Mildred Benesh
Mildred J. Benesh was born March 26, 1908, in Chicago, to Sadie and Emil Benesh. The family moved to Mott in 1909, where she was raised and graduated with the Mott High School class of 1928. It was in Mott that she developed the love of nature that stayed with her throughout her life.
She moved to Bismarck with her family in 1928 and attended business school. Mildred was a career woman before her time. She began her career as a legal secretary to George Register, and later moved to North Dakota Guarantee and Title, which she managed for many years. She enjoyed her work immensely, both in the office and the opportunities for travel that it supplied. Feisty to the end, she adapted well to life in a man's world.
Minnie was a well-read woman and surrounded herself with books and mementos of her travels. Her pet dogs and cats were very much a part of her life, and she gave several a very good home. She spent much time at her cabin in the woods just past River Road, and her family and friends were treated to many picnics and gatherings there. Her involvement in Business and Professional Women, Legal Secretaries Association and the Title Association played an important role in her life. In her later years, her health made it impossible to go beyond the boundaries of her family home at 810 N. First St. Good friends and neighbors cared for her there for many years before it became necessary for her to move to the Elmcrest Manor Nursing Home in New Salem. She died there July 7, 1997.
