Yvonne Glatt
Yvonne J. Glatt, 54, 2895 Warwick Loop, Bismarck, died Oct. 4, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital, after a battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Hazelton, with the Rev. Jeffrey Zwack officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Yvonne Joyce Glatt was born July 8, 1943 at Richardton, the daughter of Adolph and Esther (Koehler) Kisse. She attended school at Halliday and graduated from Halliday High School in 1960. Yvonne moved to Bismarck and worked at St. Alexius Hospital as a nurses aide. She loved working closely with patients and found gratification in seeing someone smile. She received her certification as an Operating Room Technician at St. Alexius.

While working in surgery, she met and later on Oct. 16, 1965 married Myron Glatt at Napoleon. They made their home in Bismarck, and spent many years working together sharing memories and making life-long friendships. In 1979 she accepted a position at the Ellingson Eye Clinic where she assisted F.T. Ellingson until his retirement in 1991. She worked with her husband in the restaurant business until his illness in 1993. She cared for and helped him through his battle with cancer until his death on Oct. 3, 1993. Yvonne re-entered the work force and joined the staff at the Eye Clinic of North Dakota working with Dr. Henry Reichert where she was currently employed.

Yvonne had a compassion for people which showed in her personal and professional relationships. She touched the lives of many and was a great friend. She accepted her illness with courage, grace and dignity and lived every day to the fullest.

Grateful to have shared her life are her son, Steven, Tempe, Ariz.; her daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Bruce Doolittle, Hazelton; one granddaughter, Devin Doolittle; one grandson, Dillion Doolittle; her mother, Esther Kisse, Halliday; a special friend, Ken Heier, Bismarck; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Adolph and Marilyn Kisse Jr., Richardton, and Jim Kisse, Mott; and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Della and Willie Schaper, Beulah, Bernice Fredericks, Castle Rock, Colo., and Linda and Keith Perhus, Marshall.

In addition to her husband, Yvonne was preceded in death by her father.

John Lawlor
John Joseph Lawlor, 81, 1128 N. 28th St., died Oct. 1, 1997, in his home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, where military rites will be provided by Bismarck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326.

John was born Nov. 12, 1915, in Devils Lake, the son of Thomas and Margaret (McCrae) Lawlor. His family lived in Carrington where John graduated from Carrington High School. He then attended mortuary school in St. Louis. John moved to Bismarck and worked for the Calnan Mortuary. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a pharmacists mate in the European Theater. While there he participated in the D-Day Invasion. John married Cleo Evans, July 16, 1945, in Bismarck. He worked as a deputy sheriff in Burleigh County and also served as bailiff with the Honorable Judge George Register in the Federal Court System. John worked at Melroe before returning to funeral service, when he began working at Perry Funeral Home, continuing with Eastgate Funeral Service. John was recently honored by the North Dakota Funeral Director Association for serving his community and profession for over 50 years.

He was also very involved in assisting at Marillac Manor. John wore many hats in life and one, in particular, of being kind and helpful to his family, friends, neighbors or anyone who could use a helping hand.

He is survived by his wife, Cleo; one son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Penney, San Diego, Calif.; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Mary and George Dinyer, and Joan and Robert Nordstrom, all of Bismarck, Nancy and David Snider, Littleton, Colo., and Diane, Bismarck; seven grandchildren, Keir Roper, Todd Holdren, Christopher and Lindsey Lawlor, Laura and Garrett Dinyer, and Jill Snider; his twin sister, Mary Fedje, Portland; and one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Peggy, Union, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; one sister; and his daughter, Susan.

Jean Knowlen
HEBRON -- Jean (Burtts) Knowlen, 62, Hebron, died Oct. 2, 1997, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Glencoe Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Glencoe Presbyterian Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, at Dakota Memorial Chapel, Bismarck, and will continue one hour prior to services, at the church.

Jean Burtts (a second born twin) to Charles Hubert Burtts and Shirley Eleanor Suverly in Emmons County. Jean attended school in Bismarck. She married Lowell Russell Knowlen Sr. Jan 12, 1952. During Jean's 45 years of marriage she was able to travel to 42 states with her beloved husband, Lowell. Loving travel, they lived in many different parts of the United States.

Jean, who was known for her kindness and compassion to anyone, was also an excellent wife and caring mother. Jean's favorite hobby was music. She was an excellent singer. She wrote and sang many of her own songs all of her life. Jean also enjoyed boating, driving all kinds of vehicles, and traveling to different parts of the country to see the beauty of God's handiwork. God had been a major part of her life, especially since her baptism into the Worldwide Church of God on March 16, 1985.

In her later years, Jean worked with her husband in the recycling business, and also the fur business. During this time, she also drove truck and operated forklifts and other vehicles.

She is survived by her husband, Lowell; three sons, Lowell Jr., Delbert, and Hank; four daughters, Colleen Clooten, Susan Glass, Jean Walton and Rebecca Knowlen; 14 grandchildren, David, Amanda, Lorene, Phillip and Matthew Knowlen, Michael and Wendy Clooten, Monica Knowlen, Chastity, Fawn and Forrest Glass, and Breanna and Amberly Walton; three brothers, Joe Fogarty, Newburg, Ore., Clarence Burtts, Linton, and Bill Burtts, Hazelton; and five sisters, Ruth Snyder, Newburg, Violet Clooten, Bismarck, Harriet Schantz, Yakima, Wash., Arlene Auch, Grangeville, Calif., and Judy Bailey, Mandan.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, and the following brothers and sisters, George Burtts, Eleanor Fogarty, Lorraine Clooten, Charles H. Burtts, Joan Knowlen, Maynard Burtts and David Burtts.

Raymond Couch
BALDWIN -- Raymond F. Couch, 78, Baldwin, died Oct. 6, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Boelter Funeral Home Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steven Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Baldwin Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. Wednesday until the service, at the funeral home.

Ray was born May 11, 1919, at his parents farm east of Baldwin, the son of Van and Alice (Parsons) Couch. He attended area schools and remained at home to help his parents with farming operations until 1942, when he moved to Bismarck. He married Laverne Clooten in Bismarck in 1942.

Except for a time during World War II, when he was employed in the shipyards at Richmond, Calif., he worked as an auto mechanic in the Bismarck area. In 1954, he joined the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union and was employed at this trade until his retirement in 1981. While following his trade, he traveled over a wide area of the upper Midwest to the various construction sites where he was employed.

Ray was a descendant of very early Burleigh County pioneering stock as his paternal grandfather, William B. Couch, homesteaded approximately 10 miles north of Bismarck in 1883. His maternal grandfather was Joseph R. Parsons who filed a claim on a homestead east of Baldwin in 1901.

He was a member of Mandan Moose Lodge No. 425.

He is survived by one son, Robert, Kramer; one sister, Irene Jarnigin, Ashford, Wash.; three grandchildren, Connie Couch, Allen Couch, and Kelly Hochhalter; and one great-grandson, Tylan Hochhalter, all of the Bismarck-Mandan area.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.

Martha Jenner
TUTTLE -- Martha Jenner, 79, rural Tuttle, died Oct. 5, 1997, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at English Lutheran Church, Tuttle. Burial will be in Tuttle Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Martha was born Sept. 19, 1918, at Grassy Butte, to Warfolomay and Katherine (Schbatum) Kalinchenko. She grew up and attended rural school in McKenzie County. She was working at White Star Cafe in Mandan when she met Theodore Jenner. They were married Dec. 5, 1940 in Mandan. They moved to the Jenner Family farm northeast of Tuttle. He died June 29, 1969. Martha continued to live on the family farm.

She was a member of English Lutheran Church and its ladies aid of Tuttle, and North Kidder Farmerettes Homemakers Club. She was an avid crocheter, and during the winter months a rug loom was ever present in her living room. She was an excellent gardener, enjoyed canning and loved animals. In her earlier years, she was an avid horseback rider. To her family, she was the kind of mother everybody wished to have and whom were fortunate enough to have.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Jan, Tuttle; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Greg Paluck, Williston; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, LeRoy; one daughter, Phyllis; one sister, Mary; and three brothers, Matthew, Gene and David.

Alvina Hoff
BOWDON -- Alvina Hoff, 69, Bowdon, died Oct. 5, 1997, in the Carrington hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Bowdon Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Wayside Cemetery, Bowdon.

She is survived by her husband, Clifford; one daughter, Irene Hoff, Bismarck; two sons, Allen, Bowdon, and Darrin, Carrington; four brothers, Johnny Neumiller, Carrington, Lawrence Neumiller, Jamestown, Clarence Neumiller, Vancouver, Wash., and Jacob Neumiller, Oak Harbor, Wash.; and six sisters, Lydia Morlock, Frieda Watson, Iola Rask, Elsie Schock and Bertha Huss, all of Carrington, and Alice Reidel, Parkers Prairie, Minn. (Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden)

Sylvia Lahtinen
NEW TOWN -- Sylvia Lahtinen, 78, New Town, died Oct. 2, 1997, in a Minot hospital. Services were held Oct. 6, at Bethel Lutheran Church, New Town, with burial in New Town Cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters, Carmen McGrady, New Town, and Debra Lahtinen, Grafton; three sons, Gary and Warren, both of New Town, and Jeff, Watertown, Minn.; one brother, Urho Tiisto, Bismarck; and three sisters, Nelmi Korhonen, Kelly Lake, Minn., Elaine LaRock, New Town, and Diane Arndt, Stanley. George Merkel
McINTOSH, S.D. -- George W. Merkel, 81, McIntosh, died Oct. 5, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. MDT Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, McIntosh. Burial will be at 3 p.m. MDT Thursday at Black Hills National Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; one son, Gary, McIntosh; one daughter, Jayne Huber, McIntosh; and one brother, Herbert, Piedmont, S.D.. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Lemmon, S.D.)

Clarence Nelson
MADDOCK -- Clarence Nelson, 79, rural Maddock, died Oct. 5, 1997, in the Carrington hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Klara Lutheran Church, rural Heimdal. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; and one son Gary, Hamberg. (Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden)

John Chapin
MAKOTI -- John Chapin, 79, Makoti, died Oct. 5, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Keene. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery, Keene.

He is survived by two brothers, Bennie, Watford City, and Robert, Keene; and two sisters, Joyce Wells, Stephensville, Texas, and Bertha Till, Chadron, Neb. (Johnson Funeral Home, New Town)

Anna Zabolotny
KILLDEER -- Anna Zabolotny, 75, Killdeer, died Oct. 5, 1997, in a Killdeer nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Killdeer. Further arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Earl Myers Jr.
CENTER -- Earl D. Myers Jr., 35, Center, died Oct. 6, 1997, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Arrangements are pending with Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Fred Halvorson
DEVILS LAKE -- Fred Halvorson, 90, Devils Lake, formerly of Minnewaukan, died Oct. 6, 1997, in a Devils Lake hospital. Arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Minnewaukan.

Ted Vander Vorste
Ted Vander Vorste, 82, Pollock, S.D., died Oct. 6, 1997, in a Mobridge, S.D. nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

Earl D. Myers Jr.
CENTER -- Earl D. Myers, Jr., 35, Center, died Oct. 5, 1997, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Services will be held at 2 p.m. CDT Friday, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Center, with the Rev. Glenn Berge officiating. Burial will be in the Center Community Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, and will continue from 9 a.m. Friday until the time of service.

Earl was born Jan. 2, 1962, in Pierre, S.D., the son of Earl D. Myers Sr. and Mary May (Radmer) Myers. He was raised and educated at Center. In 1980, he received his diploma in Philadelphia, Penn. He served in the Army National Guard and the Navy. Earl married Patricia Johnston on Dec. 29, 1983, in Center where he farmed and worked for Oliver County driving dump trucks. In 1984, they moved to Memphis, Tenn., where he attended State Center for one year. He worked as an automotive technician for Bill and Jim's Gulf/BP for 10 years. He owned and operated Earl's Automotive Service Yard along with his wife for two years prior to returning to North Dakota in 1995. For the next year and a half, he was employed at Kirkwood Amoco in Bismarck, and at the time of his death, he was employed with Firestone in Bismarck. He also worked for the Bismarck Tribune as an independent bundler/hauler/carrier.

He was a member of the Bismarck Moose Club and the American Rifle Association.

He was an exceptionally loving son, brother, husband and father. Earl loved his children, who meant the world to him. He was a true friend to all who knew him and he always extended a helping hand to his family and friends. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards; but his joy was his profession, tinkering on any vehicle. He brought so much laughter and good heartedness to this world. He will be forever deeply missed and placed high above the clouds to watch over us all.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; three daughters, Amanda, Carrie and Darla; one son, Howard; and his mother, Mary, all of Center; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Larry, Hebron, Roy and Janece, Mandan, and Jerry and Annette, Sturgis, S.D.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathy and Harvey Rogers, New York Mills, Minn., and Gail and Quency Simon, New Rockford; his paternal grandmother, Ada Myers, Center; nine nieces; and five nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Earl, Sr.; his paternal grandfather, Howard Myers; and his maternal grandparents, Magnolia and Henry Radmer.

Phyllis Smith
LINTON -- Phyllis Smith, 77, Sacramento, Calif., died Sept. 26, 1997, at her home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at Myers Funeral Home Chapel, Linton. Burial will be in Linton Cemetery.

She is survived by one brother, Darwin Dockter, Pengilly, Minn.

Francis Grenz
Francis "Gene" Grenz, 73, Bismarck, died Oct. 6, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, at Bismarck Funeral Home. The Rev. Joel Sherer will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck, with military rites by VFW Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will resume one hour prior to services.

Gene was born Oct. 13, 1923, in Braddock to Albert and Esther (Sawer) Grenz. He was educated in Temvik, and after graduating, Gene worked for area farmers. Gene served in the United States Navy from 1944-1947, receiving a victory medal for World War II. He returned to North Dakota and worked on farms in the Linton area.

In 1948, Gene was united in marriage to Eunice Heer in Linton. Gene farmed for Eunice's uncle until that September, when they moved to Bismarck. Gene went to work for Bismarck Lumber for 15 years. In 1957, he joined Ron Brown Furniture, where he was employed until his retirement.

Gene spent his retirement fishing and hunting. He also loved to do yard work and to garden. He was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge.

Gene is survived by his wife, Eunice; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda and Norman Parsons, Bismarck, Billie Lapp, Rockford, Ill., Connie and Dwight Barden, Bismarck; three grandsons, Kelly Jensen, and Nicholas and Adam Barden; three granddaughters, Stacy and Sara Lipp, and Corie Colter; one great-grandson, Zachary Colter; one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Irene, Milwaukee, Wis., and four sisters and one brother-in-law, Delyghte and Jake Haid, Linton, Ruby Ruth Renskers, Washington State, Joy Popjoy, San Pedro, Calif., and Vera Parsons, Erving, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews with special mention of Terry Grenz who lived with uncle Gene.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
