Joseph Hellman
GLEN ULLIN -- Joseph R. Hellman, 70, Glen Ullin, died Dec. 2, 1996, in Glen Ullin. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. MST Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at the church, where a wake service and rosary will be held at 7 tonight.

Joseph was born Aug. 24, 1926, in the St. Joe area. He was raised on the family farm and educated in a country school. He worked for farmers in the area until his marriage. On Jan. 11, 1949, he married Rose Marie Emter at Glen Ullin. He worked for farmers and at the creamery for a short time. Joe was a carpenter the rest of his working days, building many homes in the Glen Ullin area. Rose Marie died June 23, 1989.

His hobbies included woodworking and studying family history and genealogy. Joe loved his grandchildren and they held a very special place in his heart.

He was a member of Glen Ullin Lions, Knights of Columbus and Germans From Russia.

He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Harvey, Dickinson, Michael and Sheila, Glen Ullin, and Delbert and Janet, Williston; three daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Richard Schirado, Glen Ullin, and Bonita and Bill Meuchel, and Sharon and Henry Wetzel, all of New Salem; 15 grandchildren; one step-grandchild; three sisters, Mary Wolf, Glen Ullin, Clara Lagler, Scio, Ore., and Claudia Hellman, Mount Angel, Ore.; seven brothers, Tom and Ernest, both of Glen Ullin, Jack, Eugene, Math and Valentine, all of Albany, Ore., and Jim, Salem, Ore.; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Hellman, Salem, Ore., and Maggie Hellman, Dickinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Ronald; and two brothers, Lawrence and George. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin)

Dennis Schmitz
DICKINSON -- Services for Dennis Raymond Schmitz, 51, Dickinson, formerly of Elgin, will be at 10:30 a.m. MST Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church, New Leipzig, with the Rev. Dennis Schafer officiating.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A rosary and vigil service will begin at 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be his nephews, Sheldon, Shawn, Stuart, Michael, Garret, Ethan and Nicholas Schmitz, Paul Eslinger, and Casey and Aaron Alt. Honorary bearers will be his nieces, Tara and Jessica Schmitz, Lindsey and Kayla Dettermann and Jill King.

Dennis Raymond Schmitz was born April 3, 1945, to Raymond and Patricia (Gaugler) Schmitz, at Elgin. He grew up on his parents farm 15 miles south of Elgin and attended Pretty Rock School. Dennis graduated from Elgin High School in 1963 and attended Dickinson State College where he attained a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education. He married Sandy Alt, June 30, 1966, at St. John's Catholic Church in New Leipzig. He taught in Mott for one year, then moved to Elgin where he taught and coached football for three years. In 1970 they moved to Baton Rouge, La., where Dennis obtained his master's degree in mathematics. In the fall of 1971, they moved to Belfield where Dennis taught and was the senior high prinicpal. He taught at Diablo Valley College in Pittsburg, Calif., after their move there in 1990. In 1995 they moved to Dickinson. Dennis died Dec. 1, 1996, in the Dickinson hospital after a long illness.

Dennis loved fishing and spending time with his family. He will be remembered by all the lives he touched as a teacher, coach and principal, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his parents, Raymond and Patricia Schmitz, Elgin; his wife, Sandy, Dickinson; one son, Patrick, Bismarck; two daughters and one son-in-law, Kimberly and Dale Bren, Elgin, and Heather Schmitz, Bismarck; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne and Bobbi, Center, Gene and Sharon, Culbertson, Mont., and Tracy and SuAnn, Bismarck; and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Karen and Rick Witkowski, Elgin, LeAnn and Brad Dettermann, Spokane, Wash., and Holli Schmitz, St. Paul, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Art Alt.

A memorial will be established by the family.

James Botten
James Warren Botten, 76, Hemet Valley, Calif., formerly of Bentley, died July 21, 1996, in Hemet Valley. Services were July 28 in Redlands, Calif., with burial in Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy; one son, Peter, Redlands, one daughter, Kay Palmer, San Diego, Calif.; and one brother, Ralph, La Jolla, Calif.

Frank Altman
Frank Clifford Altman, 86, Salem, Ore., formerly of Carson, died July 13, 1996, in Salem. Private services were held, with burial in Sunset Hills Memorial Park, Salem.

He is survived by two sons, Bob, Salem, and Gary, Tillamook; and one sister, May Botten, Eugene.

Florence Jackson
REEDER -- Services for Florence A. Jackson, 54, Reeder, will be at 10:30 a.m. MST Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Reeder. She died Nov. 30, 1996, in the Hettinger hospital.

Kap Jundt
Kap Jundt, 82, Bismarck, died Dec. 3, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

David Nelsen
LEEDS -- David L. Nelsen, 65, Leeds, died Dec. 2, 1996, in a Minot hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Leeds Lutheran Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; one daughter, Linda Snyder, Arvilla; one son, Scott, Minneapolis; his mother, Frances Nelsen, Leeds; and two brothers, Larry and Sid, both of Leeds. (Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds)

John Ebertz
JAMESTOWN -- John Ebertz, 67, Jamestown, died Dec. 1, 1996, in his home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Basilica of St. James, Jamestown, with burial in Jamestown Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Glory; two daughters, Elizabeth Herner, Puyallup, Wash., and Ann Johnson, Burnsville, Minn.; five sons, Christopher, Bismarck, Peter, Wasilla, Alaska, Paul, Phoenix, Patrick and Dr. Michael, both of Bloomington, Minn.; one brother, Joe, Jamestown; and two sisters, Marie Clapp, Jamestown, and Anna Mae Weiler, Bismarck. Margaret Jacobson
WILDROSE -- Margaret Jacobson, 69, Wildrose, died Dec. 3, 1996, in the Williston hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, Wildrose. Further arrangements are pending at Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Pete Anton
BELFIELD -- Pete N. Anton, 67, Belfield, died Dec. 1, 1996, in his home. Services will be at 10 a.m. MST Thursday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Belfield, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Dickinson.

He is survived by his wife, Rose; one brother, Steve, Huntley, Mont.; and three sisters, Suzie Raab, Lena Kostelecky and Regina Reisenauer, all of Missoula, Mont. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Lillian Fossum
MADDOCK -- Lillian Fossum, 75, Maddock, died Dec. 3, 1996, in the Grand Forks hospital. Arrangements are pending at Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock.

Edward Kuntz
Edward R. Kuntz Jr., 44, Bismarck, died Dec. 4, 1996, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with Deacon Al Schwindt officiating.

Edward was born Aug. 23, 1952, in Bismarck, the son of Edward and Rose (Vogel) Kuntz. He grew up in Moffit and attended school there. He worked in the oil fields for 10 years, drove truck for Baumgartner Oil for several years and was presently employed at Central Dakota Laundry in Bismarck. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by one daughter, Wendy Kuntz, Linton; his parents, Edward and Rose Kuntz, Moffit; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Paulette Siirtola, Mandan, and Pat and Nick Branesky, Tioga; one brother, Clem, Moffit; and his fiance, Linda Huffman and her children, Stephanie and Melissa.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; and one niece.

Dorothy Opp
GLEN ULLIN -- Dorothy Opp, 45, Glen Ullin, died Dec. 5, 1996, in Glen Ullin. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday at the church, where a vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Dorothy Schafer was born Dec. 8, 1950, at Richardton, to Franz and Elizabeth (Maershbecker) Schafer. She was raised in Glen Ullin and educated in Glen Ullin schools. She graduated from high school in 1968 and worked at a grocery store for a short time. She began working for MDU in Glen Ullin, a position she held for the last 25 years. On March 21, 1996, she married Marvin Opp at Mandan.

Dorothy loved the outdoors, cross country skiing, walking, jogging and even hunting. Her other favorite pasttime was working with the greyhound dogs she helped raise. Dorothy's battle with cancer came to an end Dec. 5.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin; one daughter, Dawn Emter, Glen Ullin; one grandson, Mathew Emter, Glen Ullin; one stepson, Kevin Opp, Glen Ullin; her father, Franz Schafer, Glen Ullin; two brothers, Robert, Bismarck, and Doug, Hebron; and six sisters, Darlene Meyers, Coon Rapids, Minn., Doreen Hartman, Killdeer, Bonnie Kuntz, Hebron, Shirley Schwab, Everett, Wash., Karen Goetzfried, Mandan, and Joan Kinnischtzke, Glen Ullin.

She was preceded in death by her mother; and one sister, Claudia Erhardt.

Kiaran Dooley
Kiaran Dooley, 88, 522 W. Thayer Ave., died Dec. 4, 1996, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Saturday and 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a vi gil celebration and prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday. Further arrangements are pending.

Lyle Young
DEVILS LAKE -- Lyle E. Young, 76, Devils Lake, died Dec. 4, 1996, in the Devils Lake nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake.

He is survived by his wife, Flora; one son, Mark, Portland, Ore.; three daughters, Diane Crowston, Jamestown, Nancy Burdick, West Fargo, and Karen Kreil, Bismarck; and one sister, Dorothy Schonberger, Des Moines, Wash. (Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake)

Martha Scherbenske
JAMESTOWN -- Martha Scherbenske, 80, Jamestown, died Dec. 4, 1996, in Fargo. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Jamestown, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown.

She is survived by one son, Roger Trautman, Goodrich; two daughters, Sharleen Albrecht, Buchanan, and Judy Wescom, Jamestown; four brothers, Peter Hofmann Jr., Fred Hofmann, Jake Hofmann and Bennie Hofmann, all of Medina; and three sisters, Rose Geigle, Leah Hins and Bertha Moos, all of Jamestown. DICKINSON -- Brandyn Tyler Young, the infant son of Isaac Gary III and Penny Young, Dickinson, died Dec. 3, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Carl Larson
WILLISTON -- Carl R. Larson, 78, Williston, died Dec. 5, 1996, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Union Church, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

Adam Metzger
JAMESTOWN -- Adam Metzger, 93, Jamestown, died Dec. 4, 1996, in Jamestown. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Jamestown, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

He is survived by one son, Elroy, East Grand Forks, Minn.; two daughters, Loverna Hofmann, Medina, and Darlene Enzminger, Bismarck; one brother, Theodore, Billings, Mont.; and one sister, Rachel Chock, Jamestown. (Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown)

Gary Sullivan
Gary Michael Sullivan, 55, 3223 Winnipeg Drive, Bismarck, died Dec. 6, 1996, in his home. Services will be at 10-30 a.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jo Olson officiating.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Boelter Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Gary was born Dec. 31, 1940, at Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Russell and Sigrid (Rostad) Sullivan. Gary attended Sioux City public schools. He graduated from Central High School with the class of 1959.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1959. He successfully completed the training as a warhead prefire specialist at the Seven A NCO Academy. He served his tour of duty in Germany and was honorably discharged on Aug. 27, 1962.

He worked in the Sioux City area for 10 years as a sales representative. On Aug. 1, 1965, Gary and Dianne Lucille Forney were married at St. John's Lutheran Church, Sioux City. They moved to Bismarck in 1972, and Gary worked for MARC. The couple established Team Laboratory Chemical Corp. in 1977. Gary believed in giving everyone a chance. He treated everyone as family.

He is survived by his wife, Dianne; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Jennifer, Sauk Rapids, Minn.; one granddaughter, Madeline, Sauk Rapids; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Tracy, San Jose, Calif.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Conrad Coberly, Suwanee, Ga., and Linda and Gary Fischer, Truckee, Calif.; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Arlynn and Byron O'Connor, Sioux City; his stepmother, Helen Sullivan, Sioux City; his in-laws, Jon and Lynda Forney, Vicki and Ken Ippensen, all of Nebraska, Susan and Jerry Baker, Wyoming, and Patricia Wike, California; one aunt; two uncles; nieces and nephews; many cousins; Gary's sales representatives and office personnel of TEAM LAB.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and several aunts and uncles.

The family prefers memorials to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Mary Klein
Mary A. Klein, 90, Mandan, died Dec. 5, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Church, Hague, with the Rev. Leonard Eckroth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.

Mary was born Aug. 22, 1906, in Hague, the daughter of Jacob and Eva Marie (Silbernagel) Mitzel. She was raised and educated at Hague. On Nov. 23, 1925, she married Tony Klein in Hague. They had been residents of Mandan since 1990.

She was a member of Hague Altar Society and belonged to Mandan Golden Age Club Kitchen Band.

She is survived by her husband, Tony; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Francis and Grace, and Gary, all of Bismarck, Richard and Sally, Sylvania, Ohio, and Dave and Sharon, Mandan; two daughters and one son-in-law, Elenora and Ed Feist, Spokane, Wash., and Angie Markwed, Bismarck; 22 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Adam Mitzel, Mobridge, S.D., and Joe and Leo Mitzel, both of Sun City, Ariz.; and five sisters, Rose Werlinger, Fargo, Barbara Welder, Mobridge, Evelyn Jung, Valley City, Frances Volk, Ipswich, S.D., and Ellen Gabriel, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Donald; two brothers, Frank and Edward; and one sister, Agatha.

The family prefers memorials to St. Alexius Hospice.
