Vera Rogler
Vera Rogler, 83, Mandan, died Sept. 19, 1997, in the Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Stephen Eastin officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.
Vera Minnie Thompson was born Dec. 17, 1913, at Eskridge, Kan., the daughter of Horace and Edna (Montgomery) Thompson. She was educated in the area and attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., where she met and later married George A. Rogler, March 20, 1936. Shortly thereafter, she and George moved to Mandan where they have resided since.
Vera was a life member of Eastern Star and had been awarded a life membership by the Presbyterian Women. She was also a member of Mandan Hospital Volunteers and the Mandan Golden Age Club. A gentle and kind lady, Vera was first and foremost a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was an immaculate housekeeper, an excellent cook and also enjoyed flowers. Vera loved to ballroom and square dance. She and George spent many happy hours together dancing.
Vera is survived by her husband, George; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and James Schieffer, Grafton, and Susan and Ronald Troop, Bloomington, Minn.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, James Thompson, Harveyville, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister; and two brothers.
Memorials are preferred to First Presbyterian Church, Mandan.
Mary Jo Birst
Mary Jo Birst, 60, 2723 Gateway Ave., died of cancer Sept. 20, 1997, in her home. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Monday at Boelter Funeral Home.
Mary Jo was born April 15, 1937, in St. Paul, Minn., the daughter of Herman and Josephine Kaphing. She was raised and educated in the Stillwater and St. Paul area.
She was a member of the U.S. Air Force. Mary Jo married Claude Lawler in 1957. She moved to Bismarck in 1967. She then married Raymond Birst in 1972. She worked for the Federal Crop Insurance Corp. from 1969 until retiring in 1992.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond; one daughter and son-in-law, Deb and Art Fode, Bismarck; one son, Jeffery Lawler, Bismarck; five step-children, Linda and Merle Greer, New Richmond, Wis., Judy and Tim Jose, Colorado Springs, Colo., Jacalyn Peck, Los Angeles, Calif., Richard Birst, Kula, Hawaii, and Jeffrey, Birst, Royal Oak, Michigan; six grandchildren, Shaun, Jessie, Melissa and Brian Kelly, James and Bree Fode, and Bethany and Erick Greer; four great-grandchildren; three brothers and one sister-in-law, William and Bridie Kaphing, St. Paul, Minn., Gerald Kaphing, Tucson, Ariz., and Herman Kaphing Jr., Tucson; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents; and her first husband.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Alexius Hospice.

HARVEY -- Nettie Zweigle, 84, Harvey, died Sept. 18, 1997, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mennonite Brethren Church, Harvey, with burial in Country Mennonite Brethren Cemetery, rural Harvey.

Ida Goll
Ida Pauline Goll, 97, Missouri Slope Care Center, died Sept. 19, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Joel Sherer officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Goodrich Cemetery.
Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Ida Goll was born Dec. 7, 1899, at Harvey, to David and Pauline (Wells) Schimke. She was raised and educated in the Harvey area. On Nov. 22, 1925, she married John Goll at Harvey. They farmed north of Goodrich until 1945 when they moved into Goodrich. John died in 1961. Ida continued to live in Goodrich until 1966, when she moved to Bismarck.
She is survived by one daughter, Darlene Hieb, Bismarck; two grandsons, Dr. Richard Hieb, Bismarck, and Jason Hieb, Spirit Lake, Iowa; two great-grandsons, Matt and Ben Hieb, Bismarck; seven sisters and five brothers-in-law, Edna Nutz, Greenville, S.C., Tracy Lieschner, Wessington Springs, S.D., Linda and Carl Tiede, Albany, Ore., Alma and Reuben Winter, Huron, S.D., Viola and Melvin Siebold, New Rockford, Edna and Walter Zoller, Bismarck, and Ruth and Kelly Edinger, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; one son-in-law, Jake Hieb; her parents; three brothers, Bill, Emanuel and Herbert; and three sisters, Emma Nutz, Leona Goll and Hilda Winter.

Jacob Brucker
Jacob P. "Jake" Brucker, 76, 703 Eighth Ave. N.W., Mandan, died Sept. 20, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery, with military rites by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7 tonight, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30 tonight.
Jacob P. was born March 23, 1921, in Mandan, to Anton and Monica (Reisenhauer) Brucker. He graduated from Mandan High School in 1939. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945. He started his 40 year career with Northern Pacific Railroad in 1942. He was a clerk until his retirement in 1982. During his time with the railroad Jake represented the Clerical Employees Union as the local chairperson for 39 years. At the national level he was elected general secretary treasurer for the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks of St. Paul, Minn. He began his career with the Credit Union of the Mandan Railway Employees in 1967 as an assistant manager. He was promoted to chief executive officer and served in that position until the present time.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, Mandan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Renee, Mandan, and Paul and Mary, Bismarck; four grandchildren, Ryan, Alicia, Victoria and Jake Brucker II; one brother, Ben, Spokane, Wash.; and one brother-in-law, Leonard Schmautz, Mandan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Charles Martz; and one sister, Caroline Schmautz.
Jacob was a member of Knights of Columbus and American Legion.
Dana Fasthorse
Dana Paul Fasthorse, 21, Cannon Ball, died Sept. 20, 1997, in Cannon Ball. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Cannon Ball School Gym, with the Rev. Marlon Hunte officiating. Burial will be in Fasthorse Cemetery, south of Cannon Ball.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday at the school gym.
Dana Paul Fasthorse was born April 26, 1976, in Fort Yates, to Magdalene Fasthorse. He was raised in Cannon Ball and attended Cannon Ball and Solen high schools. Dana had many interests as a young boy. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and uncles. He very much enjoyed playing basketball and won many awards and shared many victories with his teammates. He was also on the Solen cross country team.
Dana always had a sense of humor and made everyone laugh. He cared very much for his mother, grandmother and his family. He enjoyed the company of his friends and was always active in sports. Dana worked for Prairie Knights Casino in 1996, and in January 1997 he started his present job for Standing Rock Water and Sewer Program in Fort Yates. He enjoyed his work and always went beyond the call of duty.
He is survived by his mother, Mgadalene Fasthorse, Cannon Ball; two brothers, Edison Fasthorse and Robert Fool Bear Jr., both of Cannon Ball; his dear grandmother, Evangeline Fasthorse, Cannon Ball; uncles and aunts, Edward B. Swifthorse, Cannon Ball, Volney and Lori Fasthorse, Solen, Larry and Marvine Fasthorse, Fort Yates, Edgar Fasthorse, Solen, Edmund and Brenda Fasthorse, Cannon Ball, Edsel Fasthorse and Randez Bailey, Fort Yates; one aunt and uncle, Margaret and Wayne Carry Moccasin, Solen; several very close cousins, Michele Fasthorse, Grant Fasthorse, Darius Fasthorse, Larson Fasthorse, Sarita Fasthorse, Casey Fasthorse, Ben and Bee Fasthorse, Brandon Fasthorse; his special little boy, Christopher; and a very special friend, Veronica Thunderhawk, Cannon Ball.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Harry and Lillian Swifthorse, and his grandfather, Edward B. Fasthorse Sr.
He will be greatly missed by his co-workers, Louis Garza, OM&R water operators and OM&R office staff. He will also be greatly missed by his mother, brothers, grandmother, uncles, aunts, cousins and all relatives and close friends.
Marie Azure
Marie F. Azure, 56, Selfridge, died Sept. 18, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church, Porcupine, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Thursday at Porcupine Head Start Building.
Marie's parents were Thomas and Josephine (One Hawk) Carry Moccasin. She attended school at the Becker Day School in Porcupine, Fort Yates, and graduated from nurses training at United Tribes Technical College. Marie was employed as a cook at the Department of Law Enforcement at the time of her death. Marie worked as a cook at Porcupine Head Start, Pierre Indian Learning Center, BIA School, Grant School and Medcenter One in Bismarck. She married Julius Azure, Nov. 15, 1976, at McIntosh, S.D.
Marie served as Porcupine district treasurer for eight years. She was active in community activities and helped whenever she could. Marie also served on the Porcupine Powwow Committee. She enjoyed going camping at powwows, reading, visiting with friends and relatives at bingo and working in her yard. Her favorite sports teams were the Chicago Bulls and Denver Broncos. Her happiest moments were spent with her grandchildren and cooking for them. She was a very special person to her sons, and especially her daughter.
She is survived by her husband, Julius; five sons, Ronnie and Fred IronShield, Denver, Troy IronShield, Porcupine, Alex and Beau James Azure, Selfridge; one daughter, Ruth IronShield, Wolf Point, Mont.; 13 grandchildren; two brothers, Jesse Carry Moccasin, Fort Yates, and James Carry Moccasin Sr., Selfridge; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Josephine (One Hawk) Carry Moccasin; two sisters, Vivian Carry Moccasin and Agnes Carry Moccasin; one son, Myron IronShield Sr.; and one granddaughter, Audrey IronShield.
Jacob Oster
WILTON -- Jacob K. "Jack" Oster, 74, Wilton, died Sept. 21, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Wilton, with the Rev. Mary-Lee Lint officiating. As Jack wished, his body has been donated to the University of North Dakota School of Medicine.
Jacob K. Oster was born April 8, 1923, in Fargo. He was raised in the Beulah area, the son of Jacob J. and Christine Oster. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II. After his discharge, he met Margaret Weber in Killdeer and they were married in Wibaux, Mont. in 1946. They lived in several small communities in North Dakota during the early years of Jack's 42-year career as an agent-telegrapher and dispatcher with the Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroads. He and Marge spent most of their married life in the Wilton and Regan area. A member of the Transportation Communication Union, American Legion and First Presbyterian Church in Wilton, he also served his community as a municipal judge for several years. After his retirement, Jack worked at the Painted Woods Golf Course in Washburn. He enjoyed both fishing and golfing and was a collector of many things. Jack was perhaps best known for his positive, upbeat outlook on life and a never ending sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife, Marge; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie and Don Griffin, Bismarck, Sonja and Mike Walder, and Joyce and Kevin Wike, all of Wilton; one son and daughter-in-law, Bert and Heidi, Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
