Esther Rice
Esther Rice, 86, 1507 First Ave. N.W., Mandan, died Nov. 14, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Pettibone, with the Rev. Terry Martin officiating. Burial will be in Pettibone Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today, and 5-9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, all at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. A prayer service will be said at 7 tonight with the Rev. James A. Baneck officiating.

Esther was born Sept. 23, 1911, the daughter of Charles and Kathryn (Stahl) Goffe. She was raised in the Woodworth area, where she was educated. She married Dan Rice on Oct. 4, 1936, at Eldridge, where they farmed southeast of town. They retired in 1968 and they moved into Pettibone. Mr. Rice died in 1992. Following her husband's death, Esther moved to Mandan, where she has since resided.

She is survived by one daughter, Joan Kuhn, Chinook, Mont.; one son and daughter-in-law, Nick and Joanne Rice, Caledonia, Minn.; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Myrtle Stroh, Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Agnes Monson and Kathryn Maikle; two brothers, Merlin Goffe and Hiram Goffe; and her husband, Dan.

Margaret Schwartz
Margaret Esther DeGroot Schwartz, 82, Groton, Conn., and formerly of York, died Nov. 16, 1997, in a Stonington, Conn., nursing home. Services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, Groton. A private burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Leeds.

She is survived by three sons, Gary, Panama City, Panama, and Charles and Dean, both of Groton; five daughters, Carole Hell, Enid, Okla., Margo Bogdanowitz and Rhonda Schwartz, both of Acworth, Ga., Eileen Schwartz, Cheshire, Conn., and Mary Hopkins, Groton; and three brothers, George Christopher, Seattle, Wash., William DeGroot, Spokane, Wash., and Ernest DeGroot, Jamestown. Emma Walker
Emma A. Walker, 86, St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck, died Nov. 16, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at Calvary United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jim Cissell officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Ashley City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today, and noon-9 p.m. Wednesday, both at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church, Thursday. Further arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Rose Boynton
Rose Marie Boynton, 79, Lemmon, S.D., died Nov. 14, 1997, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Spencer Memorial Presbyterian Church, Lemmon. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Lemmon.

She is survived by husband, Van; one daughter, Donna Newman, Glenwood, Iowa; five sons, David, Dalles, Ore., Larry, Greybull, Wyo., Rick, Helena, Mont., Mark, Lemmon, and Lynn, Williston; two brothers, Joseph Hess, Gering, Neb., and Peter Hess, Belle Fourche, S.D., and one sister, Irene Scoular, Lemmon. Eva Dukart
DICKINSON -- Eva Mary Dukart, 89, Dickinson, died Nov. 15, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. MST today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Burial will follow in St. Pius Cemetery, Schefield.

She is survived by two sons, Clemens, Billings, Mont., and Thomas, Schefield; three daughters, Clementine Stroh, Leona Sand and Florence Herauf, all of Dickinson; and four sisters, Margaret Pehl, Missoula, Mont., Ida Messer, Richardton, Beatrice Heck, Dickinson, and Veronica Decker, Vancouver, Wash. Richard Kuhn
LEFOR -- Richard Kuhn, 68, Lefor, died Nov. 11, 1997, at his home of natural causes. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, Lefor. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites.

He is survived by two daughters, Janice Smith, Brunswick, Ohio, and Sheila Fischer, Pierron, Ill.; one sister, Vicki Demellow, Hercules, Calif.; and four brothers, Roland, Streamwood, Ill., John and Carl M., both of Lefor, and Marvin, Dickinson. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Jacob Jochim
Jacob Jochim, 91, Mobridge, S.D., died Nov. 14, 1997, in a Mobridge nursing home. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. MST Wednesday at St. Philomenia Catholic Church, Selfridge. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine, Mobridge; four sons, Jack, Richard and Leo, all of Ridgefield, Wash., and Art, Selfridge; two daughters, Dorothy Mosset, Mandan, and Alvina Dobler, Mobridge; one brother, Joe, Florida; and one sister, Katie Schwan, Bismarck. (Kesling Funeral Home, Mobridge)

Iris Traynor
PARSHALL -- Iris Kline Traynor, 98, Parshall, died Nov. 16, 1997, in a Parshall nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, Parshall. Burial will be in Parshall Cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Keogh, Boulder, Colo.; and three sons, James Kline, Fargo, Parry Kline, Myrtle Creek, Ore., and Hugh Kline, Shelton, Wash. (Johnson Funeral Home, Parshall)

Esther Greslivold
MINOT -- Esther Greslivold, 85, Minot, died Nov. 16, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. Further arrangements are pending with Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Ida Mummey
BEULAH -- Ida Mummey, 76, Beulah, died Nov. 16, 1997, in a Beulah nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah. Further arrangements are pending with Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Andrew Volk
Andrew Volk, 81, Bismarck, died Nov. 17, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck.

Walter Cottonwood
FORT YATES -- Walter Cottonwood, 65, Fort Yates, died Nov. 17, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Further arrangements are pending at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Clair Bartholomew
DICKINSON -- Clair Bartholomew, 68, Dickinson, died Nov. 18, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Further arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Walter Cottonwood
FORT YATES -- Walter V. Cottonwood, 65, Fort Yates, died Nov. 16, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Cannon Ball School Gym, with the Rev. John Floberg officiating. Burial will be in Old Scout Cemetery, Cannon Ball.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, at Cannon Ball School Gym, with a wake service to follow.

Walter was born Feb. 23, 1932, at Fort Yates to Sidney J. Cottonwood and Mildred (Comes Last) Uses Arrow. He graduated from Fort Yates High School. On Aug. 16, 1949, he joined the U.S. Army and served two years overseas during the Korean Conflict. He later worked for Solen-Cannon Ball School, Head Start, housing construction and many more places. Walter was a full gospel minister preaching the word of God.

He liked to play guitar and sing gospel songs. He was well known on the powwow trail and was a champion grass dancer. He also enjoyed playing bingo and visiting the casino. Walter loved his children and grandchildren very much.

He was a member of Matthew American Horse Legion Post No. 259, and very active in community events.

He married Myrtle Fool Bear and together they raised a large family. He later married Erma Crow Eagle and resided in Fort Yates.

He is survived by his wife, Erma; two daughters, Alva Gabe, Cannon Ball, and Danielle Plenty Chief, Fort Yates; two sons, Vincent Many Ribs, Seattle, and John Cottonwood, Westminster, Colo.; his mother, Mildred Uses Arrow, Fort Yates; adopted brother and sister, Saunders and Lyda Bearstail Sr., Mandaree; his stepchildren, George Fool Bear Sr., Ervin Plenty Chief Jr., Leora Wise Spirit and Emma Ginger, all of Cannon Ball, Genelli Pretty Standoff, Alberta, Canada, and Bob and Leon Crow Eagle, Brocket, Alberta; 37 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a special granddaughter, Rjae Cottonwood.

He was preceded in death by his father; and two sons, Alton and Allen Cottonwood. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Emma Bair
Emma Bair, 91, 904 3rd St. N.W., Mandan, died Nov. 18, 1997, in a Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at First Lutheran Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Steve Gratz
Steve Gratz, 84, 1000 3rd St. NE, Mandan, died Nov. 18, 1997, in Mandan. Services will be held at noon Friday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. Thursday by St. Vincent Verein, and another rosary will be said at 7 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus, and a parish vigil will follow at 7:30 p.m., all at Weigel Funeral Home on Thursday.

Steve Gratz was born Dec. 14, 1912, in Morton County in the Crown Butte area. He was the son of Joseph and Minnie (Boehm) Gratz. Steve was raised and educated in the Crown Butte area. He married Rose Kautzman on Nov. 7, 1932, in St. Vincent's Catholic Church, Crown Butte. They farmed in the Crown Butte area until 1950. From 1950 until 1956, he worked for the Mandan Beverage Company, and from 1956 until 1976, he worked for the Mandan school system.

He played the accordian in the Little Dutch German Band and the Adam Gratz orchestra.

He was currently a member of Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent Verein and has a lifelong membership in the musicians union.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David and Eileen, Mandan; four daughters and sons-in-law, Lillian and Frank Rennich, Mandan, Bernice and Emanuel Geiger, Mandan, Carol and Robert Radmer, Fargo, and Jeannie and Jim Fitterer, Beaverton, Ore.; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mathilda and Peter Kopp, Mandan, Katherine and Lloyd Butka, Sidney, Mont., Perpetua Kautzman, Bismarck, and Rosemary McDonald, Peoria, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rose, who died Oct. 23, 1987; three sisters, Magdalene Gratz, Ida Knoll and Alice Olheiser; and three brothers, Ralph, Adam and Tony.

Emma Walker
Emma A. Walker, 86, St. Vincents Care Center, Bismarck, died Nov. 16, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at Calvary United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jim Cissell officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the Ashley Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.

Emma Wolf was born on Aug. 9, 1911, in Danzig, the daughter of Henry and Pauline (Brandner) Wolf. She was raised and educated in Danzig. Emma married Adolph Walker on Oct. 1, 1933, at Eureka, S.D. Following their marriage, they farmed in the Danzig area, and in 1952, they moved to Eureka, where they purchased a farm. In 1965, they moved to Aberdeen, S.D., until 1991 when they moved to Bismarck. Emma moved to St. Vincents Care Center in 1993.

Emma was active in her church, and liked to quilt, but her greatest love was being around small children.

She is survived by her husband, Adolph; one son and daughter-in-law, Leroy and Sally Walker, Bismarck; three grandchildren, Gene and Nancy Walker, and Holly Walker and her fiance Jason Millner, all of Bismarck, and Michael Walker, West Wendover, Nev., and his friend, Mandy Schnell, Fargo; two great-grandchildren, Brock and Mason Walker, Bismarck; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Lottie and Kermit Karns, Kanses City, Mo., Millie and Leonard Schuchard, and Delores and Alvin Schuchard, all of Bismarck; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, August Wolf; four sisters, Edna Ritter, Adeline Dickhoff, Bertha Douthit and Shirley Schmidt; and one son, Eugene Walker.

Andrew Volk
Andrew B. Volk, 81, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, died Nov. 11, 1997, in a local hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck, with the Rev. Arnold Spain, officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. this evening. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

He was born Dec. 23, 1915, near Winona, west of Strasburg, the son of Anton and Eva (Faith) Volk. He married Rose Zerr in February of 1935. They had two children, Jolene and Betty Ann.

Andrew worked for Ludwig Peterson until 1947 when he started Volk Construction in the spring of 1947. In April, 1952, he went to work for Meisner and Anderson Construction and then Meisner Construction where he worked for about 25 years. He then went to work for Froeschle & Sons as a bidder for a short time. In 1977, he went to work for Harley Miller where he worked until his retirement in 1985.

He is survived by one daughter and two sons-in-law, Jolene Morgan-Nelson and Daryl Nelson, Driscoll, and Sammy Berg, Fargo; one sister and brother-in-law, Alberta and Bill Cates, Bremerton, Wash.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose; and one daughter, Betty Ann Berg.

Keith Lambott
Keith Willis Lambott, 67, 313 S. 11th St., Apt. B, died Nov. 18, 1997, in a local hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Boelter Funeral Home, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck.

He was born June 4, 1930, in Highmore, S.D., the son of Edmond and Agnes (Hanson) Lambott. He attended grade school in Highmore and graduated from Highmore High School. Keith served in the U.S. Army from November 1951 to October 1954. After basic training at Ft. Belvoir, Va., he spent the rest of his service time in England.

He married Iris Perrett in 1953, at Canterbury, England. In 1960, he attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., majoring in printing management. He received his vocational certificate from the North Dakota State School of Science in 1972. He worked in print shops in Beresford and Pierre, S.D., Jamestown and Bismarck and taught printing at United Tribes Technical College, retiring in 1983.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Iris; two daughters, Carol Lambott, Fargo, and Theresa Lambott, Bismarck; three sons, Larry, Everett, Wash., David, Fargo, and Steven, Bismarck; and two grandchildren, Heather Lambott and Chandra Schroeder.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Lyle and Leslie.
