LaVerne Coggins
LaVerne Coggins, 36, Orangevale, Calif., died Feb. 18, 1997, in her home after a long battle with cancer. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. MST Saturday at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Regent, with the Rev. Michael Krank officiating.
A wake service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the church.
LaVerne Marie Gion was born April 2, 1960, at Dickinson, the daughter of James G. Gion and Marie (Lefor) Gion. She received her elementary education at Regent Public School and graduated from Regent High School in 1978. She then attended Dickinson State College later attending Moorhead State University, graduating cum laude in 1983 with a bachelor's in consumer physical education. She moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., where she was an assistant manager for the YMCA.
She and Thomas Coggins were married June 9, 1984, at Pikes Peak, Colo. Later in 1984 they moved to San Antonio, where she was self-employed with StarTek, a windshield repair company. Before moving to Orangevale, Calif., in 1992, they resided in the states of Colorado and Texas.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas; her parents, Jim and Marie Gion; seven sisters and six brothers-in-law, Audrey and Tom Rafferty, New England, Cheryl and Brad Nasset, Regent, Yvonne and John Suess, Williston, Michelle Turpin, Cary, N.C., Cynthia and Don Stecher, Hettinger, Margo and Roger Haut, Jamestown, Gwen and James Allred, Lewiston, Idaho; five brothers and four sisters-in-law, James D. and Susan, Regent, William and Jean, Regent, Russ, Orangevale, Calif., John and Marti, White Bear Lake, Minn., and David and Nancy, Morrisville, N.C.; two brothers-in-law and their spouses, Pat and Kristi Coggins, Grand Junction, Colo., and Chris and LouAnn Coggins, Sacramento, Calif.; four sisters-in-law and their spouses, Terry and Jerry Springton, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Peggy and Gary Forney, Meeker, Colo., Coleen and Mark Wood, Erie, Colo., and Leslie and Tim Beatty, Silverthorne, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents; one niece, Angela Turpin; and one nephew, David Schubert.
Shirley Sackman
Shirley A. Sackman, 68, 814 N. Mandan St., died Feb. 23, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Shirley Hannon was born Dec. 11, 1928, in Menominee, Mich., the daughter of Edwin and Mary (Adam) Hannon. She was raised and educated in Menominee. She married Jacob E. Sackman, Feb. 22, 1947, in Menominee. They moved to Bismarck in 1947, where Shirley worked for Woolworth's. After their first child was born, Shirley continued to stay at home to raise her family. Shirley enjoyed crafts, and most of all spending time with her family.
She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Roger, Lincoln, Jake and Audrey, and Larry and Kathleen, all of Bismarck; four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Ron Moffit, Lana and Dave Sabot and Mary and Lee Pittsley, all of Bismarck, and Donna and Phillip Brookins, Baldwin, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Fifarek and Elaine Dora, both of Menominee; one brother, Tom, Menominee; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jake, in 1985; and two brothers, Harold and John.
Louie Hoffer
MCCLUSKY -- Louie Hoffer, 84, McClusky, died Feb. 22, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, McClusky, with burial in McClusky Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.
He was born Aug. 13, 1912, on the family farm northwest of McClusky, to Jacob Sr. and Eva (Krein) Hoffer. He grew up and attended rural school in Harris Township. He married Elsie Hegel, Oct. 13, 1937, at McClusky. They lived and farmed in Harris Township of Sheridan County. He retired from farming in 1974 and moved into McClusky that same year. He also worked at the Sheridan County courthouse for six years.
He was a member of United Methodist Church, McClusky. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and being with family members, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie; one daughter and son-in-law, Bernice and Clarence Flemmer, Sioux Falls, S.D.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Alvin and Helen, McClusky, and Gary, Bismarck; 10 grandchildren, Lori Sutton, Orlando, Fla., Jodi Bretzman and Vicki Flemmer, both of Sioux Falls, Lynette Roth, Melanie Hanson and Daniel John Hoffer, all of Bismarck, Jamie Hoffer, Mercer, Rhonda Watson, Tucson, Ariz., Jason Watson, Flaggstaff, Ariz. and Ryan Hoffer, Dickinson; five great-grandchildren, Kelsey Sutton, Nicole Hoffer, Jill Roth, Holly Watson and McKenzie Hanson; one brother, Theobald, McClusky; one sister, Eva Heisz, Bismarck; one stepbrother, Prosper Pfeifer, McClusky; and four stepsisters, Alvina Aichele, Bismarck, Pauline Stack, Fargo, Emma Roberts, Mandan, Freida Duncan, New Rockford.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Darla Watson; five brothers, Jacob Jr., Fred, John, Edwin, Ferdinand; and two sisters, Magdaline Schock and Pauline Heisz.
Minnie Sivesind
HALLIDAY -- Minnie Sivesind, 88, Halliday, died Feb. 21, 1997, in the Killdeer nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Halliday, with burial in Halliday Cemetery.
She is survived by two sons, Carlyle, Milwaukee, Wis., and Harry, Weaverville, Calif.; and one daughter, Shirley Ann Frafjord, Moscow, Idaho. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)
John Hummel
GARRISON -- John A. Hummel, 86, Garrison, died Feb. 24, 1997, in the Garrison nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garrison, with burial in Garrison Cemetery.
He is survived by one son, Clarence, Clarkston, Wash.; one daughter, Marjorie Satrang, Mountain Iron, Minn.; and three brothers, Rudy, Edwin and James, all of Garrison. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Mathias Lipp
STRASBURG -- Mathias W. Lipp, 88, Strasburg, died Feb. 22, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, with burial in the church cemetery.
He is survived by two sons, Robert, Renton, Wash., and Harold, Kalispell, Mont.; and four daughters, Dorothy Feist, Lawrence, Kan., Delores Soule, Auburn, Wash., Rachel Wald, Woodworth, and Carol Kramer, Strasburg. (Myers Funeral Home, Linton)
Dale Rongstad
WILLISTON -- Dale Rongstad, 67, Williston, died Feb. 23, 1997, in a St. Paul, Minn. hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at West Prairie Lutheran Church, with burial in Round Prairie Cemetery.

Herman Bliese
FORT RICE -- Herman Bliese, 96, Fort Rice, died Feb. 25, 1997, in the Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Richard Hagestuen officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.
Herman was born April 29, 1900, at Sansing Minn., the son of Fred and Emma (Meisner) Bliese. He came to North Dakota in 1924 and purchased a farm in the Fort Rice area. On June 3, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and served until March 16, 1943. He married Marjorie Chase, April 27, 1943. Herman was known in the Fort Rice area for threshing for his neighbors. He also operated a saw mill on the farm. After his retirement, he lived in Fort Rice where he found his greatest enjoyment working in the garden and growing many flowers. He moved to Mandan in February of 1995 and became a resident of Medcenter One Care Center, Oct. 16, 1996.
Herman is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Ida and Duane Heck, and Karen and Richard Heck, all of Mandan; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Raymond and Harold, both of Fort Rice, Mike and Cori, Mandan, and Gus and Bonnie, Ronan, Mont.; 11 grandchildren, Diane, Denise, Deana, Dawn, Rick, Heidi, Shawn, Gus Jr., Kenny, Sheridee and Mark; five great-grandchildren, Kayla, Joe, Jesse, Dalton and Dillon; one brother, George, Mandan; one sister, Amanda Muehleman, Clear Lake, Wis.; and a special friend, Clara Chase.
He was preceded in death by one son, Kenny; two sisters; and six brothers.
Anton Goetzfried
NEW SALEM -- Anton E. Goetzfried, 78, New Salem, died Feb. 24, 1997, in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MST Friday at St. Pius Catholic Church, New Salem, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan. Visitation will continue after 4 p.m. Thursday at the church, where a parish rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday, followed by the vigil at 7:30.
Anton E. Goetzfried was born April 21, 1918, in Dunn County, the son of Adam and Eleanora (Froehlich) Goetzfried. Tony was raised and educated in Dunn County. He continued his education in Minneapolis where he worked for Goetzfried Armature Rewinding Company in Minneapolis. He married Celia Stockness, Aug. 30, 1940, in Minneapolis. In 1947 they moved to Dickinson where he sold farm implements. In 1955 they moved to New Salem where they owned and operated a small business, Tony's Bar. In 1969 they returned to Minneapolis where they managed an apartment complex. In 1977 they returned to Bismarck where they managed an apartment complex. They later retired.
Anton is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Anthony and Judy, and Darrell and Karen, all of Mandan, and Richard and Pat, Bismarck; one daughter, Annette Rud, New Salem; eight grandchildren, Tina Svir, Kristie, Darrin and Michael Goetzfried, JayDee, Brent and Scott Rud, and Beth Ann Haff; one great-grandchild, Telsa Lee Haff; one brother, Pius, New Salem; and four sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Celia, who died March 5, 1994; two brothers, Ralph and John; and one sister, Emma; and one son-in-law, Curtis Rud.
Kathleen Gutknecht
COLEHARBOR -- Kathleen Winn Gutknecht, 61, Madera, Calif., formerly of Coleharbor, died Feb. 16, 1997, in Madera. Services were held Feb. 19 at Jay Chapel, Madera, with burial in Arbor Vitae Cemetery, Madera.
Kathleen was born April 26, 1935, to Ernest and Verna Winn of Coleharbor. She grew up in the Coleharbor area, and graduated from Coleharbor High School in 1953. She married Dallas Gutknecht of Underwood, Sept. 23, 1953.
She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Candace Lopez, Madera; two sons, Mickey and Brian, both of Madera; four grandchildren, all of Madera; three brothers, Willis, Garrison, Richard, Tucson, Ariz., her twin brother, and Kenneth, Coleharbor; and two sisters, Laverne Rivinius and Marianna Bader, both of Bismarck.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Anna Hummel
COLEHARBOR -- Anna Hummel, 92, Coleharbor, died Feb. 24, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison, with the Rev. Dick Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in Garrison Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Keith Brown, Kevin Brown, Kory Brown, Brandon Hummel, Jennifer Hummel, Joe Hummel, Barbara Nies and Darwin Gorden.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Anna Pauline Wallentine was born May 5, 1904, to Ludwig and Magdalena (Heck) Wallentine, on a farm near Coleharbor. On Jan. 5, 1922, she married John Hummel in a country church near Coleharbor. They lived on a farm near Underwood until 1941, when they moved to a farm near Coleharbor, known as Mallard Island. In 1950, they moved to a farm three miles east of Mallard Island. John died Feb. 18, 1961. Anna stayed on the farm until 1966, when she moved into Coleharbor. In 1982, she moved to the Manor in Garrison. In 1984, she moved to the Chateau in Bismarck and then to Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center.
She raised gardens and flowers and was an avid outdoor person. She loved to go fishing with her friends and family. She was a charter member of the Helping Hand Club, Ladies Aid and was a Gold Star Mother. She was active in her church in Garrison, until moving to Bismarck. She greatly enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Anna will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
She is survived by three daughters, Elsie Arndt, Arlene Jewell and Sylvia Brown, all of Bismarck; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Alvin and Elaine, Springtown, Texas, Walter and Maxine, Minot, and Bill, Castle Rock, Wash.; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sons, Harold, in infancy, and Carlyle, killed in the Korean Conflict in 1955; one grandson, Timothy Jewell; three sons-in-law; and one daughter-in-law.
Melvin Flatlie
DENHOFF -- Melvin Flatlie, 85, Denhoff, died Feb. 23, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, McClusky, with the Rev. George Schuessler officiating. Burial will be in Denhoff Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon today at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, and will continue from 2 to 7 tonight at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.
Melvin was born March 10, 1911, in New Germantown Township, near Martin, to Nels and Sigrid Flatlie, early Sheridan County homesteaders. He attended rural schools and then worked for Works Progress Administration during the Depression Years, before being employed by John Lindstrom of Denhoff. Agnes, daughter of John and Bertha Lindstrom, married Melvin and together they took over the Lindstrom property. This homestead has only had two operators since the Lindstroms settled the area in 1904.
Melvin and Agnes have two daughters and one son-in-law, Elaine Nestegard, Shoreview, Minn., and Mary Ann and Ray Rodrigue, LaCanada, Calif. The grandchildren are Mark Nestegard, Sandra Roehl, Lori Kollodge and Garrett Rodrigue. They also have three great-grandchildren, Shannon, Emily and Andrew Roehl.
Melvin contributed to many civic and charitable organizations. He was a Sheridan County Commissioner for 14 years, president of Denhoff Farmers Union Oil Co. for 29 years and served the Farmers Union County Organization for 30 years. He also was on the Verendrye Electric board of directors for 10 years, Denhoff School Board for nine years and was a member of Farmers Home Administration Board.
During the 1950s he ran for state representative and state senator on the Democratic ticket. He served as the secretary of the Lutheran Church in Denhoff before becoming a member of Grace Lutheran Church in McClusky.
Mr. Flatlie also leaves five sisters, Gudrun Nordlie, Emma Bredine and Bernice Werlinger, all of Harvey, Selma Swanson, Anamoose, and Norma Dietrich, Minot; two brothers, Palmer, Drake, and Bill, Valley City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Esther Thorn; and one brother, Clarence.
The family prefers memorials to American Cancer Society, Leukemia Society, Grace Lutheran Church or Denhoff Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers are Mark Nestegard, Garrett Rodrigue, Ray Rodrigue, the Rev. Michael Roehl, Shawn Kollodge and Dale Jorgensen.
Roger Grube
NEW SALEM -- Roger C. Grube, 76, New Salem, died Feb. 25, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. MST Friday at Peace Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Richard Herb officiating.
Roger was born Nov. 10, 1920, in New Salem, the son of Fred and Rena (Buckland) Grube. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received a purple heart. He farmed in the New Salem area for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Florence; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Eric and Jacqueline, Forman, Todd and Sheri, Burnsville, Minn., and Lane, Bismarck; two grandchildren, Tyler and Kaitlyn Grube; one sister and brother-in-law, Visda and Lawrence Canter, Denver; and two brothers and one sister-in-law, Milton, New Salem, and Clifford and Elsie, Indian Ola, Neb.
