Richard Bertie
DICKINSON -- Richard C. Bertie, 75, Dickinson, died Nov. 24, 1998, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Saturday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, with the Rev. Jerry Kautzman officiating.
Richard Bertie was born March 24, 1923, in Minneapolis, to Richard and Emma (Kilen) Bertie. He was educated in Devils Lake and attended University of North Dakota. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, and attended midshipman's school at the Great Lakes Training Center and Northwestern University. Richard was discharged from the Navy in 1946 as a Lieutenant J.G. He returned to UND and graduated in 1947. Richard married Ann Pierce in Langdon in 1948. He was employed with Northwestern Sheet and Iron Works of Wahpeton for 30 years.
Richard was a member of B.P.O.E. and Dickinson Golf Association. He also volunteered for R.S.V.P. and A.A.R.P.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Rick and Josie, Coon Rapids, Minn.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Jim Shearer, Minnetonka, Minn., Kathleen and Don Nordquist, Bismarck, and Suzanne and Dwight Lindquist, New Hope, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and one sister, Patricia Froehlich, Roseburg, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one sister.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the donor's choice.

Julia Ponga
Julia Ponga, 72, Bismarck, died Nov. 24, 1998, in a Grand Forks hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, at St. James Episcopal Church, Cannon Ball, with the Rev. John Floberg officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, and from 11 a.m. until service time on Monday, at the church.
Julia was born on Jan. 19, 1920, in Cannon Ball, the daughter of Daniel and Bertha (His Road/Blue Pipe) Ponga.
She is survived in death by nieces and nephews, Freeland Dogskin, Fort Yates, Verna Dogskin, Honolulu, Hawaii, Nathan Dogskin, Cannon Ball, Delmar Ponga, Bismarck, Gene Ponga, Mandan, Shawn Carry Moccasin, Mandan, Mary Jane Kaseman, Bismarck, and Adele Little Dog, Little Eagle, S.D.

Ruth Swenson
KULM -- Ruth Swenson, formerly of Kulm, died Nov. 26, 1998, in the Wishek nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Kulm Baptist Church. Further arrangements are pending with Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm.
Leo Frederick
Leo D. Frederick, 72, Mandan, died Nov. 27, 1998, at his daughters home in Mandan after a brief battle with cancer. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Paul D. Fiske officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, south of Mandan.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday, and after 9 a.m. Monday, until the time of the service, both at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.
Leo was born on Jan. 12, 1927, in Morton County, the son of Fred J. and Marie A. (Schultz) Frederick. Born and raised on the family homestead. He lived and farmed there until he retired in 1989. He married in 1959 and raised six children. While a resident at Liberty Heights in Mandan, he did volunteer work there as well as for Aid, Inc.
He was a member of the Farmers Union and First Lutheran Church. A very sociable man, Leo made friends everywhere he went and enjoyed a game of cards as well as old time music.
He will be deeply missed by those who survive him, including his four sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry D., Vanceboro, N.C., Norman J. and Sally, Mandan, Jeffrey T., Mandan, and Ted J. and Dorothy, Vanceboro; one daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia M. and David Schoonover, Mandan; six grandchildren, Britney, Kassondra, Kimberly and Cody Schoonover, and Devin and Nigel Frederick; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Erma Walker, Ruth Keller, and Iris and Clarence Ziniel, all of Mandan; and Vernon Wenger, Washington; and special friends, Arnold Landgrebe and Richard Hagestuen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Paul; and two sisters, Ruby Wenger and Esther Walker. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)
Kenneth Yeiter
Kenneth Yeiter, 77, 1310 Meredith Drive, died Nov. 25, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Art Scanson and Rick Fossum officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck, with full military honors provided by VFW Post No. 1326.
Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, both at Eastgate Funeral Service, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Kenneth Yeiter was born on July 31, 1921, in La Crosse, Wis., the son of Reuben and Zelpha (Camp) Yeiter. He was raised and educated in LaCrescent, Minn., graduating from high school in 1939. He entered the United States Army in 1941. He was discharged in 1946, after serving in World War II. He moved to Bismarck and was employed by the North Dakota Highway Department. He entered Federal Civil Service in 1950, at Fort Lincoln during the Korean Conflict. He and Eileen Schmidt were married on Feb. 14, 1951, in Bismarck. In 1958, he transferred to the United States Postal Service and was a letter carrier until he retired in 1979.
He was a member of McCabe United Methodist Church, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, where he was the treasurer of the local chapter, and was very active in the Bismarck area with the local veterans organizations. He was Past Commander of the American Legion Post No. 1326. Ken was very active in the VFW's Funeral Honor Guard, helping to give military honors to many of Bismarck's fallen veterans.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen; one sister, Pearl Swedlund, Mora, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
