Stephanie Medicine Stone
TWIN BUTTES -- Stephanie Agnes Medicine Stone, 24, Twin Buttes, died Jan. 5, 1998, in a Minot hospital from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident three years ago. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Saturday, at Twin Buttes Memorial Hall. Burial will be in Medicine Stone Cemetery, rural Twin Buttes.
She is survived by her son, Terran Jay Medicine Stone; her parents, Darcy and Clarice; one sister, LeLoni Running Bear, Fort Yates; her grandparents, Ernest and Vivian Medicine Stone, Twin Buttes; her grandmothers, Lucy Keeble, Waubay, S.D., Lois Rosario, Mandaree, and Mabel Henry, Tyndall, S.D.; and her grandfathers, Ted Lone Fight II, Watford City, and Nathan Lone Fight, Mandaree. Ione Vincent
HETTINGER -- Ione Vincent, 88, Hettinger, died Jan. 6, 1998, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Friday, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hettinger. Burial will be in Hettinger Cemetery.

Eva Himmerich
DAWSON -- Eva L. Himmerich, 84, Dawson, died Jan. 7, 1998, in the Steele nursing home. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Dawson Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Sharon Kapsch officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Dawson Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel, Steele, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Eva Lang was born Dec. 1, 1913, in Kidder County, the daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Kirschenmann) Lang. She married Otto Himmerich on Oct. 19, 1933.
Eva and Otto lived and farmed near Dawson and Napoleon for more than 50 years. Eva had been a resident of Golden Manor Nursing Home for the past five months.
The church and Christian faith were very important to Eva.
She was a charter member of Dawson Lutheran Church for the past 50 years and was active in the Ladies Aid Group.
Eva supported Otto in the farming operations. For a number of years, she also managed her own business, selling eggs to numerous businesses in Bismarck and Mandan as well as raising and selling spring fryers.
She enjoyed traveling and she and Otto spent nearly 20 years as snow birds in Arizona.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Betty Himmerich, Stark City, Mo.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Arlene Beal, Plymouth, Minn., and Connie and Tom Kuhn, Dawson; nine grandchildren, Melody and Dan Johnson, Lakota, Darwin and Raina Himmerich, Pleasantville, Iowa, David Himmerich, Stark City, Mechelle and Jerry Musser, Sarcoxie, Mo., Sarah Beal, St. Paul, Minn., Anna Beal, Corvallis, Ore., Michael Kuhn, Bismarck, and Matthew and Mikayla Kuhn, Dawson; five great-grandchildren, Christopher and Brandon Johnson, Heidi and Grant Himmerich and Jordan and Darci Musser; one sister, Freida Overstreet, Sutter Creek, Calif.; and two brothers, G.J. Lang, Dawson, and Fred Lang, Napoleon.

Anna Hoerner
Anna Hoerner, 83, Mandan, formerly of Glen Ullin, died Jan. 7, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. MST Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with the Rev. Claude Seeberger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation begins after 4 p.m. today at Christ the King Church, Mandan, where a prayer service will be said at 7:30 tonight by the Rev. Al Leary. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday.
Anna Mattern was born on Jan. 6, 1915, in Glen Ullin, to Peter and Mary (Simon) Mattern. She was raised in Glen Ullin and attended Sacred Heart School.
She married Frank Hoerner on Jan. 17, 1935, at Sacred Heart in Glen Ullin. Following their marriage, they moved to a farm southwest of Glen Ullin and began farming.
Frank died Nov. 4, 1966. Anna moved into Mandan in 1972, where she has made her home since.
Anna enjoyed crafts and playing cards with her friends. Anna will long be remembered as a devoted grandmother.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Ann, Almont, John and Laurie, Helena, Mont., and Donald and Brenda, Glen Ullin; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Bea Mattern, and Nick and Catherine Mattern, all of Tacoma, Wash.

Milo Iron Road
Milo Iron Road, 77, 1504 3rd Ave. N.W., Mandan, died Jan. 6, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Cannon Ball School Gym.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

LaVerne Janke
JAMESTOWN -- LaVerne J. Janke, 62, Jamestown, died Jan. 7, 1998, at her home. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church, Jamestown. Burial will be in Gackle Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, David; two daughters, Deborah Wenzel, Jamestown, and Sandra Sodawasser, Courtenay; one son, Randolph, Farmington, Minn.; one brother, Norman Bier, Spicer, Minn.; and two sisters, Betty Hastings, Bismarck, and Gloria Olson, Moorhead, Minn. Julian Johnson
RAY -- Julian Johnson, 79, longtime Ray community leader, farmer, and businessman, died Jan. 7, 1998, in Scottsdale, Ariz. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Ray Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Stan Dolan officiating. Burial will be in Rainbow Valley Cemetery, rural Ray.
Visitation will be from 1-6 p.m. today at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Julian was born Sept. 24, 1918, to George and Thea Johnson on the family farm south of Alamo. The family later moved to a farm northwest of Ray. Julian attended country schools and graduated from Ray High School.
Following high school, he worked for three years with the Great Northern Railroad until taking over the family farm at age 21 after the death of his father. Julian operated the family farm for more than 40 years with his brother, Arthur Johnson.
In 1955, he married Betty Jane Bloom, in Lignite. That same year, he started the Farmers Union Insurance Agency in Ray, operating the business for 30 years.
Following his retirement in 1983, Julian and Betty spent their winters in the Scottsdale, Ariz., area, where they were members of Bethelehem Lutheran Church, Mesa, Ariz.
Julian's service to his church and community were extensive. He was a member of Ray Lutheran Church, where he served as the Council President and Co-chair of the Church Building Committee. He helped initiate development of the Ray Mini Mall and assisted in building the Ray Golf Course.
He served on numerous community boards including those of the Tioga Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital of Williston, Farmers Union Oil Company of Ray, Farmers Union Elevator Cooperative of Ray, and the Williams County Farmers Union.
He was a 40-year member of the Ray Lions Club and a member of the Elks, Moose, Sons of Norway and the Ray Association of Commerce.
Throughout his life, Julian was extensively involved in the Farmers Union and the Democratic-NPL Party. As a long-time Non-Partisan League member, he was active in pushing for the merger of the NPL with the Democratic Party in North Dakota.
He served many years as Dem-NPL District 2 Chair and Treasurer, served as a delegate to numerous State Democratic Party conventions and assisted dozens of local and statewide political candidates.
Julian is survived by his wife of 43 years, Betty; his son and daughter-in-law, Jerol and Caroline, Apple Valley, Minn., his son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Jill Fedje, and grandson, Alexander Fedje-Johnson, all of Minneapolis; one brother, Arthur, Ray; two sisters, Adelaide Johnson and Eleanor Johnson, both of Minot; and 13 nieces and nephews.

Louise Lupo
DICKINSON -- Louise Lupo, 88, Dickinson, died Jan. 7, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. MST Saturday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Kostelecky and Lucille Zaleski, both of Dickinson; and two sons, Anton, Dickinson, and Joseph, Watford City. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)
Kyle McCay
Kyle Paul McCay, 21, 1101 Westwood St., Bismarck, died Jan. 7, 1998, in Sturgis, S.D. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Joel Sherer officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Kyle was born Oct. 28, 1976, in Fargo, the son of Chuck and Gwen McCay. He resided with his family in Minot from November of 1976 until October of 1986, where he attended Campus Lab School. His family then moved to Bismarck.
He attended Miller Elementary School and Simle Junior High School. He graduated from Century High School, where he participated in wrestling. He also attended Minot State University in Bottineau.
Kyle spent three summers working at Iowana Beach Resort in northern Minnesota and two summers in Medora. He was most recently employed with S & B Landscaping in Bismarck.
Kyle was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed all outdoor activities.
He is survived by his parents, Chuck and Gwen; one sister and brother-in-law, Janna and Kerry Williams, Minot Air Force Base; one brother, Ryan, Duluth, Minn.; two nieces, Maia and Bria Williams; his aunts and uncles, David and Roberta McCay, Alexandria, Minn., Georgine and Bill Harrington, Coppell, Texas, and Randy and Judy Lage, Mound, Minn.; several cousins; and a special friend, Joelle Krikava, Bismarck.
He was preceded in death by four grandparents and one aunt.
Kyle leaves many special friends whom he had known through his varied school and work experiences.
Mildred Seagren
WEST FARGO -- Mildred A. Seagren, 72, West Fargo, died Jan. 8, 1998, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church, West Fargo.
She is survived by three daughters, Karen Wallace, Minneapolis, Jean Ramstad, Hatton, and Janet Burgett, Ada, Minn.; one son, Monty, Bismarck; one sister, Evelyn Johnson, West Fargo; and two brothers, Harold and Alfred Johnson, both of Moorhead, Minn. (WEST Funeral Home, West Fargo)
Ernestine Meckler
Ernestine Meckler, 82, 117 Sioux Ave., died peacefully in her home while surrounded by family on May 8, 1998.
Born and raised in Bismarck, Ernestine devoted much of her life to helping others. During the war she volunteered as a "Grey Lady." As a founding member of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, she dedicated many hours to the Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters of America and singing in the church choir. She had a great love of music and enjoyed playing the organ for her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jack F.; and her six children, Marilyn Ouren, Sharon Butler, Thomas Meckler, Dennis Meckler, Carrie Van Hoy and Terri Frank; their spouses; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and special friends. She is also survived by her brothers, Victor Carufel and Louis Carufel; and her sisters, Marion Grady, Rosemary Knutsen and Virginia Pierce.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mathea Wilhem and Janet Riechert; two brothers, Philip Carufel and Robert Carufel; and one grandson, Steven Ouren.
She will be lovingly remembered and cherished by her family, and we thank her for a lifetime of listening, teaching, laughing and loving.
A Catholic Daughter's rosary will be said at 7 tonight at Boelter Funeral Home, and will be followed by a vigil. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today and 9-11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.
The family prefers memorials to Home on the Range for Boys or to Child's Hope Learning Center.
McKenna Schiermeister
McKenna LaRae Schiermeister, the infant daughter of Tiffany and Mikel Schiermeister, Bismarck, died May 9, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.
Mildred Solberg
Mildred Ongstad Solberg, 89, Northwood, died May 9, 1998, in Northwood. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Vang Lutheran Church, Manfred, with burial in the church cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. A.B. Solberg, Grand Forks; and one brother, Herbert Ongstad, Manfred. (Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden)
Robert Pfliger
Robert "Bob" Pfliger, 68, was born Dec. 5, 1929, in Bismarck, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Pfliger. At 14, Bob went to work at Lomas Oil. He returned to Bismarck High School, leaving again to work on the family farm. At 19, he wired the farm for his parents, working under the guidance of a master electrician.
In June 1953, Bob married Genevieve Mertz in Bismarck, and in July entered the U.S. Army, taking his training in Camp Riley, Kan. He was then stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. He made a trip home in the spring of 1955 to put in the crops for his ill father. He was honorably discharged in July 1955, and his first job was harvesting the family's crops. Bob went to work at Ed Phillips, where he worked for 24 years.
Bob made his home one-half mile from the family farm and was on call for nine years because of his father's illness. In 1964, the family moved to 2012 Fourth St., Bismarck, where he resided at the time of his death.
Bob was injured in May 1989 while working at Gateway Mall and he retired. Through the years he bravely fought many illnesses until his death.
Bob dearly loved to garden and make his yard beautiful. Before his health declined, he enjoyed working on cars, both new and antique.
Through the years Bob was a member of the Masonic Lodge, El Zagal Shrine and Dusters. He had memberships in both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and had memberships in Dakota Zoo, Central Dakota Humane Society and James River Humane Society.
During the last several years as Bob's health worsened, he was very happy to have visitors when housebound, and the family pomeranians were his daily beloved companions.
In place of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Dakota Zoo, the Central Dakota Humane Society and the James River Humane Society in Jamestown.
Bob's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Burial will be in St. Jacob's Lutheran Cemetery, Goodrich.
Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday at the funeral home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Bob is survived by his wife of 45 years, Genevieve; one son, Robert, Citrus Heights, Calif.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Barbara Jean and Steve Graveline, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Ranada Davis, Bismarck; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat and Richard Vogel, Sacramento, Calif., Sally and Dick Boomsma, Huron, S.D.; one brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Eunice, Wheatland; two sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Pfliger, Minot, and Pat Pfliger, Bismarck; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Monte and Paula Mertz, Fargo, and Lance and Debbie Mertz, Ketchikan, Alaska; and his mother-in-law, Bertha Mertz, Fargo.
