Brita Gardebring
Brita M. Gardebring, 79, Olympia, Wash., died Oct. 21, 1998 of natural causes at her home.
Brita was born on April 16, 1919, in Jonkoping, Sweden, to Einar and Valborg Johansson-Medin, and on Aug. 23, 1942, she married Olov G. Gardebring in Jonkoping. She was working on her doctorate in psychology at the University of Lund in 1948, when her husband, also a psychologist, had an opportunity to continue his research in the United States. They were both offered positions and immigrated to the United States in 1948, spending most of their time in North Dakota, primarily in Bismarck.
Brita was a school psychologist for the Bismarck public school system from 1957 until her retirement in November 1984. She co-authored a book in 1969, "Help for Children Who Have Difficulties to Learn," and received the North Dakota Council for Exceptional Children's Humanitarian Award in 1979.
Brita was a charter member of the Swedish Club Three Crowns in Bismarck and of the Bismarck-Mandan Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, and was active in the Mental Health Association. In Olympia, she was a cultural leader for the Swedish Vasa Lodge and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation.
For many years she taught the Swedish language and culture in Olympia, and was active in sharing Swedish traditions, such as Lucia at Christmas and Midsommar in June in Olympia and Rochester. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, weaving, embroidery, gardening, reading and listening to music.
She is survived by her husband, Olov G. Gardebring, Olympia; three daughters, Eva Christiansen, Des Moines, Iowa, Maria White, Port Angeles, Wash., and Ingrid King, Arvada, Colo.; a son, Tomas Gardebring, Edina, Minn.; and a brother, Pastor Per Medin, Sweden; and eight grandchildren.
Jeffrey Monroe
Jeffrey L. Monroe, 45, 1714 Omaha Drive, Bismarck, died Nov. 1, 1998, in his home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jeannette Hickman officiating. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with full military rites provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326.
Visitation will begin today from 5-7 p.m. at the Bismarck Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
Jeff was born July 2, 1953, the son of Jordan and Llola (Alling) Monroe. He was raised in the Bismarck area. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force from 1973-1977 and afterward he attended North Dakota State University. Jeff graduated in 1987 with a degree in transportation.
He married Bernadette Hamilton on Sept. 15, 1988, in Lakeland, Fla. Jeff returned to Bismarck in 1991 and became employed with the state Department of Transportation as an engineer.
Jeff was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a member of North Dakota Abate for 10 years, where he served on the board of directors for 2 years. Jeff was also a member of the Army National Guard.
He is survived by his wife, Bernadette; two sons, Anthony and Nicholas; one daughter, Caitlin, all of Bismarck; his parents, Jordan and Llola Monroe, Orlando, Fla.; three brothers, David, Bismarck, Greg, Killdeer, and Scott, Dickinson; two sisters, Melissa Hager and Michelle Hager, both of Littleton, Colo.; seven nieces and eight nephews; and his mother-in-law, Florence Hamilton, Backus, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a niece, Amanda; his grandparents and his father-in-law.

Sylvia Lennick
MINOT -- Sylvia Lennick, 68, Minot, and formerly of Mandan, died Nov. 1, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. CST Wednesday at Bismarck Evangelical Church of North America with the Rev. Gordon Kroecker officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today and 9-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Dakota Memorial Chapel, Bismarck, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 tonight at Dakota Memorial Chapel.
Sylvia was born on Aug. 14, 1930, the daughter of Matthew and Matilda Schmidberger in Munich, Germany. She was raised and educated in Munich, Germany. She furthered her studies at a modeling and acting college. She met Armin Lennick while he was in Germany with the military. She came to the United States, and Armin and Sylvia were married on Nov. 18, 1956 in rural Glen Ullin. Following their marriage, they moved to Mandan until 1961, when they moved to Minot. Sylvia had a modeling school and worked with the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. In 1969 she became the state director of the pageants. She was also very active in community affairs of Minot.
She is survived by her husband, Armin; one son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Susanne, Newman Lake, Wash.; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Henry Smith, Okinawa, Japan; four grandchildren; three sisters, Sigrid Luftl, Ebersberg, Germany, Paula Romer, and Erika Heinze, both of Munich, Germany; and one brother, Karl Schuder, Munich, Germany.

Susan Koenig
UNDERWOOD -- Mrs. Susan E. Koenig, 87, Bismarck, formerly of Underwood, died Oct. 5, 1996, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Underwood, with the Revs. Wesley Gerber, Leslie Koenig and James Koenig officiating. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Susanna Emilia Reiser was born Jan. 21, 1909, near Washburn, to John and Minnie B. (Linstaedt) Reiser. She grew up on her parents' farm six miles east of Washburn, where she attended rural school. She graduated from Washburn High School in 1928. She then attended Minot Normal School and received her teaching certificate. She taught rural schools in the Washburn and Beulah areas for five years.
She married Ferdinand Koenig, June 12, 1933, near Washburn. They made their home four miles east of Underwood and were dairy and grain farmers. They retired from farming and moved into Underwood in October 1961. She then worked as a baker for 16 years at Park Inn Cafe at Underwood.
She was a charter member of First Baptist Church, Underwood, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years and was active in the Women's Missionary Society.
Ferdinand died Oct. 19, 1981. She continued to live in Underwood until 1990, when she moved a condominium at Capitol View Estates in Bismarck. She had been a resident of Bismarck Baptist Home this past year. She was a member of Bismarck Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Eilene and Donald Doble, Parkers Prairie, Minn.; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Robert and Lynette, Carrington, Donald and Sue, Glen Burnie, Md., and Janice Schimke, Bismarck; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Ruby and Orrin Enockson, Bismarck, and Elsie Melick, Tipton, Iowa; and one brother, Elmer Reiser, Sommerset, Mass.
The family prefers memorials to First Baptist Church, Underwood.
Camilla DeCouteau
Camilla "Kim" DeCouteau, 59, 700 S. 12th St. No. 269, Bismarck, died Nov. 29, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at Park View Bible Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Gorden Brown officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, all at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and for one hour prior to services at the church.
Camilla was born May 28, 1938, in Cannon Ball, to Frank and Margaret (Rattling Tail) Young Bear. She attended school at Flandreau Boarding School and Fort Yates Public School. She met John DeCouteau in the mid 1960's and started a family together. They were later married in 1980 at Fort Yates. In the late 1970's, she went back to school for secretarial training. After her schooling, she started working for the University of Mary, and worked there until October of this year, when her health would no longer allow her to work.
She enjoyed reading and listening to country music. She also enjoyed visiting with her family.
She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Sandra Kaye and Armando Vazques, Washington State, and Lonna Gail DeCouteau, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, John, Bismarck; one step-daughter, Margaret DeCouteau, Solen; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Louis and Rose DeCouteau, Solen; three sisters, Colleen Mosholder, Hannaford, and Marlene Clark and Jackie Miller, both of Fort Yates; one brother, Kingman Young Bear, Lisbon; nine grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; an infant daughter, Wanda Louise; two brothers, Franklin and Calvin; and one sister, Annabelle.
Albert Meier
TURTLE LAKE -- Albert J. Meier, 91, Turtle Lake, died Dec. 2, 1997, in a Watford City nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, with the Rev. Norman Paskowsky officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey.
Visitation will be from 1:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Albert J. Meier was born March 10, 1906, at Harvey, to John and Mary (Heinrichsohn) Meier. He grew up on his parent's farm near Harvey, in Pony Gulch Township where he attended rural school. As a young man, he farmed and ranched with his father. He married Bertha Baier on June 15, 1930, in rural Harvey. They farmed in the Denhoff-Goodrich area until 1956, when they moved to Keene, where he worked for Oil Field Services until he retired. In 1975, they moved to Turtle Lake where they lived until entering the Good Sheperd Home in Watford City this past October.
He was active in his church and was an avid reader. He enjoyed watching baseball. He loved music and enjoyed singing. His family was his greatest joy and he especially loved his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha; three daughters and sons-in-law, Vangie and Mel Bentz, Bismarck, Donna and Peter Rauser, Watford City, and Carol and Gordon Risa, Fargo; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Clara Meier, Harvey, and Bertha Schlenker, Thief River Falls, Minn.; one brother, Ernest, West Sacramento, Calif.; and 11 nieces and nephews.
