Edward Houfek
Edward E. Houfek, 87, Bismarck, died Feb. 10, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 1-30 p.m. Friday at Bethel Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Juergensen officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Edward was born Jan. 30, 1911, in Weston, Neb., the son of Ernest and Anna (Novotny) Houfek. On Oct. 3, 1936, in Stirum, Edward was united in marriage to Gladys Meyer. Edward farmed in the Stirum area for 35 years.

Edward was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Stirum, for 57 years, and a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Bismarck, for four years.

He was a member of Wild Rice Soil Conservation in Forman, and a board member of Garrison Diversion.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Brian Larson, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Linda, Bismarck; two grandchildren, Chad and Brook; one great-grandson, Dakota Edward; one brother and sister-in-law, William and Adeline, California; and five nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother.

Arlys Keidel
DICKINSON -- Arlys E. Keidel, 69, Dickinson, died Feb. 11, 1998, in the Dickinson hospital. Private family services will be held Saturday at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending.

Anne Thompson
DUNN CENTER -- Anne L. Thompson, 90, Dunn Center, died Feb. 11, 1998, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be 1:30 p.m. MST Saturday at Normana Lutheran Church, Dunn Center. Further arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Selma Nutz
HARVEY -- Selma Nutz, 85, Harvey, died Feb. 10, 1998, in the Harvey nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church, Harvey, with burial in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey.

She is survived by her brother, Fred; one sister, Marie Schimke, Harvey. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Chris Silbernagel
HAGUE -- Chris Silbernagel, 88, Mount Vernon, Texas, died Feb. 8, 1998, in Mount Pleasant, Texas. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church, Sulpher Springs, Texas, with burial in Chapel Wood Memorial Gardens, Texarkana, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Anna; two sons, Matt, Grandview, Wash., and Chris, Kennewick, Wash.; and one daughter, Virginia Dillard, Mount Vernon. (Beaty Funeral Home, Winnsboro, Texas)

Margaret Herman
KULM -- Margaret V. Herman, 88, Kulm, died Feb. 9, 1998, in the Ashley nursing home. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Congregational Church, Kulm, with burial in New Beresina Cemetery, rural Kulm.

She is survived by four sons, Richard, Salt Lake City, James, Kulm, Thomas, Sacramento, Calif., and Michael, Aurora, Neb.; two daughters, Joan Souza, Lemon Grove, Calif., and Margaret Parrott, Glendale, Calif.; two brothers, Willis Muir, Green Valley, Ariz., and Wallace Muir, Seattle; and two sisters, Aileen Simpson, San Ramon, Calif., and Betty Mickelson, Kenosha, Wis. Gebhard Doebber
Gebhard Doebber, 88, Alexandria, Minn., formerly of Bismarck, died Feb. 11, 1998, in an Alexandria nursing home. Services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Alexandria. Further arrangements are pending at Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.

John Cain
WILDROSE -- John Cain, 86, Williston, died Feb. 10, 1998, in the Williston nursing home. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Bethel Lutheran Home, Williston, with burial in Wildrose Cemetery. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Jacob Rust
UNDERWOOD -- Jacob Rust, 93, Underwood, formerly of Mercer, died Feb. 11, 1998, in the Turtle Lake hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mercer Recreational Center, with burial in Mercer Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and will continue one hour before services at the community center.

Jacob was born Feb. 24, 1904, near Mercer, to Sam and Lena (Mehrer) Rust. He grew up on his parents' farm and attended rural school. As a young man he farmed near Mercer.

He married Rosina Strobel, July 25, 1933, at Washburn. They farmed in the Mercer area until moving into Mercer in 1951, where they owned Rust's Meat Market. Jacob also worked at Rust Manufacturing and Green Thumb in Mercer for many years.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Mercer, where he held many offices. He became a resident of Prairieview Nursing Home in Underwood on Nov. 10, 1991.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Vernia and Donald Hausauer, McClusky; one son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Lois, Turtle Lake; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Sam Jr., Mercer; and five sisters, Helen Russ, Lydia Bauer, Mary Fiedler and Elvina Fiedler, all of Mercer, and Erdina Fiedler, Sun City, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four brothers; and two sisters.

Angel Red Stone
Angel Rose Red Stone, 5 days, Cannon Ball, died Feb. 10, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial Building, Cannon Ball, with Danny Seaboy officiating. Burial will be in St. James Episcopal Cemetery, Cannon Ball.

A wake service will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at the Veterans Memorial Building.

Angel was born Feb. 6, 1998, in Bismarck, to Randi Dogskin and Darien Red Stone.

Angel Rose is survived by her parents, Randi Dogskin and Darien Red Stone; two sisters, Kendra Dog Skin and Shantle Red Stone, Cannon Ball; one brother, Dale Red Stone, Cannon Ball; her maternal grandparents, Rogene and Clayton Dogskin, Corstella Two Horses, all of Cannon Ball, and Delmer Ponga, Bismarck; and her great-grandparents, Rose Max, Florence Seaboy and David Seaboy, all of Sisseton, S.D. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Bertha Braunberger
MCCLUSKY -- Bertha Braunberger, 86, McClusky, died Feb. 9, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. today at United Methodist Church, McClusky. Burial will be in McClusky City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon today at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Bertha was born March 30, 1911, in Parshall to Ben and Minnie (Triebwasser) Reiswig. Her family then moved to a farm in the Lincoln Valley area north of Denhoff. Bertha grew up there and attended rural school.

She married Rudolph Braunberger on Jan. 15, 1930, in Lincoln Valley. They continued to farm and both drove school bus for many years. Bertha was also a cook in the McClusky Public School system.

Rudolph died on April 18, 1969. She continued to live in McClusky during her retirement.

Bertha is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Edith Baumann, Phoenix, Ariz., Delila and Ronald Reile, McClusky, and Judy Berg, Bismarck; four sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Rosemary, Mesa, Richard and Arlene, Goodrich, Roman and Sharon, Foley, Minn., and Ronald and Percilla, Richmond, Minn.; 23 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Deloris Garvey, Mesa, Ariz., and Aldtrude Hoffer, Bismarck; and four brothers, Sam Reiswig, McClusky, Lawrence and Norris Reiswig, both of Bismarck, and ElRoy, Minot.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Clarence and Melvin; and one sister, Esther Faul. (Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky)

Janet Loehner
Janet Ann (Feigel) Loehner, 71, Gresham, Ore., died Feb. 7, 1998. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. PST Friday at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Gresham, with inurnment in Douglas Cemetery, Troutdale, Ore.

Janet Ann was born April 27, 1926, on a farm near Halliday, the daughter of Nick and Olive (Tromsdale) Feigel. She was raised in a family that experienced the Great Depression. They were able to share love and fun amongst one another.

Janet graduated from Halliday High School in 1943. Janet was a popular member of a class of about 12 students, which had only one boy because of the demands of the U.S. military. Following high school, Janet taught in rural Halliday schools.

In 1946 she moved to Portland, Ore., where she worked first as a welder in the shipyards and later in the mail order department at Montgomery Wards. Her greatest pride and the job she loved most was that of being a homemaker and caring for her family in Gresham, where she has lived since 1959.

She married Wilbur Bud Loehner in 1948. Together they raised their two children and shared in the ownership of their company "Bud's Tire Company."

She was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church. We take comfort in knowing that she is at peace with our Lord.

She is survived by her husband, Bud; her daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Randy Laws, Gresham; two grandchildren, Justin and Nicole, Gresham; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Delores and George Ensz, Bismarck, JoAnne and Mike Wheeler, Bismarck, Sharron and Dennis Neuberger, Beulah, and Elaine Windle, Silverdale, Wash.; one brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Margret Feigel, Springfield, Va.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jon; her parents, Nick and Olive Feigel; and her brother, James. (Eastgate Funeral Service)

Robert Bercher Jr.
Robert J. Bercher Jr., 43, 930 E. Turnpike Ave., Bismarck, died Feb. 9, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital after a two-year battle with lung cancer. Services will be 11 a.m. today, at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Revs. Steve Zastoupil and William Fahnlander officiating.

Robert was born March 11, 1954, in Wisconsin, the son of Robert J. and Joan (Rueter) Bercher. Bob attended schools in Wisconsin and West Fargo, and graduated from high school from Home on the Range for Boys. He married Charlotte Boutilier on Dec. 3, 1976, in Bismarck. Bob worked as a crane operator for various construction companies and for B.N.I. for the last 17 years.

He had a passion for riding Harley Davidsons. Riding his Harley helped Bob through the last two years of his illness. He was active in the Harley Owners Group, and was a devoted husband and father.

Bob is survived by his wife, Charlotte; one son, Robert J. Bercher III, Bismarck; his father, Robert J. Bercher Sr., Orlando, Fla.; his mother, Joan Bercher, Grand Junction, Colo.; one sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Kevin Freed, Newcastle, Colo.; three brothers, Brian, Phoenix, Kevin, Bismarck, and Blair, Grand Junction; his grandmother, Margaret Rueter, Burlington, Wis.; his father and mother-in-law, Frank and Dolores Boutilier, Riverdale; one niece, Heather Bercher; and three nephews, Ryan and Kelly Freed and Andrew Bercher.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Home on the Range for Boys or the North Dakota Lung Association.

Eleanor Peterson
Eleanor Peterson, 67, Bismarck, died Feb. 10, 1998, in her home. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Bismarck Baptist Home, with the Rev. Richard Hagestuen officiating. Burial will be in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.

Visitation will begin at noon Friday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the nursing home one hour before services.

Eleanor was born Dec. 2, 1930, in Lehr, the daughter of John and Amelia (Schock) Weisser. She and her family moved to Verona in 1945. She worked for S&L in Jamestown for a number of years. She had been a resident of Bismarck for many years where she was employed at Bismarck Elks Club.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Robert Burchill, Valley City, and Judy and Duane Yetterbow, Jamestown; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Jean Anderson, Mandan; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Marvalene Haugen, LaMoure, and Lorraine Raines, Eureka, Calif.; and two brothers, Ted and Arlo Weisser, both of Jamestown.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Erna Christianson and Helma McFarland; and one brother, Leo.

Bernadine Burgad
Bernadine (Krumm) Burgad, 67, Mukwonago, Wis., died Feb. 10, 1998, at her niece's home in Mandan.

A prayer service and rosary will be led by Deacon Ray Grabar at 7 tonight at Bismarck Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place and burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, New Berlin, Wis., at a later date.

Bernadine Krumm was born Jan. 17, 1931, in Hague, the daughter of Joseph and Justine (Holzer) Krumm. She was married in 1949 to Victor Burgad in Strasburg. They lived in Strasburg for about a year, during which their son, Victor David, was born.

The family moved to Milwaukee, where Bernadine worked for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. She retired after 23 years of service.

Bernadine came to Bismarck four months ago to spend time with her sister, nieces and nephews. She passed away at her niece's home following a long battle with cancer.

She was well-cared for and loved by all of her family and friends. We were blessed to have the opportunity to spend her last days with her.

Bernadine loved children, enjoyed crocheting, playing cards and bingo.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Lois Burgad, New Berlin; three grandchildren, Brian Burgad and his wife, Brenda, New Berlin, Bridget Burgad and her fiance, Matthew Mars, Green Bay, Wis., and Bob Burgad, New Berlin; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gloria and Wally Keller, Brookfield, Wis.; her mother-in-law, Cecelia Burgad, Milwaukee; one sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Wendilin Braunagel, Bismarck; nieces and nephews, Perry and Jeri Braunagel and family, Dickinson, Timothy and Kathy Braunagel and family, Gillette, Wyo., and Sherry and Patrick Thill and family, Mandan; and many more relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her son.

Valdemar Lein
Valdemar A. Lein, 86, Driscoll, died Feb. 10, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, 11 miles north of Driscoll, with the Rev. Jo Olson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and at the church one hour before services.

Valdemar "V.A." was born April 23, 1911, on the family farm in Lein Township to Bertram and Mathilda (Lein) Lein. He grew up working on the family farm and was educated in rural schools in the Lein Township area.

He married Bertha Schneider in Driscoll in 1945. They operated the family farm and owned and operated Lein's Hardware in Driscoll.

He also worked several years at North Dakota Law Enforcement Center in Bismarck. He was active in the Driscoll community and enjoyed playing cards and visiting with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha; two daughters and sons-in-law, Thelma and Dennis Whitman, Driscoll, and Frances and Donny Hagel, Bowman; two sons, Clint, Everett, Wash., and Ralph, Bismarck; one sister, Catherine Vik, Bismarck; four grandsons; one granddaughter; and two great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; three sisters; and one son, Jerry.
