John Prouty
UNDERWOOD -- John Leonard Prouty, 91, Underwood, died Feb. 13, 1998, in an Underwood nursing home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Augustana Lutheran Church, Underwood. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 tonight, at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood, and for one hour prior to services at the church Tuesday.
John Leonard Prouty was born on March 22, 1906, on his fathers homestead 12[1/2] miles northeast of Underwood, in Linder Township. His eighth-grade education was at the Reuter School. As an adult he served on the school board for eight years. On June 5, 1929, he married Lucille Engler at Wilton. They made their home on the family farm later purchasing it. They farmed and ranched until 1958, when they moved into Underwood.
He was a longtime member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Farmers Union, 24 year member of Underwood Senior Citizens Center, and he enjoyed song fests around the piano with his daughters, playing cards, and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille, Underwood; two daughters and one son-in-law, Georgia and Glenn Hoberg, River Falls, Wis., and Irene Kelly, Twin Falls, Idaho; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and eight great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; five sisters; one great-granddaughter, Brenda Allen; and one son-in-law, Keith Kelly.
John McLaughlin
FORT YATES -- John S. McLaughlin, 86, Fort Yates, died Feb. 12, 1998, in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church, Porcupine, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish rosary will be said at 7:30 tonight. Visitation will continue at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
John S. "Jack" McLaughlin, was born Aug. 4, 1911, along the Porcupine Creek, south of Chadwick, to Charles and Nellie (Lanigan) McLaughlin. He was one of six children. He was raised and lived in Porcupine almost all his life. He was a rancher and heavy equipment operator for many years. Jack was a drummer for the family band of "Merry Macs" that played for many dances in Sioux and Grant counties during the '40's and '50's.
He is survived by one son, Kenny, Fort Yates; one daughter, Sharon Two Bears, Cannon Ball; his grandchildren, Ken Jr., D.J. and Lisa McLaughlin, all of Fort Yates, Karol, Jaci and Allyson Two Bears, all of Cannon Ball; his great-grandchildren, Lindsey Two Bears, Zachary Hunter McLaughlin and Aspen Jade McLaughlin.
He was preceded in death by his parent; his brothers, Robert "Phat," Charles "Chip," and William "Bill;" his sisters, Leta McLaughlin, Helen McLaughlin and Melda "Googoo" Kirk; two sons, James "Buster," and Donald "Donnie;" and two grandchildren, Kendall "Scotty" McLaughlin, and Mona Joy Two Bears.
Charles Umpleby
Charles Umpleby, 65, 300 Sixth Ave. S.W., Mandan, died Feb. 16, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10-30 a.m. Thursday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Revs. Cyprian Meier and John Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites provided by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 707 and American Legion Post No. 40.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will be said at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Charles was born June 26, 1932, in Stanton. He was the son of the late Harry and Daisy Pearl (DeCamp) Umpleby. Charles was raised and educated at Fort Clark, and attended Stanton High School for one year. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954. Charles married Geneva Slinde on June 18, 1955, in Hazen.
Charles was a truck driver for Transport Inc. in Mandan for 30 years until his retirement in 1991. During the time he was a truck driver, he also owned and operated Umpleby's Lawn Service for 20 years.
Charles was a member of the VFW, American Legion and former member of the Knights of Columbus.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Geneva; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dale and Julie, Mebane, N.C., Layton and Annette, Burnsville, Minn., and Wesley, Maplewood, Minn.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Simon Zins, New Salem, Rebecca and Charles Willer, Bismarck, JoAnn and Paul Evans, Maplewood, Minn., and Susan and Tim Brady, Bismarck; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; one brother, James, New Town; and three sisters, Eleanor Roufley and Gertrude Martin, both of Bismarck, and Ardell Herr, Mandan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one infant sister, Eleanor. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)
Stanley Wald
LINTON -- Stanley M. Wald, 81, Linton, died Feb. 15, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton, with the Rev. Berchmans Konnully officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Stanley M. Wald was born Nov. 1, 1916, on a farm near Napoleon, the son of Markus and Mary (Bernhardt) Wald. He attended a rural school. On Oct. 16, 1940, he married Helena Bosch at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Linton. They made their home on a farm south of Napoleon. Stanley and Helena retired and moved into Linton in 1972.
He was a life member of Knights of Columbus, trustee for eight years at St. Anthony Catholic Church, south of Napoleon, and a member of the Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife, Helena; three sons and daughters-in-law, Harvey and LuElla, Bismarck, Isadore and Margaret, Kintyre, and Markus and Rebecca, Mandan; two daughters and one son-in-law, Sister Siena Wald, Los Angeles, and Luella and Jack Klein, Linton; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Markus and Pauline Wald, and Barbara Wald, all of Linton; eight sisters, Elizabeth Braun, Napoleon, Mary Wangler and Zita Kuss, both of Bismarck, Rose Weigel, Mandan, Franciscan Sisters Agatha Wald, Hankinson, Imedla Wald, Wahpeton, and Jovita Wald and Gerard Wald, both of Madison, Wis.; and one brother-in-law, Romaltus Wangler, Bismarck.

Margaret Du Bois
Margaret "Peggy" W. Du Bois, 73, Sioux City, Iowa, and formerly of Bismarck and Fargo, died Feb. 15, 1998. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Sioux City. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, Sioux City.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to services.
Margaret was an active community, church and Republican Party volunteer. She was especially proud of reaching her goal of Contract Bridge Life Master. She was a charter member of the Junior League of Fargo. Margaret was a talented seamstress and crafted beautiful needle work which she generously shared with family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew her.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Nancy Du Bois, Cleveland, Ohio; one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and John Cochran, Minneapolis; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Virginia W. Snowden, Nunnelly, Tenn., and Constance and Robert Temple, Sioux City; one brother, Charles Wood, Sun City, Ariz.; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hobart Wood and Abigail Kneedler Wood Hartwig; one daughter, Barbara Du Bois Callahan; and infant twins. (Larkin Funeral Home, Sioux City)
