MEDINA -- Albert Schmallinger, 80, Medina, died Jan. 6, 1997, in Bismarck. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Emmanuel Methodist Church, Medina, with burial in Medina Cemetery.

He is survived by two brothers, William, Bismarck, and Alvin, Lodi, Calif.; and four sisters, Lydia Miller, Harvey, and Violet Turner, Verna Grenz and Darlene Maxey, all of Lodi. (Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown)

Erna Weisz
HAZEN -- Erna Weisz, 85, Beulah, died Jan. 6, 1997, in the Beulah nursing home. Services will be at 10 a.m. MST Friday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen. Further arrangements are pending at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.

Jerald Snippen
BALDWIN -- Jerald Snippen, 47, Baldwin, died Jan. 4, 1997, near his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church, Minot, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.

He is survived by his mother, Thelma Snippen, Minot; and one sister, Sharon Stiens, Cincinnati, Ohio. (Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot)

Henry Riegler
Henry Carl Riegler, 81, 2625 N. 19th St., died Jan. 7, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 3 p.m. today at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Henry was born Nov. 21, 1915, in Little Rock, Ark. He graduated from University of Michigan and University of Arkansas Medical School. He was a captain in the U.S. Army and a member of the medical corp during World War II. He finished his surgical residency at the Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y., and served on the surgical staff as well as the staff of the Roswell Park Memorial Institute, a cancer research facility in Buffalo. He moved to Temple, Texas, in 1967, to serve on the surgical staff of the Veterans Administration Hospital until his retirement in 1987. After the death of his wife in 1994, he came to Bismarck where his son, Henry, lives.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Marguerite and Wulf Hess, Mirabeau, France, and Marianne and Michael Freedman, Albuquerque, N.M.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Henry and Vicki, Bismarck, and Michael, Temple; one sister, Waltha Stroble, Burbank, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.

Mary Roberts
Mary Roberts, 86, 901 E. Bowen Ave., died Jan. 7, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at noon Friday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charles Heidt officiating. Burial will be in the the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, where a rosary will begin at 7 tonight.

Mary was born Oct. 2, 1910, near Strasburg, the daughter of Jacob and Nathlia (Deichert) Holzer. She was raised and educated in Montana and Strasburg. Mary helped farm with her family until moving to Aberdeen, S.D., in the early 1920s. Mary married Lloyd Roberts, May 22, 1936. They moved to California in 1941, and in 1948, she and Lloyd moved to Linton, where they owned and operated a bakery. In 1959, they moved to Bismarck.

She enjoyed fishing and loved gardening. Her children politely referred to her as "Mom, the farmer." She loved her family, and her grandchildren were especially dear to her heart.

In earlier years, she and Lloyd were members of Knights of Columbus and Eagles Club. She belonged to the Catholic Christian Mothers group while in Linton. Presently, Mary was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

She is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Gerald and Sharon, Colorado, Robert and Maria, Richard and Jack, all of California; one daughter, Marilyn Roberts, Bismarck; four granddaughters, Kimberly, Michelle, BethAnne and Lori; seven grandsons, Robert, David, John, Greg, Mark, Michael and Rory; three great-grandchildren; five half-sisters, Johanna Vetter, Theresa Reis, Theckla Senger, Monica Senger and Magdalena Fischer; two step-brothers, Iggie and John Reinbold; one step-sister, Eleanor Wagner; and many nieces, nephews and good friends.

In addition to her husband, Lloyd, who died on Nov. 19, 1983, she was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Anton Reinbold; three brothers, Martin, Jack and Joseph Holzer; one half-brother, Frank Reinbold; and one stepsister, Ann Bauer.

Norman Vernon
Norman H. Vernon, 74, formerly of Mandan, died Jan. 8, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. James Baneck officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation will begin at the church one hour before services.

Norman was born Aug. 8, 1922, in Presho, S.D., the son of Herbert and Carola (Ricks) Vernon. His family homesteaded in Presho until he was 12. They then moved to Jeromesville, Ohio, where he graduated from Jeromesville High School. Norman enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, and was a pharmacist assistant, serving in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Mildred Skari, March 7, 1946. They moved to North Dakota in 1951. In 1959, they moved to Bismarck, and in 1976 he moved to southern Minnesota. He worked for the Minneapolis Star Tribune for 27 years, retiring April 1, 1981. After his retirement, he moved to Mandan. He entered Bismarck Baptist Home in 1995.

Norman loved gardening, woodworking, photography, cooking and traveling. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Mandan, and served as treasurer. He also was a member of Mandan American Legion and Bismarck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy "Dottie" and Monty Longmuir, Menoken, and Julie and Jefferie Hoffman, Bismarck; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dennis and LaVerne, Minot, Kent and Tammie, Hazen, and Mark, Bismarck; seven grandchildren, Ginger, Owen, Chad, Chris, Emily, Annika and Brandt; one great-grandson, Patrick; one brother and sister-in-law, Dell and Kate, Orville, Ohio; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Roy Funk, Jeromesville, and Lois and John Hines, Ashland, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Mary H. Vernon. (Eastgate Funeral Service)

Dr. W.W. 'Wally' Maercklein
MOTT -- Services for Dr. W.W. "Wally" Maercklein, 79, Sun Lakes, Ariz., will be at 10:30 a.m. MST Saturday at Church of St. Vincent de Paul, Mott, with the Rev. Dennis Schafer officiating. Burial will be in St. Vincent's Cemetery, Mott.

Pallbearers will be Lonny and Cary Maercklein, Gary Looney, and Stephen and David Crane.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday.

Wallace Wilson Maercklein was born Nov. 30, 1917, at Mott, to Dr. Otto Carl and Angela (Krebsbach) Maercklein. Wally attended Mott Public School and graduated in 1933. He furthered his education by attending the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks for four years and received his medical degree from Northwestern in Chicago. He served his internship at Denver General in Denver, Colo. After establishing his private practice in Englewood, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. Wally served for two years, commuting from Colorado Springs to Englewood where he continued practicing medicine for 31 years. In 1974, he practiced in Holyoke, Colo., until 1985. Wally retired for 10 months and then began working for Comp Health. He traveled 12 states filling in for medical doctors who needed time away. Wally and Donna moved to Sun Lakes, Ariz., in September 1994. In August 1995, Wally retired due to health reasons. They traveled extensively around the world and had visited every country. Wally died Jan. 6, 1997, in a Chandler, Ariz., hospital at the age of 79 years, one month and six days.

He enjoyed trains and was an avid golfer and football fan. Wally developed a love for opera music and enjoyed attending musicals in New York and Santa Fe. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Pinehurst Country Club in Denver and Oakwood Country Club in Sun Lake. He will be remembered by friends and family as a very compassionate, gentle man who truly enjoyed his work.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Donna; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lonny and Sandee, Lakewood, Colo., and Cary and Beth, Aurora, Colo.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mitze and Dana Gatlin, Boston, Mass., and Dana and Michael Barnhill, Aurora; four grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, O.C. "Mugs," Mott; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Shirley and Charles E. Crane, Mott, Mercedes Walsch, Freeland, Wash., and Bernice Seitz, Purvis, Miss.; his father-in-law and best friend, Neal B. Looney, Denver.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Spencer; and one sister, Angela, in her youth.

A memorial has been established to the Church of St. Vincent de Paul, in care of the Rev. Dennis Schafer, 402 Iowa Ave., Mott, N.D. 58646.

Philip 'Mike' Gutensohn
Philip Duane (Mike) Gutensohn was born July 29, 1937, in Linton, the son of Ila (Woods) Gutensohn and the late Philip H. Gutensohn. He attended Turtle Lake High School, then served in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army (11th Airborne Division and 10th Special Forces) from 1955 to 1960. He married Lynn Mandigo at McCabe Methodist Church, Bismarck, on April 1, 1961.

Mike was employed by the Associated Press, the Bismarck Tribune and the Grand Forks Herald as he worked his way through college. After graduating from Bismarck Junior College he earned his PHB at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks.

Mike joined the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State in 1966 and circled the globe in a distinguished career spanning more the 30 years. Accompanied by his wife and four children, he served in Bamako, Mali; Bangkok, Thailand; Hong Kong, BCC; Jidda, Saudi Arabia; Vientiane, Laos; Seoul, Korea; Kinshasa, Zaire; and Manila, Philippines; in addition to two assignments (as Deputy Executive Director of Intelligence and Research and East Asia-Pacific) in the State Department, Washington, D.C. He was selected for a year of post graduate study at the National Defense University's Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) in 1988 and promoted into the ranks of the Senior Foreign Service. After his retirement in March 1995, he accompanied his wife, also a Foreign Service Officer, on assignment to Vancouver, British Columbia.

Throughout his rich and colorful life, whether tracking early U.S. astronauts through African skies as a communicator, serving as a bodyguard to the Secretary of State as a Diplomatic Security Special Agent, safeguarding lives and U.S. property through typhoons in the Pacific, evacuating American citizens during insurrections in Zaire, or organizing the 50th anniversary salute to honor thousands of WWII veterans at Leyte Gulf in the Philippines as an administrative counselor, Mike took great pride in doing his duty to his country as a native North Dakotan.

Mike died suddenly of cardiac arrest in Canada on Jan. 1, 1997. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Lynn Gutensohn, Vancouver, B.C., his mother Ila Gutensohn, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Kelly Gutensohn; six grandchildren, Stephen, Katherine, Audrey, Rachel, Mike and Caroline, all of Stafford, Va.; daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Todd Field, Burlington, Wash., Leah and Ethan Erickson, Grand Forks; one son, Philip S. Gutensohn, Grand Forks; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Joyce, Grand Forks, Richard and Jacque, Gresham, Ore., Charles and Carol, Poway, Calif., and Joel and Linda, Reno, Nev.; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat and Cliff Ness, Bismarck, and Ila Mae and Lowell Thomas, Tigard, Ore.; and 20 nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his father; one sister, Betty Jane; and one grandson, Joel.

Services will be held Saturday at McCabe Methodist Church, Bismarck. The family is establishing a Mike Gutensohn Memorial Scholarship at the University of North Dakota in his honor. Gordon Trusty
Gordon W. Trusty, 64, died Jan. 5, 1997, in Omaha, Neb., of natural causes. Services will be in Melrose, Minn.

Gordon was born Feb. 16, 1932, in Rochester, Minn., the son of Walter and Luella Trusty. He served in the United States Navy and was a local businessman and rancher.

He is survived by his former wife, Elsie Trusty, Bismarck; his children and their spouses, Milo and Vicki Trusty, Bismarck, Sharon and John Horott, Las Vegas, Jerry and Debbie Trusty, Alpharetta, Ga., Mike and Barbie Trusty, Riverside, Calif., Bob Trusty, Bismarck, and Barry and Josie Trusty, Hollywood, Fla.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Jerri Lou Ryan, White Eagle, Minn.; and his mother, Luella Trusty, Harmony, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his father and one sister.

Gilbert Liffrig
MINOT -- Gilbert Liffrig, 79, Minot, formerly of Makoti, died Jan. 6, 1997, in a Minot nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Trinity Nursing Home Chapel, Minot. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery, northeast of Plaza.

He is survived by one sister, Verna Lee, Minot; and three brothers, Clifford, Wilfrid and Daniel, all of Mazeppa, Minn. (Johnson Funeral Home, Parshall)

Elton Herreid
WILLISTON -- Elton D. Herreid, 70, Williston, died Jan. 6, 1997, in the Williston hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Everson Funeral Home, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

He is survived by one sister, Shirley Helberg, Williston; and one brother, Arvie, Williston.

Robert Schaar
SCRANTON -- Robert Lewis Schaar, 80, Scranton, died Jan. 7, 1997, at his home. Services will be at 10 a.m. MST Saturday at Pierce Congregational Church, rural Scranton, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by five sons, Robert, Chillicothe, Ill., Lewis and Jerome, both of Heron, S.D., Bill, Scranton, and Neil, Fessenden; one daughter, Cheryl Wolf, Grand Forks; three sisters, Dorothy Hansen, Bowman, Jean Goodhue, Cortez, Colo., and A. Virginia Pedeliski, Grand Forks; and one brother, Roy, Scranton. (Krebsbach Funeral Service, Bowman)

Leah Hofmann
JAMESTOWN -- Leah Hofmann, 83, Jamestown, died Jan. 6, 1997, in the Jamestown hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown, with burial in Medina Cemetery.

She is survived by four daughters, Della Frodge, Redondo Beach, Calif., Delora Ben and Darlene Keim, both of Jamestown, and Sharon Schneider, Bismarck; three sons, Oscar, Medina, Gerald, Jamestown, and Elmer, Bismarck; one brother, Reuben Obenauer, Jamestown; and one sister, Esther Ellefson, Appleton, Minn.

Erna Weisz
HAZEN -- Erna Weisz, 85, Beulah, died Jan. 6, 1997, in the Beulah nursing home. Services will be at 10 a.m. MST Friday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Doris Weigum, Leesburg, Fla.; one son, Dalas, Rochester, Minn.; six sisters, Mary Miller, Beulah, Hattie Kruckenberg, New Salem, Irene Unterseher and Irma Ellwein, both of Hazen, and Ida Birney and Evelyn Schuh, both of California. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

Robert Kruger
HALLIDAY -- Robert Kruger, 68, Halliday, died Jan. 5, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST today at Immanuel United church of Christ, Taylor, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by one brother, Roland, Baker, Mont. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Leonard Friesz
FLASHER -- Leonard Friesz, 54, Flasher, died Jan. 8, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. MST Saturday at St. Lawrence Church, Flasher.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 CST tonight at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a St. Anthony Verein rosary will be said at 8 CST tonight. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. CST Friday at the funeral home, and after 4 p.m. MST Friday at the church, where a parish vigil will begin at 7 p.m. MST Friday, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m. MST.

Pauline Benishek
NEW SALEM -- Pauline Benishek, 101, New Salem, died Jan. 8, 1997, in the New Salem nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Robert Faul
MARTIN -- Robert Faul, 69, Martin, died Jan. 8, 1997, in the Harvey hospital. Arrangements are pending with Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Lenora Palmer
Lenora K. Palmer, 81, 2500 Centennial Road, died July 8, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital after a long illness. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charles Heidt officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, where a parish vigil will begin at 7 tonight.

Lenora was born Oct. 8, 1914, in McClusky, the daughter of August and Elizabeth (Morlock) Schaeffer. She was raised and educated in McClusky. She married Arthur Broeckel on Oct. 31, 1931, at McClusky. They farmed in McClusky until 1944, when they moved to Bismarck. In 1955 they moved to Pollock, S.D., where they lived until returning to Bismarck in 1959. Lenora worked for Dunahey's Paint and Glass and Woolworth's until she retired. She loved working with crafts and fishing. Mr. Broeckel died Jan. 28, 1988. She married James Palmer, June 22, 1988, in Bismarck.

She is survived by her husband, James; one daughter and son-in-law, Daphne and Gordon Keller, Center; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Penney Ardmore, Okla., and Gary and Annette, Mandan; four stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Carin and Byron West, Kintyre, Mary and Terry VanderLaan, Pollock, Sharon and Patrick Scholl, Bismarck, and Janice and Dr. David Collins, Monroe, Wash.; two stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, James J. and Shirley Palmer, Long Lake, Minn., and Rod and Susan Palmer, Arden Hills, Minn.; one brother and sister-in-law, Adolph and Olinda Schaeffer, McClusky; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and 17 step-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Lenora was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Fowler; four brothers; and two sisters.
