WILLISTON -- Willard Webster, 86, Williston, died March 24, 1998, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at First Union Church, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; and three daughters, Joan Sathe, Waynesboro, Va., Susan Rieke, Auburn, Ind., and Toni Wright, Brownwood, Texas. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Gloria Hoffman
Gloria Shea Hoffman, 63, Seattle, Wash., and formerly of Mandan, died March 18, 1998, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She is survived by her husband, Tom; her children, Carla Brockmiller, Karen Englehardt, Dan Hoffman, Sandy Phillips, Allen Hoffman and Ronita Smith; and her sisters, Georgia Collier, Imelda Paquette, Virginia Marback, and Eunice Wood.

Helen Schott
GARRISON -- Helen Schott, 88, Garrison, died March 24, 1998, in the Garrison hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, rural Garrison.

She is survived by one son, Donald Zook, Ridgefield, Wash. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Robert Williams
DICKINSON -- Rev. Robert A. Williams, 66, Dickinson, died March 26, 1998, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Monday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New England. Further arrangements are pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Magdalina Fleck
BEULAH -- Magdalina Fleck, 45, Beulah, died March 26, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Kathleen Tjaden
Kathleen M. Tjaden, 68, 1202 N. 4th St., Bismarck, died March 25, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Peary Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will begin at noon today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where an Eastern Star service and White Shrine Service will begin at 7 p.m. tonight.

Kathy was born on Oct. 6, 1929, in Flint, Mich., the daughter of Kobes and Verna (Hutchison) Tjaden. As a child the family moved to Dickinson, and then to Bismarck, where she graduated from Bismarck High School and then attended St. Alexius Nursing School. Kathy was employed with the State Highway Department until her marriage in 1977 to Jerry.

She was active in Eastern Star Bismarck Chapter No. 11, and was a life member of the Mizpah Shrine No. 1, Order of The White Shrine of Jerusaleum, and was a past worthy high priestess. She was also a co-president of Shrine Children's Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of McCabe United Methodist Chancel Choir.

Kathy was a loving, dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Her caring and giving ways touched all who knew her. Kathy loved reading, traveling, cross stitching, knitting, her church choir and enjoying nature.

Kathy will be greatly missed and loved.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry; three sons, and one daughter-in-law, Wayne Gluesing, Denver, Mark and Adrienne Gluesing, Boston, Mass., and David Gluesing, Sacramento, Calif.; five daughters and one son-in-law, Jennifer and Frank McDaniels, Jackie Gluesing, and Tonya Gluesing, all of Fargo, Jan Crosby, Bismarck, and Julie Tjaden, Springfield, Ore.; eight grandchildren, Andrew, Alexius, Michael, Jill, Davy, Chris, Bonnie, and Amber; one brother, Bill Tjaden, Bismarck; one sister-in-law, Sandy Tjaden, Bismarck; and two nieces, Kris Tjaden, Bismarck; and Kim Tjaden and her husband Joe Nguyen, Omaha, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Verna; her father, Kobes; and her brother, Rod.

Memorial preferences are to Shrine Childrens Hospital or McCabe Chancel Choir. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Sister Gemella Meier
Sister Gemella Meier, 82, a founding member of the Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery, Bismarck, died March 26, 1998, in a Bismarck nursing home, where she has lived since 1984. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Chapel of Annunciation Monastery.

Visitation begins at 4 p.m. today, at the monastery and continues until the funeral. A wake service will be said at 7 p.m. tonight at the monastery.

Barbara was born May 25, 1915, the 10th of 16 children of Julia and Joachim Meier. After spending her childhood in Zeeland, she entered St. Benedict's Convent, St. Joseph, Minn., and made her monastic profession on July 11, 1939. In 1944, she volunteered to help start the Bismarck Benedictine Community.

During her monastic life, Sister Gemella was a homemaker and cook for convents in Mandan, Dickinson and Bismarck. One of her longest stays was at St. Alexius Hospital from 1957-1966. There she served meals to expectant and new mothers, while offering hospitality to guests and hospital chaplain.

Sister Gemella was a loved resident at St. Vincent's Care Center for the past 14 years. She liked to befriend her roommates at the care center by alerting aides or nurses on behalf of those too weak to ask help. Later, when in a private room, she never tired of watching religious television shows, her favorite way of spending time with God. Her ready smile welcomed all visiting relatives with friends, with whom she liked to converse and pray.

In addition to her Benedictine sisters, Sister Gemella is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Nick Volk, Pierre, S.D.; one sister-in-law, Maggie, Zeeland; and five brothers and three sisters-in-law, Anton and Julia, Steele, Joachim, Oakes, Sebastian, Zeeland, Joseph and Anne, Monticello, Minn., and Peter and Regina, Grants Pass, Ore. Among her many nieces and nephews is the Rev. Cyprian Meier, pastor of Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, presider at her last rites.

Mabel Miller
Mabel P. Miller, 87, Bismarck, died peacefully on March 25, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Eastgate Funeral Service Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Kerry Stastney officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Mabel was born in Blackwater Township, on Oct. 23, 1910, the daughter of John A. and Emlie Jane (McIntyre) Erickson. She was the oldest of six children: Mabel, Grace, Earl, Estelle, Irene and Buddy. Mabel is survived by Grace, Earl and Estelle.

Mabel graduated from Minot State Normal School in 1930, receiving her standard teaching certificate in elementary education. She taught for 39 years with the majority being at Wachter Elementary School in the Bismarck School System. Mabel graduated with her B.S. degree in elementary education from Mary College, Bismarck, on May 23, 1966, receiving cum laude recognition. Mabel retired from teaching in May 1974.

Mabel served as deputy county superintendent of schools for McLean County from 1931-1934. Additionally, she had an active singing career in her early years, having the enjoyment of singing at many events in North Dakota.

Mabel married Leland on May 8, 1933, in Washburn. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.

She is survived by her husband, Leland; and four children, Deane and Arlene, Bismarck, Gary and Darla, Mandan, Gloria and Ralph Boehm, California, and Jim and Marvie, Arizona. Mabel and Leland have 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Leland, Deane, Gary, Gloria and Jim were at her bedside throughout her recent hospitalization at St. Alexius Medical Center.

Frank Haegele
Frank Haegele, 80, Bismarck, died March 26, 1998, at his niece's home in Bismarck. There will be a private family service.

Visitation will be held from noon to 5 p.m. today, at Bismarck Funeral Home.

Frank was born March 12, 1918, at Hague, the son of John and Barbara (Meier) Haegele. He was educated at Hague. Frank served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. He was an operating engineer from 1950 to 1981 with the Teamsters in Great Falls, Mont., building and repairing highways and roads in various states. In 1990, he moved to Bismarck.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Frank is survived by three sisters, Clare Keller and Lucarda Haegele, both of Hague, and Mary Volk, Minneapolis; and numerous nieces and nephews. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Arthur Brunelle
Arthur L. Brunelle, 82, Bozeman, Mont., formerly of Mandan, died March 21, 1998. Private graveside services will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place at Dahl Crematory, Bozeman.

Arthur was born in Gaylord, on April 8, 1915, one of 11 children of Majorique and Anna Marie (Sauvageau) Brunelle. Arthur graduated from Mandan High School in 1933. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, with the Rangers in the South Pacific. On July 28, 1947, he married Agnus Clara Fleck in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan. Two years later, the couple moved to Bozeman.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus and American Legion. He enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Agnus; one daughter, Joyce Brunelle, California; and one sister, Cecilia Ruddy, Glendive, Mont. (Dahl Funeral Chapel, Bozeman)

Edwin Giese
Edwin Giese, 88, McIntosh, S.D., died March 26, 1998, in a Mobridge, S.D. hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Monday, at First Baptist Church, McIntosh. Burial will be in McIntosh Cemetery.

He is survived by three daughters, Irma Hettich and Carolyn Martell, both of McLaughlin, S.D., and Deloria Huddleston, Martin, S.D.; one son, Thomas, McIntosh; three brothers, Richard, Palmdale, Calif., Harold, Fargo, and Clarence, Apache Junction, Ariz.; and two sisters, Esther Berg, Albuquerque, N.M., and Ida Shauer, Sterling. Frieda Schindler
Frieda Schindler, 84, Bismarck, and formerly of Lodi, Calif., died March 27, 1998, in the Turtle Lake hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. April 2, at Cherokee Memorial Park Cemetery, Lodi.

She is survived by two sisters, Elsie Bossert, Turtle Lake, and Hilda Bucholz, Bismarck; and one brother, Edwin Schell, Bismarck. (Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake)

Elmer Woodcox
Elmer R. "Bill" Woodcox, 81, 1521 Harmon Ave., Bismarck, died March 27, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at First Baptist Church, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. today, and 1-9 p.m. Sunday, both at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Further arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service.

Delano Lang
Delano Lang, 60, Mobridge, S.D., died March 23, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. MST Tuesday, at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herreid, S.D. Further arrangements are pending with Larson Funeral Home, Mobridge.

Lena Koenig
Lena Koenig, 90, Bismarck, died March 27, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.

Robert Hirsch
Robert W. Hirsch, 81, a chemical process engineer, Denver, Colo., and formerly of Bismarck, died March 25, 1998, in a Denver hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Monday, at The Church of the Risen Christ Catholic Church, Denver. Burial will be at a later date in Aberdeen, S.D.

Robert was born on Jan. 25, 1917, at Aberdeen, S.D., and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1934. He received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1940, and his master's Degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1941. He was a senior gas processing engineer with Shell Oil Co. and Stearns-Roger Inc. Among his many accomplishments, he invented and patented several processes and designed several international gas and chemical plants. He was also an accomplished investor and loved working with his son and grandson.

An avid musician, he played with the Lorne Towne Dance Band, which broadcast daily from Bismarck. He played and arranged music with the Lawrence Welk Band. He also played with the Teaneck Symphony in New Jersey, the Houston Community Orchestra, the Calgary Concert Band, The Gold Nugget Band, Golden Eagle Brass Band, Malley Swing Band and the Harland Miller Band. He sang in the Seraphic Chorale and in various church choirs.

He was a high school state tennis champion, and a college champion tennis player at the University of Michigan. Additionally, he loved golf and had a hole-in-one to his credit.

He is survived by wife, Doris V. Hirsch; one brother, Bernard B. Hirsch, Marion, N.C.; one sister, Gertrude H. Norris, Conway, Ark.; three sons, William H. and Bruce R. Hirsch, both of Sugarland, Texas, and Robert A. Hirsch, Katy, Texas; three daughters, Linda K. Schaff, Turlock, Calif., Kathleen D. Hall, Buffalo Grove, Ill., and Nancy Beaty, Mercer, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Magdalina Fleck
Magdalina Fleck, 45, 311 6th Ave. N.W., Beulah, died March 26, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday, at Weigel Funeral Home, where a parish vigil will be said at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, and a rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Maggie was born on April 23, 1952, in Bismarck, the daughter of Eugene and Edna (Smith) Vogel. Maggie was raised and educated in Mandan, graduating from Mandan High School in 1970. On May 26, 1972, she married Leonard Fleck, at Christ the King Church, Mandan. They lived in Mandan until 1983, and then moved to Beulah. Maggie worked at the Dakota Gasification Plant for six years.

She was a wonderful cook and loved to bake. No one ever left her house hungry. She was a fun loving person, who always had time for others. Maggie enjoyed crafts and craft fairs. She was a wonderful wife, mother and friend, and will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard; one son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Elizabeth, Mandan; one daughter, Christine Fleck, Mandan; her parents, Eugene and Edna Vogel, Mandan; one brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Noreen Vogel, Bismarck; and one sister, Diane Strom, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Arne Boyum
Arne S. Boyum of Bismarck died in March 23, 1998, in Mesa, Ariz. of natural causes. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with burial in Carrington Cemetery.

He was born at "old" Keene, in McKenzie County on Sept. 18, 1918, to Dr. Peter A. and Manda (Martinson) Boyum. He moved to Harvey at a young age. Arne attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Harvey High School in 1936, and the University of North Dakota in 1940. He was an active member of Phi Delta Theta social fraternity. He taught and coached in Devils Lake from 1940-1942, and in Harlem, Mont. from 1946-1947. Arne served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-1946. Arne married Cecilie Henry of Jamestown in 1942. While living in Carrington, he served on the school board, library board and the park board. He played a key role in upgrading the Carrington Golf Club from sand to grass greens. Hunting, fishing, tennis, swimming, church, woodworking, sketching and University of North Dakota athletics occupied his spare time.

As a lifelong Republican, he served three terms in the North Dakota House of Representatives. Arne was employed by Congress, Inc. for many years. He helped in establishing senior citizen clubs for North Dakota Lutheran Social Services. He served as executive director of the North Dakota League of Cities from 1972 until his retirement in 1986.

He is survived by his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Arne and Janie, Rolla, and Kelley and Pat, Fargo; one daughter and son-in-law, Katharine and Kurt Kuester, Jackson, Miss.; eight grandchildren, Rachel Boyum, Amanda and Tony Nelson, Brad and Jeff Boyum, Aaron, Jacob, Samuel and Benjamin Kuester; one great-grandchild, Taylor Nelson; and one brother, Lowell, Mandan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Tim.

The family prefers memorials to Bismarck YMCA, or the University of North Dakota Alumni Foundation. (Evans Funeral Home, Carrington)
