Carrie Steingrueber
Caroline Steingrueber, 100, of the Marian Manor Healthcare Center, Glen Ullin, formerly of Hebron, died Friday, December 28, 2007 at the Marian Manor.
Her funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 31 at the St. John Church, Hebron, with the Reverend Gaylund Olson, officiating.
Burial was in the St. John Cemetery in Hebron.
Caroline was born April 3, 1907 on the ship coming to America, the daughter of Jacob and Caroline (Kirchman) Merkel.
They settled in the Hazelton area where she was raised and educated. Her mother died young and as she was the oldest, she cared for her younger siblings.
Her father sent her to work in Hebron at the Culeman Store where she met George Steingrueber. They were married February 19, 1928 at the St. John Church in Hebron.
Following their marriage they farmed for several years and then rented the farm out and moved to Washington where they owned a business.
In 1936 they returned to the farm near Hebron which they operated until 1952, when they moved into town.
Caroline was a member of the St. John Church, the Women's Guild, the Lookout Homemakers for over 30 years and the Brick City Senior Citizens.
She enjoyed visiting, quilting, crocheting, cards, sewing, baking and music.
Caroline is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Leo and Lorrain, Hebron and her daughter and son-in-law, Erma and Ray Klein, Hebron.
She leaves eight grandchildren - Terry (Darlene) Steingrueber, Vicki (Keith) Sass, Scott (Sue) Steingrueber, Nancy Steingrueber, David (Connie) Klein, Jackie (Ryan) Lefor, Jocie Klein and Dale Klein and 13 great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and three step great-great grandchildren.
She also leaves three half brothers - Herman and Art Merkel, both of Bismarck, ND and Louis Merkel, Rapid City, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant sons, her husband in October of 1983 and three brothers, three sisters, two half sisters, two step-brothers and a step sister.
Emil Krein
Emil Krein, 99, Hebron, ND, died Friday, December 28, 2007 at the Richardton Health Center, Richardton, ND.
Emil’s funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Monday, December 31, 2007 at the First Baptist Church, Hebron, with Rev. David Ling officiating. Interment followed at the First Baptist Cemetery, Hebron.
Emil Krein was born August 20, 1908 at Antelope, ND, the son of Jacob and Sophia (Wiege) Krein. He was raised and educated in the Antelope area.
Emil farmed with his parents while his brothers, Henry and Ted were in the military. He then farmed with his brother Henry until the early 1960’s when he moved to Hebron to care for his ailing father.
During this time Emil traveled the countryside selling Rawleigh products. He enjoyed this very much because of the new friendships he gained along the way.
Emil loved to go fishing with his brothers and also did some hunting and trapping with them. Emil made Hebron his home until he entered the Richardton Health Center in 2001. He was treated like family by the staff and received excellent care while a resident there.
Emil was a gentle, kind and loving man with a great sense of humor.
Emil is survived by his nieces, Alma (Leonard) Heid, New Salem, ND, Judy Johnk, Jamestown, ND and Patti Conlon, Dickinson; his nephews, Tom (Judy) Creviston, Franktown, CO, Frank (Dianne) Conlon, Jamestown and Tim Creviston, Scottsdale, AZ and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Henry and Ted and two sisters, Anna Conlon and Adeline Creviston.
Arrangements were by Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.
Isabel Rebel
Isabel Rebel, 66, Hebron, died Saturday, July 5, 2008 at St. Alexius Medical Center surrounded by her family.
Her long battle with cancer had finally taken its toll.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. CT at St. John Church in Hebron Wednesday, July 9, with the Reverend Gaylund Olson, officiating.
Visitation will be held at Spangelo Funeral Home in Hebron Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Visitation will continue Wednesday one hour prior to the funeral service at church. Burial will be held in the St. John Cemetery in Hebron
Isabel was born in Mercer County, June 4, 1942, the daughter of Kenneth and Lydia (Huber) Elder. She was raised on the farm and was educated in the Hebron Schools. She graduated from the Hebron High School in 1960.
She married Richard Rebel February 4, 1961 at St. John Lutheran Church in Richardton. Following their marriage they lived in Hebron where Isabel was a devoted housewife and mother.
When her children were all in school, Isabel worked outside the home, at a restaurant and later for Hebron Brick Company.
When she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, she retired.
She enjoyed her grandchildren, reading, baking and trying new recipes. She enjoyed her flowers and doing word search puzzles.
She was a member of the St. John Church in Hebron and the Women’s Guild.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her husband Richard, Hebron, ND; her children Gary, Steele, ND; Laura (Marv) Messer, Richardton, ND; Chad (Stacey) Rebel, Hebron, ND and Janell (Darren) Hellman, Glen Ullin, ND.
She leaves her grandchildren - Emilee and McKenzie Rebel, Cody, Tyrel and Dylan Rebel, Wade and Thomas Messer, Samantha, Chandra and Roxanna Hellman and a great grand daughter, Brynn Rebel.
She also leaves two brothers - Clarence (Sylvia) Elder and Gary (Paulette) Elder, all of Hebron and a sister, Arlene (Vernon) Stading, Minot, ND and a sister-in-law, Alma Elder, Hebron, ND.
Preceding her in death were her parents, a daughter, Roxanne, and a brother, Alfred.
Edmund Quintus
Edmund Quintus, 89, New Salem and formerly of Hebron, died Thursday, June 26, 2008 in New Salem at the home of his brother and sister-in-law, Wilfred and Mary Quintus following complications associated with bladder cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. CT at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Hebron.
Visitation will begin Tuesday after 4:00 p.m. at the church with vigil services at 7:00 p.m. CT.
Burial will be in the St. Ann’s Cemetery in Hebron with military honors by the Henry Biffert Post #100 of the American Legion.
Edmund was born in the Haymarsh area April 12, 1919, the son of Anton and Mathilda (Wehri) Quintus. He was raised on the family farm and educated at St. Clement’s School.
Ed was inducted into the US Army March 20, 1942 and trained at Camp Barkeley, TX. He was a member of the 90th TO Infantry Division and was in on the second wave of the army’s invasion on the Normandy beaches, D-Day in June of 1944.
He fought in the European theatre of war the rest of that year and into the winter months and the following spring. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for valor on the battle field.
Following his discharge October 4, 1945, Ed returned to the Haymarsh area and farmed on the family farm with his dad and his brother Norbert. He would later be in partnership farming with his brother Wilfred, who also resided on the family farm.
On November 25, 1978 Ed married Claribel Viestenz at Jamestown. Following their marriage they lived in Hebron.
Ed was active in the American Legion of Hebron, Brick City Senior Citizens and was a Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by one-step daughter, Virginia Eastley, Alexandria, MN and one-step son, Stan Viestenz, Fargo, ND.
Ed leaves four-step grandchildren - Shawn Eastley, Rebecca McAtee, Tracy Potrzebowski and Dan Ahlers and is survived by two sisters, Sr. Marcine Quintus, OSB, Yankton, SD and Lucille (Leo) Skalsky, Dickinson, ND as well as two brothers, Norbert (Veronica) Quintus, Bismarck, ND and Wilfred (Mary) Quintus, New Salem, ND.
Other survivors include several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, step-daughter Elaine and a sister, Sr. Anthony Quintus, OSB.
Spangelo Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Donald Herbel
Donald Herbel, 78, Bismarck, died peacefully July 3, 2008, at his home. A services was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Paul Becker officiating. Burial was in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with military honors by VFW Post No. 1326.
Don was born March 29, 1930, near Alsen, to Reinhart and Mary (Klein) Herbel. He attended school at Alsen and graduated from Munich High School. He joined the U.S. Air Force and served his country from 1951 to 1955. Don then attended Bottineau State, Minot State, Mayville State, NDSU and UND. He received a BS degree with majors in math, social studies and physical education and an MA degree in educational administration. On Aug. 20, 1957, Don married Pat (Kerian) Herbel at Minto.
A lifetime educator, Don taught in Norma, Bisbee, Rock Lake, Leeds, Hebron and Midway. He served as superintendent of schools at Rock Lake, Hebron and Midway. Don and Pat retired to their home in Bismarck and cabin at Little Knife near New Town, and he continued to enjoy fishing and hunting with his faithful dog, Gunner. Known for his sparkling eyes and laughter, he shared stories, good food and favorite songs while visiting with friends and family.
Family and friends were the center of Don's life. He loved his wife, Pat, and six children, Denise (Fred) Krefting, Waukee, Iowa, Bryon Herbel, Raleigh, N.C., Jo (Bill) Wyeth, Silver Spring, Md., Julie (Don) Vetsch, New Town, Keri (Tom) Erickson, Osage, Iowa, and Donna Herbel, Madison, Wis. Don's life also revolved around his grandchildren, Kevin and Jessica Krefting, Johnathan (Nicolette) Bergquist, Kia and Heather Herbel, Krista Erickson and Jamie and Kenny Vetsch. Don is also survived by eight sisters and brothers and one sister-in-law, Dellas (Betty), Bottineau, LaVern (Ed) Grossman, Grand Forks, Elroy, Elgin, Vernon (Grace), Grafton, Lorraine (Les) Christian, Bottineau, Marion Albrecht, Munich, Gil (Elna Mae), Grafton, Ray (Carla), Mapleton, and Corrine Herbel, Bottineau.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Iris (Syl) Severson, Minot; his brother, Marvin, Bottineau; his sister-in-law, Jo, Elgin; and his brother-in-law, Bob Albrecht, Alsen.
Memorials may be made to Camp Grassick, American Heart Association or God's Child Project.
Lorraine Benike
Lorraine Margaret Saxowsky Benike died Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at her home at Courtyard at Jamestown in Provo, UT.
She was 88 years of age and died peacefully. Her family mourns her passing but knows that she is happily rejoined with her loving husband, Harland Robert Benike, who died 31 years ago.
She was born and raised in the small farming town of Hebron, ND. She graduated from Kahler Nursing School in Rochester, MN in 1942; met the love of her life, Harland Robert Benike, while living in Rochester and married him in 1943. While Harland served in the US Army during WWII she worked at the Mayo Clinic. They were reunited in 1946 at the end of the war.
Moving to St. Paul, MN, Harland graduated from the University of Minnesota in electrical engineering and they had their two daughters, Cheryl and Barbara.
They lived in St. Paul until 1954 when a job transfer took the family to sunny Southern California. They purchased a comfortable home in Santa Ana nestled among the orange groves so plentiful during those years.
The family lived happily in their Santa Ana home for 24 years when, in 1977, Harland died. Lorraine continued living in that home until she was 80 years old.
Both Lorraine and Harland had been raised in the Protestant faith in North Dakota and Minnesota. The Benike family was active in the Lutheran or Episcopalian congregations for years.
When their oldest daughter, Cheryl, attended BYU, she brought back the message of the gospel and the entire Benike family was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and married in the Los Angeles Temple. Both daughters graduated from BYU and were also married in the LA Temple.
She moved to Jamestown Manor in Provo, UT six years ago. She was surrounded by a number of family members – her two daughters, their husbands and five of her six grandchildren lived nearby.
Lorraine enjoyed oil painting, sewing, knitting, crocheting and cooking. She loved laughter, chocolate and being with her family. Dignified, hardworking, stoic and very private describe her personality. A mighty testimony of the Divinity of Jesus Christ was the mainstay of her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Nelson, Midway, UT; Barbara Horn, Provo and both of their respective husbands, Bob Nelson and Harrison Horn. She is survived by six grandchildren. Britta Nelson and Lisa Nelson, both live in SLC. Heather Stratton and her husband Barret; Summer Jones and her husband Brandon and Harrison C. Horn, her only grandson, all live in the Provo, Orem, Linden area. Juliet Wilson and her husband Sterling, reside in Menlo Park, CA. Her great grandchildren, Taggart and Beckham Wilson and Conner and Ava Stratton will miss her greatly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harland Robert Benike, her parents Marie and Henry Saxowsky and her siblings, Erwin and Henry Saxowsky and Marian Ranta.
A private family service was held May 31 at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home in Orem, UT. The dedication of her gravesite and interment was June 3 at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana, CA where she was laid to rest next to her husband.
