Mathias "Math" Schneider
NAPOLEON -- Mathias J. "Math" Schneider, 83, Napoleon, died Nov. 5, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10-30 a.m. Friday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. James Lauerman and Deacon Howard Hunkler officiating. Special music will be provided by Jim Olig, organist. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jay Schneider, Jeff Schneider, Jerry Schneider, Steve Johs, Darin Neugebauer, Brice Neugebauer, Bill Schneider, Perry Schneider, Cory Getz and Dana Jensen. Gift bearers for the service are Stephanie Johs, Danielle Johs and Ryan Getz. Jody Schneider, Jackie Schneider and Tessa Neugebauer will serve as readers.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon where a rosary will be said at 8 tonight. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.
Math was born May 12, 1913, at Strasburg, the son of John A. and Barbara (Fischer) Schneider. He moved with his parents to a farm west of Napoleon at the age of eight. Math received his elementary education in rural Logan County schools west of Napoleon. He continued to live at home and farm with his parents until 1928 when he started doing general work for William Kroeber. In 1935, Math started working for Walter Brown in the trucking business. On Nov. 9, 1937, Math was married to Agatha Hilzendeger at Napoleon. They lived in Napoleon for two years and then moved to a farm 10 miles northwest of Napoleon. In 1944, they purchased the Scherr-Borg farm six miles west and three miles north of Napoleon where they lived and farmed until May of 1970. They moved into Napoleon in 1970. On Sept. 1, 1970, Math was appointed Logan County Sheriff, an office he held for four terms. He then served four years as deputy sheriff, serving Logan County for 20 years. Mrs. Schneider preceded him in death on March 29, 1993.
He was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, St. Philip Neri Knights of Columbus, Napoleon Country Club, Napoleon Lion's Club and the North Dakota Peace Officer's Association. He was a charter member of Kintyre Credit Union and served on the Logan County ASCS Board for 12 years, also serving on the Sealy Township Board and the Sealy Township School Board. Math was a recipient of the Napoleon J.C. Outstanding Community Citizen Award and the Knight of the Year Award in 1979 from the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, James J. and Jane, Kintyre, Thomas and Marlys, and Steve and Mary, all of Bismarck; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lou and Tony Johs, and LoAnn and Dan Getz, all of Bismarck, Darlene and Bob Neugebauer, Menoken, Shirlene and Bob Jensen, Hazen; 25 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Christine and Martin Sperle, Ypsilanti, Mich.; and five brothers and sisters-in-law, Andrew and Sally, Napoleon, Leo and Gladys, Kintyre, Wilfred and Eldora, Turtle Lake, Felix and Patty, East Haven, Conn., and Bennie and Eleanor, Fargo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Agatha; one son, Alvin; his parents, John A. and Barbara Schneider; two brothers, John and Wendelin; and four sisters, Tillie Hilzendeger, Helen Lein, Hilda Schmitz and Eva Smith.
Raymond Anhorn
Raymond R. Anhorn, 69, Mandan, died Nov. 6, 1996, in the Glen Ullin nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Mark Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Friday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Raymond was born Nov. 7, 1926, in Glen Ullin, the son of Alfred and Anna (Mutschelknaus) Anhorn. He was raised and educated in the area and worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad before he entered the U.S. Army in 1945. After his discharge in November of 1946, he returned to the railroad where he worked as a brakeman and conductor until his retirement due to disability in 1971. He married Mildred Wetzel, Oct. 21, 1948.
He was a member of the American Legion and U.T.U. He was lovingly cared for by his wife until her death April 19, 1991. He then became a resident of Marian Manor Nursing Home in Glen Ullin. He enjoyed fishing, playing softball and bowling. After his illnes he always had candy to give to his friends and was known as the candy man at the nursing home.
Ray was loved and will be missed by his many friends and family members, including his son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Patricia, Mandan; three daughters and one son-in-law, Peggy Benz and Sandra Prudente, both of Mandan, and Carol and Gary Backman, Bismarck; nine grandchildren, Nicole, Cody, Stacy, Ivy, Tiffany, Courtney and John Jr., all of Mandan, and Travis and Michael, both of Bismarck; and one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Bob Senn, Mandan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two brothers.
The family wishes to thank the staffs of Marian Manor and St. Alexius Medical Center for the many kindnesses extended to Ray and his family.
Vera Falkenstein
Vera I. Falkenstein, 86, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, formerly of Wilton, died Nov. 5, 1996, in the nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sunne Lutheran Church, Wilton, with the Rev. Paul Schauer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Boelter Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Vera Fricke was born Aug. 22, 1910, near Baldwin, the daughter of William and Amelia (Rupp) Fricke. She was raised and educated in the Baldwin, Bismarck and Jamestown areas. She graduated from Jamestown High School. She attended Valley City State Teachers College and taught school in rural Eckland Township. She married Wallace Falkenstein, Oct. 31, 1929, in Bismarck. They farmed in the Wilton and Baldwin area. She was the Sunday school superintendent for 25 years, was a member of Sunne Lutheran Ladies Aid and Still Homemakers. She also was a 4-H leader.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Bernard and Alice, Wilton, Wayne and Joyce, Regan, and Larry and Betty, Wilton; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace, Nov. 24, 1995; her parents; one granddaughter, Judy Falkenstein, in 1976; one great-granddaughter, Kristen Falkenstein; two sisters, Alma and Liddy; and four brothers, William, Ernest, Arthur and Herbert.
Percy Anderson
Percy G. Anderson, 65, 715 N. 12th St., died Nov. 5, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Joel Sherer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Percy was born April 9, 1931, in Jamestown, the son of Henry and Gertrude (Hartmann) Anderson. He grew up in Dickinson and Mandan. Percy served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. He worked at Dahners and Singer Sewing Machines in Mandan. He married Irene Hollaar, April 20, 1956, in Mandan. While living in Bismarck, Percy worked for Albrechts Frozen Food and Grand Forks Grocery until his retirement in 1993. Percy enjoyed restoring furniture, gardening and visiting with people.
Family was very important to Percy. He took great pride in his three grandsons.
He is survived by his wife, Irene; one daughter and son-in-law, Georgene and Wally Seibel, Moffit; three grandsons, Walden Jr., Justin and Matthew; and one sister and brother-in-law, Erna and Curt Wagner, Mandan.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Amund Pederson
Amund Pederson, 88, Valley City, died Nov. 4, 1996, in the Valley City hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion Cemetery Association Church, rural Driscoll, with the Rev. Hensel Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel. Visitation also will be held at the church one hour before services.
Amund was born Jan. 24, 1908, at Marion, the son of Anton and Annie (Bakken) Pederson. He came to Driscoll in 1917, where he was raised and educated. The family moved to Valley City in 1934. Amund started farming with his brother Olaf that same year. They also raised registered Polled Herefords. Amund also restored antique cars and stationary engines. He enjoyed gardening, landscaping and playing horseshoes.
He is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Olga and Lars Storhaug, Steele; one brother and sister-in-law, Hans and Allene, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; three sisters; and two nephews.
Donald Gartner
Donald D. Gartner, 58, Huntington, Bensalem, Pa., formerly of Mandan, died Nov. 4, 1996, at his home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Rice.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish rosary will be said at 6:30 tonight, followed by a Moose ritual at 7, and a parish vigil at 7:30. Visitation will continue after 8:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Donald was born May 27, 1938, in Mandan, the son of John and Florence (Knoll) Gartner. Don was raised and educated in Mandan. He married Kathy Bender, May 25, 1979, in Mandan. They lived in Stanton for nine years, before moving to Philadelphia in 1986. Don worked for Iron Workers Local 793 in Philadelphia.
He was a member of Moose Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Lonnie, Plymouth, Minn., Tod and Veleeta, Golden Valley, Minn., and Donald Jr., Lancaster, Calif.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sharon and Rick Sailer, Blaine, Minn., Debbie and Carlyle Wiedrich, Langhorne, Pa., and Terry Gartner, Lancaster; 15 grandchildren; one brother, Duane, Bismarck; and two sisters, Irene Heck, Mandan, and Mary Darlene Kellems, Billings, Mont.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John Jr. and Richard; and one granddaughter, Cherish Sailer.
Thomas "Rusty" Whitearm
Thomas "Rusty" Whitearm, 67, Dover, Del., formerly of White Shield, died Oct. 31, 1996, of a terminal illness. A memorial service was held Nov. 2 at White Shield Complex, with the Rev. Gordon Brown of Bismarck officiating. Burial was in Dover.
Thomas was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. He had his own roofing and siding company.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margaret; one daughter, Kimberly Dawn, Dover; three sisters, Myrtle Goodleft, Bismarck, Arlene Gullickson, Lake Andes, S.D., and Cynthia Starr, Seattle; and his many friends, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Whitearm Sr., and his mother, Ruth Painte Taylor.
Craig Fredericks
TWIN BUTTES -- Craig Lawrence Fredericks, 25, Twin Buttes, died Nov. 5, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. CST Saturday at Twin Buttes Memorial Hall, with burial in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Twin Buttes.
A wake service will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at Twin Buttes Memorial Hall.
He is survived by one sister, Ronda Armstrong, Tampa, Fla.; and three brothers, Keith, George and Jeffrey, all of Grand Forks. (Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah)
William Keller
NEW ENGLAND -- William Keller, 77, New England, died Nov. 4, 1996, in the Hettinger nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST Friday at New England Assembly of God Church, with burial in Rainy Butte Cemetery, New England.

HALLIDAY -- Ardella Grosz, 61, formerly of Halliday, died Oct. 28, 1996. Private services will be held in Halliday.
She is survived by one sister, Sarah; and two brothers, James and Dennis.
Leona Allen
Leona E. Allen, 82, Detroit Lakes, Minn., died Nov. 5, 1996, in a Detroit Lakes nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, with burial in Cavalier Cemetery.
She is survived by three brothers, Cyril Schafer, Chicago, Leon, Gurnee, Ill., and Bob, Mandan; and one sister, Ivis DeMaine, White Bear Lake, Minn.
W.C. "Bill" Bement III
W.C. "Bill" Bement III, 70, 3007 Ontario Lane, died Nov. 5, 1996, in his home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with burial at 10 a.m. Tuesday in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending.
Olga Sailer

William "Bill"Bement
William Christian "Bill" Bement III, 70, 3007 Ontario Lane, died Nov. 5, 1996, in his home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by Bismarck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a rosary will be said at 6:30 tonight.
Bill was born April 13, 1926, in Redfield, S.D., the son of William H. and Clara (Satter) Bement. He was raised in Bismarck and attended St. Mary's Catholic School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Jan. 5, 1944, and served during World War II. He reached the rank of quarter master third class and served on the U.S.S. Colahan (DD658). Bill was in the Pacific Theater and had engaged in nine major battles, which took him to the Hawaiian Islands, Marshall Island, Guam, Ulithi, Palau, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Formosa and Japan. For his service, he was decorated with the Second Campaign Medal (7 stars), First American Theater (1 star), Third Philippine Liberation Medal (2 stars) and a World War II Victory Medal. Bill was a dedicated and patriotic citizen, proud to serve his country.
After the war, he returned to Bismarck and worked at Ward Motor Co. as a bookkeeper. He married Royann Small on July 9, 1947. Bill and Royann moved to Solen in 1954, where they raised their seven children on a cattle ranch until 1977. Bill then retired and moved to Bismarck. He was employed at the Elbow Room until his recent years.
Bill, known as "Big Bill" to many, will be remembered for his genuinely generous heart. He is a member of Bismarck Elks, VFW, American Legion, Amvets, AARP, 40 et 8 and the Eagles.
He is survived by his wife, Royann; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Bonnie Bement and Bill Kranz, Stillwater, Minn., Lottie and Mike Turman, and Jayne Bement and Ron Miller, all of Bismarck, and Jill Bement, St. Paul, Minn.; three sons and daughters-in-law, William R. IV and Debbie, Plymouth, Minn., Casey and Cindy, Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Kelly and Linda, Chippewa Falls, Wis.; 15 grandchildren, Charlie, Gwen and Abbey Gierke, Laura Boucher, Emily and Michael Turman, Amy Bement, Ben, Annie and Timmy Bement, Katie, Kristie and Casey Bement, B.J. Barker and Savannah and Hailey Miller; and two sisters, Barbara Colling and Joan Sisk; one brother, David; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Jack and Tom.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials.
George Anderson
George Ivar Anderson, 86, formerly of Mandan and Williston, died Nov. 1, 1996, in his daughter's home in Columbus, Ohio. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Mark Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at noon Sunday at the funeral home.
George was born Jan. 4, 1906, in Mandan, the son of Samuel and Thyra (Larson) Anderson. He was raised and educated in Mandan and received his degree in engineering from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. He married Mildred Dawson, April 11, 1948, in Mandan, where they lived until they moved to Williston in 1955. He was employed by the State Highway Department, retiring as a district engineer in 1975. Mildred died in June 1988. He moved to Columbus in 1990. George was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers and Cinephiles and a past member of the Williston Strings. He loved to play the violin since learning to play at the age of seven.
George is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Leonard Berglund Jr., Columbus; one son, Robert, Williston; two grandchildren, Leonard Berglund III and Genevieve Berglund, both of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his wife; and one sister, Alvera Anderson.
