Kenneth Enyart
RIVERDALE -- Kenneth "Rudy" Enyart, 81, Riverdale, died Aug. 11, 1996, in the Underwood nursing home. Rudy was born June 11, 1915, in Stanton. He attended the Deapolis County School near the family homestead southeast of Stanton, and high school in Puyallup, Wash., where he worked in berry fields and lived with his oldest sister.

After several trips across country as a "hobo" riding the rails, he returned to the farm to help his father and mother during the 1930s. Rudy married Sylvia Gramm, May 18, 1940, at Stanton. They continued to farm with his mother, Laverna, during the 1940s and 1950s. In addition to farming, Rudy and Sylvia pursued a broad variety of other ways to support a family of eight children. Rudy, with the help of creative friends, built two stern-wheel ferry boats and operated them on the Missouri River below and above the confluence of the Knife River from 1943-1956. During the early construction years at the Garrison Dam, Rudy piloted tug boats ferrying heavy equipment, material and construction workers across the Missouri.

He was also a heavy equipment operator and a life member of the Union of Operating Engineers, Local No. 49. Rudy's 40 years of heavy equipment operating took him from dam building, to defense installations, to refinery turn-arounds, to power plant construction, to the excavation of the original well on the farmstead where he was born (site of Basin Electric's Leland Olds Power Plant). He retired from construction work in 1984. Rudy and Sylvia also built fiber glass boats, operated service stations in Pick City and Riverdale, and owned and operated a laundromat in Stanton.

Rudy served as mayor of Stanton for 12 years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, Shriner and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, designing and building innovative machines (self-loading boat trailer), speculating about abstract concepts (nature and cause of cancer), flying and fellowship in the El Zagal Temple and Masons. Most of all, he enjoyed the company of many good friends he met and kept over the years. Their visits invariably took them back to some adventure that made them laugh in a way that only those who were there could appreciate, and indeed they did!

Besides those many friends who will miss him dearly, Rudy is survived by his wife, Sylvia; two sons, Warren, and Winston and Linda, all of Bismarck; five daughters, Scarlett and Jerry Horning, Detroit Lakes, Minn., Carrie Simpfenderfer and Leon, Stanton, Grace and Byron Fretty, Big Lake, Minn., Jessie and Sam Fears, Washburn, and Sally Jane and Charlie Sorensen, Hensler.

He also had a great deal of affection for Joyce Enyart and Mike Quinn, whom he still considered members of his family.

Rudy donated his remains to the School of Medicine at the University of North Dakota. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Stanton.

Rudy was preceded in death by his son, Wakely, who died of cancer in 1983. His father, David Warren Enyart, who died in 1935, and his mother, Laverna Belle Jones, who died in 1959. Rudy was the last member of his family of four brothers, Hugh, David, Jesse and Glenn; and three sisters, Emma, Edna and Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Shriner's Burn Institute or Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital. Checks to either may be sent to the attention of Jean at El Zagal Temple, 1429 N. Third St., Fargo, 58102.
