Esther Frala
Esther LaVern (Lervick) Frala, 86, died Dec. 10, 1997, in a Mora, Minn., hospital. Esther had been living in Minnesota the past few years. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steven Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service and for one hour prior to services at the church.

Esther LaVern Frala was born in Binford to Ludwig and Anna Amundson on March 24, 1911. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church.

She graduated from high school in Binford in 1927. She went to beauty school in Fargo. For many years she practiced her profession as a beauty operator.

She married Trygve Olac Lervick on Nov. 11, 1934. To this union, one daughter, Marlis, was born. Trig died in May of 1965. She married John Thomas Frala on Dec. 24, 1968, at Cambridge Lutheran Church, Cambridge, Minn. John died Nov. 20, 1975.

She recently moved to Cambridge, Minn., after living most of her life in Bismarck.

Some fifty-plus years ago, Esther entered a contest to name the new city created by the Garrison Dam. Her entry was Riverdale, as it is known today.

During World War II, Esther and Trig moved to Everett, Wash., to do their part for their country. During the year they lived there, they worked at Puget Sound Ship Yards. Esther was a "Rosie the Riveter," as it was known in those days.

She was active in Mandan Hospital Auxiliary until recently, creating many craft items in her spare time. She also was an avid golfer in her younger years and always enjoyed playing bridge.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Marlis and Charles Gronberg of Cambridge; four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, Kjia and her husband Chuck Orstad and their children Charissa, Chase, Cayle and Chressin, all of Raymore, Mo., Guy Gronberg and his wife Diana and their children Gavin and Grace, all of Lee's Summit, Mo., Gwen Daly and her husband Todd and their children Erin, April and Brian, all of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Trent Gronberg and his wife Carolyn and their son, Gaeton, all of Lee's Summit; also many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Trygve, in 1965; her husband, John, in 1975; two sisters; and two brothers. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Kathryn Iverson
WILLISTON -- Kathryn Iverson, 95, Williston, died Dec. 12, 1997, in a Williston nursing home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Ada Larson
WILLISTON -- Ada Larson, 68, Williston, died Dec. 11, 1997, in a Williston hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

She is survived by four sons, Larry and Keith, both of Aurora, Colo., Kelly of Williston and Mark of Duluth, Minn.; one daughter, Joan Udland of Aurora, Colo.; and two sisters, June Huff and Rose Ortloff, both of Williston. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Gerald Leingang
Gerald C. Leingang, 46, 2899 County Road, Mandan, died Dec. 12, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, with the Rev. Austin Vetter officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites provided by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today with a parish vigil said at 7 tonight at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, and from 9 a.m. until time of services at the church on Monday.

Gerald was born on March 10, 1951, in Solen, the son of Anton and Caroline (Haff) Leingang. He was raised and educated in the Solen area and graduated from Solen High School in 1969.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. On Aug. 21, 1971, he married Mary Messer in Richardton. He was first employed at Twin City Testing and later on worked for Industrial Constractors, INC.

He raised quarter horses and his dream was fulfilled when he won the Dakota Territory Futurity Horse Race this year.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; one son, Jaime of Mandan; two daughters, Gina and Tia, both of Mandan; and three brothers and one sister-in-law, Larry and Laura of Richardton, Vern of St. Anthony, and Harvey of Mandan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Violet Lervold
CANDO -- Violet J. Lervold, 78, Cando, formerly of Bismarck, died Dec. 12, 1997, in the Cando hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Egeland.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Irma Markley
Irma Markley, 84, Bismarck, died Dec. 14, 1997, at her home. Arrangements are pending with Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck.

Elsie Oliver
MCCLUSKY -- Elsie Oliver, 102, McClusky, died Dec. 12, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, McClusky. Burial will be in McClusky City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Elsie Prince was born on March 24, 1895, in Birmingham, Mich., to Fred and Nellie (Leach) Prince. In 1905, the family moved to North Dakota and homesteaded in the John's Lake area southwest of McClusky.

She grew up and attended school there. She married Hubert H. Oliver on Nov. 15, 1913, in McClusky. They lived and resided in the McClusky area most of their married life.

During their retirement, they spent the winter months in Arizona and Florida. Her husband died on Sept. 2, 1985. She moved to the Bismarck Baptist Home in November of 1989.

She was a member of United Methodist Church and its ladies aid in McClusky. She was a lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary, McClusky, and was a Gold Star Mother. She was also a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was a member of Busy Bees Homemaker Club in Pickardsville area and thoroughly enjoyed the loving relationships she shared with all.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Amidon Triebwasser of McClusky; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 22 great great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alfred Prince of Portland and Orlyne Prince of Bemidji, Minn.; two sisters, Marie Lindell of Orlando, Fla., and Isobel Masterson of Minneapolis; and one sister-in-law, Maeolla Oliver of Tigard, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Harley, in 1988, and Glen in 1945 during World War II; four brothers, Vern, Earl, Howard, and Paul; and two sisters, Pearl and Bethel. (Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky)

Rachel Redinger
JAMESTOWN -- Rachel Redinger, 80, Jamestown, died Dec. 13, 1997, in a Jamestown nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Haut Funeral Chapel, Jamestown. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown.

She is survived by two daughters, Virginia Kamoni of Jamestown, and Marlene Piatz of Clinton, Iowa; four sons, Leonard of West Bend, Wis., James of Lead, S.D., Donald of Manitowoc, Wis., and Larry of Milwaukee; one sister, Frieda Kirschenmann of Jamestown; and three brothers, Ervin Wittmier of Hampton, Va., Jake Wittmier of Streeter, and Clifford Wittmier of Hardin, Mont. James Schedel
James Schedel, 62, 1119 University Drive, died Dec. 14, 1997, in Bismarck. Arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Edward Schlittenhard
FARGO -- Edward Schlittenhard, 86, Fargo, formerly of Gackle, died Dec. 12, 1997, in a Fargo nursing home. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Baptist Church, Gackle. Burial will be in Gackle City Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Martha; one son, DuWayne of Fargo; one brother, Robert of Cavalier; and three sisters, Katherine Weikom, Almalia Reiger and Emelia Schlittenhard, all of Fargo. (Haut Funeral Home, Gackle)

Clara Stanley
HAZEN -- Clara Stanley, 70, Hazen, died Dec. 11, 1997, in a Glen Ullin nursing home. Services will be 10 a.m. MST Monday at Salem United Methodist Church, Hazen. Burial will be in Hazen City Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Gay; one son, Steven of Grafton; five daughters, Cheryl Wiedrich of Beulah, Marlys Frederiksen of Montrose, Minn., Debra Jonker of Breckenridge, Minn., Betty Randall of Robbinsdale, Minn, and Jacque Zinnie of Blaine, Minn.; one brother, Herb Schuh of Sumner, Wash., and two sisters, Frieda Peterson of Stanton, and Hilda Tice of Tacoma, Wash. Gladys Stannard
WILLISTON -- Gladys M. Stannard, 98, Williston, died Dec. 9, 1997, in Ballwin, Mo. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Faith United Methodist Church, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

She is survived by three daughters, Myrtie Johnson of Spokane, Wash., Joyce Park of Annandale, Va., and Gladys Stannard of Ballwin; two sons, George of Stafford, Va., and James of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and one sister, Adah Miner. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

David Vogel
David A. Vogel, 82, Bismarck, died Dec. 13, 1997, in the Steele nursing home. Further arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Skye Binder
TAPPEN -- Skye Lee Binder, 17, Tappen, was taken from us on July 20, 1997, as the result of a fatal automobile accident. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Tappen School Gym, with burial in Fisher Cemetery, Tappen.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel.

Skye was born Nov. 21, 1979, in Bismarck, to Ron and Amy (Hoffmann) Binder. He was raised in Tappen, having recently moved to Crystal Springs, where he truly loved the country and outdoors. He would have been entering his senior year at Tappen High School. Skye enjoyed life to its fullest. He loved all sports, being captain of the Tappen Comets basketball team, and received several awards.

He was a member of Tappen Men's Softball Team, and played high school baseball for the Steele/Dawson Pirates. Skye took tae kwon do for three years and loved it. He would hunt and fish every day possible, and especially enjoyed it with his cousin, Brandon. He and his dad, Junior, Rory, Brandon, Jerry and Brice, had many a good hunting trips. He was on the honor roll at Tappen High School and received several scholastic awards, and was named to Who's Who Among High School Students. Skye loved to draw wildlife pictures, and he would share them with friends and family. He was a big NASCAR fan, and was so proud to have personally met Dale Earnhardt. Skye was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Tappen.

Skye worked for K&K Well Drilling at the time of his death. He worked for several area farmers and Mittleider and Barnick Produce. He was also employed at Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge in 1996. Skye loved to spend time with his niece, Brianna, and nephew, Kohl. Skye is Brianna's godfather. He always took special time for little Logan, his cousin.

He is survived by his parents, Ron and Amy; his sister and brother-in-law, Heather and Brian Moser; a niece, Brianna, and nephew, Kohl, all of Wahpeton; his grandparents, Rudy and Jackie Hoffmann, Medina, and Lorane Binder, Tappen; his great-grandmother, Mary Martel, Wishek; aunts and uncles, Rory and Kim Hoffmann, Medina, Rueben Jr. and Rhonda Binder, Steele, Rodney and Danni Binder, Bismarck; his cousins, Mandy, Brandon and Jared Binder, Steele, Logan Hoffmann, Medina, and Cassie Binder, Fargo.

Skye had a very special girl in his life, Laura Hasse. He is also survived by many grand-aunts and grand-uncles, relatives and many friends.

Skye was preceded in death by his grandfather, Rueben Binder.

Alice Gebhardt
Alice M. Gebhardt, 91, Bismarck, died July 18, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Kermit Culver officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Alice was born Oct. 17, 1905, at New Salem, to Charles and Meta (Zeutschel) Mathiesen. The oldest of five children, she was raised and educated in New Salem. She moved to Bismarck where she was a housekeeper for the late Gov. Sorlie in the old Governor's Mansion. She worked for many years in the alterations department of A.W. Lucas Co., retiring in 1970.

She was active in the Ladies Circles of the First United Methodist Church. Alice devoted her life to raising 12 children and her special interest was in crocheting and sewing. She married Godfred Gebhardt in Bismarck. Her husband died in 1977.

Alice is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Ruth and John Schmidt, Bismarck, JoAnn and Robert Nash, Park Rapids, Minn., Carol and Gene Hetland, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Kathy Garrett, Minneapolis; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Margaret Gebhardt, Bismarck, Ralph, Irving, Texas, Richard, Bismarck, Glen and Betty, Plentywood, Mont., James, Bismarck, Jack and Nancy, North Lake, Ill.; 34 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons; one daughter; and four brothers.

Sidney Holaday
JAMESTOWN -- Sidney Earl Holaday, Jamestown, died July 19, 1997, in his home. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at United Presbyterian Church, Jamestown, with burial in Greenfield Cemetery, Greenfield, Iowa.

Sidney was born Oct. 12, 1910, near Greenfield, the son of Charles Abner and Violet (Patton) Holaday. He received his education through high school in Greenfield. He graduated from Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa, in 1937, and received his master of science degree from Denver University in 1942. He married Alberta Frances Bart in Palmer Lake, Colo., June 8, 1939. He taught high school business courses and coached football, basketball, track and baseball at Winterset, Iowa, Limon, Colo., and Cresco, Iowa. He then taught and coached at Ellsworth Junior College, Iowa Falls, Iowa, and Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, Iowa, before coming to Jamestown in 1948. He was a professor of accounting and business at Jamestown College, becoming head of that department. He left the college in 1957 to practice accounting full time. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1949 and has had a public accounting firm in Jamestown until the present.

He was a member of American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, a member and past president of the North Dakota Society of Certified Public Accountants, twice a member and twice president of the North Dakota State board of Public Accountancy, the treasurer for 20 years and an elder for many years of the United Presbyterian Church, twice a member of Jamestown Library Board, a member for six years of the Jamestown Board of Education, a member of Jamestown College Board of Trustees, a member and past-president of Rotary Club, a member of Masonic Lodge, the Jamestown Country Club, Elks and Sons of the American Revolution.

He was a man who loved and gave generously of his time and talents to his family, friends, community and country. He will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Alberta; one son, Bart, Chicago; one daughter, Janet, Jamestown; one grandson, Patrick; one granddaughter, Brett; three brothers; and one sister.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and one brother.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Cowles-Hopper Fund at Simpson College, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Almore Christianson
ROLETTE -- Almore "Christy" Christianson, 87, Rolette, died July 20, 1997, in Mandan. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Valle Lutheran Church, Rolette, with the Rev. Ann Bathers officiating. Burial will be in Rolette Cemetery.

Almore Mellum Christianson was born June 10, 1910, at Rugby, the son of John and Ida (Mellum) Christianson. He attended school in Rolette and graduated from University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. He spent most of his life in the Rolette area other than when he worked on the construction of the Al-Can Highway. He married Eunice Young on July 26, 1935, in Rugby. During his years in Rolette, he owned Christianson Chevrolet and later sold cars for Theele Chevrolet in Rolla. After their retirement, he and Eunice spent winters in Arizona before moving to the Bismarck-Mandan area in 1991. They moved to Bertram, Texas, in 1997.

"Christy" will always be remembered for his love of children, whether they were his own, his grandchildren or great-grandchildren, or the neighbor's children. He loved to hunt and fish and some will remember his good "fish" stories.

He is survived by his wife, Eunice; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Jerry Walter, Bertram, and Sandra and Rodney Foss, Mandan; two sisters, Lillian Arnold, Langdon, and Elaine Flatten, Edmonds, Wash.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
