HARVEY -- Mary Haux, 90, Harvey, died April 13, 1997, in the Harvey nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Bethel Baptist Church, Harvey. Further arrangements are pending at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Albert Rath
Albert H. Rath, 85, Valley City, formerly of Tappen, died April 12, 1997, in the Valley City nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tappen, with the Rev. William Russow officiating. Burial will be in Fisher Cemetery, Tappen.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon today at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Albert was born Feb. 12, 1912, in Tuttle, the son of John H. and Magdalena (Vollmer) Rath. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Tuttle. He was raised and educated in rural schools near Tuttle. Albert worked for F.H. Peavey and Sons Elevator Co. Albert married Mary Lang, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Lang, Dec. 22, 1934, in Tappen. He then worked for Farragut, Idaho, Naval Training Station, and Sandpoint, Idaho, in 1942. In 1943, they returned to Tuttle and he resumed his job as elevator construction foreman. They moved to Tappen in 1949, where they lived until 1959. They then moved to Hamilton. In 1967, they returned to Tappen and he worked for Jacobson and Sons Construction Co. until an injury forced him to retire. He continued to work in his shop and build items from wood. Albert entered Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City in October 1996.

He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tappen.

Albert is survived by his wife, Mary; one daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Don Winings, Valley City; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Cindy, Bismarck; five grandchildren, Kristy, and her husband Jeff Falstad, LaMoure, Travis and Vicki Winings, Valley City, Mark and Kari Rath, Bismarck, two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Alexis Falstad, LaMoure; two brothers, Jacob, Robinson, and Reinhart, Jordon, Mont.; and two sisters, Lydia Schwindt, Kirkland, Wash., and Erna Schwindt, Jordan, Mont.

Elizabeth Piper
FORT RICE -- Elizabeth Piper, 85, Fort Rice, died April 13, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Hugo Blotsky officiating. Burial will be in Fort Rice Cemetery at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A rosary and vigil will be said at 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Metzner was born Aug. 26, 1911, on the family farm near Fort Rice. She was the daughter of Joseph and Tina (Howorth) Metzner. She was raised and educated in the area, and married George A. Piper, June 15, 1929, in Mandan. They farmed south of Fort Rice for many years before moving into Fort Rice in 1976. George died Feb. 5, 1979. A strong and independent lady, Lizzie continued to live in her own home, where she enjoyed the time she spent caring for her flowers and welcoming visitors until the time of her death.

She is survived by two daughters, Millie Ritter, San Jose, Calif., and Betty Pivovaroff, Lancaster, Calif.; three sons, George Jr., Newburg, Ore., and Robert and Bernard, both of Mandan; 21 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Kathryn Schultz, Mandan; and four brothers, Joe, Bemidji, Minn., George, Gig Harbor, Wash., Bernie, Mandan, and Steve, Fort Rice.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one grandson, Robert Piper; three sisters, Theresa Metzner, Madge Metzner and Louise Schaff; and two brothers, Sam and John.

Ellen Pedersen
GRENORA -- Ellen B. Pedersen, 86, Grenora, more recently of Bethel Lutheran Home, Williston, died April 14, 1997, in the Williston hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Grenora, with the Rev. Betty Czubay officiating. Burial will be in Grenora Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Ellen Berntina Johnson was born Dec. 2, 1910, on the family farm near West Bonetraill, the daughter of Hans P. and Sena (Grindeland) Johnson. She was raised on the farm and educated in the Scandinavia Valley School, often called the Hagbo School. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Petri Lutheran Church.

On June 22, 1929, Ellen was married to Elmer Q. Pedersen at Westby, Mont. They made their home and farmed north of Grenora in Fertile Valley Township, Divide County, and continued to farm after moving into Grenora in 1945. Over the years, Ellen was employed at the Grenora Food Market, Grenora Mercantile and a local cafe.

She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, Church choir and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She also was a 4-H leader, Farmers Union Youth Leader, member of the Grenora election board, treasurer of Grenora Senior Citizens, served on the rural library board and a was a member of the Rebekkah Lodge. Ellen was a gracious hostess who made everyone feel welcome with a ready smile, a hot cup of coffee and cookies.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Harvey and Shirley, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, JoAnne and Gerald Christensen, Williston; one sister, Palma Grodt, Williston; six grandchildren, Allen Pedersen and his wife, Avis, Bismarck, Steven Christensen and his wife, Laura, Williston, Jill Christensen, Williston, Craig Christensen, Detroit Lakes, Minn., James Pedersen and his wife, Carrie, Vance AFB, Okla., and Janelle Jones and her husband, Harley, Bismarck; and one great-granddaughter, Sally Pedersen, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, on Jan. 28, 1994; one son, Elmer Jr.; and six brothers, Palmer, Edwin, Julius, Joseph, Alvin and Harry.

William Wall Jr.
William Wall Jr., 77, died March 18, 1997, in Chula Vista, Calif. He had been sick for three years with cancer. Burial was March 22 in Glen Abbey Memorial Park, California.

He was raised on a farm south of Mercer, the son of William and Katherine (Herman) Wall. He received his education in the rural schools south of Mercer and had served in the military.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dorothy; two daughters, Kathryn Bright and Joyce Trayler; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Ruth Wall, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lydia; and four brothers, Rudolph, John, Alain and Theophil.

Genevieve Hansen
WILLISTON -- Genevieve M. Hansen, 89, Williston, died April 13, 1997, in the Williston nursing home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending at Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Leo Grad
HARVEY -- Leo Grad, 69, Harvey, died April 15, 1997, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Harvey, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by one son, Richard, Gresham, Ore.; four sisters, Lena P. Hager, Rose Axtman and Theresa Schwan, all of Harvey, and Betty Rudnick, Anamoose; and four brothers, Edward, Louie and Walter, all of Harvey, and Philip, Martin. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Mary Haux

Simon Iron Cloud
LITTLE EAGLE, S.D. -- Simon Iron Cloud, 69, Little Eagle, died April 11, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church, Wakpala, with burial in Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis.

He is survived by one daughter, Barbra Renville, Little Eagle; two brothers, Vernon, Wakpala, and Melvin, Fort Yates; and one sister, Philomene Bonner, Mobridge. (Kesling Funeral Home, Mobridge)

Nora Knoll
ASHLEY -- Nora Knoll, 75, Ashley, died April 12, 1997, in the Ashley hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Ashley, with burial in Ashley Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband; one son, Gene, Ashley; two sisters, Inez Goehring, Ashley, and Eltina Sayler, Aberdeen, S.D.; and one brother, the Rev. Peter Ackerman, Aberdeen. (Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley)

John Petryszak
DICKINSON -- John Petryszak, 87, Dickinson, died April 14, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at St. Demitrius Ukrainian Catholic Church, rural Belfield. Further arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Charlotte Erman
HARVEY -- Charlotte Erman, 88, Harvey, died April 13, 1997, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Fessenden Public School Gym, with burial in Hillside Cemetery, Fessenden.

She is survived by two sisters, Hattie Eide, Fessenden, and Betty Lou Sanders, Elmira, N.Y. (Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden)

Matt Anheluk
DICKINSON -- Matt Anheluk, 74, Dickinson, died April 12, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Dickinson.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline; four sons, Rodney, Bismarck, Roger and Robert, both of Dickinson, and Richard, Hebron; one sister, Polly Kubisiak, Bentonville, Ark.; and one brother, George, Dickinson. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Benjamin Steinwand
GARRISON -- Benjamin Steinwand, 78, Garrison, died April 13, 1997, in the Garrison nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garrison, with burial in Garrison Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Martha; one daughter, Delilah Schmidtgall, Thief River Falls, Minn.; five sisters, Hannah Reimann, Missoula, Mont., Regina Reimann, and Ramona Reinisch, both of Garrison, Betty Bussmann, and Agnes Hoyer, both of Washburn; and one brother, Wilbert, Garrison. John Petryszak
DICKINSON -- John Petryszak, 87, Dickinson, died April 14, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church, rural Belfield, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, rural Belfield.

He is survived by three daughters, Marge Buresh, Manning, Mary Ann Steffan, Dickinson, and Rose Lefor, Lefor; one son, Michael, Redmond, Wash.; one sister, Kathryn Malkowski, Fairfield; and two brothers, William, Watford City, and Alec, Beulah. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Maggie Haase
ELGIN -- Maggie Haase, 94, Elgin, died April 16, 1997, in the Elgin hospital. Arrangements are pending at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin.

Timothy Geisinger
Timothy Wade Geisinger, 52, Bakersfield, Calif., formerly of Rugby, died of cancer April 11, 1997. Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Peters Funeral Home Chapel, Shafter, Calif.

He is survived by his son, Timothy Jr., Bakersfield; one daughter, Marianne Fenwick, Bakersfield; one brother, Stephen, Bismarck; and one sister, Peggy Miltenberger, Albia, Iowa.

Ida Kessler
STANTON -- Ida R. Kessler, 87, Bismarck, formerly of Stanton, died April 15, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Stanton, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Jeanette Johnson, Mora, Minn.; five sons, Ray, Stanton, Don, Minneapolis, Lloyd, Center, Jim, Miles City, Mont., and Bob, Bismarck; and two sisters, Esther Klein and Louise Schefflemaier, both of Elgin. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

Charles Rodgers
MINOT -- Charles E. Rodgers, 66, Minot, died April 15, 1997, in his home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot, with burial in Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice; five sons, Thomas, Minot, Chuck, Chaska, Minn., Paul, Bismarck, Bob, Littleton, Colo., and Steve, Williston; three daughters, Susan Ebertowski, Bismarck, Kathy Luyten, Minot, and Theresa Colleaux, Redvers, Saskatchewan; and his mother, Esther Rodgers, Minot. Ruth Smith
Ruth McCone Smith, 99, 1155 N. Third St., died April 15, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital after a lingering illness. Graveside services will be at at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Rosehill Cemetery, Camanche, Iowa.

She is survived by one daughter-in-law, Beverly Smith, Bismarck; one granddaughter, Stephanie Smith, Hopkins, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; and her son, F. John.

Anton 'Tony' Klein
Anton "Tony" Klein, 80, 815 W. St. Benedict Drive, died April 17, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church of Corpus Christi, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, where a rosary will be said at 7 tonight.

Anton was born July 8, 1916, at Aberdeen, S.D., the son of Frank and Gertrude (Moch) Klein. He was raised and educated in the Kintyre area. Tony served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1935-1945. He married Barbara M. Ziegler, March 9, 1945. Tony managed the Red Owl Grocery Store at Linton until 1956, and was at the Minot store briefly. He managed a store in Williston until 1972, when they moved to Bismarck and he became commissioner of Workers Compensation until 1977.

Tony enjoyed working with Boelter Funeral Home and Nickisch-Ressler Funeral Home for several years. He enjoyed gardening and visiting with his grandchildren and his friends.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara and Scott Heinert, Bismarck, Toni Anderson, Bismarck, and Donna and Ron Lane, Las Vegas; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Lorri, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Theresa and Kristen Lane, Joseph and Erin O'Brien, Cody Heinert and David Trujillo; two sisters, Margaret Boe, Sidney, Mont., and Maggie Schutt, Strasburg; one brother, George Moch, Bismarck; and one stepbrother, Alex Moch.

Franklin Thomas
Franklin William Thomas, 58, Rapid City, S.D., died April 12, 1997, in the Rapid City hospital. Services were at Campbell, Paula and Quinn Funeral Home, Rapid City. A rosary was said April 14 at the funeral home. The Rev. Peter Kovorik officiated at the service, and burial was April 15 in Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, S.D.

Casketbearers were Mike Boyd, Ricky Law, Pete Snider, Larry Taylor, Dee Harrison and Bill Snider. Honorary casketbearer was Bill Gayton.

Franklin W. Thomas was born July 6, 1958, on Standing Rock Indian Reservation, Fort Yates. He was born to Frank and Margaret (Taylor) Thomas. He grew up and attended school at St. Bernard Mission School for eight years, and at Marty Mission School for four years. He graduated at the age of 17 and enlisted in the Air Force, leaving for the Air Force the day after his graduation. He completed his basic training at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming, and then served at Iwo Jima for two years. He missed the deer meat and all the good homemade meals from home. He enjoyed all the letters from his family. He always ended his letters with May God Bless You, with all my love, Frank. He returned to the states and was stationed at the Air Force Base in Tacoma, Wash., for two years. After four years in the Air Force, he returned home and attended college in Fargo. He worked for Cresent Jewelers in the business department until moving to Spencer, Iowa, in 1964. He worked and lived in Storm Lake, Iowa, until returning to Standing Rock in 1974, where he worked as director for Standing Rock Housing for 13 years. He was with HUD for 10 years and lived and worked in Utah, Arizona and Denver.

He retired from the government at the age of 56 in Denver because of ill health. He moved to Rapid City and started a consultant business, White Buffalo Hunter, as this was his Indian name. In 1974, he shot the buffalo for the powwow on Standing Rock. He was kind, gentle and generous. He'd give you the shirt off his back. He loved our Indian people, always gave the elderly deer meat and fish. He never forgot his roots and where he came from. He loved his family and grandchildren. He loved us all. He met and married Shirley Taylor Thomas in 1960. Four children were born to them.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; two sons, Greg, Rapid City, and Randy, Sioux Falls, S.D.; two daughters, Terri Law, Rapid City, and Debbie Snider, Roy, Utah; one brother, James, Portland, Ore.; and one sister, Arlene M. Ramey, Fort Yates.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Veronica Schwartz
EDGELEY -- Veronica Schwartz, 70, Edgeley, died April 16, 1997, in the Jamestown hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Catholic Church of the Transfiguration, Edgeley, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Edgeley.

Veronica "Verna Mae" Marie Long was born Oct. 31, 1926, in Edgeley, the daughter of Walter H. and Anna C. (Bartosek) Long. She was raised and educated in Edgeley, graduating from Edgeley High School in 1944 as co-valedictorian of her class. Following her graduation, she attended Central Dakota Commercial College in Jamestown. Upon graduating she worked as bookkeeper at Security National Bank in Edgeley and then as a clerk at the Edgeley Post Office from 1947-1954. She married Marvin A. Schwartz, Sept. 5, 1949, in Edgeley. She returned to work for Security National Bank where she was employed until the effects of multiple sclerosis forced her early retirement in 1972.

During the 1960s, she was elected to five consecutive terms as Edgeley City Treasurer. She was a life member of Church of the Transfiguration and was treasurer of Transfiguration Altar Society for a number of years.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters and one son-in-law, Anne Schwartz, Burnsville, Minn., and Gretchen and Charles Joyce, Bismarck; and two granddaughters, Lindsey and Heather Joyce, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her parents. (Lisko Funeral Chapel, Edgeley)
