Grace C. Starck
Grace C. Starck, 78, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, formerly of 222 W. Broadway Ave., died April 3, 1997, in the nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Stephen Wisthoff and Stanley Malmgren officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Boelter Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Grace was born Dec. 25, 1918, in Naughton Township, northeast of Bismarck, the daughter of Emil W. and Elna G. (Johnson) Johnson. She grew up on her parents' farm and was educated in rural Naughton schools. After moving to Bismarck with her parents in 1934, she worked for Capital Laundry and Perfection Cleaners. Grace was a Corps Cadet in the Salvation Army and sang and played the mandolin with the Johnson Family Gospel Orchestra for church events and local radio in the 1940s.

She was active in the First Baptist Church of Bismarck for many years. For the past two years, she was a resident of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck.

She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Rick and Carla, Minneapolis, Ron and Denise, Bismarck, and Curtis, Bismarck; one daughter, Susan Starck, Bismarck; two grandchildren, Avonna and Richard Starck, Minneapolis; one brother and sister-in-law, Emil and Ruth Johnson, Bismarck; and one sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and Steve Cormier, North Glen, Colo. These and many others have been blessed to share her life and love.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, LeRoy Oscar Johnson.

The family prefers memorials to Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center.

Paul W. Hanson
Paul W. Hanson, 70, 1930 E. Capital Ave., died April 3, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at McCabe United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Peary Wilson officiating.

Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. today and 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Paul was born Aug. 31, 1926, at LaMoure, the son of Paul and Mae (Hopewell) Hanson. He was raised on the family farm in Hanson Township of Ransom County. He attended school in Verona, and graduated from Lisbon High School. Paul married Vi Stave June 6, 1948. They moved to Fargo. They moved to Bismarck in 1952, establishing their home and raising their family. He retired from Prudential Insurance Co. after 25 years. Paul had many hobbies and interests throughout the years, beekeeping, fishing and traveling. He was a member of Bismarck Elks Lodge and McCabe United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two sons, Kent and Kevin, both of Bismarck; two daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie and Ferris Wiens, Harrisburg, S.D., and Luann and Ken Thompson, New Rockford; one grandson, Jared Thompson; four granddaughters, Lynette Kraft, Nicole and Caytie Hanson, and Kimberly Thompson; one sister, Marjorie Small, Anoka, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vi; one daughter, Lynette; his parents; and one sister, Carol McGraw.

The family prefers memorials to McCabe United Methodist Church sprinkler fund.

Lucille Chambers
Lucille Chambers, 75, Lakewood, Colo., formerly of Bismarck, died April 2, 1997, in a Denver hospital. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Peary Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Lucille Morton was born Nov. 24, 1921, in Bismarck, the daughter of Clarence and Janette (Hart) Morton. She was raised and educated in Bismarck, and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1939. While attended Bismarck High School, she starred in numerous school musical productions. She was employed as head cashier at Montana-Dakota Utilities prior to her marriage to Wm. Russell Chambers. They were married on Nov. 24, 1945, at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck.

Russell preceded her in death May 3, 1979. She was a member of McCabe United Methodist Church, the Chancel Choir and Thursday Music Club. She was a soprano soloist for numerous choir presentations until retiring in 1990. Lucille was also a member of the Civic Music Club that presented musicals at the city auditorium.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Katherine, Denver; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Lawrence Knapp, Arvada, Colo.; two grandsons, William and Michael Knapp; and a great-grandson, Derek, all of Arvada; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Marie and Clayton Bartz, Beach, and Ruth Anne Morton, Germany; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Arlene, Houston; and two sisters-in-law, Elaine Kupper, Billings, Mont., and Fern and her husband, Lew Carlson, Camas, Wash.

Luella Pfeifer
MCCLUSKY -- Luella Pfeifer, 76, McClusky, died April 3, 1997, in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, McClusky, with burial in McClusky Cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m.-noon Monday at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Luella Haux was born June 5, 1920, on the family farm northwest of McClusky, to Christ and Katie Haux. She grew up and attended rural school there. She married Prosper Pfeifer on Dec. 9, 1940, at McClusky. They lived on farms in the Goodrich and Lincoln Valley areas before moving to a farm northwest of McClusky in Holmes Township, Sheridan County in 1948. She entered Prairieview Nursing Home in Underwood in 1985.

Luella was very active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League at St. John's Lutheran Church, McClusky, where she was a member. She was also a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary in McClusky.

She especially enjoyed her grandchildren, quilting and embroidering.

She is survived by her husband, Prosper; one daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Dale Froemming, Elgin; two grandchildren, Cordell Krein, and his wife, Joy, and Cheryl and her husband Kevin Fitzgerald; two great-grandchildren, Leighel Fitzgerald and Brandon Krein; four brothers, LaVern, Jamestown, Emil, Billings, Mont., Melvin and Roland, both of Bismarck; and one sister, Regina Cook, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Harold and Ervin; and one sister, Lucille.

Hulda Jesser
MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Hulda Jesser, 84, Moorhead, died April 3, 1997, in the Moorhead nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Haut Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with burial in Streeter Cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Delton, Moorhead, and Clinton, DeKalb, Ill.; and two sisters, Martha Grenz, Bismarck, and Freda Dockter, MeQuon, Wis.

Vieno Lehto
Vieno Justine Lehto, 85, Bismarck Baptist Home, formerly of Wing, died April 3, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Bismarck Baptist Home Chapel, with the Rev. Muriel Lippert-Schauer officiating. Burial will be in Ahola Cemetery, rural Wing.

Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. today and 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, and will continue at the nursing home one hour before services.

Vieno was born July 25, 1911, at Arena, the daughter of Victor and Marja (Kallio) Koski. She was raised and educated in the Arena area, where she attended grade school. She graduated from Bismarck Business College in 1927.

Vieno married John Emil Lehto Sept. 28, 1931, in Bismarck. They lived and farmed on the Lehto family farm in Wing until 1980, when they retired and moved to Bismarck. She translated the Finnish language to English for the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and correspondence to others.

She was a member and Sunday school teacher at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Wing, Bethlehem Lutheran Church Women's Organization, Wing Homemakers Club, Farmers Union, and served as Wing Township Treasurer.

She is survived by her husband, Emil; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Ted Ryberg, Arena, and Ellen and Jerry Liddle, West Fargo; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Martha Kytonen, New York Mills, Minn., Helen Johnson, Tioga, and Rauha and Marvin Schumaier, Coleharbor; one brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Della Koski, Arena; four grandsons and two granddaughters-in-law, Mark and RaShell Ryberg, Corey Ryberg, Greg Liddle, and Tim and Jessica Liddle; one step-great-granddaughter, Mikayla Christensen; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Kenneth; and three brothers, Arvo, Laurie and William.

Herbert Songstad
Herbert A. Songstad, 85, of Max, died April 5, 1997, at Prairie View Nursing Home in Underwood. Funeral services will be at 1-30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Max, with the Rev. Julie Hogie officiating. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at the Thompson Funeral Home in Max. Burial will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Max.

He is survived by six nephews and six neices. (Thompson Funeral Home, Max)

Lawrence Johnson
KINTYRE -- Lawrence E. Johnson, 64, Kintyre, died April 6, 1997, in his home. Arrangements are pending at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon.

Timothy Aune
Timothy Allen Aune, 35, Bismarck, died April 6, 1997, in his home. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Bismarck Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place.

Timothy was born July 13, 1962, in Mandan, to Robert and Barbara "Bobbie" Aune. He attended Mandan schools and graduated from Bismarck State College in auto body repair in 1982. Tim had been working with auto body repair since graduation, and at the time of his death, he was employed at Pro One Auto in Mandan.

Timothy is survived by his parents, Robert and Barbara, Mandan; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Tammy and Mark Petesch, Bismarck, Tracey Lowther and her friend, Mike Witte, Bloomington, Minn., and Michael Lowther, Prior Lake, Minn.; and various aunts and uncles.

Kenneth Hedman
SCRANTON -- Kenneth Wilmer Hedman, 84, Scranton, died April 4, 1997, in Santa Clarita, Calif. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. MDT Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church, Scranton, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Fran; two daughters, Faye White, Santa Clarita, and Kaye Olson, Bismarck; and two sons, Aldon, Naperville, Ill., and Calvin, Santa Clarita.

Ericka Gondringer
TURTLE LAKE -- Ericka Gondringer, 90, Parshall, formerly of Turtle Lake, died April 5, 1997, in the Parshall nursing home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Katherine's Catholic Church, Turtle Lake. Further arrangements are pending at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake.

Emma Roberts
Emma Roberts, 92, Mandan, died April 5, 1997, in the Mandan nursing home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending.

Margie Bail

She is survived by her husband, Orville; one son, Brandon, Morristown; one daughter, Barbara Bail, Fargo; her mother, Mary Johnson, Napoleon; two brothers, James and Robert Johnson, both of Bismarck; and three sisters, Ginger Bendickson, Thief River Falls, Minn., Charlette Abbas, Renville, Minn., and Brenda Eichele, Driscoll. Lydia Hanson
CARRINGTON -- Lydia Hanson, 85, Carrington, died April 2, 1997, in the Carrington nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington, with the Revs. Peter and Karla Coen-Tuft officiating. Special music will be by James Semmens, with Clara Edwardson, organist. Burial will be in Carrington Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dale Townsend, Gerald Berglun, Olaf Ringerud, Walter Nystuen, Orvel Baldwin and Merle Bauer.

Lydia Ione Wahl Hanson was born May 9, 1911, at Martin, the eldest daughter of Andrew and Pauline (Grabofsky) Pepple. The family moved to Denhoff, where she was raised and attended school. She graduated from Denhoff High School and received a teaching certificate from Valley City Teachers College. On March 4, 1933, she was united in marriage to Emil C. Wahl. She taught school in Goodrich and held other jobs during the early years of her first marriage. In the mid 1940s she began working in the McClusky Post Office and worked there for nearly 30 years. She became the postmaster during the last three years of her career. Mr. Wahl died March 17, 1960.

On June 1, 1969, she was united in marriage to Norman Hanson at McClusky. Since 1974 she has made her home at Carrington. Lydia had many interests and was involved in a number of organizations. She held state and national offices in several of those organizations. Among her interests were Sheridan County Chapter of American Red Cross, state president of the American Legion Auxiliary, North Dakota Federation of Music Club, Order of the Eastern Star, Tri-County Retired Teachers Association, Foster County Centennial Committee, Elks Auxiliary, Carrington Hospital and Home Auxiliary and Heart and Muscular Dystrophy Association.

She is survived by her loving husband, Norman H.; one son, Dr. Dewey Wahl, Dallas; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Dr. Robert Sigsby, The Woodlands, Texas; two stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Bonnie and Willie Heinrich, Bismarck, and Beverly and Jerry Franzen, Oregon City, Ore.; three grandchildren, Dr. Linda Harris and her husband, John, Bret Sigsby and his wife, Ruth, and Nicole Sigsby; one step-granddaughter, Elizabeth Miller; one great-granddaughter, Lauren Harris; one brother, Raymond Pepple, Steele; three sisters, Betty Lynch, Cheney, Wash., Alma Fuller, Spokane, Wash., and Ruth Kowalski, Chicago; three stepbrothers, Herbert Poppke, David Poppke and Walter Poppke; and five stepsisters, Martha Wentz, Pauline Purdy, Leone Dodge, Irene Carter and Esther Charlesbois.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Frederick and Andrew Pepple; two stepbrothers, John and Theodore Poppke; and her first husband, Emil C. Wahl. (Evans Funeral Home, Carrington)

Herbert A. Songstad, 85, of Max, died April 5, 1997, at Prairie View Nursing Home in Underwood. Funeral services will be at 1-30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Max, with the Rev. Julie Hogie officiating. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at the Thompson Funeral Home in Max. Burial will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Max.
