Clara Bentsen
HETTINGER -- Clara M. Bentsen, 78, Hettinger, died Dec. 25, 1996, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Tuesday at Hettinger Lutheran Church, with burial in Hettinger Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Walter; two sons, Burnell, Bakersfield, Calif., and Arlan, Hettinger; three daughters, Joann Barth, Winton, Calif., Janell Strand, Hettinger, and June Whittet, Scranton; and one sister, Agnes Hutts, Spokane, Wash. (Walby Chapel, Hettinger)
Andrey Chalyi
Andrey Aleksandrovich Chalyi, 16, Kaliningrad, Russia, a former exchange student at Bismarck High School, died Dec. 20, 1996, in Kaliningrad, of a heart attack caused by a previously unknown congenital heart defect.
Andrey is survived by his parents, Aleksander and Elena; and his brother, Vadim, all of Kaliningrad.
Lloyd Sinness
WILLISTON -- Lloyd Sinness, 76, Williston, died Dec. 20, 1996, in Boise, Idaho. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Everson Funeral Home, Williston.
He is survived by two sons, Steven and Greg, both of Williston; two brothers, Carroll, Williston, and Donald, Bismarck; and one sister, Olive Borden, Minneapolis.
Bob Frei
HAZEN -- Bob Frei, 46, Hazen, died Dec. 24, 1996, in his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Hazen, with the Rev. James Reardon officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Bob was born Aug. 22, 1950, in Dickinson, a son of Philip and Ann (Weidner) Frei. He was raised on the family farm northeast of Halliday, graduating from Halliday High School in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army from July 1969 to February 1971, with a tour of duty in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division. On June 24, 1971, he married Marlene Pavlicek at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson. Bob attended North Dakota State College of Science at Wahpeton from 1974-1976, graduating with an associate degree in electrical technology. The family moved to Hazen in 1976 and Bob began work at Leland Olds Station near Stanton. Bob was an employee there until the time of his death.
He was a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church, Hazen, and had served on the board of Hazen Winter Sports Association for six years, and on the board of Knife River Care Center, Beulah, for three years. Bob enjoyed fishing and spending time with his fishing buddies.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene; two sons, Jason, a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, Carlsbad, Calif., and Dan, attending UND in Grand Forks; his parents, Philip and Ann Frei, Halliday; six sisters and brothers-in-law, LouAnn and Richard Engwicht, Judson, Marylene and Delmar Weidner, Killdeer, LouCinda and Edwin Martin, Halliday, Carol and Donald Sitter, Minot, Lynnae and Harlan Weidner, Beulah, and Susan and Richard Pelton, Killdeer; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronald and Milda, Beulah, and Larry and Sarah, Halliday; and numerous nieces and nephews. Kent Higgins
Kent A. Higgins, 57, Bismarck, died Dec. 20, 1996, at his home. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck.
Kent was born Oct. 2, 1939, at Mandan, the son of Milton K. and Irene Franks Higgins. He was raised and educated in the Mandan and Bismarck areas and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1957. He attended Harvard University and University of North Dakota. He received a law degree from UND School of Law. He was engaged in the public and private practice of law, and served as a regional public defender, court referee, and on various committees of the bench and bar of North Dakota. He was active in the local Democratic Party, a member of the Unitarians, and served on many civic boards.
He is survived by his mother, Irene Higgins, Bismarck; one sister and brother-in-law, Judy and John Devney, Mahtomedi, Minn.; one brother, Bruce, Spokane, Wash.; one niece and two nephews, Elizabeth, John and Joseph; his former wife, Alice "Sue" Higgins, Bismarck; her daughter, Rebecca Lane, Topeka, Kan. Therese Gustin
Therese Marie Gustin, 57, Arlington, Va., died Dec. 21, 1996, in the Hospice of Northern Virginia.
She is survived by her husband, David Gustin; and one son, Christopher, Arlington.
David Gustin, formerly of Mandan, is the son of Pauline Gusting, Mandan, and brother to Al and Dennis Gustin, Mandan, Pat Boehm, Mandan, Carol Wehri, Hebron, and Judy Smith, Omaha, Neb.
Services will be Monday in McLean, Va., with burial in Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday.
Jacob Groszhans
Services for Jacob Groszhans, 92, Ashley, will be at 11 a.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley, with the Rev. Martin Simmons officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He died Dec. 25, 1996, in the Ashley hospital.
Visitation will begin one hour before services at the church.
Jacob Groszhans was born Aug. 4, 1904, to Jacob and Friedericka (Litz) Groszhans at Friedenstal, Bessarabia, South Russia. In 1910 the family sailed to America. They located on a farm south of Eureka, S.D. for three years. In 1913 the family moved moved to a farm south of Danzig where Jacob worked on the family farm. He attended school in Danzig.
Jacob was married to Emma Iszler, June 9, 1929, at Trinity Lutheran Church, south of Danzig. They made their home on a farm two miles south of Danzig. They farmed there raising small grains and livestock. They had three sons. Emma died April 15, 1963. Jacob continued to live and work on the family farm. On Oct. 1, 1967, he married Ruth (Haerter) Klipfel at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley. They made their home in Ashley while he continued to farm. Ruth died July 1, 1976. Jacob retired from farming in 1984. He entered Ashley Medical Center Apartments in 1990 and the Ashley Medical Center Nursing Home in 1994.
He enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing and woodworking.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Ashley Senior Citizens.
The family prefers memorials to Ashley Medical Center, 612 Center Ave. N., Ashley, N.D. 58413, and Zion Lutheran Church, 112 S.E. First St., Ashley, N.D. 58413.
Oscar Swenson
HETTINGER -- Services for Oscar F. Swenson, 89, Hettinger, will be at 11 a.m. MST Monday at Hettinger Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Robert Boxrud officiating. Burial will be in Hettinger Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger, where a family service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
Serving as casketbearers are Orven, Orval, Nathan and Erik Swenson, Gary and Geir Gabrielson and Mark Zidon. All friends are considered honorary bearers.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
Oscar Fredrick Swenson was born Dec. 23, 1907, at Pine River, Minn., to Erik and Johanna (Eklof) Swenson. He moved with his parents in 1911 to a homestead north of Haynes in Kansas City Township, Adams County. He attended school in Adams County at the Kansas City No. 1 country school. He took a short course in auto mechanics at the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo and a short course in diesel engineering in Des Moines, Iowa. He worked in construction and commercial fishing, and any jobs available in Florida and Iowa during the 1930s. In 1938, Oscar was working for Adams County AAA, now ASC. In 1940 he was manager of Mercer County ASC. He was united in marriage to Norma Buttler, Jan. 2, 1942, at Evansville, Minn. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 25, 1942. Oscar was discharged on Aug. 13, 1943, and returned to Adams County. Oscar and Norma moved to her parents farm in Cedar Butte Township where they farmed for 40 years and raised their family. They retired in 1985 and traveled extensively visiting Scandinavian countries and every state except Hawaii. Oscar suffered a stroke in April 1996 and spent four weeks in May at a rehab hospital in Grand Forks. On July 11, 1996, he was admitted to Hillcrest Care Center in Hettinger. He passed from this life there on Dec. 25, 1996, at the age of 89 years, 2 days.
Oscar served on many local and county boards including the Adams County Selective Service, FHA, Lemmon Federal Credit Union, Coop Store and Adams Farm Mutual Insurance Boards. He taught Sunday school and served as a deacon at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lemmon. Oscar was a member of Hettinger Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Norma; two sons and daughters-in-law, Orven and Deborah, Fargo, and Orval and Renee, Grand Forks; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Karen and Gary Gabrielson, Colorado Springs, Colo., Carol Hintz, Helena, Mont., and Twila and Mark Zidon, Platteville, Wis.; two brothers, P.G. ``Gus," Hettinger, and Christian, Lindsborg, Kan.; one sister, Linnea Forthun, Hettinger; three grandsons, 10 granddaughters; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Swen; and one sister, Margaret Mahlberg.
Dwain Draerger
NAPOLEON -- Dwain A. Draeger, 71, Napoleon, died Nov. 29, 1996, in the Wishek hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Napoleon American Legion Hall, with the Rev. Brad Stoltenow officiating. Burial will be in Zion Reformed Cemetery, rural Streeter.
Special music will be provided by Jean Lang, organist. Family eulogist for the service will be Mark Spitzer, with a special reading by Shanna Draeger-Patchen.
Pallbearers will be Earl Heck, Bert Spitzer, Selmer Spitzer, Mark Spitzer, Bruce Spitzer and Bruce Draeger.
Visitation will begin one hour before services at the Legion Hall.
Dwain was born April 8, 1925, at Napoleon, the son of William and Hilda (Starkey) Draeger. He was raised in Napoleon and received his education in Napoleon Public Schools, graduating from Napoleon High School in 1944. He entered the U.S. Army and served overseas at Guadalcanal, the Philippines and Japan during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Napoleon. He was married to Elsie Spitzer, Aug. 15, 1947, at Napoleon. They lived in Bismarck where Dwain was employed at Dakota Electric. He later managed the Sherwin-Williams paint store. They returned to Napoleon in 1956, where they have lived since that time. Dwain purchased Wentz Furniture, operating it as Draeger Furniture until 1975. He and his wife, Elsie, started a family restaurant knows as the Big D at Lake Isabel, which he was currently operating with his son, Keith.
He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher. He served as president of the Napoleon School Board, and was a member of Napoleon Lion's Club and American Legion. He also served as a Boy Scout leader for several years.
Dwain will be missed by his family and many friends. He enjoyed visiting with friends around the coffee table. He and Elsie loved to attend auction sales throughout the area. They also enjoyed traveling and made their winter home at Las Vegas.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Keith, Lake Isabel, Darrell Draeger and Shirley Romej, Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Terry and Jody, Anchorage, Alaska; five grandchildren, Shanna Draeger-Patchen, Megan, Terri Lynn, David Draeger and Robbie Romej.

Golde Klusmann
Golde Vera Klusmann, 82, Lennox, S.D., formerly of New Salem, died peacefully in her sleep, Nov. 30, 1996, in Lennox. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Wednesday at Peace Church, New Salem, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will begin one hour before services at the church.
Golde Vera Stayton was born Oct. 8, 1914, the daughter of Frank W. and Lena (Petrich) Stayton. As an infant she moved with her family to Butler, S.D., and as a child to Scranton. They moved to New Salem in 1930, where she graduated from New Salem High School in 1932. On Sept. 7, 1934, she married Wilbur H. Klusmann, at Glendive, Mont. They lived in New Salem where he owned the John Deere dealership. In 1960 they moved to Denver, and in 1966, to Brush, Colo. She was employed as a dietary aide at the nursing home in Brush from 1966-1977. In 1979, they moved to Lennox, where she had resided since. Wilbur died Nov. 26, 1994. She became a resident of Lennox Good Samaritan Center Nov. 29, 1994.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, JoAnn and Fred Petich, Denver, JerryLou and Edward Landis, San Jose, Calif., and Penny Golden, Lennox; one son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Delphi, Lennox; nine grandchildren, Renee Frost, Denise Cheek, Elizabeth Amlin, Carolyn Jenichen, Scott, Mark and Carla Landis, Jay Klusmann and Jodi Klusmann; eight great-grandchildren, Kelsi, Tyler, Benjamin and Zachery Klusmann, Michaela and Jason Jenichen, and twins, Jaclyn and Jessica Amlin; one brother and sister-in-law, Vern A. and Dorothy Stayton, New Salem; and her nieces and nephews.
