Visitation, with a closed casket, will begin at the church one hour before services.
Grant was born April 19, 1912, in Bismarck, to Willet B. and Juanita (Philps) Hartley. He attended elementary and high schools in Bismarck. He met Ruth Gundlach in Bismarck, and they were married June 14, 1933. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this year. They had their home built in 1954-1955 and lived there for almost 42 years.
The son of the first automobile mechanic in Bismarck and longtime engineer of the Bismarck water plant, Grant was naturally mechanically inclined. In his early years, he rebuilt cars and motorcycles, and built and crashed his own plane. He worked as a plumber's assistant, as a carrier transporting mail from the Bismarck Post Office to the Bismarck airport, an athletic coordinator and referee for archery, shooting, badminton, volleyball and basketball, and a collector-repossessor for Montgomery Ward.
Grant went to work for the Soo Line Railroad as a locomotive fireman in 1942, stoking steam engines by hand in order to get a job on the Northern Pacific Railroad, which had automatic stokers on their engines. He worked on the Northern Pacific, later Burlington Northern, from 1942-1977, retiring after 35 years. He worked on switch engines, north and south branch lines, and main line passenger and freight from Mandan to Dickinson as a fireman, then as an engineer going from steam to diesel-electric locomotives. Grant was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers.
He was an ardent hunter in the 1930s and 1940s, a fisherman in the 1950s, an RV'er in the 1960s and 1970s, and a devoted caregiver to Ruth in the 1980s and on, until Alzheimer's disease overcame him in the 1990s. Grant had many hobbies. He was a first-rate auto mechanic, woodworker and an all-around tinkerer willing to tackle any job. He had a drive that required him to keep himself busy and a curiosity that led to new concepts and ideas. Many people in the community benefited from that drive, as he was always willing to help others. Simply stated, he has been described as a good man. There are few better tributes.
He had a longtime dream of establishing a railroad museum in Mandan. He focused his drive after retirement into meeting that goal. With help from many people in the Mandan area, the dream became a reality. His pride in that accomplishment was evident in every visit to the museum. He loved to give children of all ages rides in the parade train he helped acquire for the museum. And he loved to share his railroad experiences with anyone who would listen.
Grant is survived by his wife, Ruth; two daughters and one son-in-law, Joan Anderson, Mandan, and Wanda and James Esser, Duluth, Minn.; one son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Dorothy, Kent, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild. Grant was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald and William.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Video Ministry for Shut-ins at First United Methodist Church, Mandan, 212 Second Ave., N.W., Mandan, American Heart Association or the charity of the giver's choice. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)
