Rita Elery
BILLINGS, Mont. -- Rita M. Elery, 68, Billings, died Sept. 23, 1997, in her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday St. Bernard's Church, Billings, with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Billings.
A vigil will being at 7:30 tonight at St. Bernard's Catholic Church.
Rita was born Aug. 16, 1929, at Bismarck, the daughter of Joseph T. and Marion A. (Gruber) Smith. She was raised in Bismarck, attending St. Mary's Grade and High School. She graduated in 1947. Rita continued her education at Bismarck Junior College, completing that in 1949. In 1951 she moved to Billings, and in 1954, began working as a clerk with Burlington Northern Railroad. On Oct. 6, 1973, Rita married C. Dale Elery in Bismarck. They returned to Billings to continue their careers. Mrs. Elery retired in April 1983.
She was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church. Free time was often spent reading or collecting painting and statuary artwork. Rita loved to travel and enjoyed theatre and stage productions.
She is survived by her husband, C. Dale; one sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Paul Nordstog; and one brother and sister-in-law, Joseph T. and Pauline Smith Jr.; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ronald J. Elery and Connie C. Duffy; and two sisters-in-law, June Hennebry and Violet Wick.

Christine Permann
ELGIN -- Christine Permann, 91, Elgin, died Sept. 23, 1997, in the Mott nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Monday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elgin, with the Rev. Nancy Jaster officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Christine Kramer was born Aug. 25, 1906, in Kassel, Russia, to Frederick and Karolina (Schnabel) Kramer. The family came to the United States shortly thereafter and settled in the Wishek area. They homesteaded on a farm three miles east of Elgin where Christine grew up and attended a country school. She was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Christine married Jacob H. Permann, Oct. 12, 1926, at Elgin. They lived in Glen Ullin, then moved to Elgin in 1934. Christine was a housewife caring for her husband and children. She was a seamstress and crafts person who enjoyed crocheting, knitting and tatting. She was well known for the horseradish she prepared and sold through Vossler's Grocery Store and the Christmas cards she sold door to door. Christine gardened and raised many beautiful flowers, including African violets and cactus in her home.
She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Marvin "Bud" and Gertrude, Mesquite, Nev., and Jacob "Jack," San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Eleanor Thompson, Aurora, Colo.; one brother, Alvin Kramer, Bismarck; three sisters, Lydia Kock and Martha Kramer, both of Bismarck, and Freida Stock, Wishek; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1973; five brothers and two sisters.
Casketbearers will be LeRoy Boeckel, Mark Thompson, Mark Hoff, James Jessmore, Ray Friez and Larry Ternes.
The family prefers memorials to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Leslie Strum
SENTINEL BUTTE -- Leslie E. Strum, 83, Sentinel Butte, died Sept. 25, 1997, in Wibaux, Mont., following a long illness. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Tuesday, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Beach. Burial will be in Beach Lutheran Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Leonora; three sons, John, Sentinel Butte, Carl, Beach, and Loren, New Salem; and one sister, Gladys Johnson, Beach. (Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Beach)
Ervin Hintz
NEW LEIPZIG -- Ervin E. Hintz, 59, New Leipzig, died Sept. 24, 1997, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday, at Christus Congregational UCC Church, New Leipzig, with the Rev. James Amundson officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. CDT, at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with full military honors provided by Baesler-Achtenberg American Legion Post 211 of New Leipzig.
Serving as casketbearers are Clark Hodell, Donald Roth, Delvin Zimmerman, Ronald Will, Bruce Roth and Clifford Friesz. Honorary bearers are Merle Hintz, Clarence Roth Jr., Eugene Friesz, Dan Kienzle, and all friends and neighbors.
Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday, at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin. A family service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.
Ervin Edwin Hintz was born Aug. 2, 1938 in Elgin, the son of Jacob and Ida (Scheck) Hintz. He graduated from New Leipzig High School in 1957. He was inducted into the United States Army in 1961 and served in Germany. On Nov. 15, 1963 he was united in marriage to Brigitte Doll in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. Ervin was discharged, April 5, 1964 and they returned to the New Leipzig area where he farmed until his death.
Ervin was a board member of United Church of Christ, the Walker Township Assessor and member of Baesler-Achtenberg American Legion Post 211. He was also a substitute rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Mott.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Brigitte; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Mike and Donalda, Dickinson, and Stevan, New Castle, Wyo.; one daughter and son-in-law, Janelle and Gerald Steiner, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Michaela and Mitchell Hintz, Christopher, Travis and Amanda Hintz, and Austin Steiner; his mother, Ida Hintz, Mott; one sister, Leona Bryson, Kennewick, Wash.; and one brother, Edward, Dickinson.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jacob.
A memorial has been established.

DICKINSON -- Arlan Huncovsky, 40, Dickinson, died Sept. 26, 1997, in Dickinson. Arrangements are pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.
Regina Helm
Regina Helm, 81, Bismarck, died Sept. 25, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at the Baptist Home Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Clyde Leimberer officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, and will continue one hour prior to services, at the nursing home chapel.
Regina was born June 13, 1916 on a farm near Turtle Lake, the daughter of Frank and Sophia (Gett) Mantz. She lived in the Turtle Lake area and married Edwin Anderson. Later she moved to California where she married James Helm. She returned to North Dakota in 1973.
She is survived by four brothers, Jake, California, Robert, McClusky, and Reinhold and Henry, both of Bismarck; and one sister, Sophia Wilkins, California.
She was preceded in death by one brother; and two sisters.
Werner Mahlum
Werner C. Mahlum, 68, Fertile, Minn., died Sept. 26, 1997, in Fertile. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery, Fertile.

Gary Ulrickson
Gary Ulrickson, 52, Lynwood, Wash., formerly of Jamestown, died Sept. 22, 1997, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Jamestown.

Arlan Huncovsky
DICKINSON -- Arlan S. Huncovsky, 40, Dickinson, died Sept. 26, 1997, in Dickinson. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. MDT Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson.

Joan Hatzenbuhler
Joan Ann Hatzenbuhler, 51, St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck, died Sept. 26, 1997, in the nursing home where she had been a resident for several years. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Church of St. Joseph, Mandan, with the Rev. Austin Vetter officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will be held at 7:30. Visitation will continue from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent's Care Center, and from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Joan A. Hatzenbuhler was born June 26, 1946 in Bismarck, N.D., the daughter of John R. and Ida (Gratz) Hatzenbuhler. She was raised and educated in Mandan. Joan enjoyed dancing and her artwork, including drawing.
She is survived by her parents, John R. and Ida, Mandan; one brother and sister-in-law, John J. and Stephanie, Mandan; one sister and brother-in-law, Ida Marie and Jim Bauer, Mandan; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. This special daughter and sister was loved and will hold a place in our memories as we go on to live the life those memories have given us.
Virginia Lukes
Virginia R. Lukes, 55, Dupree, S.D., formerly of Garrison, died Sept. 24, 1997, in Dupree of cancer. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Monday at United Church of Christ, Dupree. Burial will be in Dupree Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Pete; six sons, Darryld Werner, Spring Hill, Kan., Carl Werner, Columbus, Neb., Clarence Werner, Sioux Falls, S.D., Tony Lukes, Dupree, S.D., and Jon and Robert Lukes, both of Spokane, Wash.; two daughters, Donna Till, Dupree, and Cheryl Malsam, Aberdeen, S.D.; and one brother, Ed Arndt, Sioux Falls. Alma Rueb
ASHLEY -- Alma M. Rueb, 82, Ashley, died Sept. 24, 1997, in the Ashley nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley. Burial will be in Ashley City Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. George; two sons, Adolph, Ashley, and the Rev. Emelia Berger
Emelia Berger, 80, St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck, died Sept. 27, 1997, at the nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Richardton. Further arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.
Kathyrne Straub
Kathyrne Elizabeth Straub, 79, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, died Sept. 1, 1997, in the nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. CDT Friday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Sorenson officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. MDT Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, New Leipzig.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue one hour before services at the church.
Kathyrne Frey was born July 17, 1918, on a farm south of Elgin, the daughter of Christian and Elizabeth (Wohl) Frey. She was raised on the family farm west of Elgin, and attended school in Elgin. For several years she worked on the Christ Dietz farm south of Elgin. On June 19, 1938, she married Erhardt Straub in Elgin. They farmed south of New Leipzig until 1971, when they moved to Bismarck. Kathyrne volunteered at the Senior Center for Meals on Wheels and Walk for Life. She entered the nursing home in August 1990.
She is survived by her husband, Erhardt; four daughters and sons-in-law, Arlene and Clifford Zimmerman, Sidney, Mont., Gloria and Donald Perot, Oak Grove, La., Judy and Rudy Veitz, Hettinger, and Janice and Jerome Schenfisch, Garrison; one son, Vernon, New Leipzig; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Ernest; four brothers; five sisters; and one grandchild.
Earl Haugen
Earl Theofield Hagen, D.C., Minnetonka, Minn., 89, died Aug. 25, 1997, in Minneapolis. Mr. Hagen was born Dec. 6, 1907 in Grand Forks.
He was a chiropractor for 40 years and practiced in Texas and Wisconsin. He was also a Mason for 54 years and Rotarian for 50 years.
He is survived by Ann Falk and her husband Robert, Thomas and Janelle Earl, and Susan Young; one grandson and his wife, Bryan and Kelly Frost; one granddaughter and her husband, Allison and Brian Will; great-grandchildren, Mauren and Natalie Jefferson, April, Jason and Heather Frost, John and Carol Will; and step-children, Jack and Peggy Humphreys, El Paso, Texas, and Robert Humphreys, Colorado Springs, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Hagen; one daughter, Erna Jane; and his wife, Janet Humphreys Hagen from Bismarck.
Harry Becher
Harry Becher, 75, 507 Eighth Ave. S.W., Mandan, died Sept. 1, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Mandan, with the Revs. Beth Conrad and Mark Phillips officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, with military rites by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Harry was born Sept. 24, 1921, in Blue Grass, the son of William and Hannah (Abrahams) Becher. He was raised and educated in Oliver County, attending the Youngtown School District. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp Camp from 1939-1942. His service time with the U.S. Army was from 1943-December 1945. On Oct. 25, 1945, he married Tinette Geuns in Liege, Belgium. Harry was employed as a mechanic at Becher Garage in Mandan, and Haakenson Garage in Bismarck. Later on he was employed as a foreman of a cement crew at Supercrete Industries, retiring in 1981.
He was a member of Mandan American Legion. Harry liked to do woodworking and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Tinette; one son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Nancy, Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Evelyn Becher, Mandan, and Micheline Hoffman, Bottineau; one grandchild, Candy; one brother and sister-in-law, Bennie and Frances, Bismarck; and one sister and brother-in-law, Selma and Harry Lieb, New Salem.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Edward.
W. Durward Koll
WIMBLEDON -- W. Durward Koll, 72, Wimbledon, died Sept. 2, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John's United Methodist Church, Wimbledon, with the Rev. Richard Sykes officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery, Wimbledon.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday at Peterson-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A prayer service and Masonic service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.
W. Durward Koll was born March 24, 1925, at Wimbledon, the son of William J. and Velma A. (Colberg) Koll. He grew up and graduated from high school where he was class salutatorian in 1943. Durward was in the Merchant Marine from 1945-January 1947. He attended radio school on Gallups Island, near Boston, where he received a radio code and second class license. After the war Durward continued to work for the Merchant Marine and later was a ship steward. Durward later returned to Wimbledon. He married Dorothy B. Ames, Oct. 10, 1948, at Wimbledon. The couple lived near Wimbledon where they farmed. Dorothy died July 21, 1997.
Durward was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and was very active in the church, where he served as chairman of the church trustees for a number of years. He was also chairman of the parsonage building committee in 1976, and was a member of the Methodist Church Board from 1960 until the present. Durward was also a member of the Methodist Men. He served as Pierce Township treasurer for five years and township clerk for 37 years. He also was on the Wimbledon Community Museum Board and Wimbledon Community German Band. He belonged to North Dakota Farmers Union, and was very active in the Masonic Lodge and its bodies, Eastern Star, Wimbledon Lodge No. 71 A.F. & A.M., served as past grand emminent commander of the Knights Templer, past high priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, illustrious master of the Grand Council of the Cryptic Masons. Durward belonged to Woodbine Chapter No. 4 in Valley City and Lady Washington Chapter No. 1 in Jamestown Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of El Zagal Shrine in Fargo.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Leslie and Dianne, Wimbledon; five daughters and two sons-in-law, Charlene Koll, Fargo, Sherry and Jim McGuire, Jamestown, Beverly Viestenz, Tucson, Ariz., Nila and Tom Halvorson, Fargo, and Kristi Koll, Fargo; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Koll, Wimbledon; one brother and sister-in-law, Laurel and Merita, Ruleville, Miss.; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Wesley; and his parents.
Wilbert Wetzel
GLEN ULLIN -- Wilbert Wetzel, 72, Glen Ullin, died Sept. 1, 1997, in Glen Ullin. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with burial in Glen Ullin Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Thursday at Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Wilbert was born June 9, 1925, at Hebron, the son of Edward and Lydia (Miller) Wetzel. He was raised and educated at Glen Ullin. He married Edna Winckler, May 4, 1947, at Bluegrass. They farmed near Glen Ullin. In 1975 they moved into town but continued to farm until retiring in 1992. Wilbert also repaired shoes up until a year ago. He entered Marian Manor Nursing Home, July 21, 1997.
He was a member of Evangelical Congregational Church and Farmers Union.
He is survived by his wife, Edna; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dennis and Carol, Glen Ullin, Clyde and Lois, New Salem, and Neal and his fiancee, Linda Ewald, Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Angela, Scott, Lisa, Jay and Sara Wetzel; and one brother and sister-in-law, Ewald and Luella, Bismarck.
