Fred Leno, 82, Steele, died March 8, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bismarck Funeral Home.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Sharon, Elmo, Wash.; three grandchildren, Dale, Laurie and Leslie Leno; two great-grandchildren, Jeromy and Nichole, all of Washington; one brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Delores, Bismarck; and five sisters and two brothers-in-law, Clara Trautman, Mandan, Emelia Whitmore, Roundup, Mont., Hattie Miller, Harvey, Betty and Kenneth Steele, Redfield, S.D., and Catherine and Jake Brose, Longmont, Mont.
He was preceded in death by one son; one brother; and three sisters.

Viola Tokach
Viola H. Tokach, 87, 806 Sweet Briar Road, Mandan, died of cancer, March 11, 1997, at her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemetery. The Rev. Albert Leary will officiate.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 4 p.m. today. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7 tonight, followed by a St. Anthony Verein rosary at 7:30, and a parish vigil at 8.
Viola Weiss was born Dec. 17, 1909, south of Mandan. She was the daughter of William and Sophia (Soucy) Wiess. She was raised and educated at Highland School. She graduated from Mandan High School and Dickinson State College with a degree in elementary education. She taught school at the Little Heart and Ambulance Butte School Districts. On March 4, 1930, Viola and Matt A. Tokach were united in marriage at St. Anthony. After their marriage they farmed east of St. Anthony until their retirement in 1972, when they moved to Mandan.
Viola was an active and lifelong member of the Willing Workers Homemakers. She was a 40-year 4-H leader and longtime member of Catholic Daughters, where she served as Past Grand Regent. In addition she served as a secretary for the Mandan Golden Age where she had been a member. She was also a member of Mandan Hospital Auxiliary. Her membership included the Christian Mothers of St. Anthony and Christ the King. Viola will especially be remembered for her many hours of volunteer work.
She is survived by her husband, Matt; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Dick and Theresa, St. Anthony, and Bill, Susquehanna, Pa.; one daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Ann and Gerald Falk, Harrisburg, Ore.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Fred, Fargo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Marquarite.
The family prefers memorials to St. Alexius Hospice.
Violette Arntz
Violette Arntz, 92, Salem, Ore., formerly of Bismarck, died Feb. 25, 1997. Memorial services were held March 3 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Bismarck at a later date.
Violette was born Feb. 23, 1905, in Hancock, Minn., to Joseph W. Gregor and Elvena Erps. She spent her youth in Minnesota, and attended college there. She moved to Burnstad to teach school. It was there she met and married Theodore John Arntz in 1926. During her teaching career of 47 years, Violette influenced the lives of several generations of students. She added many extra dimensions to their lives, including her love of music and dance.
Her civic activities included Catholic Daughters of America and Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Honorary Society. She was nominated for North Dakota Mother of the Year in 1975. Violette enjoyed music, dancing, playing bridge and painting.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith, in 1970, and by her husband, Theo, in 1973.
She is survived by one daughter, Eileen Hochhalter, Salem; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Florence Tellinghusen
Florence Tellinghusen, 82, Portland, Ore., formerly of Glen Ullin, died Jan. 30, 1997. Services were held in Portland.
She is survived by one sister, Edna, Portland.
Faye Hoffman
DEVILS LAKE -- Faye E. Hoffman, 49, Devils Lake, died Feb. 28, 1997, in Sheyenne. Services were held March 3 at First Lutheran Church, Sheyenne, with burial in Grandfield Cemetery, Sheyenne.

Fred T. Gustin, 89, Billings, Mont., formerly of Flasher, died March 4, 1997, in a Billings nursing home. Services were held March 7 at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral, Billings, with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Billings.
He is survived by his wife, Minnie; two daughters, Loretta Frank, Billings, and Hilde Bezdicek, Tempe, Ariz.; two sons, Lee, Billings, and Ken, Kirkland, Wash.; two brothers, Joe, Flasher, and Julius, Tacoma, Wash.; and two sisters, Mary Mazza, Tacoma, and Clem Lauinger, Mandan.
Mary Shaide

Helen Raaf
DICKINSON -- Helen Raaf, 71, Dickinson, died March 10, 1997, in a Dickinson nursing home. Memorial graveside services will be held at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Richardton, at a later date.
She is survived by one daughter, Charolette DeBrie, Hermiston, Ore.; two sons, Jon, Ellendale, and Roger, Fargo; four sisters, Agnes Alpert, Richardton, Elinor Gathwrigat and Dorthy Mutschelknaus, both of Hebron, and Marie Burger, Weippe, Idaho; and three brother, Richard Rebel and Frank Rebel, both of Richardton, and Albert Rebel, Weippe. Fred Ripplinger
Fred Ripplinger, 79, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, died March 10, 1997, in the nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Spirit of Life Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30.
Fred was born July 12, 1917, in Linton, the son of Frank and Caroline (Ricther) Ripplinger. He was raised and educated in Selfridge. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1944. Fred worked for Missouri Valley Motors as a salesman for 40 years. He also worked for Wilhelm Car Dealership.
Fred is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Frederick Wayne and Cheryl, Mandan; seven daughters and six sons-in-law, Bernadette and Larry Leingang, Margaret and Dennis Pulkrabek, Yvonne and Jim Klimin, and Joan Vader, all of Mandan, Betty Jane and Roger Anda, Joyce and Jim LePine, and Carol and Loren Boath, all of Fargo; 29 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Nick, Tacoma, Wash., and Alex, Mandan; and one sister, Emma Deitrich, Tacoma.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Rose Marie Ripplinger and Linda Maxon; one brother, Pete; four sisters, Mary Kuntz, Maggie McCove, Phillamina Wingeter and Margaret Steckler; and one grandson, Reid Ryan Maxon.
Mable Matzke
Mable M. Matzke, 80, Bismarck, died March 10, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bismarck Reformed Church, with Ron Klein officiating. Burial will be in Montana.
Visitation will be held at the church one hour before services.
Mable was born March 27, 1916, near Sawyer, the daughter of Albert and Mathilda (Horning) Montgomery. She went to school in Remer and Boy River. On Oct. 14, 1937, Mable was married to Harold Matzke in Walker, Minn. They moved to Mankato, Minn., where she worked for Armours with Harold until 1948. During this time she had three children, Robert, Jeanne and Patricia. Harold was transferred in 1948 and the family moved to Bismarck. While in Bismarck, Mable worked at Armours, as a state poultry inspector and at Bismarck Super Valu. Mable was one of the first members of the Bismarck Reformed Church. She loved teaching Sunday School and Cub Scouts.
In 1974 Harold retired and they moved to Troy, Mont., where they built a home south of town. She lived there until 1988. After her husband died, she moved to Bismarck to be with her children. She became a member of Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and number puzzles.
Mable is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Dianne, Bismarck; two daughters and one son-in-law, Jeanne Gorden, Bismarck, and Patricia and Glenn Herdebu, Baldwin; six grandchildren, Wendy and Harold, Cindy and Michael, and Jeff and Jennifer; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Mathilda Montgomery; her husband, Harold; eight brothers, Joseph, Albert, Thomas, Robert, Carl, John, Frank and Theodore; and three sisters, Annie, Jennie and Lucy Montgomery. (Bismarck Funeral Home)
Linda Dudley
Linda Ohlhauser Dudley, 40, Graham, Wash., died March 4, 1997, in a Seattle hospital. Services were held March 9 at Fir Lane Memorial Chapel, Spanaway, Wash., with burial in Fir Lane Memorial Park, Spanaway.
Linda was born Nov. 13, 1956, in Bismarck, to Rudy and Lorna Ohlhauser. She was raised in Streeter and Stanley. She graduated from Stanley High School in 1975, and later from Minot State College. She married John Dudley, Sept. 27, 1980, in Stanley. She was employed as a travel agent in the Tacoma/Seattle area. They have two daughters, Lauren, age, 11, and Caitlin, age 6.
She is survived by her husband, John; her daughters, Lauren and Caitlin; her mother, Lorna Ohlhauser, Bismarck; and two brothers, Jeff Uhlich, Denver, and Mike Ohlhauser, Minot.
Edward Thomas
Edward A. Thomas Jr., 53, Mandan, died March 10, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Richard Hagestuen officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, and will continue from 9 a.m. until noon Friday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour before services.
Edward A. was born May 15, 1943, at Havre, Mont, the son of Edward A. and Jean (LeGrand) Thomas Sr. He was raised and educated in Havre, and graduated from Havre High School in 1962. He attended Northern Montana College and worked for the Forest Service at Hungry Horse, Mont. He was once married to Marcia Divish, and later was married to Laurene Rostberg. In 1965 he started working for Great Northern Railroad in Havre. For the next 31 years he worked for the railroad as an electrician in Montana, Colorado and North Dakota.
He was a member of the National Corvette Association.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Vonda Kay and Robert Eierdam, Havre, and Keirsten and Kevin Wilson, Mandan; one son, Edward Brian, Mandan; four grandchildren, Justin and Alexis Eierdam, and Kylie and Kolten Wilson; his parents, Edward Sr. and Jean, Mesa, Ariz.; and special friends, Mary Hill and Paula Green, both of Mandan.
Melvin Hoffman
Melvin Clarence Hoffman, 80, 1120 N. 12th St., died March 12, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bismarck Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Thielenhaus officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service.
Melvin was born May 18, 1916, on a farm near Ebenezer, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Hugo Edward and Martha (Fenske) Hoffman. He was raised on his parents' farm and received his elementary education at the local school. He farmed with his parents, and later on his own.
Melvin married Frances LaVilla Hoff, Oct. 24, 1947, in Venturia. They farmed together in Ebenezer until 1957, when they gave up farming and moved to Wishek. Melvin worked as an implement parts man. He was also self-employed in sales work, but his real pride and joy was driving the Wishek Public School bus for 23 years. They have made their home in Bismarck since September 1990.
He accepted Christ as his personal savior in his teens under the ministry of the late Rev. William Hoover. He was active in the community and his church, in which he held various offices throughout the years. He was a member of Bismarck Baptist Church.
He used his talent and love of music by singing in male choirs and quartets all of his adult life in church, communities and on the radio. He also sang duets with his wife, Frances, for most of their married life. Melvin also had a love for the outdoors and wildlife. He especially enjoyed gardening, woodworking, hunting big game and had many beautiful trophies to his credit.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Suzanne, Burnsville, Minn., and Douglas and Shelley, Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren, Kimberly and Joshua, Burnsville, and Tyler, Mollie and Michael, all of Omaha; two sisters, Gertrude Remple, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Dorothy Richmond, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; one brother, Donald Hoffman, Vancouver; one sister-in-law, Esther Hoffman, Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada; one brother-in-law, Leslie Reiman, Yorkton; one uncle, Johnny Hoffman, Yorkton; many nieces and nephews; and many precious friends and relatives.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Singing Men of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Ebenezer, and the Male Chorus of First Baptist Church, Wishek, the former faculty and students of Wishek Public Schools and especially the students and parents of Bus Route No. 10.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ella Reiman; one brother, Lloyd; and his stepmother, Emma (Rempfer Mehlhoff) Hoffman.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Bismarck Baptist Church, Medcenter One Hospice or Wishek Dollars for Scholars.
Darlene Lofgren
Darlene J. Lofgren, 49, formerly of Bismarck, died March 8, 1997, in a Los Angeles hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by a rosary, both at the funeral home.
Darlene J. Baumgartner was born May 14, 1947, in Strasburg, the daughter of Jake and Aggie (Dosch) Baumgartner. She was raised and educated in Strasburg. She moved to Bismarck with her family in 1959. Darlene moved to Fargo in 1972. She married Ron Lofgren Feb. 2, 1974, in Hawley, Minn. She worked as a waitress for 34 years. Darlene moved to Arizona in 1990 and later to California. Darlene enjoyed working with people and spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved country music, dancing and swimming.
She is survived by one daughter, Tonia Lofgren, Chandler, Ariz.; two sons, Scott, Moorhead, Minn., and Jayson, Pensicola, Fla.; two grandchildren, Brandon and Ryan; her parents, Jake and Aggie Baumgartner, Bismarck; her twin sister and brother-in-law, Dian and Ralph Everhart; her sister and brother-in-law, Patty and Bob Schmidt, Bismarck; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Terry, Lakewood, Colo., and Bob and Evelyn, Linton; three nieces and six nephews, Mike, Mark and Mitch Baumgartner, Richard Roehrich, Lynn LaFleur, Jennie and Brock Baumgartner, Crystal and Chris Schmidt.
