Larry G. Selland, 59, Boise, Idaho, formerly of Rugby, died Dec. 5, 1996, at his home from melanoma cancer. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST Thursday at First United Methodist Church ``Cathedral of the Rockies" at 11th and Franklin Streets, Boise. Burial will be in Dry Creek Cemetery, Boise.

Delores Spitzer
Delores Spitzer, 69, Kensal, died Dec. 8, 1996, in Carrington. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church, Kensal. Burial will be in Kensal Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Lester, Kensal; two sons, Quentin and Reed, both of Kensal; two daughters, Marlene Meier, Carbondale, Ill., and Lorie Ruff, Bismarck; two brothers, Bernard and Kenneth Kramer, both of Kensal; and two sisters, Lora Jean Kleven, East Grand Forks, Minn., and Judy Sund, Jamestown. Margaret Moser
Margaret M. Moser, 87, Medcenter One Care Center, Mandan, died Dec. 8, 1996, in the nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Margaret Anderst was born June 17, 1909, in Glen Ullin, the daughter of Theodore and Elizabeth (Schafer) Anderst. She was raised and educated in Glen Ullin and Missoula, Mont. She married Anton J. Moser Feb. 3, 1930, in Mandan.
Margaret was a member of American Legion Auxiliary and Degree of Honor.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Helen, Mandan; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia and Ken Hermanson, Dolores Rowe and Bunny and Gary Greig, all of Mandan; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Anton who died Aug. 17, 1993; three brothers, Bill, Thomas and John Anderst; and two sisters, Viola Moffett and Susie McGuire. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)
Travis Haakedahl
Travis Haakedahl, 60, Dickinson, died Dec. 8, 1996, in Glendive, Mont. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. MST Wednesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson, with the Revs. Steve Tangen and Denise McKennett officiating. Music will be provided by Jan and Brian Knutson, soloists, Helene MacDonald, organist, and Barb Arneson, pianist. Burial will be in Dickinson Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at the church one hour before services.
Travis was born Jan. 4, 1936, in Crosby, to Gunsten and Louella (Schafer) Haakedahl. He graduated from Crosby High School. He received degrees in elementary education and speech pathology at Minot State College. He also earned a masters degree in educational administration from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He had been an associate professor of education at Dickinson State University since 1969.
Travis was active in Dickinson Chamber of Commerce, where he served as president in 1984-85, as North Dakota Centennial Commission President in 1986, and Roughrider Commission president in 1991-92. He received the Silver Spur Award in 1985, the GNDA Community Leadership Award in 1985 and was Outstanding Director of the Year in 1983.
He also served on several chamber committees, including Northern Plains Heritage Festival Committee, Military Affairs Committee and Special Projects Committee. He was instrumental in the development of Prairie Outpost Park. He had been a member of Elks since 1970 and served as Inner Guard in 1979-80, Exalted Ruler in 1984-85 and District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler West in 1996. In addition to his involvement in community affairs, Travis enjoyed his Country Kitchen Coffee Group, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Sue; one son and daughter-in-law, Erik and Estela, Rapid City, S.D.; one daughter, LeeAnn Haakedahl, Bismarck; two grandchildren, Zackary and Alexis; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Arden and Gail Sundheim, Chicago, and Bruce and Marlys Haakedahl, Salinas, Calif.; one brother-in-law, Phil Campbell, Rapid City; and one aunt, Chloe Elmgren, Mankato, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dawn Campbell; and an infant brother, Bruce.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to DSU Foundation, 291 Campus Drive, Box 286, Dickinson, N.D. 58601-4896.
Shirley Peterson
Shirley E. Peterson, 60, Mandan, died Dec. 9, 1996, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be at noon Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 7 tonight, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30.
Shirley was born March 18, 1936, in Denbigh, the daughter of Eric and Bertha (Cornish) Schmidt. She was raised and educated in the Granville area and married James M. Peterson, Sept. 15, 1953, in Velva. They lived in various locations in Montana, Wyoming and North Dakota before moving to Mandan in 1962. She enjoyed flowers, reading, sewing, crossword puzzles and especially loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. James died Jan. 7, 1978.
Shirley will be sincerely missed by those who survive her, including two daughters and sons-in-law, LaRae and James Mitchusson, Mandan, and Sherri and Daniel Samuelson, Bismarck; four sons and two daughters-in-law, James, Kansas City, Mo., Richard, Spirit Lake, Iowa, Douglas and Brenda, and Kevin and Jacki, all of Mandan; seven grandchildren, Samantha and Allan Peterson, Michael Lee and Brittany Marie Peterson, and Shawn, Brian and Jonathan Samuelson; one sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and LaVerne Eide, Red Wing, Minn.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Julius, Mandan, and Larry and Rhonda, Aberdeen, S.D.; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Stanley and Donna Peterson, Redmond, Ore., and Marvin Peterson, San Luis Obispo, Calif.; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Sis and Leo Schumacher, Mesa, Ariz., and Grace and John Weninger, Minot; and special friends, Annie Hohbein and Denise Starck.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; her son, Virgil Lee Peterson; and her brother, Fredrick Schmidt.

Lucille Stowell
Lucille Stowell, 81, Bismarck, died Dec. 7, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Selby United Methodist Church, with burial in Selby Memorial Gardens.

Arvid Johnson
WILTON -- Arvid E. Johnson, 84, Wilton, died Dec. 10, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sunne Lutheran Church, Wilton, with the Rev. Paul Schauer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Arvid was born Dec. 29, 1911, in Wilton, the son of Louis and Hannah (Backman) Johnson. He lived his entire life in the Wilton area. Arvid married Myrna Williams, Sept. 27, 1936. He worked as a farmer and a miner in the Wilton area. He served on several boards, including township, school, church, senior citizens and the Farm Bureau. He also was a member of the rural fire department.
He is survived by his wife, Myrna; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eldo and Marilyn, Mandan, and Archie and Alice, Bismarck; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mavis and Duane Olsen, Mandan, and Marie and Ralph Carter, Covelo, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Curt, Tim, Mark and Dan Johnson, Kathy Narum, JoAnn Schmidt, LaVon Olsen, DeLane Doxtader, and LaDean Olsen; 13 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Edna McAnaw, Sacramento, Calif., Lorraine Powell, Packwood, Wash., Irene Anderson, Wilton, and Wilma Niebauer, Seattle; and four brothers, Edwin Johnson, Roseville, Calif., Rudolph Speten and Orville Speten, both of Wilton, and Henry Speten, North Fork, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alf and Louis; and one sister, Nan Mathison.
The family prefers memorials to Sunne Lutheran Church Cemetery or Wilton Senior Citizens Center.
Emma Fischer
Emma O. Fischer, 101, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, died Dec. 11, 1996, in the nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Stenslie officiating. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Boelter Funeral Home, and will continue at the chapel one hour before services.
Emma Keel was born Feb. 14, 1895, at Rochester, Minn., the daughter of Nels A. and Anna (Anderson) Keel. She lived with her family in Rochester until she was 5. They moved to the farm that her parents homesteaded near Turtle Lake. She attended rural school (Malcolm School) for eight years. She lived at home until her marriage to Frank M. Fischer in 1915 at Washburn. They homesteaded northeast of Underwood for 15 years. They then farmed northwest of Turtle Lake until March 1934 when Frank died. The family moved into Turtle Lake where Emma was a seamstress until 1953. She moved to Bismarck in 1953 and was hostess for Gold Seal Co. until her retirement in 1970. She moved to Crescent Manor in 1973. In 1991, she moved to Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center.
Emma had attended Trinity Lutheran Church.
She is survived by five daughters and three sons-in-law, Violet and Lloyd Houstman, and Ann Broeckel, all of Bismarck, Joyce and Ted Hieb, Phoenix, June Thoreson, Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Jean and Dale Coleman, Baldwin; one son and daughter-in-law, Frank N. and Marvel, Jamestown; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Elizabeth Hatzenbihler
CENTER -- Elizabeth Hatzenbihler, 68, Center, died Dec. 10, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. CST Friday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Center, with burial in Center Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today at the church, where a rosary and vigil will begin at 7 tonight.
Elizabeth was born Sept. 20, 1928, in Oliver County, the daughter of John and Eleanore (Scheetz) Hoffman. She was raised in the area and graduated from Center High School as the valedictorian of the class of 1947. She taught in country schools prior to her marriage to Pete Hatzenbihler, June 15, 1948. Pete died Jan. 24, 1988. She enjoyed travel, golf, bowling, playing cards and visiting. She was particularly adept as a gardener.
She was a member of St. Martin Altar Society and North Dakota Right to Life. She was also active in American Cancer Society, the Food Pantry and Country Vittles Buying Club, as well as being a charter member of the Square Butte Creek Golf Club.
She is survived by five daughters and three sons-in-law, Julie Hatzenbihler, Center, Nancy and Dwight Henke, Hazen, Bonnie and Daniel Schwab, Gillette, Wyo., Peggy and Robert Gobar, West Fargo, and Annette Hatzenbihler, Gillette; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Rodney and Mary, and Randy, all of Center, and Brent, Gillette; 11 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Frances Kary, Mandan, Cecelia and M.J. Hatzenbihler, Center, Viola and Mike Himmelspach, Jamestown, Beverly Moon, Roseville, Ga., and Jeanette and Myron Brown, Hensler.

Alfred Bakken
NAPOLEON -- Alfred Bakken, 82, Napoleon, died Dec. 10, 1996, in the Wishek hospital. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. Gary Connors-Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Napoleon Cemetery.
Jean Lang will serve as organist, with special music provided by Danita Bitz. Pallbearers will be his sons, Rodney C., Andrew J., Thomas A., Robert K., and Carlas B. Bakken. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Alfred was born March 14, 1913, in rural Logan County, Cokato Township, northeast of Napoleon. He was the son of Andrew and Beret (Torness) Bakken. Alfred was raised on the family farm and received his education in rural Cokato Township Schools in rural Logan County. He completed his education and continued to live at home and farm with his family. On Sept. 11, 1940, he married Martha Lang at Napoleon. They returned to the Bakken family farm 12 miles northeast of Napoleon, where they lived and farmed until 1972. The couple moved to Napoleon that year and Alfred continued to farm from town until 1981 when he retired. Even though he was retired from the farm continued to play an important part in his life as he continued to check on the farming activities.
Alfred was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Napoleon and served on the Cokato Township Board and the Cokato Township School Board for many years, having served as its president for several years.
He is survived by five sons and four daughters-in-law, Rodney C. and Ardyth, Bothell, Wash., Andrew J. and Sharlene, Napoleon, Thomas A. and Marjorie, Seattle, Robert K., and Carlas B. and Rhonda, all of Bismarck; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Carrie O. Engle, Lisbon, Anna Carlson, Napoleon, and Marie Loiya, Perham, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two grandsons, Jon Paul and Eric Bakken; and one sister, Inga Hardin.
