Rev. Walter Klempel
The Rev. Walter Klempel, 84, 1120 N. 12th Street No. 7, Bismarck, died Oct. 10, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Century Baptist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Willis Potratz and John Binder officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church. Due to health problems, family would request that people refrain from using perfumes or fragrances at both visitation and funeral service.

Walter was born June 17, 1913, in Fessenden, the son of Hugo and Mary (Nollmeyer) Klempel at the home of his maternal grandparents. His parents homesteaded in eastern Montana and he spent many years herding sheep for his father.

He attended country school for his elementary years and graduated from Northwestern Bible College and Seminary and North American Baptist Seminary. He received his B.A. from the University of Nebraska in 1948. Later, Walter took courses in Spearfish, S.D., and received a teaching certificate. Walter was ordained as a minister in 1946.

He married Eunice Prang in Creston, Neb., June 16, 1947. He pastored churches in Nebraska and South Dakota. He retired from the ministry when health problems affected his voice, but remained active in Christian work. After leaving the ministry, he farmed and ranched in eastern Montana, until retiring in 1986. During this time, they made their home in Dickinson. In 1990, they moved to Bismarck.

His special interests were his children and grandchildren, upholding them with prayer and love.

He is survived by his wife, Eunice; one son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Kathleen, Bismarck; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Marilyn and Herman Kesterke, and Phyllis Heyne, all of Bismarck, Rhoda and Tim Geselle, Newbury Park, Calif., and Lynette and Brian Haller, Three Hills, Alberta, Canada; 12 grandchildren, Shane Kesterke and his wife Mischael, Kari Bitz and her husband Gavin, Patrick, Carissa, and Alexis Klempel, Corby, Joseph, Chris, Cliff, and Justin Heyne, Wendy Geselle, and Levi Haller; one great-grandson, Caleb Kesterke; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Alice and Kenneth Clyde, Sandpoint, Idaho, and Ruth Lepel, Culbertson, Mont.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Gus, Sidney, Mont., and David and Vanda, Plains, Mont.; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Elsie.

Sophia Schutt
Sophia B. Schutt, 88, Oregon City, Ore., formerly of Beulah, died Oct. 8, 1997, in Portland, Ore. Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Beulah, with the Rev. James Reardon officiating. Burial will be in Beulah City Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before services, at the church.

Sophia was born Oct. 17, 1908, in Beulah, the daughter of Christ and Anna (Goldade) Skalsky. She was raised and educated in the Beulah area. She married Michael M. Schutt in 1928, and they farmed south of Beulah until 1969, when they moved into Beulah. After Michael died in April of 1984, Sophia moved to Oregon City.

She was a charter member of Beulah Eagles Club.

She is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, John and Gloria, and Steve and Peggy, all of Ridgefield, Wash., and Geraldine, Lacenter, Wash.; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Helen Weiand, Mandan, Loretta Spiering, Ridgefield, Veronica and Edwin Kohler, Milwaukie, Ore., and Annie and Gilbert Newberger, Oregon City; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great great-granddaughters; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Agatha and John Gress, Missoula, Mont., and Thresia and Walter Getizen, and Annie and Cletus Wehri, all of Glen Ullin; and four brothers and sisters-in-law, Steve and Emma, Stevensville, Mont., Clemens and Gladys, Glendive, Mont., Paul and Marlene, Sidney, Mont., and Leo and Lucille, Beulah.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Michael; one son, Jake; two sons-in-law, Leanard Weiand and Richard Weiand; two sisters, Jenny Papp and Veronica Sebastian; and two brothers, Pete and John Skalsky. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

John Berger
NEW SALEM -- John E. Berger, 91, New Salem, died Oct. 9, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Feeney officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, and will continue one hour prior to services, all at the funeral home.

John was born Oct. 23, 1905, in Morton County. He married Anna Miller on Nov. 14, 1933. They were married 63 years. John and Anna lived their entire lives in the Bismarck-Mandan area. He was well-known for his mild manners and his gentle way with people.

He is survived by his wife, Anna; one daughter, Alice Bender and her fiance, Greg Boehm, both of California; one granddaughter and spouse, Lenice and Phil Jessen, Bismarck; one sister, Mary Heck, Bismarck; and one brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Frances Berger, Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and two brothers.

Rachel Dockter
ASHLEY -- Rachel Dockter, 61, Ashley, died Oct. 11, 1997, in the Wishek nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Reformed Church, Ashley. Further arrangements are pending with Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley.

Bertha Hust
JAMESTOWN -- Bertha Hust, 74, Jamestown, died Oct. 11, 1997, in a Jamestown nursing home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Concordia Lutheran Church, Jamestown. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown.

She is survived by one sister, Emma Hust, Jamestown. (Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown)

Ole Bundy
MADDOCK -- Ole E. Bundy, 98, Maddock, died Oct. 10, 1997, in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Brethren Church, Maddock. Burial will be in Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, rural Esmond.

He is survived by one son, R. Dennis, Beulah; and one daughter, Eunice Ellingson, Westminster, Calif. (Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock)

Hattie Daniel
SYKESTON -- Hattie Daniel, 100, Bismarck, died Oct. 15, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Sykeston. Further arrangements are pending at Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden.

Art Rafferty
LEMMON, S.D. -- Art Rafferty, 79, Lemmon, died Oct. 14, 1997, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Reformed Presbyterian Church, Lemmon, with burial in Black Hills National Cemetery, rural Sturgis.

He is survived by his wife, Leona; one son, Dean, Edina, Minn.; and one son, Jim, St. Paul. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Lemmon)

Russ Silha
BOWMAN -- Russ Silha, 73, Bowman, died Oct. 12, 1997, in La Crosse, Wis. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Saturday at St. Charles Catholic Church, Bowman, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Fran; two sons, Randy, La Crosse, and Logan, Bowman; three daughters, Roxie Holecek, Bowman, Nada Carter, Starbuck, Minn., and Myrna Friedt, Carrington; one brother, Vernon, Coon Valley, Wis.; and two sisters, Elsie Whittet, Eugene, Ore., and Lucile Kumm, Coon Valley. Leo Zimmerman
Leo D. Zimmerman, 63, Lemmon, S.D., died Oct. 11, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at Prince of Peace Chapel of Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Lemmon. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery, near Sturgis, S.D., with full military rites by Sturgis Vets Club.

He is survived by his two sisters, Irene Hughes, Hutchinson, Kan., and Elsie Zimmerman, Van Nyes, Calif.

Hilda Pippin
WILLISTON -- Hilda Pippin, 65, Williston, died Oct. 14, 1997, in a Williston hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at First Lutheran Church, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

She is survived by two daughters, Lesli Fisketjon and Leone Ritter, both from Williston; and one son, Harry, Williston. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Florence Hoffman
Florence T. Hoffman, 88, Bloomington, Minn., formerly of Bismarck, died Oct. 15, 1997, in a Minneapolis nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Joseph Denning Sr.
BELFIELD -- Joseph Denning Sr., 84, Belfield, formerly of Denver, died Oct. 14, 1997, in a Dickinson hospital. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Highland Cemetery, Thornton Colorado.

He is survived by one daughter, Joan Laurent, Fruita, Colo.; three sons, Joseph, Henderson, Nev., Donald, Belfield, and George, Denver; one sister, Virginia Popisch, North Glen, Colo.; and one brother, Tom, Hudson, Colo. (Mischel-Olson Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Ronald Pladsen
NEW ENGLAND -- Ronald Pladsen, 68, New England, died Oct. 14, 1997, at home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Saturday, at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, New England. Further arrangements are pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Polly and Harli Fontenelle
Polly Fontenelle, 24, Kenel, S.D., and her stillborn daughter, Harli Maria, died Oct. 14, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Funeral arrangements are pending at Kesling Funeral Home, Mobridge, S.D.

Eleanor Wilgers
MCMINNVILLE, Ore. -- Eleanor Wilgers, 82, McMinnville, died Oct. 2, 1997, at home. No services were held. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery, McMinnville.

She is survived by one son, John, Echo, Ore., one daughter, Marie Jones, Seal Rock, Ore., and one sister, Roberta Carlisle, Bismarck.

Jerry Irwin
Jerry Eugene Irwin, 56, Baytown, Texas, formerly of Hazen, died Oct. 18, 1997, in an Albuquerque, N.M. hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. MDT today, at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen.

He is survived by one daughter, Danielle, Hazen; his mother, Farmington, N.M., and one brother, John, Hurricane, Utah.

Gordon McAvoy
Gordon W. McAvoy, 82, 1119 S. University Dr. No. 202, died Oct. 23, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck. Burial will be in Baldwin Cemetery, with military rites provided by Bismarck V.F.W. Post No. 1326. There will be no visitation.

Gordon was born Sept. 16, 1915, in Granite Falls, Minn., the son of William James and Pearl (Broughton) McAvoy. He was raised and educated in a country school near Baldwin.

He married Joyce Fischer in 1940 in North Dakota. He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945 as a paratrooper. He served in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatres.

He married Doris Brummond on June 14, 1957, in Bismarck. He worked for various construction companies, Sears and Roebuck, and also for the State of North Dakota as a maintenance engineer. He retired in 1980 from the state.

He was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post No. 1326 and he enjoyed fishing, gardening, and tinkering with lawn mowers.

He is survived by his wife Doris; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Roger, Appleton, Minn., and Howard and Evelyn McAvoy, Pine City, Minn.; two daughters, Maurene McAvoy, Shafer, Minn., and Cheryl Bahr, Anoka, Minn.; two step-sons, James Coleman, Monticello, Iowa, and Douglas Coleman, Bismarck; four step-daughters, and one step-son-in-law, Diane and Clayton Broeckel, Beulah, Susan Eilers, Des Moines, Iowa, Beverly Coleman, Bismarck, and Deborah Jenner, Bismarck; one sister, Erma Noonan, St. Cloud, Minn.; 30 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both parents; one brother; one sister; and two great-granddaughters. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Keith Olin
LEITH -- Keith Olin, 68, Leith, died Oct. 23, 1997 in the Elgin hospital. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. MST Monday, at Sims Lutheran Church, Sims. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

He is survived by his mother, Delia Olin, New Salem; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Gaynell and Toddy Nesheim, New Town, and LoAnn Olin, Santa Rosa, Calif.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Carole, New Salem, and Jack and Velma, Dickinson; and a special friend, Barbara Babel, Carson. George Turnbow
SPEARFISH, S.D. -- George Morris Turnbow, 66, Spearfish, died Oct. 13, 1996, in his home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Carlsen-Jolley Funeral Home, Spearfish, with the Rev. Simon Looking Elk officiating. Burial will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, with military rites by Spearfish American Legion VFW Veterans.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Carlsen-Jolley Funeral Home, Spearfish.

George Morris Turnbow was born April 4, 1930, in Bismarck, to Sam and Lillian (Morris) Turnbow. He served in the Korean War for 16 months, was in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1951 to 1953 and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His travels over the years led him through many states. He finally resided in South Dakota. He spent time farming, as a gold miner at the Homestake Gold Mine and as a drug and alcohol counselor at Glory House in Lead. He was married in 1956 to Donna Robertson of Menoken, N.D., and in 1975 to Andra of Spearfish.

George enjoyed gold panning, spending time in the Black Hills, hunting and tinkering on his cars. He also found great pleasure tending to his yard and walking his beloved dog, Gizmo, through the park.

He is survived by his wife, Andra; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Kevin and Leann, Bismarck, and Daniel Hart, Sioux Falls, S.D.; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Leslie and Randy Moch, Whitewood, S.D., Becky and Tim Volk, Bismarck, Tammy and Jim Bourgois, Baldwin, and Beth Hennon, Greeley, Colo.; one brother and sister-in-law, Bill and June, Bismarck; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Bob Anderson, Bismarck, Margaret and Duane Mack, Bismarck, Eunice and Russell Sabot, Baldwin, and Catherine and Emmanuel Entze, Beulah; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Rosalie.

George was always a kind and thoughtful person, willing to help anybody at anytime. He thoroughly enjoyed being with friends and family and will be greatly missed. To the many people who held and will always hold a special place in his heart, you will always be remembered by his family.

Mary Kirchmeier
Mary C. Kirchmeier, 85, Jackson, Mich., formerly of Bismarck, died Oct. 13, 1996. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dickinson. Services were held Tuesday in Jackson, Mich.

Mary was born Nov. 23, 1910, in Glendive, Mont., the daughter of Frank and Katherine Bodwin. She was raised in Killdeer. She gradauted from Dickinson State Teachers College and taught in Dunn County schools. She worked for MDU in Bismarck until her marriage to William E. Kirchmeier in 1939. She moved from North Dakota in 1965 but maintained a strong pride in and love for her home state.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William Jr. and Ann; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Patrick Bosch and Susan and Harley Henry; five grandchildren, Lisa, William III, Gregory, Melissa and Molly; two great-grandchildren, Wendy and Kyle; and two sisters, Ann Oakrop and Fran Siverts.

Friends are invited to visit the family at the home of Patrick Bosch, 8015 Kittie Lane, Bismarck, at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Joan Kressly
LEMMON, S.D. -- Joan Kressly, 61, Lemmon, died Oct. 13, 1996, in the Lemmon hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. MDT Thursday at Calvary Lutheran Church, Lemmon, with burial in Greenhill Cemetery, Lemmon.

She is survived by four daughters, Debra Archer, Gillette, Wyo., Karen Lisser, LaPalma, Calif., and Ginger Olson, St. Onge, S.D., and Kathy Zorc, Lemmon; one brother, Jimmy Fields, West Minster, Colo.; and two sisters, Joyce Kirley, Rapid City, and Jane Rilling, Killeen, Texas.
