Lydia Zuern
HAZEN -- Lydia Zuern, 87, Hazen, died July 11, 1997, in the Hazen hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday, at English Lutheran Church, Hazen, with the Rev. Duane Hanson officiating. Burial will be in Hazen City Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Edwin Zuern, Jerry Knoell, Archie Zuern, Melvin Pfeifer, Elmer Miller and Johnny Schlecht.
Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. MDT today, at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.
Lydia was born Jan. 30, 1910, south of Beulah, the daughter of John and Rosina (Huber) Schnaidt. She was raised and educated at a rural school in Mercer County. After school Lydia helped out on the family farm until her marriage to John F. Zuern, Jan. 1, 1930, southwest of Beulah. After marriage John and Lydia farmsteaded in the Beulah-Hazen area until their retirement in 1957 when they moved into Hazen. John died in 1960. Lydia entered the Pioneer Park Home, Hazen in 1991. She entered the Knife River Care Center, Beulah in 1995 and had lived there since.
Lydia loved to crochet, make quilts, baking, cooking, visiting with friends and playing cards. She was a member of English Lutheran Church and Hazen Senior Citizens.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Clarence and Phyllis, Hazen; one daughter, Judy Willman, Bismarck; four grandchildren, Annette Schroeder, Brad Zuern, Justine Willman and Jason Willman; four great-grandchildren, Kyle and Rachel Schroeder, Brenden Willman and Alexus Zuern; and three sisters, Rose Auwinger and Christine Hilz, both of the Senior Suites, Hazen, and Katrina Reiner, Elm Crest Manor, New Salem.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; and three brothers, John, Jake and George.
Ben Marquart
NAPOLEON -- Ben Marquart, 89, Napoleon, died July 10, 1997, in the Napoleon care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon. Burial will be in St. Philip Neri Cemetery, Napoleon.
Ben Marquart was born Oct. 25, 1907 at Napoleon, the son of Joseph and Barbara (Weigel) Marquart. He attended the local school where he received his elementary education and grew to manhood in the vicinity. He married Clementine Kuhn, Nov. 31, 1931 at Valley City. They made their home on a farm northwest of Napoleon until 1956 when they moved into Napoleon. Ben owned and operated the Spot Bar until 1969, and then the Napoleon School Buses until 1975. He went to work for Wentz Equipment until retiring in 1982. In 1991 he became a resident of area nursing homes. Following the death of his wife, Aug. 3, 1994 he continued to reside in the Napoleon Care Center.
He was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, numerous Kroeber Township and school boards, and was also an avid Democrat and New York Yankee fan.
He is survived by his children, Bernie Marquart, and Betty (Peter) Sperle, all of Napoleon, Phyllis Roemmich, Jan Scholl and Marion (Dwayne) Theil, all of Bismarck, Marge (Jesse) Jackson, Lacey, Wash., and Sandy Hall, Boise, Idaho; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret Welder, Napoleon, Ann (Alvin) Muller and Betty (Joe) Schumacher, all of Lodi, Calif.

Ervin Svihla
ST. ANTHONY -- Ervin Svihla, 68, St. Anthony, died July 11, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Richard Hagestuen officiating. Burial will be in St. Johns Cemetery, south of Mandan.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue one hour prior to services, at the church.
Ervin was born Jan. 22, 1929 on the family farm south of Mandan, the son of Louis and Sylvia (Bures) Svihla. He was raised on the family farm and educated in rural Mandan. As a young man he worked on area farms and served in the United States Air Force. Following his discharge he started driving trucks for various companies. He was once married to Shirley Veith. On Aug. 8, 1975 he married Sandra Dworshak at Mandan.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and David Olson, Denver; two sons, Dan, Aurora, Colo., and Bryan, Woodlawn, Tenn.; three stepchildren, Rebecca and Mike Greff, Rapid City, S.D., Jamie and Deb Veith, and Charles and Patty Veith, all of Bismarck; one sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Robert Kottsick, Mandan; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Ernestine, and Elgie and Rosalie, all of Mandan; one grandson; and six step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Glen.
Robert Curfman
Robert Earl Curfman, 63, 611 N. 29th St., Bismarck, died July 9, 1997, in Custer, S.D. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, at the funeral home, where a vigil will be held at 7 p.m.
Robert Earl was born April 22, 1934 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Earl James and Lottie Louise ``Jo" (Spicer) Curfman. He was raised and attended school in Keokuk. He later attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating cum laude, with a degree in business in 1956. Following college, he served in the United States Navy for two years. In 1960 he was married.
Bob resided in California from 1959 to 1977, where he worked as an independent sales representative for several manufacturing firms. In 1977, he moved with his family to Missoula, Mont. where he continued his career as a sales representative, until returning to California in 1982. In 1994 Bob took up acting, appearing in the movies ``The Cable Guy" and ``Jingle All the Way," as well as making several television appearances.
Bob was an aficionado of Northern Plains Indian History and Artifacts. One of his creations, an authentic reproduction painted buffalo robe, is on display at the Knife River Indian Village Museum in Stanton.
He is survived by one daughter, Shannon, Los Angeles; a son and daughter-in-law, Sean and Denise, Bismarck; two grandchildren, Shane and Brenna Curfman, Bismarck; five brothers, Joe, Jim, Tom, Chuck and Steve Curfman; and his stepmother, Dorothy Curfman.
William Kohler
GLEN ULLIN -- William ``Bill" Kohler, 87, Glen Ullin, died July 12, 1997, in Glen Ullin. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Tuesday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with the Rev. Claude Seeberger O.S.B. officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, rural Glen Ullin.
Visitation begins at 4 p.m. Monday, at the church, and is ongoing until time of services. A wake service and rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday, at the church.
William was born Jan. 13, 1910 in rural Glen Ullin, the son of Mathias and Eva Marie (Skalsky) Kohler. He was raised and educated in Morton County where his father homesteaded. He married Magdalena (Molly) Bahm on Sept. 30, 1930 at St. Joseph Church. Following marriage they farmed in Grant County. In 1938 he took over his father's homestead and farmed their until retirement in 1976. They moved into Glen Ullin in 1978 where they resided since.
From his youth the joy of his life was playing the accordion. He played for weddings, dances and parties and for his own personal pleasure. His last public performance was Aug. 3, 1996 at his granddaughter's wedding. The Lord called home his faithful servant of 87 years. He was a faithful steward of the land, loving husband and father and a lasting inspiration to all who had the honor of being his friend. Bill entered the Marian Manor Nursing Home in June of 1994.
He was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Sacred Heart Catholic church and Knights of Columbus. He was also chairman of Monson School Board, and president of Marian Manor Residents Association.
He is survived by his wife, Molly; five sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Irene, Dickinson, John and Sandy, Kenosha, Wis., James and Kathy, and Gene and Diane, all of Glen Ullin, and Thomas and Marge, Alliance, Neb.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Lorraine and Leonard Rambousek, Glen Ullin, and Arlene Hord and Shirley and Russ Staiger, all of Bismarck; 27 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Florence Marx, Tillie Collette and Magdalena Tapp.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Levon Copeland; and one grandchild, Margaret Ann Copeland.

Helen Basting
Helen M. Basting, 75, Grand Forks, died July 12, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas E. Kramer officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today, at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services, at the church.
Helen Mosbrucker was born July 28, 1921 in Fort Clark, N.D., the daughter of Rufus and Katherine Mosbrucker. She was raised and educated in Center. After graduating from Center High School, Helen attended Dickinson Teachers College, and later would teach school at the Blue Grass and Center rural schools. On June 24, 1944 she married Frank Basting at Center. After their marriage they lived in Mandan, Center, Glen Ullin and Grand Forks.
Helen enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading and ceramics. She was involved with the Homemakers Club, Bridge Club, V.F.W. Auxiliary and various church activities.
She is survived by her husband, Frank, Grand Forks; three daughters and one son-in-law, Susan Edyveam and her friend, Dennis DiJulio, Seattle, Julie Boehler, Bismarck, and Carol and Kenny Fitterer, Lewistown, Mont.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Andy and Frances and Karen, all of Grand Forks; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Alice and George Seifert, and Dorothy and Joseph Seifert, all of Bismarck, and Agnes and Rudy Weizgarber, Phoenix, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; one brother in infancy; and one granddaughter, Marci Boehler.

Charlotte Tysver
HAZEN -- Charlotte Tysver, 83, Hazen, died June 24, 1997, in her home of natural causes. Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at English Lutheran Church, Hazen, with the Rev. Bill Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Hazen Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Thomas Tysver, Joel Pfliger, Dan Walsvik, Jon Walsvik, Free Karges and Steve Huber.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.
Charlotte was born Sept. 28, 1913, at Golden Valley, a daughter of the Rev. Hieronymus and Mary (Southeimer) Pirner. She was raised and educated in North Dakota and Minnesota. The family moved because of Charlotte's father's positions as a pastor. On Jan. 22, 1930, she married Harold "Hans" Tysver at Fargo. They farmed 5[1/2] miles southwest of Hazen all of their married lives. He died Jan. 14, 1972. Charlotte continued to live on the farm until the time of her death.
She was a member of English Lutheran Church, Hazen.
She is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Duane and Lucille, Hazen, Gerald and Judy, Anchorage, Alaska, Keith, Philipsburg, Mont., and James, Artesia, N.M.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Harold and Erna Pirner, Rapid City, S.D., The Rev. Reuben and Jean Pirner, Oak Harbor, Wash., and Mary Pirner, Morgantown, W.V.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; one brother, Walter; two sisters, Gertrude and Hildegaard; one grandson, Ronald Tysver; and one daughter-in-law, Janet (Miller) Tysver.
