Clifford Hinman
Clifford Hinman, 80, Bismarck, died Dec. 29, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Richard Hagestuen officiating. Burial will be in Baldwin Cemetery in the spring.
Clifford was born on March 17, 1917, in Morton County, the son of Hugh and Marion (Wiley) Hinman. He was raised and educated in the Solen area, where he owned and operated a bar from many years before entering road construction and boiler making. He married Hazel Chadwick in 1939 and Pearl Hurby in 1962. He married Margaret Ehnes on Jan. 31, 1970.
He was a member of Bismarck Eagles and the Moose Lodge for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; one daughter, Linda Foss, Albany, Ore.; two sons, Edwin and Delwin, both of Albany, Ore.; three step-daughters, Arlene Sears and Loretta Ehnes, both of Cody, Wyo., and Karen Ehnes, Greeley, Colo.; two step-sons, Herbert Ehnes, Riverdale, and Norman Ehnes, Longmount, Colo.; one son-in-law, Andrew Ehlis, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; and two brothers, Richard, Miles City, Mont., and Edward, Bozeman, Mont.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Judy; one step-son, Ron Ehnes; and one brother, Norman. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

John Oberlander
SCRANTON -- John A. Oberlander, 74, Scranton, died Dec. 30, 1997, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday, at Peace Lutheran Church, Scranton. Burial will be in Scranton Cemetery.

Phyllis Dardis
Phyllis Dardis, 85, Bismarck, formerly of Nortonville, died Dec. 27, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Transfiguration Catholic Church, Edgeley. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Edgeley.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. A prayer service will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
Phyllis A. Synoground was born Oct. 5, 1912, at Groton, S.D., the daughter of August and Martha (Charnack) Synoground. The family moved to Nortonville, where she graduated from high school in 1930. They later lived for a time in Valley City. On June 18, 1936, Phyllis married Francis Dardis at Nortonville. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm north of Nortonville. In 1945, Francis, Phyllis and their four children moved onto the Dardis family homestead, where they farmed until Francis retired. Following his retirement, they moved to Jamestown in 1988. He died in 1991, and Phyllis moved to Bismarck to reside with her daughter, Alita. She entered St. Vincents Care Center in 1995.
She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Nortonville, the Holy Spirit Altar Society, and spent a great deal of her time while living in Nortonville concerned with local school and church activities. She had a passion for reading and education as well as a love of travel, which she passed on to her children.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Alita and Raymond Zink, Bismarck; three sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene and Patt, Beaverton, Ore., Neil and Lavon, Lakota, and Jerome and Lisa, Green Cove Springs, Fla.; one brother, Darl Synoground, Lake Oswego, Ore.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law and his wife, Victor and Marion Dardis, Milwaukee; and three sisters-in-law, Belva Dardis, Oregon, Jean Dardis, Jamestown, and Elnora Dardis, Heartland, Wis.

Freda Rubbelke
Freda S. Rubbelke, 81, 1409 E. Rosser Ave., Bismarck, died Dec. 28, 1997, at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a prayer and vigil service will be said at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.
Freda was born April 6, 1916, to David and Margaret (Keck) Schlichenmayer, in McLean County. She attended school in McLean County and Bismarck High School, where she was valedictorian of her graduating class of 1933. She attended Jamestown College and earned a degree in Latin in 1937. She taught at Drayton (N.D.) High School for two years. Freda was an all-around athlete in high school and college, and she loved to swim. Freda married Leo H. Rubbelke on Sept. 2, 1941, in Bismarck. She worked for the Department of Public Instruction and the Bank of North Dakota.
Freda was very active in Catholic Daughters, St. Mary's parish, and was a member of Elkettes. She enjoyed playing bridge, sewing and embroidery. She did volunteer work for St. Alexius Medical Center Gift Shop.
She is survived by her husband, Leo; four sons and daughters-in-law, David and Caryle, Rochester Hills, Mich., Mark and Rosemary, Bismarck, Donald and Karen, Chardon, Ohio, and Dennis and Diane, Watertown, S.D.; one daughter, Sharon Dranow, Boca Raton, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Lydia Harrington, Portland, Ore., Alvina Knutson, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Christine Wohler, San Francisco; and one brother and sister-in-law, Gus and Ruth Meyers, Renton, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; one sister; and one grandson.

Martha Scheuffele
HEBRON -- Martha Scheuffele, 90, Hebron, died Dec. 29, 1997, in Hebron. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, with the Rev. Jean E. Rosewall officiating. Burial will be in First Congregational Cemetery, Hebron.
Visitation will be at Spangelo Funeral Home, Friday, for one hour prior to the service.
Organist will be Erma Klein and casketbearers will be family and friends of Martha.
Martha was born Dec. 5, 1907, in rural Streeter to Johann and Christina (Biedlinger) Steiger. She was raised and educated in Logan County. She married Jacob Scheuffele on June 19, 1928. Following their marriage, they farmed northwest of Hebron until retiring in 1971. Following retirement, they moved into Hebron where she has resided since.
She is survived by three daughters, Karen Sandoval, Hebron, Janice Magwood, Concord, N.C., and Sally Valentine, Summersville, S.C.; and 13 grandchildren. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron)

KENMARE -- Elsie S. Haxton, 92, Kenmare, formerly of Lignite, died Dec. 28, 1997, in a Kenmare hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today, at Christ Lutheran Church, Lignite. Burial will be in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Bowbells.
She is survived by three sons, Ormand, Minot, Kenneth, Renton, Wash., and Harvey, Plentywood, Mont.; and six daughters, Marcella Bergstreser, Port Angeles, Wash., Velma Smith, Portal, Doris Cron, Bowbells, Helen Enget, Powers Lake, Ruth Ann Hatch, Vernal, Utah, and Janice LaCoe, Bismarck. In the late 1960's Elsie and her husband, Fred, moved from Bismarck to Arizona. Elsie was employed as a housekeeper for Motorola for ten years, until she became ill.
She was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church, Arizona.
Elsie is survived by her husband, Fred; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Tillie and Edwin Oster, Hazen, Ruth and Irv Kienzle, Waterloo, Iowa, Ilene and Robert Boeckel, Bismarck, and Ardena and Gerald Alderin, Stanton; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Theophil and Ida Teske, Beulah, Calvin and Marion Teske, Fenton, Wash., and Reiny and Betty Teske, Bismarck; and one sister-in-law, Loretta Teske, Seattle, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Magdelene Teske; two brothers, Herbert and Richard Teske; and one sister, Olga Wolf.
The family prefers memorials to the Multiple Sclerosis Association.

Diane Johnson
Diane R. Johnson, 50, Westminster, Calif., and formerly of Bismarck, died Dec. 17, 1997, in California.
Diane, the daughter of Oscar and Rose (Volk) Johnson, attended schools and Bismarck State College. She graduated from University of North Dakota and moved first to Chicago and a few years later, to California, where she resided until her death.
She is survived by seven brothers, Eugene, Oscar, Kenneth and Dwight, all of California, Edward, Missouri, Wayne, Chicago, and Grant, Mont.; and one sister, Harriet (Johnson) Willard, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, James.
Magdalena Kolschefski
