Del Maier
Del Maier, 67, 4110 N. Highway 77, Harlingen, Texas, formerly of Bismarck, died May 11, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Mark Bayert officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Del was born July 20, 1929, in Bismarck, the son of Emil and Emma (Bickle) Maier. He was raised and attended school in Fort Yates. After his graduation from Fort Yates High School in 1948, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He then attended Bismarck Junior College. On June 5, 1955, he married Marilyn Otis in Bismarck. They lived in Bismarck, where they founded Del-Mar Vending. He retired in 1981. They divided their time between Lake Isabel and Texas. Marilyn died April 16, 1990. Del married Eleanor Stearns, June 18, 1994, in Bismarck.
Del enjoyed singing with the Elks Chorus.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Mary, and David and Geraldine, all of Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Lyn and Lindsay Keller, Atlanta, Ga.; six grandchildren, Jason and Joel Maier, Mike and Melissa Maier, and Emily and Kurt Keller; and his father-in-law, Forest Otis, Bismarck.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marilyn; and his mother-in-law, Mina Otis.
Jacob Schwartz
Jacob Schwartz, 84, Dawson, died May 14, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Dawson Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Sharon Kapsch officiating. Burial will be in Dawson Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Jacob was born June 30, 1912, in the Streeter area, the son of Paul and Katherine (Knell) Schwartz. He grew up on the family farm and received his elementary education in rural Logan County schools. Jake married Bertha Schauer, July 3, 1938, in Dawson. They lived in the Napoleon area until 1945, where they engaged in farming. They moved to Dawson in November 1945, where Jake went to work for Northern Pacific Railroad as a coal dock foreman. In 1960 the family moved to Bismarck where Jake continued to work for the railroad until his retirement in 1976. They returned to Dawson in 1976.
He was a member of Dawson Lutheran Church and a life member of Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees. Jake enjoyed spending time at his Lake Isabel cabin.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha; four daughters and sons-in-law, Denise and Duane Fuhrman, Jacksonville, Ark., Dorothy and Arland Grunseth, Bismarck, Calista and Vern Bahm, rural Mandan, and Lois and Richard Lawson, Rapid City, S.D.; one son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Pam, Mandan; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Albert, Lake Tahoe, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters; and five brothers.
Christine Johnson
Christine D. Johnson, 86, formerly of 530 E. Capitol Lane, died May 14, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Evangel Temple, Bismarck, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Christine was born April 26, 1911, in McIntosh, Minn., the daughter of Odwin and Sina (Brovold) Johnson. When she was 10 years old the family moved to Barwick, Ontario, Canada, where she grew up and received her formal education. She attended LIFE Bible College in Los Angeles, graduating in June 1932. In 1934, she was ordained to full time ministry by the Assemblies of God. She traveled for several years in Canada and the United States in a gospel trio, ministry in song and word. She was assistant pastor and part-time bookkeeper in Dickinson before accepting the position of administrator of Friendship Manor Nursing Home in McVille in 1966. She continued there until she retired in August 1981. In 1984 she moved to Bismarck.
Christine was a member of Evangel Temple in Bismarck.
She is survived by two sisters, Ruth O. Johnson, Bismarck, and Marvel Burwick, Bismarck; one brother, Arnold C., Missoula, Mont.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Howard and Orville.
Frank Meduna
DICKINSON -- Frank Meduna, 84, Dickinson, died May 13, 1997, in a Minot nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDE Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.
He is survived by two daughters, Marjorie Ramsay, Minot, and Bernice Obrigewitch, Bismarck; and one sister, Beatrice Bren, Dickinson. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)
Mary Kappel
DICKINSON -- Mary Kappel, 103, Dickinson, died May 13, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Friday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Dickinson.
She is survived by seven sons, George Schroeder, Hebron, William Kappel, Puyallup, Wash., Joe Kappel, Dickinson, Peter Kappel, White Bear Lake, Minn., Herbert and Frank Kappel, both of Fargo, and Richard Kappel, Dickinson; two daughters, Catherine Beline, Canada, and Jean Haldeman, Yakima, Wash.; and one sister, Theresa Schneider, Sacramento, Calif. Josephine Berger

Mildred Shepherd
WISHEK -- Mildred "Millie" Leona Shepherd, 96, Wishek, died May 15, 1997, in the Wishek nursing home. Services will be held at 11-30 a.m. Saturday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, with the Rev. Marty Toepke-Floyd officiating. Special music will be provided by the Toepke-Floyd, with organ music provided by Arlys Ackerman. Graveside services will be held Tuesday in Millington-Newark Cemetery, Newark, Ill.
Pallbearers are all family and friends.
Visitation will be form 1 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Millie was born Oct. 23, 1900, in Kendall County, near Helmar, Ill., the daughter of Peter and Malinda (Anderson) Larson. She was raised on the family farm until her father's death in 1908. The family then moved to Newark, Ill. Millie received her education in Newark Public Schools, graduating from Newark High School. She went on to attend a teachers college and receive her teaching certificate. Millie then taught for several years near Dixon, Ill. On Dec. 31, 1928, Millie was married to Wilbur "Bud" Shepherd, at Newark. They moved to the family farm near Helmar and she taught in Newark area schools. They later moved to Newark where Millie continued to teach for many years. Mr. Shepherd preceded her in death in 1962. She retired from teaching in Newark and moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., where she began teaching at near by Falcon, Colo. until her retirement.
Millie then began to pursue hobbies of acrylic painting and going to craft shows to sell her projects, as well as playing bridge and reading. Due to her poor health, Millie moved to Napoleon in the fall of 1994 and became a resident of Wishek Nursing Home in December 1994.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Arnold Regner Jr., Napoleon; one son and daughter-in-law, Sheldon and Gail, West Pueblo, Colo.; three grandchildren, Kirk Shepherd, and Spencer, and his wife Debbie Shepherd, all of Denver, and Jackie and her husband Dallas Bakken, Napoleon; and one great-grandson, Drew Bakken.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother; and four sisters.

Eva Kleih
NEW SALEM -- Eva B. Kleih, 95, New Salem, died May 15, 1997, in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at Peace Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Richard Herb officiating. Burial will be in Peace Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. today at Elm Crest Nursing Home, New Salem, and after 2 p.m. Friday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church.
Eva Toepke was born Feb. 27, 1902, near Judson, the daughter of Frank and Elise (Wildi) Toepke. She attended country school and one year of high school in Mandan. She married Christ Kleih, June 29, 1920. They made their home on a farm southeast of New Salem until 1970 when they moved to their house in New Salem. Christ died Aug. 21, 1975. Eva continued to live in her own home until May 1996 when she became a resident of Elm Crest Nursing Home.
An independent and determined lady, Eva will be missed by many, including four daughters and three sons-in-law, Audrey and Carl Ecklund, Bismarck, Donna Heid, Arlene and Warren Rusch, and Joyce and Marvin Held, all of New Salem; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four step-grandchildren; 10 great-stepgrandchildren; five great-great-stepgrandchildren; one brother, Archie "Butch" Toepke, New Salem; two sisters, Grace Nickle, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Estelle McHenry, New Salem.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one granddaughter; one son-in-law; one brother; and two sisters.
Minnie Olson

Colleen Fike
CHASELEY -- Colleen Fike, 50, Chaseley, died May 14, 1997, in the Carrington hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bowdon Lutheran Church, with burial in Chaseley Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Colleen Hart, daughter of Orval and Alyce Hart, was born April 26, 1947, at Bismarck. She grew up on her parents farm south of Chaseley and attended Chaseley Public School through the eighth grade. She received her high school education in Bowdon and graduated in 1965. She then enrolled in Town and Country Beauty College in Jamestown, graduating in 1966. She was employed as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone Co. in Bismarck from 1966 to 1969. On Oct. 11, 1969, she was married to Leonard Fike at Chaseley, where they made their home and farmed. In 1979 they moved to a farm south of Chaseley where they continued farming and have made their home since.
She was a member of United Methodist Church and Ladies Aid of Chaseley. She was also a teachers aide and bus driver for Bowdon Public Schools for several years.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard; one daughter, Roxanne Fike, Chaseley; one son, Troy, Bowdon; her parents, Orval and Alyce Hart, Chaseley; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Nathan and Beverly Hart, and Kim and Laura Hart, all of Chaseley; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janell and Roger Krueger, Bremen, and Julie and Brett Schutte, Mitchell, S.D.; her grandmother, Lynn Moug, Carrington; and several nieces and nephews.
Forest Otis
Forest P. Otis, 91, 1000 W. Highland Acres Road, died May 14, 1997, in his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Mark A. Bayert officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Forest was born July 17, 1905, in Langford, S.D., the son of Frank J. and Maggie (Puntine) Otis. He was raised and attended schools in Langford, and also attended the University of Minnesota. Forest moved to Fort Yates in 1929, and married Mina Havekorst, Oct. 7, 1931. They lived in Fort Yates until moving to Cannon Ball in 1934. Forest and Mina owned Otis Store for 30 years. They sold the store and moved to Bismarck in 1965. Forest and Mina were fortunate enough to be able to live as neighbors with their daughter and her family for 35 years. During the winter months, Forest and Mina enjoyed traveling in the Airstream trailer. In later years, while wintering in Harlingen, Texas, Forest enjoyed teaching woodcarving classes and spending time visiting with people.
He is survived by two grandsons, Robert Maier and his wife, Mary, Bismarck, and David Maier and his wife Geri, Bismarck; one granddaughter, Lyn Keller and her husband, Lindsay, Atlanta, Ga.; six great-grandchildren, Michael and Melissa Maier, and Jason and Joel Maier, all of Bismarck, and Emily and Kurt Keller, Atlanta.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Del Maier; and one sister.
