WILTON -- Walter Stute, 84, Wilton, died Jan. 4, 1998, in the Turtle Lake hospital. Arrangements are pending at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake.

Alice Brezden
Alice Brezden, 92, Westhope, died Jan. 4, 1998, in a Westhope nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Boelter Funeral Home. A rosary will be said at 7 tonight at the funeral home. Further arrangements are pending at Boelter Funeral Home.

Olga Wahl
HARVEY -- Olga Wahl, 89, Harvey, died Jan. 3, 1998, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Mennonite Brethren Church, Harvey, with graveside services at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McClusky Cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Snyder, Leesburg, Fla.; two sons, Bruce, Harvey, and David, Arlington, Va.; and one sister, Emma Leppke, Carrington. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

GRACE CITY -- Odis H. Scanson, 76, Grace City, died Jan. 4, 1998, in a Mesa, Ariz. hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Grace City United Methodist Church. Further arrangements are pending at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Mary Oukrop-DeFea
DICKINSON -- Mary Oukrop-DeFea, 84, Dickinson, died Jan. 3, 1998, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters, Roberta Kadrmas and Sharon Holz, both of Dickinson; three brothers, Louie Sevela, Seattle, Albert Sevela, Dickinson, and Charles Sevela, Elmer, Wash.; and one sister, Rose Schopp, Wenatchee, Wash. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

She is survived by her husband, Seb; one daughter, Leona Howell, Metamora, Mich.; and one sister, Mabel Harding, Clark, S.D.

Alta Johnson
MINOT -- Alta Johnson, 85, longtime Minot area educator died Jan. 3, 1998, in a Minot nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Robinson, with burial in Robinson Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at Thomas Funeral Home, Minot, where a prayer service will begin at 7:30 tonight.

Alta Ingaborg Johnson was born May 20, 1912, on the family farm in Atwood Township of Kidder County near Tuttle, to Hans and Dina (Friestad) Johnson. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural schools in that area. Alta graduated from Tuttle High School in 1931 as the class valedictorian. She attended Minot State University where she eventually received her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education. She began her career as an educator at the Barton School No. 1 in north Kidder County and then spent five years at rural Kidder County schools and four years at consolidated schools in that area. She taught two years in Chaseley, two years in Sawyer, and four years in Devils Lake during World War II before moving to Renton, Wash. where she taught first grade for four years. Miss Johnson returned to North Dakota in 1949 where she taught first grade at Riverdale for 11 years before moving to Minot in 1960, where she taught first grade at Longfellow Elementary School for 10 years. She completed her career in education as the library assistant at Minot High School campus for seven years. She retired in May of 1977 following 46 years as an educator. She had continued to reside in Minot entering the Trinity Nursing Home in 1991.

Miss Johnson was a former president of the local and state education associations and was a member of the National Education Association. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church where she served as Sunday school teacher for many years and as a Sunday school superintendent. A member of the Delta Kappa Gamma organization. She was active in politics with the Democratic NPL Party.

She is survived by one brother, Edwin Johnson, Tuttle; four sisters, Lillie Bauer, Bismarck, Palma Larson, Sioux Falls, S.D., Gladys Lybeck, Tucson, Ariz., and Judith Heteltved, Robinson; and one aunt, Laura Lovro, Hendricks, Minn.

Kathryn Day
MINOT -- Kathryn Day, 89, longtime Minot resident, died Jan. 2, 1998, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Minot, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Thomas Funeral Home, Minot.

Kathryn Laura Kemp was born July 11, 1908, in Granville, to Edward and Zora (Richards) Kemp. She was raised in Granville and graduated from Granville High School. She attended Minot State University prior to teaching at several rural schools including Drady and Medina. She married Sherman Day, Nov. 29, 1930, in Fargo. They made their home in Medina where both were educators. The family moved to Minot in 1932 where he continued as a teacher and later was employed by Northern States Power Co. Sherman died Feb. 5, 1987. Mrs. Day continued to reside in Minot until moving to Bismarck in 1994 to be nearer her daughter's family.

Mrs. Day was an active member of the community where she served on the board of directors of the YWCA, was a charter member of Metropolitan Dinner Club, and was a member of the PEO Chapter AG, Order of Eastern Star and First Presbyterian Church. She was a Beta Theta Sorority patroness and was a member of the City Art League which involved her in the public library building restoration project. She was known for her beautiful creative floral arrangements, centerpieces and decorations that adorned the tables of numerous community events. Her love for flowers extended to her yard and garden. She was a dear and devoted friend to those near to her and was happiest doing things for others.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Priscilla and Jerry Wilson, Bismarck, and Janice and Jack Block, Polson, Mont.; four grandchildren, Brad Wilson, LeAnne DeFrance, Jeff Block and Joel Block; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Lavalley, Glendora, Calif.; and a special cousin, Jane Gray Stewart, Bismarck.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Sherman Edward Day; three sisters, Mary Alexander, Zora Rohrenbach and Charlotte Ipsen; and one brother, Allen Kemp.

Martin Bender
Martin D. Bender, 82, 2326 County Road 136, St. Anthony, died Jan. 4, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Robert E. Feeney officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a St. Anthony Verein rosary at 8.

Martin Bender was born Feb. 15, 1915, in St. Anthony. He was the son of Dominic and Anna (Leingang) Bender. Martin was raised and educated in St. Anthony. He married Katherine Renner, Oct. 19, 1937, in St. Anthony. They farmed in the St. Anthony area until retiring in 1979 and moving into St. Anthony.

Martin was a member of St. Anthony Verein where he held the position of treasurer for several years. He also served on the school board of the Little Heart District.

He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, James and Joann, and Dennis and Marlene, all of Mandan, Richard and Barbara Jean, Maple Grove, Minn., and Charles and Gladnie, Upland, Calif.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Patricia and Tony Kautzman, Mandan, and Sherry Bender, St. Anthony; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and three sisters and one brother-in-law, Thelma Bogglin, Coronado, Calif., Clara Renner, Merritt, Island, Fla., and Clementine and Jacob Doll, Mandan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Katherine, who died Sept. 20, 1996; five brothers, Adam, Jack, George, Anton and Nick; three infant brothers; and four sisters, Francis and Regina Bullinger, Mary Stumpf and Rose Hellman.

Mike Haider
Mike J. Haider, 93, 1100 Fourth Ave. East, Mobridge, S.D., died Jan. 4, 1998, in a Mobridge nursing home. Services will be held at 10-30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church, Porcupine, with the Rev. William O'Connell officiating. Burial will in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2:30-9 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, where a rosary will be said at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will also be for one half hour prior to services at the church on Thursaday.

Mike was born July 9, 1904, in St. Anthony. He was the son of the late George and Agnes Haider. Mike was raised and educated in the St. Anthony area. He married Martha Vetter on June 21, 1926, in Porcupine. He farmed and ranched all his life in the Shields area, retiring in 1970.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Martha; four sons and four daughters-in-law, Jake and Della, Belfield, Robert, Mobridge, Paul and Elaine, Mandan, Joe and Sharon, Chinook, Mont., and Alice Haider, Gladstone, Mont.; four daughters and five sons-in-law, Lucille and Floyd Borchert, and Ilene and Robert Lipp, all of Mobridge, Judy and Edward Hellman, Rapid City, S.D., Michael Murphy, Shields, and Carol and Joe Waliser, Piedmont, S.D.; 51 grandchildren; 98 great-grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Andrew and Shirley, Colorado Springs, Colo., Arthur and Betty, Sandy, Ore., and Clemence and Francis, Portland, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ted; one daughter, LaVonne; six brothers, Tony, George, Henry, Richard, Lawrence and Edwin; three sisters, Agnes, Mary and Elizabeth; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Cecelia Riedinger
Cecilia Riedinger, 70, 716 E. Sweet Ave., died Jan. 5, 1998, at her home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Richter officiating. A spring burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today, and 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, both at Dakota Memorial Chapel, where a rosary will be said at 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Cecilia Immel was born May 21, 1927, in Mandan, the daughter of Isadore and Cecilia (Stein) Immel. She was raised and educated in the rural schools near Crown Butte. On April 16, 1945, she married Isadore Riedinger at Crown Butte. Following their marriage, Cecilia lived in Bismarck, while Isadore served in the U.S. Army. Following his discharge, he returned to Bismarck, where they have since lived. Mr. Riedinger died in 1971.

Cecilia enjoyed cooking, gardening and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Rochelle Hill and Carri Riedinger, both of Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Teri, Mandan; one sister, Monica Himmelspach, Mandan; and one brother, Joseph Immel, Ranchester, Wyo.; seven grandsons; five granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Isadore; and four sons, Eugene, Rodney, Edward and Richard. (Dakota Memorial Chapel, Bismarck)

Alice Brezden
WESTHOPE -- Alice M. Brezden, 92, Westhope, formerly of Bismarck, died Jan. 4, 1998, in the Westhope nursing home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Theodore Gustin officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Wilton.

Alice was born Oct. 1, 1905, in Wilton, the daughter of Luka and Anna (Margaretta) Brezden. Alice worked at the Bismarck Hospital for many years. Later she worked for several families in Bismarck as a housekeeper. She entered the Westhope nursing home in September 1991.

Alice is survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her four brothers and three sisters. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Kenneth Jewett
Kenneth Lyle Jewett, 55, Eagle Butte, S.D., died Dec. 26, 1997, in the Fort Yates hospital of natural causes. Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at the H.V. Johnston Cultural Center, Eagle Butte. Burial was in Emmanuel Episcopal Cemetery, White Horse, S.D.

He is survived by three sons, Richard and Kenneth Jr., both of Bismarck, and Lionel, Fort Yates; three daughters, Marvella Jewett, Fort Yates, Theresa Jewett, Tucson, Ariz., and Gwen Jewett, Rapid City, S.D.; and two brothers, Cyril Jewett and Edison Fast Horse, both of Eagle Butte, S.D. Sierra Sticka
DICKINSON -- Sierra Lynn Sticka, 11, Dickinson, died Jan. 4, 1998, at her home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MST Wednesday at River of Life Assembly Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in Dickinson Cemetery.

She is survived by her parents, Dennis and Linda; two brothers, Michael and Eric, both of Dickinson; her grandparents, Lena Sticka, Schefield, and Vernon J. Igard, Dickinson, and Marlene Gutierrez, Cheyenne, Wyo. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Everett Cannon
FARGO -- Everett Garth Cannon, 81, Fargo, died Dec. 21, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Services were held on Dec. 27, 1997, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Fargo. Burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; four sons, Darr, Kirkland, Wash., Keith, Detroit Lakes, Minn., Joel, Fargo, and Clair Ross, Hammond, Ind.; and one daughter, Jill Garrison, Bloomington, Minn.

Mary Krieger
DUNN CENTER -- Mary Krieger, 84, Dunn Center, died Jan. 2, 1998, in a Killdeer nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MST Thursday, at Normanna Lutheran Church, Dunn Center. Burial will be in Dunn Center Cemetery.

She is survived by two brothers, Robert, Killdeer, and Ed, White Earth; and two sisters, Bertha Mead, and Martha Ford, both of Dunn Center. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Walter Stute
WILTON -- Walter E. Stute, 84, Wilton, formerly of Mercer, died Jan. 4, 1998, in the Turtle Lake hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mercer Community Hall. Burial will be in Mercer Cemetery.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. (Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake)

Rose Tereschenko
DICKINSON -- Rose Tereschenko, 87, Dickinson, formerly of Belfield, died Jan. 4, 1998, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Thursday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Belfield. Further arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Elizabeth Breum
TAYLOR -- Elizabeth Breum, 87, Taylor, died Jan. 5, 1998, in a Dickinson nursing home after a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday at Taylor Lutheran Church. Further arrangements are pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Viola Berve
Viola Berve, 83, Alamo County, died Jan. 5, 1998, in a Billings, Mont., nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church, Alamo. Further arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Ignatz Horner
LINTON -- Ignatz Horner, 86, Linton, died Jan. 5, 1998, in the Linton hospital. Arrangements are pending with Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

Aino Kangas
Aino Kangas, 86, Golden Manor Nursing Home, Steele, died Jan. 5, 1998, in the Steele nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Grace Lutheran Church, Driscoll, with the Rev. Jo Olson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today, at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Aino was born on April 18, 1911, in Wing, the daughter of August and Eva (Amoija) Kangas. She worked for several families in the Wing area and later on her farm with her brother, John. After retiring she lived in the Driscoll area with her daughter and son-in-law. She then moved to Bismarck with her daughter in 1995. She entered the Golden Manor Nursing Home in October of 1997.

Aino enjoyed music and visiting with her family and friends.

She leaves a daughter, Helen Renschler, Bismarck; a granddaughter, Carol and her husband, Kevin Wagner, Lincoln; one great-grandson, Reed, and one great-granddaughter, Harley, both of Lincoln; a sister-in-law, Elna Kangas, Hemet, Calif.; one niece, Betty Zachmeier and her husband, Tony, and their two children, Tyler and Riley, all of Bismarck. She is also survived by one cousin, Ray Koskela and his wife, Lisa, San Pedro, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; two sisters; and one son-in-law, Ray Renschler. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)
