Peter Miller
RALEIGH -- Peter E. Miller, 84, Raleigh, died Feb. 14, 1997, in the Elgin hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Tuesday at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church, rural Raleigh, with burial in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Anna; three sons, Kenneth, Bismarck, Wilbert, Belfield, and Paul, Raleigh; two daughters, Carolyn Wells, Carson, and Emma Dubois, Thayer, Ill.; four brothers, Mike, Raleigh, Isador, Flasher, Adolph, Mandan, and Gabriel, Bismarck; and one sister, Agnes Lonning, Lennox, Mo. Walter Jans
Walter Jans, 77, 406 N. 17th St., died Feb. 13, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Dick Owens officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today and 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Walter was born Jan. 4, 1920, in Drake, the son of Henry and Rose (Shot) Jans. He grew up on a farm 13 miles southeast of Drake. Walter married Loretta Holzer, Sept. 27, 1971, in Bismarck. He worked for Atlas Inc. for 16 years and retired in 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta; one daughter, Janet Jans, Bismarck.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and four brothers.
Richard O'Neill
Richard O'Neill, 80, 305 Fourth Ave. N.E., Mandan, died Feb. 13, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Church of St. Joseph, with the Rev. Robert E. Feeney officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and until service time Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Sunday. A parish vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Richard was born Nov. 6, 1916, in Odense, the son of Daniel M. and Etta (Gager) O'Neill. He was raised and educated in the Odense area and lived there until 1939. He later moved to the Fort Rice area where he farmed for many years until moving to Mandan in the fall of 1989. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp from 1937-1939. Richard belonged to the Old Timers Pool Team and was a member of Moose Lodge.
He is survived by three sisters, Mildred O'Neill and Vivian Wetsch, both of Mandan, and Florence Staehnke, Crookston, Minn.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Owen and Rosella, Mandan, and Kenneth and Josephine, Fort Rice; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clarence and Daniel; and one sister, Lillian.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Joseph's School.
Ronald Berget
Ronald O. Berget, 89, died Feb. 15, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake.
Ronald O'Neil Berget was born Feb. 10, 1908, to Christ O. and Margith "Mary" (Vightol) Berget, on his parents' homestead. He attended school at Wiprud School No. 1. He worked on the farm, for a logging company in Michigan, on dairy farms and for a Chevrolet garage in Minnesota. Ronald married Clarissa Fylling on June 24, 1933, in Turtle Lake. They purchased his parents' homestead in 1934 and farmed until 1971, when they moved into Turtle Lake. They lived in Libby, Mont., for a time and returned to Turtle Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Clarissa; five sons and daughters-in-law, Reuben and Charlene, Sacramento, Calif., Charles and Janice, Libby, Larry and Judy, Bismarck, Russell and Sharon, Aurora, Colo., and Ron and Karen, Lindstrom, Minn.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Corrine and Bob Hoffman, Baldwin, Roselyn and Dan Casazza, Eureka, Mont., and Mary Ann and Dick Sheaffer, Madison, S.D.; 27 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Thelma Linder, Turtle Lake.
Ronald was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Roselle Gunn and Carla Berget; and one infant son, Donald. (Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn)

Lyland Breen
Lyland G. Breen, 90, a North Dakota pioneer, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, formerly of 408 N. Raymond St., died Feb. 16, 1997, in the nursing home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas E. Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.
Visitation will begin at noon today at Boelter Funeral Home, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 tonight. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.
Lyland was born March 17, 1906, the daughter of Herbert and Elsie (Nixon) Little, on the family homestead in the Baldwin area. She was raised and educated in Baldwin, and lived on the family farm until she married Harold J. Breen, Jan. 12, 1926, in Bismarck. They lived on a farm north of Bismarck until retiring to Bismarck in 1951.
Lyland worked with a 4-H Youth Group. She was a member of Catholic Daughters, St. Alexius Ladies Auxiliary and Elks. She loved playing cards, bridge, mending and patching and gardening.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Ruth, Williston; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Jean Kaizer, Bismarck, Carol and Everett Yonts, Longmont, Colo., Harolyn and Joseph Huerta, Santa Anna, Calif., and Rosalie and George Strauss, Longmont; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Lila Little, Bismarck; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Irma and George Hoff, Hoff, Mont., and Myrtle and Ray Lenihan, Fresno, Calif.; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers; one sister; one grandson; and one granddaughter.
Nancy Black Cloud
CANNON BALL -- Nancy Black Cloud, 88, Cannon Ball, died Feb. 15, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Cannon Ball School Gym, with the Rev. Norman Bluecoat officiating. Burial will be in Big Lake Cemetery, Cannon Ball.
Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the school gym.
Nancy was born Dec. 8, 1908, at Cannon Ball, the daughter of Antoine Two Shields and Lucy Rattling Trail. She attended school at Cannon Ball, Flandreau, S.D., and Fort Yates. She married Joe Yellow Hammer Sr. He preceded her in death. She married Narcisse Black Cloud. He died March 5, 1959. A homemaker all her life, she was an active member of Cannon Ball Congregational Church. She never learned to drive and enjoyed walking in her community. She did sewing and enjoyed making blankets, western shirts and star quilts. She was proud to have raised in her home Ron, Brad and Errol Yellow Hammer.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Blanche and Melvin White Eagle, Cannon Ball, Amelia Yellow Eyes, Fort Yates, and Naman Vick, Coalgate, Okla.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Fred Black Cloud, Cannon Ball, and Emerson and Irene Black Cloud; 33 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchldren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; four sisters; two brothers; seven children; and four grandchildren. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)
Catherine Saunders
Catherine Margaret Saunders, 89, St. Vincent's Care Center, died Feb. 15, 1997, in the nursing home. Services and burial will be held at a later date in Zwolle, La.
Catherine M. Saunders was born Feb. 9, 1908, in Germany. She came to the United States in 1912. She was raised in Altus, Ark. Catherine also attended nurses training after high school.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John E. and Christine, Moncks Corner, S.C., and James E. and Joyce, Monticello, Minn.; two grandchildren, Joshua and Morriah, both of Monticello; one sister, Pauline Leding, Fort Smith, Ark.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Gus and Josephine Dahlem, Kansas City, Kan., Joe and Erline Dahlem, Fort Smith, and John and Phyllis Dahlem, St. Louis, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Kathlene Hanson
JAMESTOWN -- Kathlene Hanson, 72, Jamestown, died Feb. 15, 1997, in her home. Services will be at noon Tuesday at Basilica of St. James, Jamestown, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Lisko Chapel, Jamestown, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A prayer service will begin at 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Kathlene A. Wilmart was born Nov. 4, 1924, at Jamestown, the daughter of George and Elma (Mohn) Wilmart. She was raised on the family farm near Ypsilanti. She attended elementary school in the Ypsilanti Township country school and graduated from St. John's Academy High School in Jamestown in 1942. Kathlene attended Valley City State University and graduated from Jamestown College. She earned her master's degree in special education from Northern State College, Aberdeen, S.D. Her teaching career encompassed 43 years, including schools in Winfield, Ypsilanti and Sidney townships, all near Jamestown, and also schools in Montpelier, Eldridge, St. John's Academy in Jamestown, and culminated with her retirement from Anne Carlsen Center for Children after teaching there for 17 years.
Kathlene was a member of Basilica of St. James, Jamestown, a member of St. James Tabernacle Society and Our Lady of the Rosary Circle. She also was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary of Jamestown and had been a past officer of the local and state DAVA, including past commander of both the local Jamestown Chapter No. 3 and the state DAV Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Retired Teachers Association, AARP and Jamestown Senior Citizens. Kathlene served numerous terms in the Silver-Haired Legislature, served on the Governor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities and served on the Mayor's Committee on the Handicapped in Jamestown.
She married Louis Hanson, Feb. 15, 1947, at St. Hubert's Catholic Church, Montpelier. They farmed near Montpelier for two years after they were married and then moved to a farm near Ypsilanti where they lived for 29 years until moving to their current home in Jamestown in 1977.
She is survived by her husband, Louis; one daughter, Diana Bagan, Mandan; one son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Dee Hanson, Bismarck; six grandchildren; one sister, Leola Ringuette, Ypsilanti; and one brother, Gene Wilmart, Jamestown.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one infant son.
Kathlene devoted her life to her grandchildren and to helping others.
Memorials may be directed to Jamestown Hospice.
Peter Miller
RALEIGH -- Services for Peter E. Miller, 84, Raleigh, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church, rural Raleigh, with the Rev. Kenneth Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Special music will be provided by Sandy Riehl, organist. He died Feb. 14, 1997, in the Elgin nursing home at the age of 84.
Serving as casket bearers will be Ivan Draskovic, Farley Ternes, Bob and Brian Christensen, Mark Vilhauer and Alvin Miller.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin. A rosary will be said at 7 tonight at the church.
Peter E. Miller was born Nov. 25, 1912, on the family farm near Raleigh to Egidius and Nathalia (Volk) Miller. He attended country school one mile south of St. Gertrude and helped his parents on the farm. Pete was united in marriage to Anna Kahl on Oct. 20, 1936, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Shields. They began their life together on a farm three miles south of Raleigh. In 1946, Pete established Miller Well Drilling, and in the late 1940s, a blacksmith shop. In 1947 he moved his home and family into Raleigh. Pete continued to operate his businesses and farm until selling the farm to his son, Paul, in 1979.
He enjoyed driving the countryside looking over the crops and what Mother Nature provided us. He was a member of St. Gertrude's Catholic Church, the Moose and Eagles clubs, and Raleigh Gun Club. Pete was cared for at home by his family until entering the Jacobson Memorial Care Center in Elgin on July 18, 1994.
He will be remembered by friends and family as one who could never say "no" when he was asked to take on a job.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Anna; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Jackie Miller, Bismarck, Wilbert and Janice, Belfield, and Paul, Raleigh; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Gene Wells, Carson, and Emma and James Dubois, Thayer, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Mike, Raleigh, Isador, Flasher, Adolph, Mandan, and Gabriel, Bismarck; and one sister, Agnes Lonning, Lennox, Mo.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter; and three sisters.

Lottie Taghon, 88, rural Mandan, died Feb. 15, 1997, at her home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7 tonight followed by a parish vigil at 7:30.
Lottie Preabt was born Sept. 4, 1908, in Canton, S.D. She was the daughter of the late John and Bertha (Schmidt) Preabt. She was raised and educated in rural Mandan. She married John Taghon, Jan. 11, 1930, and St. Joseph Church, Mandan. John died June 9, 1987. Lottie was a farm wife and homemaker who enjoyed her family and her home and garden.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Betty, Mandan; one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Matt Baron, Mandan; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ernest and Garnet Preabt, Minot, and Harley and Dorothy Preabt, Bismarck; two sisters, Rose Taghon, Mandan, and Edith Kopa, Centralia, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Dolores Wetzstein; one grandchild; and two sisters, Fern and Edna.
