Bertha Fried
Bertha Fried, 80, 2820 Gateway Ave., Bismarck, died Nov. 9, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Our Saviors Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. C. Lindemann officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, at Eastgate Funeral Service, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Bertha Balliet was born on Jan. 23, 1917, in Linton, the daughter of William and Bertha (Schafer) Balliet. She attended rural schools in the Temvik area. On Dec. 27, 1946, she married Alfred Fried. They moved to Hazelton following their marriage, where they raised their family. They then moved to Bismarck in 1988.

Bertha enjoyed flowers and plants, gardening, and spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Gary Milligan, Fargo; one son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Diane, Bismarck; four sisters, Elsie Nelson, Linton, Tillie Grossman, Hazelton, and Martha Balliet and Adeline Reich, both of Bismarck; one brother, Ernest Balliet, Hazelton; and three great-grandchildren, Robby, Skyler and Ariana Fried, all of Fargo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Clara Rooker; and her husband, Alfred in 1996. (Eastgate Funeral Service)

Aletha Hoffer
TURTLE LAKE -- Aletha Hoffer, 85, Turtle Lake, died Jan. 9, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, with the Rev. Norman Paskowsky officiating. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Monday, at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Aletha Kittler was born July 23, 1912, at Turtle Lake, to Benjamin J. and Marie (Kundt) Kittler. She grew up on her parent's farm 12 miles northeast of Turtle Lake, where she attended rural school. As a young girl she worked as a homemaker for area farm wives. When she was 18 years old, she began working as a waitress and later as a cook at Bergo's Cafe and the M & M Cafe at Turtle Lake. She married Edward Hoffer on June 25, 1938, at Lodi, Calif., where they lived for one year. They then moved to Turtle Lake where they made their home. Aletha worked as the head cook at the Turtle Lake Hospital for 10 years. Edward died on Sept. 14, 1987. She continued to make her home in Turtle Lake.

She loved to crochet doilies, angels and snowflakes. She was a member of Turtle Lake American Legion Auxiliary for 52 years, a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she had taught Sunday School, participated in bible study, and also made quilts and baby sweaters for the church mission fields. She was also a longtime member of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Trinity Lutheran.

She is survived by one son, Leo, Mira Loma, Calif.; one grandson, Mike, Athens, Ga.; one nephew, Harry Kittler, Turtle Lake; one niece, Alice Leonard, Minot; four great nieces and nephews; and three great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers; and one sister. (Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake)

Philip Blank
Philip G. Blank, 57, West Yellowstone, Mont., formerly of New Salem, died Jan. 8, 1998, following a courageous, yearlong battle with cancer. He will be long remembered by all who knew him. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today, at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church, West Yellowstone. There will also be a memorial service at St. Pius Catholic Church, New Salem, at 3 p.m. today, with the Rev. David Zimmer officiating.

Those who knew Phil are invited to join the family at his home on Hebgen Lake to celebrate his life, to share stories, love and sustenance, following the service.

Phil was born in New Salem, the son of George and Mae Blank, on July 14, 1940, and grew up there. He was a graduate of New Salem High School and Bozeman, Mont., State University. On Dec. 29, 1960, he married Linda Ellis of Mandan, and moved to the mountains of Montana. He and his wife of 37 years, raised a family and shared with them their love of the outdoors, camping, hunting, fishing and skiing.

Phil pursued a career of agricultural lending with First Bank, the Farm Credit System, Norwest Bank and First Shoshone Bank. He was respected in the business world for his honesty and sincerity. In 1991, he retired from banking and moved to Hebgen Lake to live in the log cabin he built with the help of family and friends.

In his retirement, he enjoyed carpentry, fishing, hunting, guiding, gardening, traveling and spending summers horseback exploring the backcountry.

He is survived by his best friend and wife, Linda (Ellis) Blank; his mother, Mae Blank, New Salem; his daughter and son-in-law, Kris and Mike Opprecht, Seattle, Wash.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Russ and Shelly, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Jeff and special friend, Leann, Portland, Ore.; and grandchildren, Austin, Kadie and Eric.

Fred Voegele
GLEN ULLIN -- Fred K. Voegele, 92, Glen Ullin, died Jan. 9, 1998, in Glen Ullin. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Monday, at Evangelical Congregational Church, Glen Ullin, with the Rev. David Hoffman officiating. Burial will be in Glueckstal Cemetery, rural Glen Ullin.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. MST today, at Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Fred Voegele was born on Oct. 25, 1905, in south Russia, to Jacob and Rose (Kranzler) Voegele. Fred came to the United States with his parents in 1906 and settled north of Glen Ullin. He was raised and educated in rural Glen Ullin. On April 3, 1938, he married Frieda Flemmer at the Glueckstal Church, north of Glen Ullin. Following their marriage, they farmed for two years in Mercer County, and then moved to a farm in the Bluegrass area, which they operated until 1979, when they retired and moved into Glen Ullin. Frieda died on Feb. 21, 1991. Fred moved to the Marian Manor Nursing Home in Glen Ullin in December of 1995, where he has resided since.

He was a former deacon and treasurer of Evangelical Congregational Church.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Vangie, New Salem, and Jerome and Yvonne, Bismarck; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother; and four sisters. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin)

Mavis Klueter
Mavis Jean Bourgois Klueter, 61, Burbank, Calif., and formerly of Bismarck, died Jan. 3, 1998, in Burbank. A memorial service was held in California on Jan. 7, 1998.

Mavis was a 1954 graduate of Bismarck High School. Her most recent position was with Flair Tours in Los Angeles as an executive secretary. Prior to that she was with the Iron and Steel Institute in Washington, D.C. She attended Colorado College, the University of Illinois, Champaign -- Urbana, Katherine Gibbs School in their Administrative Assistant Program, Rockville, Md.; the Washington D.C. School for Secretaries, and the Wang Development Center, Washington. She did a variety of volunteer work, including 4H club work and Girl Scouts. She sewed costumes for theatrical productions, both as a volunteer and as a professional.

She is survived by her children, Daniel and Jenny Klueter, Battle Creek, Mich., Nancy Klueter, Van Nuys, Calif., and Stephen and Anni Klueter, Great Mills, Md.; two grandsons, Nathaniel and Timothy, both of Battle Creek, Mich.; her father, Ervin Bourgois, South Pasadena, Fla.; one brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Lorraine Bourgois; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and Robert Dunnigan, Walhalla, and Sally and Bill Pratt, East Lansing, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy (Thistlewaite) Bourgois, one daughter, Lisa Jean Klueter Reilly; and one brother, David Albert Bourgois, who died in 1965.

Raymond Jacobson
Raymond O. Jacobson, 81, McIntosh, Minn., died Jan. 8, 1998, in a McIntosh nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Faaberg Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie; two sons, Norman, Minot, and Maynard, Mandan; two daughters, Emily Veen, Fargo, and Nancy Jacobson, Fertile, Minn.; three brothers, Joseph, Fertile, Bennet, Twin Valley, Minn., and Norris, Fertile; and one sister, Theresa Folie, Albert Lea, Minn. (Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen, Minn.)

Ella Horst
ELGIN -- Ella Horst, 92, Lodi, Calif., and formerly of Elgin, died Jan. 7, 1998, in Lodi. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. MST, Wednesday, at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Elgin.

She is survived by one daughter, Arila Dunlap, Lodi, Calif.; three sisters, Martha Fischer, Lodi, and Maria Horst and Ottilia Horst, both of Elgin; and one brother, Oscar Kranich, Lodi. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin)

James Miles Jr.
FARGO -- Dr. James V. Miles Jr., 76, Fargo, died Jan. 7, 1998 in a Fargo nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 1998, at First Presbyterian Church, Fargo.

He is survived by one daughter, Julie Vang, Minnetonka, Minn.; and three sons, James III, Birmingham, Ala., John, Fargo, and Scott, Santa Monica, Calif. (Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo)

Wesley Theisen
ASHLEY -- Wesley Theisen, 78, Ashley, died Jan. 8, 1998, in the Ashley hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at St. David's Catholic Church, Ashley. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in St. John's Cemetery, Berlin.

He is survived by one twin brother, Lesley, Jamestown; and one sister, Luella Mahan, Concord, Calif. (Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley)

Herbert Weisser
HARVEY -- Herbert Weisser, 58, Harvey, died Jan. 10, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at First Lutheran Church, Harvey. Further arrangements are pending with Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Norman Myran
TAYLOR -- Norman Myran, 70, Taylor, died Jan. 9, 1998, at his home. Arrangements are pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Helen Peterson
WILLISTON -- Helen C. Peterson, 85, Williston, died Jan. 10, 1998, in a Williston nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Margaret Braun
EDMUNDS -- Margaret Braun, 74, Edmunds, died Jan. 9, 1998, at her home. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Federated Church, Carrington. Burial will be in Edmunds Cemetery.

She is survived by three brothers, Andrew and Robert, both of Jamestown, and Walter, Benton City, Wash.; and nine sisters, Mildred Bata, Bismarck, Eilene Moxness and Elaine Allen, both of Jamestown, Pearl Essig, Shevlin, Minn., Eleanor Schweitzer, St. Ange, S.D., Lillian Thiesen, Bozeman, Mont., Lilly Krogfoss, Great Falls, Mont., Leona Braun, Edmunds, and Anna Lindberg, Litchfield, Minn. (Evans Funeral Home, Carrington)

Raymond Schultz
STEELE -- Raymond Schultz, 75, Steele, died Jan. 10, 1998, at his home. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Steele, with the Rev. Sharon Kapsch officiating.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Steele Chapel. A private family prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Eastgate Steele Chapel.

Ray was born on Aug. 24, 1922, in Logan County, the son of Gottfried and Emma (Becker) Schultz. He married Violet Koehler on Dec. 18, 1944.

Ray worked at various places before purchasing the family farm north of Steele. There they raised their four children.

After selling the farm in 1974, Ray and Violet moved to Steele. He drove the school bus for ten years before completely retiring. Violet passed away in August of 1988.

Ray is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Frank Schneider, Tuttle, and Sylvia and Delbert Thompson, Wheatland, Wyo.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Kathy, Mobridge, S.D., and Victer and Anita, Elgin; nine grandchildren, Valerie Schneider, Brian Schneider and his wife, Jill, Lora Mertz and her husband, Brian, Vicki Schneider and special friend, William Lewis, Ryan Schultz and his wife, Jennifer, Stacy Schultz and his wife, Kathy, Rhonda Berhow and her husband, Nick, Lynn Schultz, and Lisa Schultz; eight great-grandchildren, Ashlee, Elizabeth and Erica Schneider, Brandon Mertz, Kaitlynn and Jake Schultz, Vianna Berhow, and Alyssa Schultz; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Alvin and Edna Schultz, Steele, John Schultz, and Arnold and Daniella Schultz, all of Billings, Mont.; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Florence and Bob Miller, and Polly Lei, all of Billings; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet; his parents; three sisters, Annie Reitler, Mary Lindell, and Alice Angle; and one brother, Harold Schultz. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck and Steele)

Hugh Mandigo
Hugh W. Mandigo, 87, Bismarck, died Jan. 11, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Jeannette Hickman and James Moos officiating. Mr. Mandigo requested his body be donated to the Deeded Body Program at the University of North Dakota.

Hugh was born in Bismarck on April 9, 1910, to Wellington D. and Jessie Mae (Hurlbut) Mandigo. He attended Bismarck schools and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1927.

He worked at the Gussner Grocery Store for a few years and then moved to Oregon in 1936, and was employed in a saw mill. In 1945, he worked for the U.S. Post Office in McMinnville, Ore.

He married Anna Mae Lips in Salem, Ore., on Feb. 18, 1940. They lived in McMinnville until 1970, when they moved to Concord, Calif. Anna Mae was transferred there while working for Montgomery Ward. He also worked for Montgomery Ward for five years and retired in 1975.

After she retired in 1977, they traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada. In 1979, they moved back to Bismarck as all of their families lived there.

Hugh was a 52-year member of the McMinnville Elks Lodge. He also has been a member of the Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, and served as an elder in the McMinnville Church.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Mae; one son and daughter-in-law, Evan and Tove, Bismarck; two grandchildren, James, Bismarck, and Petra, Ripon College in Wisconsin; and two sisters, Anne Peterson, Bismarck, and Melvina Mandigo, Kintyre.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Bruce.

He will be remembered by all who knew and loved him, as a kind and gentle man who never spoke an unkind word about anyone. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Robert Kent
Robert E. Kent, 72, Moorhead, Minn., and formerly of Bismarck and Wahpeton, died Jan. 9, 1998, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church, Moorhead. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton.

He is survived by his wife, A. Lee; one son, Bill, Fargo; and one sister, Beverly Wilson, St. Clair, Mo. (Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo)

Chester Lach
GARRISON -- Chester Lach, 86, Garrison, and formerly of Minot, died Jan. 9, 1998, in the Garrison Hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot. Burial will be in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

He is survived by his wife, Sofia; two sons, George, Minot, and Henry, Bismarck, one daughter, Janina Hanley, Minot; one brother, Mitchell, Warsaw, Poland; and one sister, Henryka Milewski, Warsaw, Poland. (Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot)

Dorothy McCloskey
MINOT -- Dorothy L. McCloskey, 85, Minot, died Jan. 10, 1998, in a Minot hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Congregational Church of Christ, Minot. Further arrangements are pending with Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Richard Stuber
BOWMAN -- Richard L. Stuber, 55, Bowman, died Jan. 9, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. MST Wednesday at Bowman Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Bowman Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Laureen; one daughter, Wendy Stuber, Bowman; one son, Duane, Bowman; and two brothers, Russell, Fargo, and Roger, Bowman. (Krebsbach Funeral Home, Bowman)
