Russell Harmon
Russell V. Harmon, 60, Bismarck, died April 3, 1999, at home of congestive heart failure. Services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. Samih Ismir officiating. Spring burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service.
Russell was born on Dec. 14, 1938, in Wolf Point, Mont., to Francis and Betty Harmon. He was raised in Watford City, and graduated from Watford City High School in 1956. After high school he worked in the Williston Basin oil fields for two years and married Sharon Wahus, also from Watford City, on Aug. 17, 1958.
Russell and Sharon moved to Spokane, Wash., where he received a certificate from the Spokane Technical and Vocational College in architecture and engineering. After working for a couple of years in Spokane, Russell moved his family back to North Dakota to be near the people he loved and to reside in the state he considered home.
Russell worked for many years in Bismarck as a mechanical draftsman and was also certified as a journeyman plumber. In 1985, he accepted a position with Montana-Dakota Utilities as a marketing technical specialist where he worked for 11 years until retiring in 1995.
Never one to slow down, Russell worked part-time as a salesman for Leichty Homes in Bismarck and developed rental properties with his older brother, Roger, in Minot for the two years preceding his death.
He loved the outdoors. Throughout his life, he spent as much time as possible camping and hunting with friends and family. He enjoyed his "deck squirrels" and always had an abundant supply of peanuts to feed them.
Russell was never without a smile, always willing to lend a hand to those in need and drew people to him wherever he was. He was a very special father, brother, uncle, partner, grandfather and friend. He touched the lives of many and will be missed by all.
Russell is survived by his partner, Jeani Campbell, Bismarck; his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Debbie Harmon, Pensacola, Fla.; his daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Mark Barbee, Anchorage, Alaska; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Roger and Phyllis Harmon, Minot, and Royce and Betty Harmon, Bozeman, Mont.; two grandchildren, Alexander Noon, Anchorage, and Christina Harmon, Pensacola; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Ronald "Chuck" Harmon.

Leo Rubbelke
Leo H. Rubbelke, 84, Bismarck, died April 6, 1999, at his home. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bismarck Funeral Home. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Leo Henry Rubbelke was born on Oct. 26, 1914, in Des Lacs, the son of Louis Henry and Gertrude Mary (Sieben) Rubbelke. He grew up on the family farm in the Des Lacs area and graduated valedictorian of his class in Berthold. At the age of 21, Leo moved to Bismarck and worked for the Gamble Stores. He married Freda Schlichenmayer on Sept. 2, 1941 in Bismarck. They moved to Rugby that same year where Leo purchased a Gamble Store.
In 1943, Leo sold the Gamble Store, enlisted in the Army and served in the West Pacific during World War II. He returned to live in Bismarck in 1946 and worked as an auditor for various Gamble Stores. He joined the North Dakota State Tax Department in March 1954 as an auditor. He retired as the manager of collections on July 31, 1977.
He held memberships with Knights of Columbus, Eagles, Elks, VFW, and American Legion. He was a devout Catholic and a benefactor of the St. Mary's Parish. He was actively involved in multiple parish functions, St. Mary's School and Parish, member of and was an adviser to the diocesan pastoral council. Leo was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and served as state deputy in the early '60s.
Words can't describe how much he will be missed by those who knew him.
He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, David and Caryle, Rochester, Mich., Mark and Rosemary, Bismarck, Donald and Karen, Chardon, Ohio, and Dennis and Diane, Watertown, S.D.; one daughter, Sharon Dranow, Delray, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers and sister-in-law, Louis, Minot, Edward and Marcella, Vancouver, Wash.; and one sister, Genevieve Rubbelke, Kenmare.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Freda on Dec. 28, 1997; three brothers; three sisters and two grandchildren.

Betty Gust
Betty L. Gust, 66, Mandan, died April 5, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Stephen Eastin officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and 8-9:30 a.m. Thursday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.
Betty was born on Jan. 18, 1933, in Grafton, the daughter of Peter and Margaret (McFerguson) Friesen. She married Donald Rudolph Gust on Feb. 25, 1955, in International Falls, Minn. She and Don have been residents of Mandan since moving here in 1961.
Betty's lively spirit was and will always be with us in many ways. Her philosophy of life was to "Live Well, Laugh Often and Love Much." Her pride and joy in life was her family and pets, all of whom she spoiled dearly.
She deeply loved her family and had a very special attachment to animals. An avid bird watcher, she enjoyed good health, reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, decorating her home and bingo.
She particularly relished holidays and celebrations, stopping at nothing to make them fun and festive. Betty had a gift for making people feel at home and taught us all to enjoy each day to the fullest and never to stop showing kindness to others. She had a deep pride in her Scottish heritage.
married to the love of her life, Don, for 44 years, they loved the simple joys in life and based their love on a deep faith in the Lord. A best friend to her children, Sheila and Tracy, her compassion and fun, feisty spirit will always remain with us.
Betty is survived by her husband, Don; one daughter, Sheila Gust; one son, Tracy, all of Mandan; two sisters, Judy Larson, Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Ilene Norgart, International Falls; one brother, Gordon Friesen, Bemidji, Minn.; many nieces and nephews and many good friends.

CENTER -- Henry E. Cordes, 80, Center, died April 4, 1999, in the Bismarck hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Center, with the Rev. Jon Erickson officiating. Burial will be in the Hagerott Cemetery, Center.
Visitation will be at the church from 1 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until the time of services on Thursday.
Henry is survived by his wife, Dora, Center; one daughter, Eilene Nolen, Port Neches, Texas; and one son, D.H. Cordes, M.D., Tucson, Ariz.

Vern Hoggarth
KENSAL -- Vern W. Hoggarth, 87, Kensal, died April 5, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. John's Catholic Church, Kensal, with the Revs. Al Bitz, John Moore and Emmanuel M. Okonmah officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, and 7-9 p.m. at the church. A vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Vern was born on July 5, 1911, in McKinley Tonwship near Kensal, the son of Thomas and Amanda (Timm) Hoggarth. He received his education near Kensal. He married Gertrude Almeda McDaniel on April 9, 1932; they made their home on a farm in Kensal. He farmed from 1932 to 1942 near Kensal. Gertrude passed away in 1941. In 1942, he started farming near Glenfield, where he continued to farm until his retirement. He married Irene E. Kramer on April 16, 1942 in Kensal. She passed away on March 28, 1994.
Vern served on the Eastman Township Board, was a member of the rural fire department in Kensal, and was a member of the National Farmers Organization.
He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Kensal. He was an avid card player and was a member of the Kensal Card Club and loved farming.
Vern is survived by 11 children, DeVerne and Margaret, Valley City, Darwin and Shirley, Eloise and Kyle Klose, and Fay and David Falk, all of Jamestown, Cleon, and Roger and Diane, all of Bismarck; Russell and Eileen, Wimbledon, Odis, Watertown, S.D., Ramona and Robert Pederson, Monticello, Minn., Clinton and Angela, LaMoure, and Vernon and Renae, Mandan; 32 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, two brothers, Pearl and Ben, and one sister, Gertrude.

Olive Mattheis
Olive Mattheis, 59, Auburn, Wash., died in her sleep on April 4, 1999, at her home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Bismarck Baptist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Don Burnett officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Venturia Baptist Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Boelter Funeral Home, and for one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born July 25, 1939, in Venturia, the daughter of Henry and Martha (Diede) Delzer. She was raised and educated in Venturia and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1957.
Olive married Albin Mattheis on May 6, 1961, in Bismarck. In 1967, they moved to Auburn, Wash., where she worked as a retail clerk for many years.
She was a member of the Bismarck Baptist Church and enjoyed family genealogy and crafts.
Olive is survived by her husband, Albin; one son, Ken Mattheis, Sumner, Wash.; three grandchildren, Andrew, Beau and Molly Mattheis; one brother, Leo Delzer, Bismarck; four sisters, Pauline Delzer, Irene Perman, Mabel Delzer and Bernice Delzer, all of Bismarck. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)
