Esther Victoria Larson was born April 6, 1904 in Mankota, Minn., the daughter of John Louis Larson and Bertha A. Schwartz Larson. John was of Swedish descent, having emigrated to the United States when he was a young a boy from Sweden. Bertha was born in the United States of German descent.
John L. was a stone and brick mason. He moved with his family to Bismarck when he was awarded the contract to build the Patterson Hotel, (then known as the McKensie Hotel) and started the John Larson Construction Co. Esther was about seven years old at that time -- the second oldest of five children. All have preceded her in death.
John built the family's home at 719 6th St., where he lived until his death. Many happy family gatherings were held there. Always an excellent student, Esther was the winner of the Winchester Prize for mathematics in grade school, as her brother, John W., had done. They attended the Wm Moore School, which is no longer there. When Esther was in the fourth grade, she was held back a year to care for her ill mother and her baby brother, Guy. When she attended high school, she loved girls' athletics, particularly basketball, which in her later years was her favorite spectator sport. She began driving a car when she was 11 years old. Hunting and fishing were favorite family sports which she enjoyed in her youth.
Piano was an important part of her life. She became an excellent pianist. In high school, she placed in the top three at the N.D. State Contest. She played for many functions and clubs in Bismarck. Her children were always so proud when they went to the movies (then silent films). When their mother walked down the aisle, everyone clapped, because when she entered the movie was about to start -- she played the piano for the picture.
Esther was married in May of 1924, to Carl Alexander Barneck, a handsome young sailor of the U.S. Navy from Bismarck. They lived in Bismarck and had two daughters, Beverly Jean Constans, Minnetonka, Minn., and Barbara Dale Clemens, Apache Junction, Ariz. Esther became a widow during the flu-pneumonia epidemic in December of 1932.
After the death of her husband, she attended business college and became a secretary. She worked for a number of years for the N.D. Employment Service, rising to a managerial position. In 1945, she went into partnership with her brother, John, in the John Larson Construction Co., where she worked as office manager until her retirement.
Esther had many friends and belonged to many clubs and associations. The Republican Party was high on her list, having served as Burleigh County chairwoman at one time. Other memberships included Zonta, B.P.W., Tuesday Study Club, Presbyterian Church and Circles United, Wednesday Birthday Club and several bridge clubs. She served on the Salvation Army Board as its secretary for many years.
One of her favorite hobbies, which she took up after retiring, was painting. She produced many lovely paintings, which she entered in art shows and also sold. Many of her friends and acquaintances own her paintings. She was a student of Rosemary Landsberger for a long time.
Bridge became her favorite hobby in her later years. She played in many groups and foursomes. She also enjoyed playing cribbage, which she taught to her daughters and grandchildren.
Esther became seriously ill in September of 1993. When she was stabilized in the hospital, she was moved to a nursing home and shortly became a resident at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, where she remained.
