Theresa Glines
Services for Theresa Rose Glines, 73, McIntosh, S.D., will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, McIntosh, with burial in the church cemetery. She died Aug. 19, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital.

Emily Hertz
CARSON -- Emily ReeAnn Hertz, infant daughter of Reed and Ann Hertz, Carson, died Aug. 19, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital, while her father held her.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at Church of St. Theresa, Carson, with the Rev. Kenneth G. Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Carson Community Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the church one hour before services.
Emily Reeann was born June 19, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. She was baptized and confirmed the same day by the Rev. Kenneth Phillips. Emily's short life was filled with struggles, surgeries and setbacks; but most of all, with love, tenderness, caring and smiles, not only from her family but from the gifted and truly wonderful doctors, nurses and staff in NICU. Emily warmed many hearts with her bright eyes, dark hair, strong jaw and double chin. She will be missed by everyone who was in contact with her.
Emily was called home to heaven to become a saint and pray for all those that loved and cared for her.
She is survived by her parents, Reed and Ann Marie Hertz; one brother, Daniel, age 7; two sisters, Bernae, age 3, and Riley J., age 2; her grandparents, Virgil and Patsy Hertz, Carson, and Bernard and Shirley Nicolai, Milnor; her great-grandmothers, Marie Hertz, Carson, Marie Lock, Forman, and Helen LeBeau, Mobridge, S.D.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Emily was preceded in death by one brother, Andrew Paul.

Shirley Roth
HEBRON -- Shirley Lucille Roth, 78, Hebron, died Aug. 19, 1997, in Glen Ullin. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Friday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Hebron, with burial in Congregational Cemetery, Hebron.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, where a prayer service will begin at 7 tonight.
Shirley Christensen was born Sept. 6, 1918, at Raleigh, to Peter and Connie (Andersen) Christensen. She was raised and educated in the Raleigh area. She helped out on the farm until her marriage to Denny Olin in October 1936. They farmed in the Carson area. On Nov. 9, 1967, she married Robert Roth at Mandan. They made their home in Hebron. Robert died Oct. 23, 1992. Shirley continued to reside in Hebron until entering the Marian Manor Nursing Home, July 31, 1997.
She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Hebron.
She is survived by three sons, Dean Olin, Hebron, Danny Olin, Newport, Wash., and David Olin, Roseburg, Ore.; four daughters, Donna Rau, Hebron, Darla Schmidt, Hebron, Darlene Cox, Roseburg, and Debbie Woods, Aberdeen, Wash.; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dan, Lark, and Art, Hebron; and two sisters, Dorothy Moser and Pearl McDowall, both of Bismarck.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Clyde.
Earl Suverly
HEBRON -- Earl Suverly, 78, Hebron, died Aug. 20, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Glencoe Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Earl was born Sept. 9, 1918, at Livona Station in Emmons County, to Sherman S. and Eleanor (Clark) Suverly. He worked at various jobs including Occident Elevator, and in 1967, was injured and disabled working at the Wachter Warehouse.
He loved his family and enjoyed hunting and driving country roads. He married Betty Jean Cherrey, May 14, 1960, in Bismarck.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; one daughter, Earlean, Hebron; two stepdaughters, Jean and Mary Ann; two stepsons, Gordon and Larry; one aunt, Gladys Clark; 12 nieces and nephews, Lenora Pederson, Lorraine Chyles, Donald Schultz, Judy Stein, Joe Fogarty, Ruth Snyder, Violet Clooten, Harriet Schantz, Clarence Burtts, Jean Knowlen, Bill Burtts and Judy Bailey; and a good friend, John Lennick.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and nine brothers and sisters.
Earl was a kind, gentle man, helpful to all, who will be missed by his family and friends.
Joan Kemnitz
Joan Kemnitz, 72, Steele, died Aug. 19, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of St. Frances de Sales, Steele, with the Rev. Thomas Krupich officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Steele.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.
Joan Katherine Hess was born Feb. 6, 1925, in Sentinel Butte, the daughter of Leonard and Katherine (Fleegel) Hess. The family moved to the Dawson/Steele area. Joan married Milo Kemnitz, July 31, 1943. They lived in Steele. Milo preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1984. Joan worked at Kidder County Courthouse for 41 years in the auditor's office, and later as director of tax equilization.
She was a member of Church of St. Frances de Sales, St. Mary's Altar Society and a very active member of the local historical society.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milo; her brother, Jerome Hess; and her sister, Viola Martin.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Larry Lyson, Bismarck; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Karen, Mandan, David and Paula, Steele, and William and Marlyce, Steele; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her sister, Angeline Sidari, Albion, N.Y.
Joan loved and enjoyed her family and friends. She especially enjoyed her home and yard, with the flowers, trees and birds. She loved and lived life with a firm belief in God.
Emily Hertz

Joe Byram
WILLISTON -- Joe Byram, 83, Williston, died Aug. 18, 1997, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Everson Funeral Home, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.
He is survived by his wife, Ella Mae; one son, Joe Jr., Grand Forks; two brothers, Jim, Colorado Springs, Colo., and George, Miami, Okla.; and two sisters, Hazel Hammon, Marlow, Okla., and Judy Hazlewood, Menlo Park, Calif.
Mary Holty
Word was received of the death of a former Mandan resident, Mary Block Holty, 79. She died Aug. 17, 1997, in a California hospital after a long illness. A memorial service will be held in Palmdale.
Mary was born Oct. 11, 1917, in Mandan, to Emil W. and Minnie (Yunck) Block. She attended Mandan schools and graduated from Mandan High School in 1936. She attended nursing school in Montana and later served several years as a nurse in the County Hospital in Bagley, Minn. She married Walter Holty there in 1943, when he was home on leave from the Naval Air Force during World War II. After his discharge from the service, they lived in Bagley, Barnesville, Waldorf and Grand Maraia, Minn., where Walt taught school. In 1958 they moved to California where they spent the greater part of their life together with their family in Simi Valley. More recently, Mary lived with her son and family in Palmdale as an invalid, having suffered a severe stroke.
She leaves to mourn her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Daniel Scolpini, Santa Clarita, Calif.; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Phyllis Holty; four grandsons, Dan and Jason Scolpini, and Brian and Scott Holty; and many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; her daughter, Catherine ``Kitty;" and her brother, William C. Block.
Walter Sand
DICKINSON -- Walter Sand, 59, Dickinson, died Aug. 18, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; one daughter, Tammy Luptak, Denver; one son, Tim, Denver; two sisters, Rose Pflepsen and Dorothy Dworshak, both of Dickinson; and 10 brothers, Herman, Washington, Lester, Michigan, Tony, Montana, Edward, Texas, Gene, Jamestown, Leo, South Heart, Kenneth, Richard and Raymond, all of Dickinson, and Joe, Belfield. Patricia Haseltine
Patricia Kay Haseltine, 52, Torrance, Calif., formerly of Mandan, died Aug. 18, 1997, in Fargo. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Mark A. Bayert officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight and until service time Thursday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.
Patricia Kay Haseltine was born July 17, 1945, in Mandan, the daughter of Erwin and Helen (Kolberg) Haseltine. She attended school in Mandan, graduating from Mandan High School in 1963. While in high school she was a member of Student Senate, Quill and Scroll (an honors club for journalism students) and the National Honor Society. She played clarinet in the band and marching band. She also participated in speech and debate and was co-editor of the high school yearbook. During this time she was also a lifeguard for four years and taught swimming. She was also involved with the Girl Scouts throughout her youth and assisted in operating the Girl Scout Camp.
After high school graduation, Pat attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, graduating in 1967 with a PhB, bachelor of philosophy with an emphasis in mathematics and history, and a teaching certificate. While at UND she was involved in the Student Senate and was on the speech and debate teams. She was also a resident's assistant at Beck Hall for three years. She then moved to Racine, Wis., where she taught junior high school math from 1967-1970. During the summer of 1968 she traveled in Europe for six weeks. In 1970 she moved to San Diego to attend graduate school at San Diego State University where she obtained her masters degree in MATE (Math with a Teaching Emphasis) in 1972. Prior to completing her graduate degree, she moved to the Chicago area where she worked for a publishing company during the fall semester of 1971. In the spring of 1972 she began teaching high school in Arlington Heights, Ill., and lived in nearby Palatine. She taught math and computer science at Arlington Heights High until the school closed in 1984. During her tenure there, Pat was the cheer leading adviser as well as the National Honor Society adviser. During the fall of 1984 she began a one-year sabbatical by attending Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore. She remained there for one year and studied computer science, including artificial intelligence. She returned to the Chicago area in 1985 and taught math and computer science for one year at Buffalo Grove High School.
In 1986 she moved to Torrance and began teaching at El Camino College in Torrance. She was a professor in the mathematics and computer science departments until 1997. While at El Camino, she was elected to the Faculty Senate, serving for seven years, including election as vice president of staff development.
Pat's hobbies included reading, computers, cross stitch, toll painting, traveling and playing with her cats. She also liked country music and collecting art work.
Pat is survived by her parents, Erwin and Helen Haseltine, Mandan; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Stacy, Bismarck, and Robert and Beth, Fargo; and one niece, Bailey Haseltine, Fargo.
The family prefers memorials to Hospice of the Red River Valley, or the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center, both of Fargo.
Ruth Neutman
Ruth Neutman, 76, Osnabrock, died Aug. 18, 1997, in the Langdon hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and will continue until service time Saturday.
Ruth Guerin was born Aug. 29, 1920, in Owens County, Ind., the daughter of William and Georgia (Hawkins) Guerin. Ruth was raised and educated in Indiana and North Dakota. She married Charles E. Neutman, July 23, 1940, in Bismarck. Ruth worked for Capital Laundry, Eddy's Bakery and Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, all of Bismarck.
She is survived by her husband, Charles; two sons and daughters-in-law, Francis and Joann, and Charles L. and Nancy, all of Mandan; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Lois and Thomas McKenny, Kenansville, Fla., Jackie Hecker, Lincoln, Cheryl Neutman, Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Beth and Allen Bohara, Osnabrock; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert, Marion, Ind.; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Martha and Andy Kraft, Bismarck, and Mabel Scheidt, Sims, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter; three sisters; and two brothers.
Leonard Schmidt
Leonard L. Schmidt, 74, Upland, Calif., died Aug. 17, 1997, in his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Madeline's Catholic Church, Pomona, Calif., with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Leonard was born Sept. 28, 1922, in Huff. He served as a Yeoman Second Class in the U.S. Navy for four years. He owned the Stockman and Buckhorn Bars in Mandan, and built the first bowling alley, Ten Spot Lanes, in Mandan. He moved to Upland in 1964 and managed the Pom Lanes in Pomona for a time. He franchised the Stop & Go Store in Montclair, Calif. for 15 years before buying it in 1980, when he named it Len's Market. He sold it and retired three years later. He went back to work in 1984 as manager of the U-Store-M in Pomona for 13 years.
He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Loyal Order of the Moose, American Legion and St. Anthony Verein, all of Mandan.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; three sons, Frank, Blaine, Minn., Patrick, Upland, and Lenny, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; four daughters, Gail Andrade, Alta Loma, Calif., Gladnie Bender, Upland, Lori Rucker, Ontario, Calif., and Dee Clark, Upland; one sister, Dorothy Goertel, St. Anthony; one brother, Joseph, Portland, Ore.; eight grandsons; five granddaughters; one great-grandson; and a special friend, Jim ``Teach" Dineen, Claremont, Calif.

Alvina Eliason
Alvina Eliason, 81, 207 N. 13th St., died Aug. 17, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and will continue Friday until time of services.
Alvina Stolz was born April 22, 1916, in Washburn, the daughter of John and Barbara (Schatz) Stolz. She was raised and attended school near Baldwin. Alvina married Robert Eliason, Sept. 30, 1935, in Bismarck. They farmed first on the home farm, and in 1946, moved two miles north to start their own farm. They retired in 1970 and moved into Bismarck. Mr. Eliason died Sept. 3, 1986.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Violet, Bismarck; three grandchildren, Tim, Allan and Josh; one sister, Freda Dockter, Bismarck; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Harold and Pauline Gietzen and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one grandson, David; one infant son; four sisters; and six brothers.
John Hickey
BELFIELD -- John E. Hickey, 56, Belfield, died June 8, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. MDT Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Belfield.
He is survived by two brothers, James, Great Falls, Mont.; and Joel, Trenton, Mo.; and four sisters, Judith Hancock, Merrillan, Wis.; Janice Hlebechuk, Phoenix; and Joan and Jean Hickey, both of Belfield. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)
