Murril Chase
HAZEN -- Murril Stetson Chase, 96, Hazen, died May 12, 1998, in the Hazen hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT today at Salem United Methodist Church, Hazen, with the Rev. Rick Loewen officiating. Burial will be in Hazen Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Delton Schwarz, Kendall Miller, Steve Chase, Michael Chase, Nick Chase, Cole Chase and R.E. Chase.

Murril was born Nov. 12, 1901, at Alta, Iowa, a daughter of Ernest L. and Beatrice "Bessie" (Morrical) Stetson. She moved with her parents to a farm 6 miles south of Hazen as a child. On Dec. 21, 1919, she married Ralph Chase at Mora, Minn. After their marriage, they lived in Hazen before moving to Minneapolis. Later, they returnedto Hazen, where Mr. Chase was a building contractor. He died in 1963. Murril was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Hazen.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Geraldine, Bismarck, and Jerald, Hazen; one daughter, Mildred Richter, Hazen; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Earl (Bette) Chase, Washburn, and Mrs. Ralph (Delores) Chase, Hazen; one sister, Pearl Holoch, Portland, Ore.; 16 grandchildren, Earlann Archer, Fargo, Candice Cook, Mohall, Michael Chase, Hazen, Cole Chase, Las Vegas, Priscilla Schwarz, Minot, Steven Chase, Bismarck, Melanie Sims, Riverton, Wyo., Susan Devine, Bismarck, Cynthia Preus, Plymouth, Minn., Kaaren White, Las Cruces, N.M., Ralph Chase III, Sacramento, Calif., Nicholas Chase, Fargo, Jodee Schwarz, Hazen, Jes Chase, Seattle, Judith Miller, Hazen, and Marjie McLaughlin, Hazen; 32 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Murril was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph; two sons, Earl and Ralph Jr. "Bob;" one daughter-in-law, Anne Chase; one son-in-law, Elmer J. Richter; five brothers, Harold, Cole, Orie, Sam and Forrest; one sister, Mabel Bieloh; and one great-granddaughter.

Donald Baker
REEDER -- Donald E. Baker, 80, Reeder, died May 12, 1998, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Saturday, at Reeder Congregational Church, with the Rev. Scott Mendez-Andrews officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Reeder.

A family service will be held at 11:30 a.m. MDT Saturday, at the church in Reeder.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. MDT today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger, and from noon-2 p.m. MDT Saturday, at the church in Reeder.

Special music will be provided by Carol Jacobs, Twilla Honeyman and Sharon Soehren. Serving as casketbearers will be Ryan Dacar, David Munro, Todd Larson, Troy Manolovits, Dan Baker, Mike Kavadas, Jeff Munro, David Finn, Jay Wolf, Larry Bay and Steve Finn. Honorary casketbearers will be Sheri Bay, Robyn Wolf, Melanie Kavadas, Kimberly Manolovits, Tami Ferguson, Kelly Larson and Erin Larson.

Donald Elliott Baker was born on Aug. 29, 1917 at Sorum, S.D. to Harlow and Hazel (Elliott) Baker. He attended country schools with the Class of 1936. He married Helen Roberts on Aug. 4, 1941 at Baker, Mont. They lived a short time in Reeder before moving to Sorum, where he was engaged in farming until 1947. They then moved their family back to Reeder where Don was employed as a Star Route Mail Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and managed the Legion Theatre and Dance Hall. He then moved on to work for Cenex for 25 years. He retired in January of 1984, to enjoy his woodwork projects, and his flower and vegetable garden.

He was a member of Prairie Pioneer Senior Citizens, Reeder Lions Club, and sang with the Happy Wanderers for many functions.

He will be best remembered for his love of music, witty sense of humor, and his love and adoration for all of his family. Anyone that met him knew he was a kind, caring and giving man. He will be greatly missed by his numerous friends and family.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Helen; three sons and daughters-in-law, William "Bill" and Karen, Sumner, Wash., Ronald and Janet, Bismarck, and Chuck and Geri Munro, Fargo; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Marvin Dacar, Bismarck, and Diane and Glenn Larson, Grand Junction, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bernice Knapp, Gold Canyon, Ariz., Alice Sherwood, Spearfish, S.D., and Leona Fox, Belle Fourche, S.D.; and two brothers, Robert Frandsen, Reeder, and Raymond Frandsen, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helen Jensen; and two brothers, Harry and Carl.

Raymond Renz
Raymond D. "Ray" Renz, 53, St. Vincents Care Center, Bismarck, died May 14, 1998, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jim Shannon officiating. Burial will be in Moffit Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday, both at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Raymond was born on Oct. 20, 1944 in Bismarck, the son of Ernest and Mable (Jensen) Renz. He was raised in the Moffit area and went to high school in Hazelton. While in high school, he played guitar and sang with his first band, "Ray & the Ravens." After graduation, they recorded a commercial for Evan's Mens Shop and played at Grandma's Club in Billings, Mont. In 1963, he went to work for a construction company building the Grant Marsh Bridge near Bismarck. When the bridge was completed, he went to work at Twilight Hills, a ski resort south of Bismarck. After that closed, he came back to the farm to work.

The bands he played with were "Trac," "The Pacifics," and "Trinity." While playing with the band "Trac," he toured for several months through Wisconsin and Nebraska. When he played with "The Pacifics" he played organ and sang. They played mostly nightclubs. The band "Trinity" played for dances for several years.

In 1975, he bought a truck stack mover and moved back to the farm. He went into partnership with his brothers, Robert and Darold, in 1981 on the farm. He continued to move hay and farm until 1994, when his diabetes got too bad and he had to retire. He lived in his home in Moffit until December 1995, when he had to move into a basic care facility. He entered St. Vincent's Care Facility in August of 1997.

He enjoyed helping people whenever he could and loved playing in the band and hauling hay. He enjoyed his nieces and nephews, and being with his family.

Survivors include his father, Ernest; his stepmother, Bertha; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Robert and Patsy Renz, Darold and Debbie Renz, and Douglas Renz, all of Moffit, and Gordon and Betty Renz, Mandan; two nieces, Lenore Mulligan, Monrovia, Calif., and Kristen Renz, Moffit; two nephews, Jeff and Derek Renz, both of Mandan; and one great-niece, Meghan Mulligan, Monrovia, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mable, in 1976, and one brother, Kevin, in 1962. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Lucille Sheldon
Lucille E. Sheldon, 87, Everett, Wash., and formerly of Bismarck, died May 11, 1998, in Everett, where she had resided for the past six years. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. James Lauerman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. to service time, both at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon. A rosary service will be said at 7 p.m. tonight at Dahlstrom Funeral Home.

Lucille was born on July 9, 1910 at Towner, the daughter of Oliver and Nora Erickson. She taught school in rural areas near Beach and Napoleon. Lucille married James L. Sheldon on Nov. 8, 1936. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Napoleon until 1954, before moving to Steele, and then to Bismarck. She resided in Bismarck until 1990, when she moved to Everett, Wash. to be near her daughters.

Lucille was a Past Grand Regent of Catholic Daughters and spent many years volunteering at St. Alexius Medical Center for meals on wheels and the hospital gift shop.

She is survived by three daughters, Rosemary Rognstead, Kay Callahan and Jean Aarvig, all of the Seattle, Wash. area; two sons, James, Wichita, Kan., and Richard, Beulah; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1974; her parents; and her siblings.

Phyllis Siefken
DICKINSON -- Phyllis L. Siefken, 73, Dickinson, died May 13, 1998, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Saturday, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Dickinson. Burial will be at 9 a.m. CDT Monday at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; three daughters, Fern Earley, Waco, Texas, Judy Tople, Aberdeen S.D., and Starla Rae Huschka, Dickinson; four sons, Robert J., Terry and Jerry, all of Dickinson, and Ricky J., Simi Valley, Calif.; four sisters, Dorothy Christiansen, Casper, Wyo., and Gladys Shillingstad, Virginia Husted, and Jean Saunders, all of Rapid City, S.D.; and two brothers, Rodney Reel, Sheridan, Wyo., and Damon Reel, Rapid City. Kathryn Homes
CARRINGTON -- Kathryn L. Homes, 54, Carrington, died May 13, 1998, in the Carrington hospital, after a hard battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at Federated Church, Carrington. Burial will be in Carrington Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Stephen; one son, Stephen, Jamestown; one daughter, Karmen Sandberg, Bismarck; her mother, Ruby Walkup, Fergus Falls, Minn.; two sisters, Connie Peterson, Fergus Falls, and Mary Salter, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and five brothers, John Walkup, Aitkin, Minn., Ralph, Peter and Bruce Walkup, all of Fergus Falls, and William Walkup, Dilworth, Minn. Ingeborg Bratold
BOWMAN -- Ingeborg Bratvold, 88, Bowman, died May 13, 1998 in a Billings hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bowman Lutheran Church, Bowman. Burial will be in Bowman Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, Tore, Lisbon, and George, Alburquerque, N.M.; and three daughters, Ingrid Worthington, Everette, Wash., Ruth Griffith, Miles City, Mont., and Robert Kreige, Bowman. (Krebsbach Funeral Service, Bowman)

Sarah Mattern
Sarah B. Mattern, 69, Bismarck, formerly of Sherwood, died May 13, 1998, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Sherwood.

She is survived by five sons, Steven, Corona, Calif., Michael and Greg, both of Minneapolis, Paul, South Belmar, N.J., and Jeff, Bismarck. (Anderson/Nelson Funeral Home, Mohall)

Helen Ferris
FARGO -- Helen Ferris, 82, Fargo, formerly of BIsmarck, died May 14, 1998, in Fargo. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck. Further arrangments are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Magdaline Hecker
DICKINSON -- Magdaline Hecker, 80, Dickinson, died May 12, 1998, in a Dickinson nursing home. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday, at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Dickinson. Further arrangments are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Valborg Fisher
Valborg P. Fisher, 90, Mandan, died May 14, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at First Lutheran Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending with Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Delores Loh
REGENT -- Mass of Christian Burial for Delores Loh, 66, Regent, will be at 10 a.m. MDT today at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Regent, with the Revs. Patrick Schumacher, Dennis Schafer and Bruce Krebs officiating. Burial will be in St. Henry's Cemetery.

Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at church.

Serving as casketbearers will be her nieces and nephews with all other relatives and friends considered honorary bearers. Special music will be provided by Kathleen Woiwode; organist, St. Henry's Church Choir; and special selections by her son Marcel and daughter Susan.

Mrs. Loh died early Friday morning, May 15, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Mott, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Delores Loh was born Aug. 8, 1931, to Frank J. and Marian (Kilzer) Gion at their farmhouse northeast of Regent. She attended Cherry Butte rural school and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Richardton with the class of 1949. After graduation she started a banking career which spanned 37 years.

She was married to Don Loh on June 30, 1953 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, rural Regent. They lived in Regent and Mott since that time.

She worked first for the First State Bank of Regent and then at the Commercial Bank of Mott until retiring in December of 1995. She worked as a teller, in the accounting department and computer operator as well as clerking many auction sales with her husband.

Dee particularly enjoyed music, singing with St. Henry's Choir for over 40 years. She and Don also sang for many weddings, anniversaries, special occasions and funerals. She was a member of the German Hungarian Lodge and St. Henry's Guild. Dee enjoyed her collection of trinkets and collectibles.

A memorial has been established to Good Samaritan Nursing Center for the establishment of a Resident Hospice Support Service program for the area.

Grateful for sharing her life are her husband, Don; son, Marcel and wife Jane of Kennewick, Wash.; daughter, Susan and her husband, Steve Champa, Port Washington, Wash.; six grandchildren, Ashley and Aaron Loh, Mark, Luke, Beth and Sam Champa; her brother, James and his wife Marie Gion, Regent; sister, Lorraine and her husband Joe Loh, Manning; and sister-in-law, Kathleen Gion, Regent.

Preceding her in death were her son, Loren; her parents; and one brother, Herman. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott)

Kenneth Burghart
Kenneth James Burghart, 64, Mandan, died May 17, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital of natural causes. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with full military rites provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck, where a vigil service will be held at 7 tonight. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Kenneth was born on Aug. 20, 1933, in Mott, the son of Peter and Katherine (Motts) Burghart. He was raised and educated in Mott. Ken retired in 1988 from American Freight, where he was a truck driver for 20 years. Prior to trucking, Ken farmed in various places.

He was an avid gardener and enjoyed helping his sons out on the farm. Ken also enjoyed coffee with friends and spending time with his grandchildren.

Ken is survived by his five children, three sons and one daughter-in-law, Jim Burghart and Kelly Burghart, both of Mandan, and Joe and Tammy Burghart, Bismarck; two daughters, Kathy Burghart and Amanda Burghart, both of Bismarck; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Elmer and Arlene Burghart, McClusky, and Albert Burghart, Bismarck; and one sister and brother-in-law, Darlene and Melvin Becker, Bismarck. He was also survived by nine beautiful grandchildren, whom he adored.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Peter and Katherine Burghart; one brother, Pete Burghart; and his oldest daughter, Corrine Burghart. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Elizabeth Balliet
Elizabeth A. "Betty" Balliet, 88, died May 16, 1998, in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Public visitation will begin after 5 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home.

Betty was born on Oct. 4, 1909, in Ashley, the daughter of Frederick and Eva Beglau. She married Henry Balliet on April 14, 1934, and resided in Bismarck until she moved to MedCenter One Care Center in 1989.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Beverly, Bismarck; one sister, Fannie Beglau, Bremerton, Wash.; and one brother, Otto Beglau, El Paso, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Eugene Wiest
Eugene H. Wiest, 74, Herreid, S.D., died May 16, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church, Herreid. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Herreid.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; his mother, Eva Wiest, Herreid; four sons, Karl, Delano, Minn., and Dwight, Grant and John, all of Herreid; three daughters, Eva Wiest, Portland, Ore., Christine Gubbels, Herreid, and Cynthia Hettinger, Sterling, Colo.; and two brothers, Erwin, Aberdeen, S.D., and Clayton, Carlsbad, Calif. Helen Schroeder
Helen Anne Schroeder, 85, Fair Oaks, Calif., formerly of Lefor, died May 15, 1998, in California. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic CHurch, Dickinson.

She is survived by one daughter, Bernadine Chavez, Rancho Cordova, Calif.; three brothers, Marcus Wax, New Endgland, and Adolph and Mike Wax, both of Minneapolis; and five sisters, Barbara Riebel, Mary Weirick, and Florence Butchel, all of St. Paul, Minn., and Kathryn Baar and Eleanor Keck, both of Dickinson. Margaret Smestad
SELFRIDGE -- Margaret Lauinger Smestad, 85, Selfridge, and former owner of the Palace Motel and Restaurant in Selfridge, died May 17, 1998, in a Sarasota, Fla. hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Philomena's Catholic Church, Selfridge.

A family rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at Perry Funeral Home. Further arrangements are pending with Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Clifford Sannan
HARVEY -- Clifford Sannan, 92, rural Harvey, died May 16, 1998, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hoff Lutheran Church, Heimdal. Burial will be in Bethania Lutheran Cemetery, rural Wellsburg.

He is survived by two brothers, Adolph and Edwin, both of Harvey; and one sister, Ella Frank, Long Beach, Calif. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Oleva Steffens
PETTIBONE -- Oleva K. Steffens, 87, Pettibone, died May 15, 1998, in a Jamestown hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Eddy Funeral Home Chapel, Jamestown. Burial will be in Pettibone Cemetery.
