Herbert Wolf
WISHEK -- Herbert Wolf, 68, Wishek, died March 5, 1997, in the Wishek hospital. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek, with burial in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, LaVern Wolf; one daughter, Susan Mack, St. Cloud, Minn.; two brothers, Alvin, Roseville, Calif., and Elton, Bismarck; and one sister, Rinelde Diede, Jamestown. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek)
Arthur Vollmer
Arthur ``Art" Vollmer, 78, Twin Falls, Idaho, died March 4, 1997, in a Boise, Idaho, hospital. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Twin Falls, with the Rev. Kendrick Gould officiating.
Art was born Aug. 14, 1918, in Washburn, the eighth of 11 children born to Fred and Emma (Kiemele) Vollmer of Washburn, where he grew up and was educated. He married Matilda Wageman, Nov. 19, 1938, in Bismarck. Art served in the South Pacific during World War II, and upon his discharge from the service in November 1945, he and Tillie settled in the Burley-Rupert, Idaho, area where he worked as a mechanic. In the summer of 1951 they moved to Twin Falls. Tillie died Nov. 6, 1996.
He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Denis and Charlene, Norman and Colleen, and Douglas and DeAnna, all of Twin Falls; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ardith ``Dolly" and Tom Tinker, Boise, and LaDena and Joe Brooks, Twin Falls; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Fred and Irven, both of Bismarck, and Reinhold, Seattle; and three sisters and one brother-in-law, Martha Roberts, Wing, Freda Melhoff, Tuttle, and Ann and Bill O'Brien, Renton, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, George; and one sister, Bertha Giedd.
The family suggests that memorials be given to the Boys and Girls Club of Magic Valley or to the charity of their choice.
Beatrice Schulz
Beatrice Schulz, 74, formerly of 208 Sixth Ave. S.W., Mandan, died March 6, 1997, in the Mandan nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of St. Joseph, Mandan, with the Rev. Robert E. Feeney officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Bible study rosary will be said at 7 tonight, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30.
Beatrice was born Nov. 26, 1922, in Minneapolis. She was the daughter of Louis and Sophie (Besser) Stein. She was raised and educated in Minneapolis, where she graduated from North High School. On Jan. 6, 1945, she married Elmer Schulz in Williamsburg, Va. Beatrice was employed as a telephone operator for AT&T and Western Electric in Minneapolis until 1948.
Beatrice volunteered for many hours in schools and churches in Mandan. She also was a lecturer at St. Joseph's.
She is survived by seven sons and three daughters-in-law, Stephen and Pam, Maplewood, Minn., James, Tempe, Ariz., David and Lori, Mandan, Thomas, and Robert and his friend, Melodie Kourajian, all of Bismarck, Ted and Becky, Plummer, Idaho, and Charles and his friend, Jackie Glaser, Fargo; three daughters and one son-in-law, Jean Schulz, Mandan, Jacqueline and Steven Smith, Shadyside, Md., and Julie Schulz and her friend, Bill Lynde, Tempe; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Agnes Johnson, St. Paul, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer, who died Nov. 25, 1996; three sisters; and one brother.
Rev. Stanislaus Duda
The Rev. Stanislaus J. Duda, 83, Bismarck, died March 7, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with Bishop James Sullivan of the Fargo Diocese officiating. Spring burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Anamoose.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, at the church, where a vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services, at the church.
He was born April 16, 1913 in Wyoming, Pa., the son of Konstanti and Frances (Michalik) Duda. He was raised and educated in Wyoming, Pa. where he graduated from high school.
Following his graduation, he attended St. Mary's College, and Saints Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake, Mich. He was ordained on May 30, 1942 at Fargo, by Cardinal Muench. He was the first ordained priest to come from St. Joseph's Parish in Wyoming, Pa., where he celebrated his first Mass.
Father Duda's first assignment was the assistant pastor at the Church of the Transfiguration in Edgeley, N.D. He then became pastor at the churches in Dickey and Berlin. Father Duda later went to St. Martin's in Geneseo, N.D., then St. Francis Xavier in Anamoose, where he built the current church. He then served at St. Anthony's Parish in Mooreton. From there he went to St. Stanislaus Parish in Warsaw, N.D., where he served for 17 years. During this time, a fire had destroyed the interior of the church. Father Duda was instrumental in the church's restoration. Afterwards the church, which is also known as "The Cathedral of the Prairie," was placed on the national and state historical registries. Due to poor health, Father Duda retired in 1993 and moved to Bismarck.
Father Duda was a great spiritual leader to people of all ages and faith. In addition to his priestly duties, he taught in public school, and coached football, baseball and basketball in various high schools. He was a referee for different sports and was well-known for his many talents, including electrical, carpentry, wood-crafting and photography. He enjoyed singing, having a fine tenor voice. He also played the clarinet, alto horn and the flute. As a priest, he always relished the joy of serving the people of the North Dakota prairie.
He is survived by one sister, Carol Wiack, Tom's River, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews including, Ed and Dolores Duda, Plymouth, Mich., Dr. Ted Wolodzko, Euclid, Ohio, Jane Niescier, Philadelphia, and Richard and Marie Wiack, Troy, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and 11 brothers and sisters.
In lieu of flowers, Father Duda preferred memorials to a scholarship fund in his name at Cardinal Muench Seminary in Fargo or to the Kidney Dialysis Center at St. Alexius Medical Center. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Velma Jerset
Velma Jerset, 61, Golden Manor Nursing Home, Steele, died March 7, 1997, in the nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at Golden Manor Nursing Home Chapel. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at Eastgate Memorial Chapel, Steele, and will continue one hour prior to services, at the nursing home chapel.
Velma was born Dec. 13, 1935 in Bismarck, the daughter of Oscar and Elsie (Belile) Jerset. Velma lived with her family on a farm in Sterling, and then she moved to Driscoll in 1972. She entered the Golden Manor Nursing Home in 1973 and resided there until her death. Velma loved to crochet, being outside and wildlife.
She is survived by her mother, Elsie, Bismarck; two nieces, April Jerset and Melissa Jerset, both of Frenchtown, Mont.; one aunt, Bernice Belile, Driscoll; many cousins; and her special family and friends at the Golden Manor Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her father, Oscar; and one brother Merle.
The family prefers memorials to the Golden Manor Nursing Home, Steele.
Lorena Shortridge
Lorena R. Shortridge, 89, Auburn, Wash., formerly of Mandan, died March 4, 1997, in Auburn. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, at Price Helton Funeral Chapel, Auburn. Graveside services will follow at Mount View Cemetery, Auburn.
She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Willmuth, Pomona, Calif.; one brother, Harold Jarvis, Morris, Minn., and one son, Donovan, Federal Way, Wash.

Helen Schwarze
ANAMOOSE -- Helen Schwarze, 81, Anamoose, died Nov. 8, 1996, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Anamoose. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She is survived by two sons, Bob, Anamoose, and Greg, Las Vegas, Nev.; and one half-brother, Erwin Fischer, Neuenburg, Germany. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)
L.D. Christensen
KENMARE -- L.D. "Lee" Christensen, 72, longtime resident of Kenmare, who served in the state Legislature for 15 years and later on the State Board of Higher Education, died Nov. 9, 1996, of natural causes at his home in Bismarck, where he and his wife, Marjorie, had moved for the winter.
Christensen was elected to the N.D. House of Representatives in 1960 and served until 1965. He served in the N.D. Senate from 1967 to 1975 and was minority leader from 1971 to 1973. He was named by former Gov. George Sinner to the State Board of Higher Education in 1985. Christensen also had maintained a lifelong interest in soil conservation work and had been honored by the Soil Conservation Service for his work in that field.
He and his wife maintained homes in both Kenmare and Bismarck. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Jill Carlson, Marquette, Mich.; and two sons, Kirk, Kenmare and Bismarck, and David, Grand Forks.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with burial following at Lakeview Cemetery, both in Kenmare.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare. There will be no reviewal at the church.
Memorials are preferred to Nazareth Lutheran Church or to Nature Conservancy at Bismarck.
Fred Alt
ELGIN -- Fred Alt, 88, Elgin, died Nov. 7, 1996, in the Glen Ullin nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Monday, at Zion Lutheran Church, Elgin, with the Rev. Nancy Jaster officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Elgin.
Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today, at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin, and will continue one hour prior to services, at the church. Serving as casketbearers are Waldemar and Ray Alt, Norman Iszler, Dennis Schmitz, Robert Heim and Jerry Frey.
Fred Alt was born Aug. 1, 1908, in Chicago, Ill., to Fredrick and Christianna (Mabus) Alt. In 1909 he went with his parents to Rosenheim, North Russia along the Volga River to get his brother, Alex, who had stayed with his grandparents while his parents came to Chicago to find work and a place to live. They all returned to Chicago within a year. Fred started school in Chicago and in September of 1918 moved with his parents and family to the Willa area and later north of New Leipzig, N.D.
Fred married Bertha Frey Jan. 19, 1932, at New Leipzig. They made their home on a farm north of New Leipzig, and Fred hauled coal for the Roberts Coal Mine and drove a school bus. He also worked at Hetzlers Garage and on WPA. In 1939 they moved to Elgin and rented the Standard Service Station. They later bought the Dittus garage building in 1943 and started remodeling it into Alt's Supply Store. Fred's brother Art went into business with them buying the Coast to Coast franchise. In 1965 Fred sold his share of the business to Art and semi-retired. He then opened Fred's Repair Shop until 1980 fixing everything from TVs to sharpening chainsaws.
Fred enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. He will be remembered as a gentle, caring person who loved kids, although he and Bertha were not blessed with any of their own. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Elgin and a Lions Club.
He is survived by one brother, Gust, New Leipzig; two sisters, Helen Krause, Lark, and Anna Iszler, New Leipzig; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bertha; and two brothers, Alex and Art.
Charlie Chadwick
Charlie F. Chadwick, 72, Louisberg, Mo., died Nov. 8, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until time of services Monday, all at the funeral home.
Charlie Franklin Chadwick was born Aug. 22, 1924 at Breien, N.D., to Frank and Lucy (Cornish) Chadwick. He was raised and educated at Breien and Freida, N.D. Charlie married Adeline Fraase Dec. 10, 1942, in Carson. He worked on the family farm before serving in the United States Marines from 1944 to 1946. He was stationed on Guam and Hawaii.
After the war he returned to Bismarck and drove truck for Midwest Motors. Charlie then moved to Dilworth, Minn., and operated an independent truck operation for several years. He also had a welding shop in Keene, N.D. He moved to Louisberg, Mo., in 1972 and operated a welding shop there until December of 1995 when he sold his properties and business, and retired.
Charlie was an active Lions Club member and had accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
He is survived by his wife, Adeline, at home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Rhinney C. and Joanne, and Charlie M. and Pat, all of Fargo, and Harold D. and Sandra, Keene; one sister, Lucille Bowers, Tipton, Iowa; two brothers, Orville, Donna, Texas, and Lonnie, Bismarck; eight grandchildren, Kim Quade, Kara Stockwell, Kelly Hamilton, Michael Chadwick, Heather Chadwick, Tarri Chapin, Crystal Houser and Erik Chadwick; and six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials.
