Alvina G. Hagen Schon, 68, Phoenix, Ariz., and formerly of McClusky, died Nov. 20, 1997, in Phoenix. Services were held Nov. 24, 1997. Burial was in Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery, Phoenix.

Melvin Maier
Melvin G. Maier, 64, died Dec. 28, 1997, at his home from an apparent heart attack. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Jeff Tengesdal and Peary Wilson officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today, and 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, both at Eastgate Funeral Service, and for one hour prior to services at the church. A prayer service will be held at 7 tonight at Eastgate Funeral Service.
Mel was born Nov. 27, 1933, in Grant County, a son of John and Bertha (Schaible) Maier. He was raised and educated in Elgin and graduated from Elgin High School.
He was a great champion of North Dakota agriculture. His involvement and expertise with wheat market development and promotion spanned more than three decades. Maier began his work with the North Dakota Wheat Commission in 1963, as assistant administrator. In 1967, he moved to Rotterdam, The Netherlands, where he worked for five years as European director of Great Plains Wheat to expand exports on behalf of seven state wheat commissions. He returned to the North Dakota Wheat Commission in 1972 to become administrator and celebrated his 25th year in that position in October 1997.
Prior to his work for wheat producers, Maier was a vocational agriculture teacher in Williston. He had entered the U.S. Air Force as an officer in 1956. A graduate of pilot training, he spent 2[1/2] years of his four years of service in Germany as an aircraft controller. Mel served in the Air National Guard of North Dakota, retiring in 1980 as a lieutenant colonel.
He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from North Dakota State University, Fargo, in agricultural education and agricultural economics. He grew up on a farm near Elgin, and first became interested in wheat marketing at age 14, when he toured the Minneapolis Grain Exchange as a member of the FFA state champion crops judging team.
He married Sharyl Eastgate on Jan. 26, 1985, in Bismarck. He continued to farm near Elgin.
He enjoyed hunting and attending NDSU events, especially cheering on the Bison at NCAA Division II football games.
He is survived by his wife, Sharyl; one son, Jonathon William Maier; one daughter, Rebecca Lynn Maier, all of Bismarck; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Leona Laugeness, Fargo, Sally and Dan Binek, Bowman, and Ruby and Ron Rivinius, Sun Lake, Ariz.; one brother and sister-in-law, Marlo and Alvina Maier, Dickinson; his mother-in-law, Ethel Eastgate, Larimore; two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Vicki Eastgate, Bismarck, Phil Eastgate, Beulah, and Patti and Gene Aanenson, Larimore; eight nephews and six nieces.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents and a brother-in-law, Lloyd Laugeness.

Richard Zachmeier
Richard G. Zachmeier, 77, Mandan, died Dec. 28, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Tom Richter officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, with military rites provided by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Post.
Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. today, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary said at 6:30 tonight, with a parish vigil at 7 this evening, all at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.
Richard was born July 14, 1920, in Morton County, a son of Joseph G. and Julia (Savage) Zachmeier. He was raised and educated in Mandan, graduating from Mandan High School in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army from June 3, 1939, to Oct. 21, 1945. On Feb. 23, 1957, he married Barbara Meek in Mandan. Richard was employed as a craftsman at Amoco Refinery for 26 years. He retired from there in 1981.
Richard was known for his gentle nature with a humble spirit. His family was blessed with his understanding and patience. He will be remembered fondly for his unique sense of humor and generosity. Richard was very family-centered, spending many hours with his family. He had a special talent for fixing things. His special interests were gardening, with a great love and appreciation for the land. He also enjoyed playing cards, fishing and going to the river for recreation. He spent many hours looking out his window, watching birds.
He was a member of Knights of Columbus, VFW, Amoco Retirees Club and a Battle of the Bulge Retirees Club.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Janice, Bismarck; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jill and Delvin Bueligen, Mandan, Julie and Glenn Bosch, and Janee Zachmeier, all of Bismarck; 11 grandchildren, Lisa, Sara, Kara, Lindsay and Molly Zachmeier, Justin, Chantel and Naomi Bueligen, Matthew, Michelle, and Megan Bosch; one brother, Paul, Mandan; and one sister, Josephine Winkler, Fargo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild, Rachel Bueligen.

Jerome Broome
Jerome Broome, 7, 3900 35th Ave. N.W., Mandan, died accidentally at home on Dec. 28, 1997. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Song Community Church, 3200 N. 11th St., Bismarck, with the Rev. Larry Jahnke officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
Jerome was born Aug. 5, 1990, to Charles and Deb (Scoular) Broome, in Bismarck, and he attended Lewis and Clark Elementary School in Mandan.
Jerome loved to hunt, fish, ride horses, and he loved other outdoor activities.
Jerome is survived by his mother, Deb Broome, and special friend Keith Johnson, Mandan; his father, Charles Broome, Springfield, Mo.; his aunts and uncles, Diana and Don Peterson, Washburn, and Dean and DelRay Scoular, Sandborn; and his grandmother, Edna Friend, Carl Junction, Mo.; he is also survived by Louis, Buddie, and Mae Matney, friends of the family, Seymour, Mo.; and many other relatives and friends.
Jerome was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Bert Strand
HETTINGER -- Bert A. Strand, 84, Hettinger, died Dec. 28, 1997, in Hettinger. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST today at Hettinger Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Stephen Sherer officiating. Burial will be in Hettinger Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Bert's grandchildren. Special music will be provided by Charlotte Morey and Betty Svihovec.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to services at the church today.
Bert Arnold Strand was born on Jan. 1, 1913, on his parents' farm south of Regent to Sever and Julia (Everson) Strand. He grew up and attended rural school near Regent. He began farming with his parents. On Sept. 28, 1940, he married Myrtle Lien at her parents' farm near Regent. They moved to a farm near Hettinger and began raising a family there. Bert and Myrtle moved into Hettinger in 1970, but Bert still went out to the farm until 1976.
He served as an Adams County commissioner, on the Southwest District Board of Health, the Adams County Social Services Board, the Richland Church Council, Hettinger Cemetery Board, the Library Board and was a member of the Eagles Club.
Bert enjoyed music and playing the accordian, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle; two sons, Galen, Bowman, and Trevor, Hettinger; two daughters, Nadine Mahler, Ephrata, Wash., and Karen Tanous, Bismarck; one brother, Lawrence, Regent; 10 grandchildren; and one great grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ted and Selmer; two sisters, Lillian Strand and Edna Hallen; and one daughter, Carol Strand, who died at birth. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger)
Donald Homer
Donald W. Homer, 82, Bismarck, died Dec. 26, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bernie Kunz officiating. Burial will be in State Center, Iowa.
The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to services at Bismarck Funeral Home.
Donald married Virginia Adams on Feb. 12, 1938, at State Center, Iowa. He was a World War II Army Veteran and worked at the Amoco Refinery from 1954-1973.
He was a member of American Legion, Elks, Eagles and AMVETS.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; one daughter, Linda Leno, Bismarck; two grandsons and their wives, Lance and Karen Leno, and Loren and Terri Leno; and four great-granddaughters, Nicole, Samantha, Jessica and Danielle Leno.

Albert Rittenbach
Albert Rittenbach, 86, Miamisburg, Ohio, formerly of Turtle Lake, died Dec. 26, 1997, in Miamisburg.
Albert was born Feb. 2, 1911, and was raised and educated in rural Turtle Lake schools. He then went to Barbor College in St. Paul, Minn., came back home and purchased the Mercer Barber Shop. After several months, he sold the shop and moved to Miamisburg, Ohio, and started a barber shop there. He got married and raised a family there and worked in his shop until he retired.
He is survived by one daughter, Linda, and four grandchildren, Diana, Michael, Jeffery and Randy, all of Miamisburg; three sisters, Ida Littke, Lutz, Fla., Rose Hansen, Spokane, Wash., and Doris Skorec, Mesa Ariz.; and one brother, August Jr., Bismarck; three nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle; his parents; and two sisters, Otillia and Magdalena.
Ervin Nicklaus
FARGO -- Ervin Nicklaus, 70, Fargo, died Dec. 27, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Ivers-Landblom Funeral Home Chapel, Fargo. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
