Alex James
ST. JOHN -- Alex Joshua James, 83, St. John, died March 16, 1998, in the Rolla hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at St. John Community Center, St. John. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Vera; three sons, Pat and Roy, St. John, and John, Ulysses, Kan.; four daughters, Betty Gustafson, Fay Indvik, Joy Berginski, and Jill Pairisien, all of St. John; one brother, Fredrick, Bismarck; and seven sisters, Mary Boppre, Bottineau, Dora Baker, Sawyer, Helena Rudquist, Minneapolis, Margaret Bursinger, Bismarck, Irene Haas and Della Gustafson, both of St. John, and Laura Funk, Helena, Mont. Frances Austin
MINOT -- Frances E. Austin, 86, Minot, died March 15, 1998, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at First Baptist Church, Minot. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, later in the spring.

She is survived by one daughter, Voni Kirkman, Kansas City, Mo.; six sons, Theodore Jr., Minot, Bob, Neveon, Calif., Ken, Underwood, Minn., Don, Lodi, Calif., Jim, Sioux City, Iowa, and Tim, Bismarck. (Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot)

Joni Weyrauch
RAY -- Joni Kay Weyrauch, 18, Ray, died March 15, 1998, near Williston. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. today, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Ray. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her parents, Mark and Mary; one brother, Kyle; and her grandparents, Charles and Lois Ann Daniel, and Chauncy Weyrauch, all of Ray. (Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga)

Harris Crimmins
Harris "Bud" Crimmins, 80, Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Bismarck, died March 17, 1998, in Phoenix. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, both at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service.

Joel Long
Joel Bernard Long, 96, Englewood, Fla., formerly of Bismarck, died Feb. 17, 1998, in Englewood. Services were held at the Englewood United Methodist Church and National Cremation Society.

He is survived by one son, John, Bella Vista, Ark.; and one daughter, Phoebe Coder, Norcross, Ga.

John Lyon
WILLISTON -- John B. Lyon, 77, Williston, died March 14, 1998, in a Tucson, Ariz., hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Dean Heath
Dean Heath, 67, Bismarck, died March 16, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held in Aberdeen, S.D. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Lester Deckert
Lester "Les" Deckert, 72, 1401 Eastwood St., Bismarck, died March 6, 1998, in a Mesa, Ariz., hospital. Services were held in Mesa on March 12, 1998 at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Mesa. A memorial service and burial will be held at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, in the spring.

Les was born Oct. 18, 1925 in Bismarck, to Joseph and Martha (Haux) Deckert. He was educated in Bismarck and became a World War II Navy Veteran. On June 3, 1948, he married Lillian "Lil" Leingang. He worked as a pressman for Conrad Publishing Co. and United Printing, retiring in 1987, and has spent his winters in Mesa since then.

He was a member of American Legion, V.F.W. and the Elks.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian; three daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Dennis Gabriel, Fargo, Patrice and John Stumpf Jr., West Fargo, and Geralynn and Rodney Weber, Durango, Calif.; his grandchildren, Jason and Kyle Stumpf, Jonathon and Claire Gabriel, Shannon, Justin and Ryan Weber; his mother, Martha Deckert, Bismarck; his sister, Joanne Deckert, Bismarck; and one brother, Robert, Minot.

He was preceded in death by his son, David; one granddaughter, Lindsay, and his father, Joseph.

Margaret Sauer
WATFORD CITY -- Margaret Sauer, 98, Watford City, and formerly of Mott, died March 12, 1998, in a Watford City nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Friday, at Zoar Congregational Church, Mott, with the Rev. Gary Wood officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyslope Cemetery, Mott.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. MST Thursday, at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott.

Special music will be provided by Jean Stull, organist, Nita Bertsch and Terry Stull, vocalists.

Casketbearers will be Delbert Schafer, Tom Trousdale, Jay Trousdale, David Hoffmann, Kent Yancy and George Stull.

Margaret Roth was born Oct. 31, 1899, in Berlin, Ukraine, Russia, the daughter of John Henry and Margaret (Baumesberger) Roth. She was 11 years old when she came to the United States with her parents, two brothers and two sisters. The family settled in the state of Washington. She was married to Nathaniel Sauer on Nov. 30, 1916, in Lind, Wash. They farmed there and later moved to North Dakota and were in the grocery business in Burt and later in Mott. Margaret moved to the Evergreen Inn in Dickinson in 1990. After a stroke in March 1996, she entered the Good Shepherd Home in Watford City and resided there until her death.

Margaret was a member of Zoar Congregational Church and Ladies Aid in Mott. She loved doing things for the church. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening, raising flowers, handiwork and visiting with family and friends.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Gladys, Littleton, Colo.; three daughters and one son-in-law, Alvina Trousdale, Mott, Gertrude Woody, Fresno, Calif., and Delores and Delbert Schafer, Watford City; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, on Sept. 12, 1986; six brothers and five sisters.

A memorial has been established. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott)

Jean M. Pearce
Jean M. Pearce, 85, 2710 Gateway Ave., died March 16, 1998, at her home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, at a later date.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. tonight, at the funeral home.

Jean was born May 22, 1912, to J.K. and Paula Murray at Bismarck. She grew up in Mott and graduated from Mott High School in 1928. She graduated from the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, Minn., in 1932. She taught music at Selfridge, for several years and married William R. Pearce in 1936 and they moved to Valley City. Jean and William moved to Bismarck in 1941, where he practiced law until his death in 1978.

Jean was a long time member of Mothers Club, Wednesday Study Club and Breakfast Club. She was an active member and past president of St. Alexius Hospital Auxiliary. Jean was an active longtime supporter of the Bismarck Public Library, Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra and Central Dakota Humane Society. She enjoyed and was skilled in needlework, quilting and ceramics. Her advocations included cooking, reading mysteries, gardening and traveling.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Murray R. and Delores, Bismarck, William P. and Ann, Bismarck, and Harry J. and Kathy, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; one sister, Patricia Von Rueden, Roseville, Minn.; one brother, William S. Murray, Palmdale, Calif.; and seven grandchildren, Steven R. Pearce, Phoenix, Ariz., Karen E. Pearce, Phoenix, Elizabeth Ann Pearce and Jean Irene Pearce, both of Bismarck, Susan Pearce, Chicago, Ill., Shannon Baker, Moscow, Russia, and Harry Mark Pearce, Evanston, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, George H. Baker IV and Pearce Harrison Baker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; and her brother-in-law, Dr. Harry O. Pearce.

Erling Sannes
Erling Sannes, 68, 2033 St. Benedict Drive, Bismarck, died March 18, 1998, in a local hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today and 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck.

Erling was born Jan. 31, 1930, in Westhope, the son of Melvin J. and Mildred (Madsen) Sannes. He attended Westhope schools and graduated from Westhope High School in 1947.

He attended the North Dakota School of Forestry and the University of North Dakota and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Mary. He received a master's degree from the University of Oklahoma.

In 1950, he was called to active duty with the 231st Combat Engineer Battalion of the North Dakota National Guard. He served in Korea until 1952, and various other posts until 1958, when he was discharged and returned to North Dakota.

Erling worked for the North Dakota Employment Security Bureau in Minot until 1964, when he moved to Bismarck and worked in various administrative positions at the Job Service State Office. After 28 years of service, he took early retirement in 1986 because of ill health.

After his retirement he devoted his time to research and writing, primarily on labor history, political activism and a variety of progressive issues. His articles and opinion writings have been published in several regional history journals as well as in several local and national newspapers.

One article about women homesteaders in North Dakota was published in Norwegian in a Norwegian history journal. He received the 1992 North Dakota History Award for the best-researched article published that year.

He was involved with a small group of parents in the early planning for the North Dakota retarded citizens lawsuit and in the enactment of the bill of rights for the disabled. He also represented Amnesty International in its human rights work in North Dakota.

Erling is survived by his wife, Irmgard; two daughters, Erika and Ingrid, both of Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Bruno and Jennifer Sannes, Aurora, Colo.; two granddaughters; four grandsons; and one great-grandson; four brothers, Gerald, Longmont, Colo., James, Tacoma, Wash., Laurence, Stage Coach, Nev., and Lowell, Seattle; and three sisters, Marion Brodersen, Souris and Bullhead City, Ariz., Helen Stewart, Fresno, Calif., and Eleanor Allen, Clear Lake, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lloyd; and two infant sons. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Louisa Mesaros
Louisa Koenig Mesaros, 84, Great Falls, Mont., formerly of Bismarck, died March 18, 1998, at her home. Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Charity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Robert Nordvall officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in the spring.

Visitation will be Monday from noon to 7 p.m. at Bismarck Funeral Home and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Louisa Stoller was born on Feb. 17, 1914, in Carson. She was the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Nickalous) Stoller. She was raised and educated in Carson. She married Edwin A. Koenig on Aug. 9, 1936. They farmed south of Carson along the Cannon Ball River.

Ed passed away on July 22, 1957. She married John Feist on Aug. 11, 1960. He passed away on May 9, 1961.

Louisa worked at National Laundry and Dry Cleaners for 10 years. She moved to Great Falls, Mont., and attended beauty school. She was a beautician for 15 years. She also had been a custom draper in Idaho for a number of years.

Louisa married Albert Mesaros on Nov. 2, 1977, in Great Falls.

She is survived by her husband, Albert; two daughters and sons-in-law, Arlene and Tom Sedlacek, Vancouver, Wash., and Elaine and John Schmidt, Solen; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Paulette Koenig, Acton, Calif.; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Kenneth and Becky Mesaros, Cascade, Mont.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and one sister, Frieda Wutzke.

Louisa was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Sebastian, Jacob, William, John, Heinrick, Ida, Irma, Fred, Lydia (Louisa's twin), Erna and Martha. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Edward Emter
GLEN ULLIN -- Edward Emter, 79, Glen Ullin, died March 19, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. MST Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with the Rev. Claude Seeberger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation begins after 4 p.m. MST Sunday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glen Ullin, where a prayer service and rosary will be said at 7 p.m. MST Sunday.

Edward was born on June 12, 1918, in rural Glen Ullin, to Val and Mary (Schaaf) Emter. He was raised and educated in rural Glen Ullin. He worked on a farm until he married Mary Kobilansky on Nov. 19, 1944.

Following their marriage, they moved to Spokane, Wash., where he worked in a naval supply yard. They returned to Glen Ullin where he worked for Woeste creameries and later for the Farmer Union.

In 1968, he started a bait and tackle business from which he was going to retire this upcoming year.

Ed enjoyed going fishing and bowling. He served on the credit committee at Glen Ullin Credit Union. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and American Bowling Congress.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Douglas, Glen Ullin, and Mark and LaRonna, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Allan Weiand, Wahpeton; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Adam, Glen Ullin, Ray, Fairfield, Calif., and Tony, Spokane, Wash.; and two sisters, Lena Pearson and Anna Thomas, both of Glen Ullin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and three brothers. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin)

Bernard Hartman
Bernard Hartman, 85, 1507 Second Ave. N.W., Mandan, died March 19, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Church of St. Joseph, Mandan, with the Rev. Al Leary officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until service time on Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan. A rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Sunday followed by a parish vigil at 8 p.m., both at Weigel Funeral Home.

Bernard was born on Dec. 13, 1912, in Shields, the son of Fabian and Rose (Harsche) Hartman. Bernard was raised and educated in the Shields area.

On Oct. 29, 1934, he married Regina Bachmeier at St. Gabriel's Church in Shields. They farmed in the Shields area and Bernard also was a mail route carrier for 30 years. They moved to Mandan in 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Regina; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Victor and Shirley, and Norman, all of Mandan; three daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Peter Kraft, and Bernadette and George Schaeffer, all of Selfridge, and Peggy and Einar Justesen, Beach; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, John, Mobridge, S.D.; and one sister, Gertrude Kahl, Mandan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Virginia; one brother, Whitey; and one sister, Josephine. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)
