Roger Russell
Roger Russell, 70, 2914 Manitoba Lane, Bismarck, died Dec. 5, 1996, at his home, after a brief but a courageous struggle with cancer. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Winston G. Titus of the Assembly of God Church officiating. Six dear friends will proudly carry their loyal and gentle friend to his final resting place at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
As a young child, Roger was raised on a homestead in southeastern Colorado. The family later moved to Louisburg, Kan., and then to Amarillo, Texas, where he was educated and grew up. In 1944 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served with the 37th Division 129th Infantry, K Co. as a combat veteran in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he re-enlisted and was sent to American-occupied Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1947.
Roger worked in the oil fields of Kansas, Texas, Montana and Wyoming. In 1963 he began Russell Drilling Co., Inc., which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1989. During recent years Roger worked and traveled as a consultant on drilling projects for various contractors throughout the country.
Roger's traits of character will always remain dear to those who knew him. No matter how dark, grim or dreary the situation, he always furnished positive, cheerful, hopeful and spiritual encouragement, believing that ``all things work out for the best." Generous and unselfish to a fault, he was the first to see and meet a need, always ready to inconvenience himself in order to reduce the pain of others. A soldier who served with Roger, recounted to us in a letter how he watched him trying to pull off boots and stockings that were stuck to his feet from blood and sores. He tried to get him to go back to the ``aid station." Roger's quiet reply was ``there weren't enough guys in the squad" and stayed.
Roger was preceded in death by his first wife, Elaine Gerstner, mother of James, John and Sheila. In 1958 Roger married Carol Jane Dockter. They had three children, Robin, Scott and Tracy.
Their first child preceded him in death at the age of 4.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Jane; three sons and two daughters-in-law, James and Cynthia, Fargo, John, Hays, Kan., and Scott and Cindy, Larkspur, Colo.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Ray Bosch, Gorham, Kan., and Tracy Lynn and Kevin Keller, Whitefish, Mont.; 13 grandchildren, all who want to grow up to be a cowboy like ``Pappa Roger," one great-granddaughter; one brother, James, Salem, Ore.; and four sisters, Ora Lee Brown and Peggy Lou Russell, both of Denver, and Virginia Cronenberg and JoAnn Sours, both of Grand Junction, Colo.
As we say goodbye to a husband, father and friend who was a member of a generation hardened by the Great Depression and tempered by war, we will always be grateful for the lessons he taught us about compassion, loving and sacrifice. There was no finer soldier, husband, father, grandfather or friend. Goodbye, father and friend, you will be forever loved and sadly missed. ``Oh death, where is they sting? Oh grave, where is they victory?"
