cafe for a few years before retiring.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Art Cofell, Jamestown, and Carol and Chuck Rodin, Marion; five sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Deb, Montpelier, Richard and Linda, Spring Valley, Calif., Arthur and LaDonna, Bismarck, Ronald and Gayle, Ypsilanti, and Gene and Sherry, Marion; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Schultz, Minot.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Myrtle Lundeen; and two brothers, Albert and Robert.
