Walter Heyd
HEBRON -- Walter Heyd, 64, Hebron, died Jan. 29, 1997, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Walter was born Jan. 20, 1933, at Napoleon, to Rudolph and Lydia (Mayer) Heyd. He moved to Hebron in 1937 where he was raised on the Senne farm and attended Hebron School. He worked on the farm until entering the U.S. Army, Nov. 10, 1954. He was discharged on Nov. 8, 1957 and attended barber school. He barbered in Scranton and later in Hebron. In 1969 he began working for the Hebron Brick Co. where he was employed until 1983.
He is survived by one son, Terry, Mandan; one daughter, Cheri Brausch, Jefferson, Ore.; three grandchildren; three brothers, Hebert, Reno, Nev., and Bob and Lloyd, both of Lodi, Calif.; one sister, Virginia Schwartz, Hebron; and one half-sister, Ione Bolstead, Napoleon. Muriel Hyden
Muriel R. Hyden, 77, 1406 N. 16th St., Bismarck, died Jan. 29, 1997, at her home. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jo Olson officiating.
Muriel was born Oct. 8, 1919, at Mohall, the daughter of Ludwig and Elma (Jordahl) Rockne. She was raised and educated in Mohall and graduated from North Dakota State University. Muriel taught Home Economics for 33 years in North Dakota, Oregon and Minnesota. In 1977, she was named North Dakota Vocational Educator of the Year. She married Thomas Kit Hyden in 1948 in Weiser, Idaho. She moved to Bismarck in 1986. Muriel enjoyed reading, knitting and sewing and was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, American Association of University Women, American Home Economics Association, American Vocational Association and Sons of Norway.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Hyden and Robyn Harrison, Bismarck; one nephew, Mike and Karen Rockne; two nieces, Peggy Rockne and Cindy Rockne; three great-nieces, Mari Lynn Rockne, Kristen Rockne and Laura Rockne; and one sister-in-law, Jean Rockne.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas; her parents; and one brother, Lloyd. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)
Evelyn Prince
McCLUSKY -- Evelyn A. Prince, 66, McClusky, died Jan. 29, 1997, at her home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, McClusky. Burial will be in McClusky City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.
Evelyn was born April 5, 1930, at Pickardville, the daughter of Albert and Clara (Pickard) Jorgensen. She grew up in Pickardville, where she attended grade school and graduated from McClusky High School in 1949. Evelyn married Edward Prince, June 4, 1950, at Pickardville. They lived in McClusky, Tappen, Bismarck, Watford City, Williston and in 1990 they returned to McClusky.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in McClusky where she was the treasurer of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She also was the current president of McClusky Senior Citizens.
She is survived by her husband; three sons and daughters-in-law, Allan and Verlynne, Rapid City, S.D., Robert and Jeannette, Denver, and Andrew and Elaina, Plentywood, Mont.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Lynn and Wayne Helm, McClusky, and Betty Platt, Watford City; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Jorgensen, McClusky, and Albert Jorgensen Jr., Othello, Wash.; and one sister, Gladys Jorgenson, Casselton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Elwin and Norman; one sister, Alice; and one granddaughter, Tina Platt.
Jacob `Jake' Vavra
STANTON -- Jacob F. ``Jake" Vavra, 85, Stanton, died Jan. 28, 1997, in the Glen Ullin nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. CST Saturday at Center United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Phil Lint officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Jacob was born Dec. 11, 1911, on his father's homestead in Oliver County, the son of Joseph and Katie (Beba) Vavra. He was raised and educated in Oliver County and also lived in Alabama, Texas and Canada while growing up, returning to North Dakota in 1930. He married Alice Benjamin, April 1, 1937, at Hannover. They moved to Everett, Wash., and returned to a farm near Hannover in 1940. He lived and worked on his farm six miles north of Hannover until he became a resident of Marian Manor Nursing Home in Glen Ullin on Dec. 23, 1996. Alice died Oct. 29, 1987.
Jake served as president of Pleasant Valley School Board, was on the board of the ASCS for many years, as well as the Oliver County Farmers Union and rural fire department boards. While work and the farm were of primary importance to Jake, he also enjoyed gardening, visiting and playing cards, as well as reading.
He is survived by one son, Harold, Stanton; one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Jim Riedemann, Hazen; one granddaughter and her husband, Kari and Jim Mohl, Hazen; and one great-granddaughter, Kelsey Ann Mohl; one sister, Helen Willis, Houston; and two brothers, Louis, Houston, and George, Sweeney, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice; one sister, Lydia Vavra; and four brothers, Frank, Joe, Ed and Charlie. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Viola Becker
Viola Becker, 83, Mandan, died Jan. 4, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran church, Mandan, with the Rev. Charles Taft officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.
Viola was born June 21, 1913, south of Heil, the daughter of John and Katerina (Hoffer) Ketterling. She attended Rock District School.
Viola married Pearl Paul Becker, June 18, 1933, in a double wedding. As a young mother she was active in softball and participated in scouting activities with her sons. Later she was very active in making crafts, crocheting and knitting. In her later years her greatest single joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Viola worked various waitress jobs and her last employment was with Osco Drug in Bismarck, where she worked for many years.
Viola was loved and will be missed dearly by her four sons and daughters-in-law, Lester and Patricia, Colorado Springs, Colo., Dennis and Janice, Naperville, Ill., Ronald and Patricia, Nampa, Idaho, and Gary and Judy, Mandan; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Irma Bellon and Milta Zimmerman, both of Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; her daughter, Marilyn Jane; one sister, Arlene Kramer, Bismarck; and two brothers, Alvin, Bismarck, and Reuben, Fontana, Calif.
Billy Lukenbach
HARVEY -- Billy B. Lukenbach, 56, Harvey, died Jan. 5, 1997, in the Harvey hospital. A family service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden. Burial will be in Heaton Cemetery.
He is survived by four sisters, Alta Brakel, Heaton, Helen Francis and Mary Jane Hafner, both of Sykeston, and Nellie Whipple, Malone, Wash.; and three brothers, Horace, Malone, Harry Jr., Sykeston, and Wayne, Surrey.
Frances Schneider
JAMESTOWN -- Frances D. Schneider, 76, Jamestown, died Jan. 5, 1997, in the Jamestown nursing home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Basilica of St. James, Jamestown, with the Rev. Chad Wilhelm officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Glen Ullin.
Frances Cook was born July 14, 1920, at Fessenden, the daughter of Russell B. and Marjorie (DeVoe) Cook. She was active in church music, Girl Scouts and the Degree of Honor. She received her elementary education at Fessenden and graduated from Fessenden High School in 1938. She pursued a degree in English and secondary education at Jamestown College. She graduated in 1942 and began her teaching career in Glen Ullin. She and Sgt. Joseph L. Schneider were married Aug. 19, 1943, at Monterey, Calif. Frances continued her teaching career in Belfield and Harvey before returning to Glen Ullin, where she and Joe lived. She managed the school library and taught for another 33 years. Joe died in 1984. Frances moved to Jamestown in 1988, where she became active in Retired Teachers Association and several bridge and pinochle clubs. She enjoyed friends, family history and her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by one son, Stephen R., Lincoln; one daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Frank Clemens, Jamestown; and three grandchildren, Stephanie and Chris, both of Lincoln, and Frank III, Jamestown. (Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown)
Lennart Petterson
GARRISON -- Lennart Petterson, 73, Garrison, died of cancer Jan. 5, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Church of Christ, Garrison, with the Rev. Beth Hector officiating. Burial will be in Clifton Cemetery, Garrison, with military rites by Butte American Legion.
Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Lennart was born Dec. 26, 1923, near Emmet, to Karl F. and Christina (Mertz) Petterson. He attended rural schools in the area and worked for area farmers. In 1943, he entered the U.S. Army Infantry, serving in the South Pacific and in Japan for three years. After his discharge from the service, he farmed and did custom baling. He also worked for Lindteigen Construction for a time. He retired and moved to Garrison in 1985.
Music was an important part of Lennart's life. He played the accordion, harmonica and mandolin with other family members. He also loved to dance, especially the waltz and polkas.
He is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Reuben Broneske, Underwood; three nieces, Marlene Jones, Underwood, Evelyn Jones-Hartson, Minot, and Mavis Heise, Stamford, Conn.; one nephew, Thomas Jones, Minot; one uncle, Adam Mertz, Long Pine, Calif.; and two grand-nieces and one grand-nephew.
Lennart was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elsie Jones; and one brother, Walter Petterson.
