HURDSFIELD -- Lawrence Eckman, 87, rural Hurdsfield, died Feb. 21, 1997, in the Harvey nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey. Burial will be in St. Cecilia Catholic Cemetery, Harvey.
He is survived by his wife, Lena, Harvey; one son, Dewain, Germantown, Ohio; one daughter, Diane Schimke, Hurdsfield; and two sisters, Marie Ehman, Harvey, and Bernice Alveshere, Jamestown.
Arnold Granlie
UNDERWOOD -- Arnold Granlie, 80, Underwood, died Feb. 22, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Augustana Lutheran Church, Underwood. Further arrangements are pending with Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood.

Duane C. Jarrett, 43, Winona, Minn., formerly of Bismarck, died Feb. 19, 1997, at his home. Arrangements are pending with Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck.
Bertha Fandrich
Bertha Fandrich, 89, 107 E. Bowen Ave., died Feb. 23, 1997, in her home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with burial in Hazen Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Bertha was born Dec. 19, 1907, in Hazen, the daughter of Jacob and Sophie (Richter) Zuern. She grew up and attended schools in Mercer County. She married John Fandrich, Feb. 4, 1932, at Bethel Congregational Church, Hazen. They farmed north of Hazen. John died in 1980. She moved to Bismarck in 1985.
Bertha was a caring person, and always made sure everyone was OK. She loved bible study and gardening.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, LaVerne and Hayden Hale, Bismarck; one sister, Christine King, Tampa, Fla.; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Jannette; eight sisters; and four brothers.
Ralph Durant
Ralph L. Durant, 82, Bismarck, died Feb. 22, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be at a later date.
Ralph L. Durant was born Dec. 29, 1914, at McKenzie, to Walter and Helen (Anderson) Durant. He was educated in Sterling rural schools. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp for three years and briefly in the U.S. Marine Corp. In 1945 he became a state employee. He worked at the State Penitentiary and prison farm in food service for 34 years. He married Irene Schramm, Dec. 7, 1938. They had one son, Donald, who died in 1967.
Ralph was a charter member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Bismarck. He also was a member of American Legion Lloyd Spetz Post No. 1. His hobbies were hunting, fishing and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Irene; four sisters, Alice Walgren and Ella Phelps, both of Seattle, Wash., Verna Sterling, Chehalis, Wash., and Ruby Turner, Tempe, Ariz.; and one brother, Jim Freshour, Tempe.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Henry and Ernest Durant, and Martin and Tony Freshour; two sisters, Shirley Wildfang and Thelma Nelson; and his son, Donald. (Bismarck Funeral Home)
Duane Jarrett
Duane C. Jarrett, 43, Winona, Minn., formerly of Bismarck, died Feb. 19, 1997, at his home. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, with the Rev. Erik Saxvik officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.
Duane was born Dec. 31, 1953, at Langdon, the son of Lyle C. and Beverly (Jardine) Jarrett. He moved with his family to Bismarck in 1963, where he was raised and educated. He entered the U.S. Marine Corp in 1972 and was discharged in 1974. Through the years he pursued his education at various colleges. Duane was a devoted uncle, and will be greatly missed by his 16 nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his mother, Beverly, Bismarck; his grandparents, Rudolph and Ruby Jardine, Osnabrock; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Barb Barnett, Nampa, Idaho, Trish Wolff, New Richmond, Wis., and Diane and Lance Seibel, Bismarck; and one brother, Dennis, Bismarck.
He was preceded in death by his father; one brother, Greg; and one brother-in-law, Dave Barnett.
Anton Morrell
Anton Morrell, 68, Pauls Valley, Okla., died Feb. 22, 1997, in the Pauls Valley hospital after a long illness. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Epiphany Church, Coon Rapids, Minn.

Walter Ruff
LEHR -- Walter Ruff, 81, Lehr, died Feb. 23, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lehr United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Keith Rice officiating. Burial will be in Lehr Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Walter was born Jan. 6, 1916, seven miles southeast of Lehr, the son of Jacob and Anna (Scherbenske) Ruff. He grew up there and received his elementary education in rural McIntosh County schools. Walter continued to live and farm with his family. He married Erna Goebel, Sept. 28, 1937, at Lehr. They returned to the Ruff family farm where they lived and farmed until 1939 when they moved to an adjacent farm home. In 1941 Walter's parents moved to Lehr, and he returned to take over the family farm. He farmed there for many years, operating a diversified farm. Along with raising grain crops in the 1950s, they started raising purebred Hereford cattle which he continued to do until 1984. He retired from farming and moved to Lehr in 1990, where he has lived since that time. Walter also worked for the McIntosh County ASCS office for more than 10 years as a surveyor. Mrs. Ruff preceded him in death on Dec. 2, 1984.
He was a member of Lehr United Methodist Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Jeanette Nickisch, Bismarck; one granddaughter, Daphne Nickisch and her husband, James B. Summers, Norman, Okla.; one grandson, Dirk Nickisch, Talkeetna, Alaska; three sisters, Edna Landseidel, Park Rapids, Minn., Erna Miller, Moorhead, Minn., and Frieda Bittner, Wishek; and one brother, Allen, Wishek.
He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.
Janice Miller
BELFIELD -- Janice Miller, 44, Belfield, died Feb. 23, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. MST Wednesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Belfield, with the Rev. John Guthrie officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. today at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, and will continue after 4 p.m. today at the church. A rosary will be said at 7:30 tonight at the church. Visitation also will be held at the church one hour before services.
Janice Alane Jurgens was born Nov. 3, 1952, in Dickinson, to Elmer and Martha (Cinder) Jurgens. She attended and graduated from Belfield High School in 1970. She graduated from Dickinson State College in 1974 with a degree in elementary education. On June 15, 1974, she married Wilbert Miller in Belfield. Before raising her family, Janice taught school in Fryburg and at St. Bernard's Elementary. Janice was a substitute teacher in Billings County for the past several years.
She was a member of Sugar and Spice Homemakers Club, American Legion Auxiliary and Christian Mothers Guild of St. Bernard's Church.
She is survived by her husband, Wilbert ``Binky"; two daughters, Kristy and Lindsey; one son, Brian, all of Belfield; her parents, Elmer and Martha Jurgens, Belfield; her future son-in-law, Ryan Mahoney, Billings, Mont.; one sister, Karen and Jeff Boshart, Charleston, Ill.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Jean, Marysville, Wash., David and Joan, Belfield, and Ken and Peggy, Dickinson; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends, including Laura Jurgens.

Mike Barkie

Melvin Flatlie
DENHOFF -- Melvin Flatlie, 85, Denhoff, died Feb. 23, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, McClusky, with the Rev. George Schuessler officiating. Burial will be in Denhoff Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, and will continue from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.
Melvin was born March 10, 1911, in New Germantown Township, near Martin, to Nels and Sigrid Flatlie, early Sheridan County homesteaders. He attended rural schools and then worked for Works Progress Administration during the Depression, before being employed by John Lindstrom of Denhoff. Agnes, daughter of John and Bertha Lindstrom, married Melvin in November 1937 in McClusky. Together they took over the Lindstrom property. This homestead has had only two operators since the Lindstroms settled the area in 1904.
Melvin and Agnes have two daughters and one son-in-law, Elaine Nestegard, Shoreview, Minn., and Mary Ann and Ray Rodrigue, LaCanada, Calif. The grandchildren are Mark Nestegard, Sandra Roehl, Lori Kollodge and Garrett Rodrigue. They also have three great-grandchildren, Shannon, Emily and Andrew Roehl.
Melvin contributed to many civic and charitable organizations. He was a Sheridan County Commissioner for 14 years, president of Denhoff Farmers Union Oil Co. for 29 years and served the Farmers Union County Organization for 30 years. He was also on the board of directors of Verendrye Electric for 10 years, Denhoff School Board for nine years and was a member of Farmers Home Administration Board.
During the 1950s he ran for state representative and state senator on the Democratic ticket. He served as the secretary of the Lutheran Church in Denhoff before becoming a member of Grace Lutheran Church in McClusky.
Mr. Flatlie also leaves five sisters, Gudrun Nordlie, Emma Bredine and Bernice Werlinger, all of Harvey, Selma Swanson, Anamoose, and Norma Dietrich, Minot, and two brothers, Palmer, Drake, and Bill, Valley City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Esther Thorne; and one brother, Clarence.
The family prefers memorials to American Cancer Society, Leukemia Society, Grace Lutheran Church or Denhoff Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers are Mark Nestegard, Garrett Rodrigue, Ray Rodrigue, the Rev. Michael Roehl, Shawn Kollodge and Dale Jorgensen.
