Dora R. Dick
Lisbon, ND
Funeral services for Dora R. Dick, 92, Lisbon, were held on Friday, February 11, 2005 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon. Reverend Norm Anderson and Reverend David Killeen officiated. Dora died on Monday, February 7, 2005 at Maryhill Manor, Enderlin. Music was provided by organist Cindy Hagel and soloist Joan Montgomery. Pallbearers were Carroll Hanna, Larry Hanna, Bill Hanna, Jerry Hanna, Dennis Dick, Sid Mairs, Ross Cole and Bruce Iserman. Burial was at the Lisbon Oakwood Cemetery.
Dora was born on August 12, 1912 in rural Lisbon the daughter of William and Rose (Schmidtke) Hanna. She attended rural Lisbon school and graduated from Lisbon High School. On March 11, 1933 she married Walter ³Swede² Dick in Britton, SD. Dora taught for two years in Bale Township, rural Lisbon. They farmed near Lisbon until 1964 when they moved into Lisbon. Walter died October 23, 1979. Dora was a member of Parkside Auxiliary, Homemakers Club, Tops and Esther Circle, Trinity Lutheran Church.
Dora is survived by two sons, Gary (Tudy) San Antonio, TX and Keith (Brenda), Lisbon; one daughter, Kay (Roger) Hegle, Dent, MN; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great grandchildren;and five step great grandchildren.
Cecelia Ann Bertha Fernow Oliphant
Cecelia Ann Bertha Fernow Oliphant was born August 12, 1905, in Enderlin, North Dakota, to Ernest Carl and Magdalena Otelia Ufer Fernow. She attended Enderlin High School and graduated from Valley City State Teacher’s College.
In 1932, she married N. Sterling Oliphant, making their first home in Lisbon, North Dakota. They had two children, Ronald and Mary Ann.
She taught in rural schools, Fargo, and West Fargo, North Dakota. Cecelia was an avid gardener, enjoyed sewing, music and painting, and was an active member of the Lutheran Church in communities where she made her home. Cecelia will be especially remembered for her positive outlook and welcoming smile.
In 1992, Cecelia moved to Canton, South Dakota, to live with her daughter where she volunteered in the public schools.
Survivors include daughter Mary Ann Oliphant Siverson, New Mexico and daughter-in-law Marilyn Oliphant, Minneapolis; grandchildren, Thomas Oliphant, Minneapolis; Kathryn Oliphant, Waconia; Karna Oliphant, Minneapolis; Glennis Siverson, Tucson; Jason Siverson, Daejong, North Korea; Sayra Siverson Salter, New Mexico; and great-grandchildren Mason Machtemes, Olivia Siverson Salter, and Sterling Siverson Salter.
A celebration of her life will take place at the Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon, North Dakota, on Friday, August 15, at 2:00pm. Cecelia died on June 2, 2014.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Canton Good Samaritan Center for their loving care the past six years.
Roger W. Shea
Enderlin, ND
Roger W. Shea, 79, Enderlin, ND died on March 29, 2005 at the Maryhill Manor in Enderlin under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Roger was born on October 5, 1925 on the family farm near Sheldon, ND to Matthew and Hattie (Peterson) Shea. He grew up there and attended school. Roger farmed with his father and continued to operate the farm after his father retired. Roger retired in 1995. He moved to Maryhill Manor in September of 2004.
Roger was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sheldon and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He will be remembered for the wonderful care he gave his parents, brother and other relatives. He was a good neighbor and friend to many people.
He is survived by two sisters, Carol (Michael) Sweeney of Fargo and Betty Pollock of Moorhead, MN as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Warren and Gerald.
Instead of flowers the family requests that memorials be given to Hospice, Masses or a charity of your choice.
Funeral Mass was held on Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Fr. John Fallon officiated. Pallbearers were Peter Shea, Paul Bunn, Steve Fleischfresser, Gerald Fleischfresser, Michael Sweeney and Mary Sweeney. Music was by cantor, Kathy Lewis and organist was Carole Bjugstad. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Donald Dagman
Spokane, WA
Donald Dagman passed away in peace on March 19, 2005 in Spokane, WA, his home of 50 years at the age of 90. He was born on February 20, 1915 in Enderlin, ND, the son of David and Sophia Dagman. Don grew up in the North Dakota farm country around Enderlin and graduated from Enderlin High School in 1933. He moved to Portland, OR where he was married to Jacqueline Cruson in 1935. He began working for Shell Oil Company in Portland, then was transferred to Boise and then Spokane in 1955. He retired from Shell as District Manager of the Spokane Region in 1971.
Following his retirement he worked for the Spokane Chamber of Commerce, where he was the director of the Conventions and Visitors Bureau during Expo 74. He also worked for the Hutton Settlement and Playfair Race Course. Don was an active volunteer in many organizations. He was a member of St. John’s Cathedral for 50 years and was a Senior Warden of the Chapter. He was a former president of the Downtown Rotary Club, where he was a 50-year member and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Spokane Lilac Festival Association, where he was president in 1968. He was formerly a docent for the Living Desert of Palm Desert, CA, and especially enjoyed belonging to the SKOL club in Spokane. He had also been the Armed Services committee chairman, a Jr. Achievement board member, St. Luke’s Hospital board of directors member, YWCA board of directors, executive council of the Boy Scouts of America member and he had been on the United Crusade board. “Pops” will be remembered for his wonderful sen

Hazel F. Bonde
Lisbon, ND
The funeral service for Hazel F. Bonde, 84, of Lisbon, ND and formerly Kathryn, ND, will be held on Wednesday, April 6 at 2pm at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Lisbon. Karl Bergh will be in charge of the service. Hazel died on April 3, 2005 in her home in Lisbon.
Hazel was born on September 2, 1920 at Sherwood, ND, the daughter of James and Lulu Dell Rupe Stewart. She attended Sherwood School, graduating from Sherwood High School. She married Clarence Sundby in June, 1940 in Sherwood, ND. They lived on a farm near Mohall, ND. He died September, 1966. After Clarence’s death, Hazel moved to Minot. She married Roy Bonde on August 18, 1973 in Minot, ND and they lived on his farm near Kathryn, ND. In 1992 they moved to Lisbon. She attended Jehovah’s Witness church.
Hazel is survived by her husband, Lisbon; one son, William (Cheryl) Sundby, Puyallup, WA; two daughters, Wanda (Don) Leifson, Ryder, ND and Ila (David) Krause, Flasher, ND; one step-son, Arlen (Michelle) Bonde, Kathryn, ND; 17 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, four brothers and two sisters.
John B. Hardebeck
Lisbon, North Dakota
Funeral services for John B. Hardebeck, 75, Lisbon, ND, were held on Monday, March 28 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Lisbon with Father Andrew Dudzinski officiating. He died on March 24, 2005 at Parkside Lutheran Home in Lisbon.
Carol McCann was organist and Diana Schultz soloist for the service. Pallbearers were Duane Cole, Francis McCann, Mark Feltis, Randy Huether, David Garland, Michael Garland, Bob Garland, and Howard Hoff. Burial was at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery.
John was born on June 25, 1928 in rural Lisbon, the son of Harvey H. and Helen M. Grandadam Hardebeck. He attended St. Aloysius Catholic School, graduating from high school. He married Elaine Waldhalm in Enderlin on August 18, 1951. John worked on the family farm and as a surveyor for the North Dakota Highway Department. He was the Parts Manager at Hanson Motors in Lisbon and worked at Melroe Mfg in Gwinner. From 1982 to the present, he operated J & H Woodshop in Lisbon. He had also managed the Park Pavilion Roller Rink in Lisbon.
John is survived by his wife, Elaine, Lisbon, ND; one daughter, Rita (Robert) Garland, Wilton, Connecticut and one son, Mark of Lisbon, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren; one sister, Mary Kjos, Destin, Florida. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann.
Ethel B. Fernow
Enderlin, ND
Funeral services for Ethel B. Fernow, 96, were held on August 27, 2005 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Enderlin with Father Jerald Finnestad officiating. She died at Maryhill Manor in Enderlin on August 24, 2005. Burial was at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery and pallbearers were Mark Olson, Steve Olson, Paul Olson, Mark Kuhn, Barry Cox and Deon Maasjo. Organist was Sylvia Schlagel and soloist was Lynette Schmitz.
Ethel was born on August 8, 1909 at Millerville, MN, the daughter of Frank and Matilda Bitzan Kuhn. She attended school in Enderlin. She married Gerhard Johnson January 1, 1930 in Enderlin. He died in 1946. She married Harvey A. Fernow on December 7, 1953 in Enderlin. He died July 4, 1996.
Ethel is survived by a daughter, Bunny Olson, of Fargo; nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; a sister, Lorraine Cox, of Fargo. Ethel was preceded in death by two sons, Lewis and Merlin and two brothers, Mark and Walt.
Doris I. Berg
Belgrade, MN
A memorial service for Doris I. Berg, 92, of Belgrade, MN will be held at 2pm Saturday, September 10 at the Fillmore Lutheran Church, rural Enderlin, with Rev. Leon Zavadil officiating. There will be no visitation. Inurnment will be in the church cemetery. Doris died Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at the Belgrade Nursing Home in Belgrade.
Doris Irene Green was born November 21, 1912 in Moore Township, near Enderlin. She was the daughter of Knut and Amanda (Hove) Green. She grew up in Moore Township where she attended school. She was baptized and confirmed at the Fillmore Lutheran Church and in 1928 she graduated from the Enderlin High School. On July 7, 1932 Doris was married to Bjarne Berg in South Dakota. Following their marriage, they farmed near Nome, ND for many years. Bjarne died March 23, 1978.
Doris was a lifetime member of Fillmore Lutheran where she had taught Sunday School and served on the Altar Guild and Ladies Aid. For the past number of years she had lived in Yuma, AZ and before that she spent her summers in North Dakota and wintered in Arizona. Since February she has lived in Belgrade. Doris enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, solving cryptograms, knitting, sewing, and she was an avid basketball fan.
Doris is survived by her son, Charles, Belgrade, MN; daughter, Doris (Wayne) Schoeppach, Belgrade, MN; two grandsons, Doran and Nathan, both of Minneapolis, MN; two granddaughters, Wanda (Dave) Bissonett, Staples, MN and Tammy (Kyle) Quenemoen, New London, MN; and a brother, Morris Green of Fargo, ND. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Robert in 1956; five brothers and two sisters.
Wally Bjerke
Valley City, ND
Wally Bjerke, age 54, of Valley City died Saturday, August 20, 2005 at Valley City. Funeral services were held at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Valley City with Rev. Paul Huso and Rev. Thomas Peterson officiating. Interment was in Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Walter Henry Bjerke Jr., known by everyone as Wally was born Jan. 15, 1951 at Santa Monica, CA. He lived in California until his family moved to Enderlin, ND, where Wally graduated from Enderlin High School in 1969. He then attended NDSU for 2 years before transferring to Valley City State University. Following college he worked for a time with Enterprise Sales Company of Valley City and then began working for Fertilizer Equipment Inc. (FEI) and had been with the company for over 20 years. On June 12, 1982 he was united in marriage to Wanda Dollinger at Fullerton, CA. The couple made their home at Valley City. Wally enjoyed playing softball and golfing with his friends. He was a Bison fan and participated in many of their tailgating events. A native Californian, he was an avid fan of the Dodgers, Rams, and Lakers. Some of his favorite times were taking trips to California to see family and friends and attending sporting events.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda, a brother, Bill (Mary) Bjerke, Glendale, AZ, a sister, Linda (Chuck) Swift, Vancouver, WA; and a nephew and four nieces, Will, Laura, Katie, Tina, and Niki. He was preceded in death by his parents. Wally’s softball team members, FEI co-workers, golfing buddies, Bison Tailgating buddies, and many friends are all considered Honorary Pallbearers.
Gertrude L. Suchla
Sheldon, ND
The funeral service for Gertrude L. Suchla, 72, of Sheldon, ND, was held on Friday, December 9 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sheldon with Father John Fallon officiating. Gertrude died December 5, 2005 at Innovis Hospital in Fargo.
Carole Bjugstad was organist for the service and pallbearers were Arnie Vaplon, Dan Spiekermeier, Greg Bergacker, Hugh Spiekermeier, Jeff Forslund, and Mark Spiekermeier. Honorary pallbearers were the Sheldon Coffee Crew. Burial was at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
Gertrude was born on February 9, 1933 at Anselm, ND, the daughter of Laurence and Virgie Satterlee Kaspari. She attended rural Anselm, ND school and Sheldon High School, graduating in 1950. She married Eugene O. Suchla on June 12, 1952 at Sheldon. He died August 19, 1992. They farmed near Anselm. She was the office manager of GPG Grain Co at Anselm. from 1968 to 1981. They owned and operated the Keg and Kettle in Sheldon from 1981 to 1991. Gertrude worked at the Lisbon Eagles and also did respite care and was a foster parent.
Gertrude is survived by her mother, Virgie Kaspari of Enderlin; five sons, Wayne (Jeannie), Fargo, ND, Joe (Becky), Fargo, ND, Jim (Deyon), Leonard, ND, Todd (Raselle), Sheldon, ND and Steve (Sue), Moorhead, MN; seven grandchildren (3 step); two sisters, Connie (Tom) Spiekermeier, Sheldon, ND and Pat (Chuck) Forslund, Rosemount, MN.
Alice Stensgard
Enderlin, formerly Nome, ND
The funeral service for Alice Stensgard, 95, Enderlin, and formerly of Nome, ND, will be held at 2pm at Armstrong Funeral Home in Enderlin on Wednesday, December 14th. Alice died at Maryhill Manor in Enderlin on December 9, 2005.
Verna Armstrong will be the organist and Jack Armstrong soloist. Burial is at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Valley City, ND.
Alice was born October 15, 1910 at Hawley, MN, the daughter of Jacob and Randi Haugen Abrahamson. She attended rural Hawley, MN school. She married Arthur H. Stensgard in May of 1929 at Fargo. He died in 1993. They lived in Fargo until 1942 when they moved to Valley City. They moved to Nome in 1949.
Alice is survived by six sons: Arthur (Carol), Nome, ND, Charles (LuAnn), Oriska, ND, Jack, Fargo, ND, Allen (Barbara), Enderlin, ND, James (Barbara), Imperial, CA and Harvey (Julie), San Leandro, CA; three daughters: Betty Lee, Nome, ND, Beverly (Guy) Scalise, Carson City, NV, Carol Stensgard, Fargo, ND; 34 grandchildren, 69 great grandchildren, and 14 great, great grandchildren; and one brother, Willard, Anoka, MN. She was preceded in death by a son, Leonard and a daughter, Marie Nelson.
Atha M. Falk
Lisbon, ND
Funeral services for Atha M. Falk, Lisbon, ND, were held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisbon on Saturday, December 3rd with Rev. Norm Anderson and Rev. David Killeen officiating. Jan Hansen was organist and Ruth Larson soloist. Atha died at the age of 94 on November 28, 2005 at Parkside Lutheran Home in Lisbon. Burial was at Stiklestad Cemetery in rural Fort Ransom. Pallbearers were Tyler Falk, Terry Falk, Tiffany Falk, Amanda Falk, Nateal Falk and Carly Falk. Honorary pallbearers were nieces and nephews.
Atha was born November 26, 1911 in rural Fort Ransom, ND, the daughter of Gustav and Iverine Iverson Peterson. She attended Fort Ransom School, graduating from Fort Ransom High School. She also graduated from VCSU. She married George A. Falk on June 12, 1936 at Fort Ransom. He died February 5, 1996. They farmed near Fort Ransom until moving to Lisbon in 1982. She was a member of Progressive Homemakers Club and active in Parkside Auxiliary and Fort Ransom Senior Citizens.
Atha is survived by three sons, Ronald (Janice), Park Rapids, MN, Russell of Fort Ransom, and Arden (Stephanie) Fort Ransom; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren; two sisters, Olga Rasmusson, Fort Ransom and Loiselle (Henry) Dahill of Oregon. She was preceded in death by a son, Gary.
Norris D. Nelson
Lisbon, ND
Funeral service for Norris D. Nelson, Lisbon, ND, was held on Monday, December 5 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Lisbon with Father Jerald Finnestad officiating. Kathy Kwapinski was organist and music was by Sylvia Holmstrom and Christie Urbach. Burial was at St. Aloysius Cemetery. Norris died at the age of 79 on November 30, 2005 at Parkside Lutheran Home in Lisbon.
Pallbearers were Mike Nelson, Paul Nelson, Gregory Rue, John Soderholm, Paul Soderholm, Tim Birkeland, Allen Birkeland, Dan Birkeland, Bruce Birkeland, John Suter, and Warren Wiltse.
Norris was born on March 30, 1926 in Lisbon, the son of John and Marie Cincera Nelson. He attended Lisbon school, graduating from Lisbon High School. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. He married Shirley Birkeland on April 6, 1953 in Warwick, ND. He farmed near Lisbon and started an apple orchard. He also worked at Bobcat in Gwinner and for Utke Well Drilling of Enderlin. They moved to Lisbon in 1976. He was a member of the Eagles and a lifetime member of the VFW. He served as state president of ND Horticulture Society and received the WODARZ award for outstanding achievement in horticulture.
