Marlys Eileen Wertman
Enderlin, ND
Marlys Eileen Wertman, age 85, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at Maryhill Manor, Enderlin, ND, on Monday, July 2nd, 2012, under the care of Hospice.
Marlys was born on March 10th, 1927 to Elmer and Mary (Monshaugen) Opsahl on their family farm in Roslyn, SD. Growing up she loved to help her parents on the farm, especially driving the tractor with her dad. She also loved to sew and bake. She graduated from Roslyn High School in 1945. She moved to Sioux Falls, SD and attended Augustana College. She then got a job at John Morrell, as an office attendant. At night, she worked at The Arcade Ballroom, where she met Don Wertman. They were married in January 1949 in Roslyn, SD. During the next few years, Don and Marlys lived in Flandreau, SD, Dell Rapids, SD, Kidder, SD, and eventually settled in Britton, SD. She worked at the nursing home in Britton, SD for 25 years, until she retired. In 1995, Marlys moved to Enderlin, ND and became a resident at Maryhill Manor in 2009.
Marlys is survived by one son, Larry (Lori) Wertman, Lake City, SD; seven daughters, Bonnie (Allen) Person, Lisbon, ND; Cheryl Losie, St. Paul, MN; Karen Mondor, Enderlin, ND; Donna Blazer, Enderlin, ND; Sharon (Dennis) Andrews, Britton, SD; Mary (Rick) Hock, Lisbon, ND; Gena (Mike) Johnson, Enderlin, ND; 21 grandchildren, 19 greatgrandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She is proceeded in death by her husband, Don; one son, Jerry; her parents, Elmer and Mary; and one brother, James (Shorty) Opsahl; and two son-in-laws, James Losie and Don Blazer.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at the First Lutheran Church in Enderlin with Pastor Frank Dobos officiating. Pallbearers were grandchildren James Person, Jon Person, Chris Jones, Brian Jones, Ricky Glarum, Scott Wertman, Jeff Elijah and Tyler Elijah. Honorary pallbearers were all other grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Music was provided by organist Shirley Hanson amd soloist Nancy Farnham. Burial was held at the Britton Cemetery, Britton, SD.
Quincealea Ann Brunk
Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Quincealea Ann Brunk, 51, was found deceased in her home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on January 26, 2012. Quin had multiple medical problems that contributed to her death.
Quin was born June 18, 1960 in Minot, ND, the oldest of four children to Carol (the former Carol Buss of Sheldon) and Elmer Brunk. She is survived by her mother, Carol Oelke of Mesa, AZ, father Elmer (Cynthia) Brunk of Seattle,WA; a brother Layne (Teresa) Brunk, Wasilla, AL; sister Dawnya (Joe) Reda, Atlanta, GA; two step-brothers and six step-sisters, four nieces and one nephew. She was preceeded in death by her infant sister,Tymphanie, and her step-father, James Oelke, her maternal grandparents, Adeline and Arthur Buss of Sheldon
Quincealea received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Morningside College in Sioux City, IA. Then she received her Master’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Missouri in Kansas City, MO. In 1992 she received her PhD in Nursing from the University of Texas, in Austin, TX.
Research of historical nursing practices and Civil War nursing were her nursing interests. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Russia for a year. She taught in a variety of places throughout the United States, and at the time of her death was teaching in Kaplan University in Cedar Rapids, IA.
A burial of her cremains will be held August 6, 2012 at 2pm at the Sheldon Cemetery.
Mildred O. Johnson
Lisbon, ND
Funeral services for Mildred O. Johnson, 90, of Lisbon, ND, were held Tuesday, January 27 at Armstrong Funeral Home with Pastor Gilbert Richter and Phylis Williams officiating. Charlene Myers was organist and Jeff and Lynette Walker provided the music. Mildred died at Parkside Home in Lisbon on January 24, 2004. Pallbearers were Howard Hoff, Jon Mund, Darin Johnson, Kenneth Coleman, Orville Suhumskie, Charles Hager and Gary Raab.
Mildred was born on July 19, 1913 in rural Englevale, ND, the daughter of Oscar and Mathilda Anderson Christianson. She attended rural Fort Ransom School and High School. She married Harold N. Johnson on May 30, 1939 at Fort Ransom. He died in 1958. They farmed in Springer Township near Lisbon. Mildred worked at the ND Veterans Home in Lisbon for several years. She moved into Lisbon in 1970 and worked as a homemaker for Social Services.
Mildred is survived by two sons, Duane (Linda), Lisbon, and Harvey (Lucy), Thousand Oaks, CA; two daughters, Doris (Gary) Raab, Seattle, WA and Sharon (Charles) Hager, Ventura, CA; 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer (Ginny), Marian, NY, Vernal, Rochester, NY; two sisters, Mabel Thompson, Fingal, ND, and Deloris (Marvin) Mund, Milnor, ND.
Victoria A. Hallmark
Salinas, California
Victoria A. Hallmark, 94, of Salinas, CA, died Saturday, January 10, 2004, at Katherine Care Center, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held on January 15 at Rainbow Chapel-Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, CA.
Victoria was born October 21, 1909 in Enderlin, ND, the daughter of Adolph and Pauline Teske. Victoria was an older sister of Mrs. Elmer ‘Lucille’ Utke, who lived north of Enderlin and moved to Sedona, AZ in 1970.
Victoria was a school teacher before retiring. She taught school in a one-room school house for eight years in South Dakota, teaching all eight grades. In 1958, she began teaching in a Lutheran elementary school, which lasted for three years. She worked for the Southern California Automobile Club, where she retired after 14 years. She then worked for the South Gate Police Department as a school crossing guard for nine years. She later moved to Salinas to be closer to her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. She helped her daughter’s family in many ways.
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading and gardening. She was a member of Lutheran Church of Our Savior, where she sang in the choir and led a Bible study group. She participated in a sewing group, making baby quilts and lap robes.
Victoria is survived by daughter, Linda (Bob) Ayars, Salinas, CA; sister, Lilly Gosnell, Mansfield, TX; brother, Harold (Jean) Teske, Montebello, CA; granddaughter, Elizabeth Victoria Ayars, Albuquerque, NM; eight nieces and nephews and nine grand-nieces and nephews.
Memorial gifts are to be sent to the Kindergarten School Project at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Salinas.
Grace Carlson
Enderlin, ND
The funeral for Grace Carlson, of Enderlin, North Dakota, formerly of Milnor, North Dakota were held on Saturday, January 17, 2004, at the Milnor Lutheran Church in Milnor, with Reverend Mike Toomey officiating. Burial was at the Whitestone Hill Cemetery, near Milnor.
Grace Isabel Stanley, daughter of Mark and Nita (Cross) Stanley was born on October 30, 1914, near Milnor, North Dakota. She was raised in the Milnor area and attended Sydna Consolidated School. Grace was united in marriage to Johnnie Carlson on January 6, 1932, in Britton, South Dakota. The couple lived in the Milnor area, where Grace was one of the first cooks in the Milnor School hot lunch program. In 1951, Grace and Johnnie moved to Fargo, where Grace began her 23-year employment with Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota. Johnnie died in 1966. Upon her retirement, Grace moved back to Milnor and worked as a cook for the Milnor Senior Center for nine years. She continued to live in Milnor before entering the Maryhill Manor in Enderlin, North Dakota in March of 2001. She was a member of the Milnor Lutheran Church.
Grace died on Tuesday, January 13, 2004, at the Maryhill Manor in Enderlin. She was 89 years old.
She is survived by four sons, Donn “Tim” (Bev) Larson and Jerry (Jan) Carlson, all of Enderlin, ND, Larry (Ruth) Carlson, Argusville, ND, and David (Patty) Carlson, Campbells-ville, KY; one sister, Arlene (Wils) Hopkins, Camanche, IA; sixteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Grace was preceded in death by her husband, two daughters, Joan and Jeanette, her parents, two brothers, Ben and Victor, and one sister Amy.
Pallbearers for the funeral were all of Grace’s grandsons: Bruce Larson, Todd Larson, Jack Carlson, Karl Carlson, Joseph Valvo, Patrick Carlson, James Carlson, and Mark Carlson. Bob Schutt was soloist and Carol Ydstie was organist for the service.
Marvin F. Bartle
Enderlin, North Dakota
Funeral services for Marvin F. Bartle, 90, Enderlin, ND, were held on Monday, January 19, 2004 at Anselm Lutheran Church, rural Enderlin with Rev. Mike Toomey officiating. Janet Froemke was organist and Paul Billing soloist. Burial was at the Enderlin Cemetery. Pallbearers were Vernon Bartle, Mike Bartle, Wayne Heinrich, Scott Johnson, Stuart Syverson and Marlow Johnson. Marvin died at Maryhill Manor in Enderlin on January 16, 2004.
Marvin was born on January 15, 1914 in Dubuque, IA, the son of Benjamin F. and Ella Hird Bartle. He attended Edgeley, ND and Edgeley High School. Marvin worked at Farmer’s Union Oil in Edgeley and then moved to Valley City where he worked at Farmer’s Union Oil. He returned to farm near Edgeley until his marriage to Rose Johnson on June 19, 1949 at Fort Ransom, ND. They farmed near Enderlin. Marvin was named Ransom County Man of the Year in 1991. He served as Casey Township treasurer for 18 years, served for many years on the Farmer’s Credit Union Board and Oil Board. He served on Anselm Lutheran Church Council for several years and was a leader of Liberty Livestock 4-H Club.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Rose, Enderlin; two sons, Steven (Roene), Quincy, IL and Mark, Enderlin; one daughter, Kaylyn (Richard) Anderson, Litchville, ND; three grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren; and two great grandchildren and 9 step-great grandchildren; 4 brothers, Art (Adeline), Billings, MT, Bill (Carol), Billings, MT, Fred (Gert), Edgeley, ND, and Vernon (Faye), Edgeley, ND; one sister, Ruby Bartle, Bismarck, ND.
Rhea C. Wadeson
Fargo, ND
The funeral for Rhea Wadeson, age 99, of Bethany Towers II, Fargo, ND was held on Monday, January 19, 2004 at the Mavis Whiting Chapel at Bethany Homes in Fargo with the Rev. Phil Larson officiating. Music by soloist, Craig Olson and organist, Ruth Fossum. The interment will be at Buffalo (ND) Cemetery.
Rhea Crystal Juno was born on August 25, 1904 in Rich Township near Ayr, ND and attended school in Ayr. Rhea married Charley Wadeson on February 11, 1925 in Fargo. They farmed in the Alice, ND area for fifty years. Charley died in 1975. Rhea continued to live on the farm until 1997 when she suffered a stroke. She then entered Bethany Towers where she resided until her death on Wednesday, January 13, 2004.
She was a member of the Alice Moravian Church and the Alice Senior Citizens.
Rhea is survived by a daughter, Doris Betcher of Minnetonka, MN; two grandsons, Randy (Marcy) Betcher and Tom Betcher; two great grandchildren, Andrew and Kira; one brother, Walter of Spokane, WA; sister-in-law, Louise Johnson of Elbow Lake, MN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charley; two sisters, Gladys and Thressa; and a brother, Glenn.
Pallbearers were Randy Betcher, Tom Betcher, Don Wadeson, Kevin Johnson, Randy Laufenberg and David Wikholm.
John D. “Buzzy” Gilbert
Lisbon, North Dakota
Funeral services for John D. “Buzzy” Gilbert, Lisbon, ND, will be held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church of Lisbon on Thursday, January 22 at 10:30am, with Father Andrew Dudzinski officiating. John died at the age of 74 on January 18, 2004 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND. Organist will be Carol McCann and soloist Sylvia Holmstrom. Pallbearers will be Neil Gilbert, Paul Gilbert, Shane Gilbert, Jaime Thompson, Chad Gilbert, Scott Gilbert, Laura Mittet and Beth Mittet. Burial will be at the St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery.
John was born on May 6, 1929 in Lisbon, the son of Lyndon A. and Rose Haecherl Gilbert. He attended rural Lisbon and St. Aloysius Catholic School in Lisbon. He married Rosie M. Ries on November 25, 1950 in Lisbon. They farmed near Lisbon.
John is survived by his wife Rosie; two sons, Greg (Joanne), Waubun, MN and Danny (Connie), Lisbon; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren; one brother, James (Marthanna), Enderlin, ND and Winnefred Vogel of Fargo, ND.
Dorothy Bacheller
Santa Barbara, CA
Dorothy Bangert Bacheller, Santa Barbara, CA, passed away January 15, 2004, at her home with her family at her side.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dr. Stephen C. Bacheller; her parents, Charles and Elizabeth Bangert; brother, Harold; and sister, Constance.
She will be missed by her family, daughters, Starr Garvey (Jack) and Jane Habermann (Norm); her grandchildren, Stephen C. Brillhart and Lisa Lafaille (Mark), Scott Habermann, Brett Habermann; and two great-grandchildren, Kate and Lauren Lafaille.
She was born January 9, 1915, in Enderlin, ND, and lived there most of her life. She graduated with honors from the University of North Dakota in 1937, and was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority.
She married Stephen Collins Bacheller in Chicago, IL, on Thanksgiving Day in 1937, exactly ten years from the Thanksgiving Day they met in Winter Haven, FL, when they were children. After Dr. Bacheller completed his medical training in Chicago, they settled in Enderlin where they lived until moving to Santa Barbara, CA, in 1973, to be near their daughters. In semiretirement, Dr. Bacheller served as a physician in the St. Francis emergency room for six years. During that time, Dorothy was a member of the St. Francis Hospital Guild and volunteered in the St. Francis gift shop and patient’s library.
In North Dakota, Dorothy was an active volunteer in many organizations including serving on a committee of four to construct a city swimming pool. She was District and State President of the Auxiliary to the North Dakota State Medical Association and Regional Vice President of the Auxiliary to the American Heart Association. It was quite an accomplishment for a country doctor’s wife.
She was an avid golfer, having a membership in three North Dakota golf clubs at once and for years was a member of the Women’s group at Santa Barbara Golf Club. She has the distinction of making six official holes in one.
She was a prolific writer of letters to the editors of newspapers and national magazines as well as to U.S. Presidents. She was published many times in the SB News Press and other publications. Her keen interest in current affairs never diminished throughout her life and always kept her grandchildren on their toes!
According to her wishes, her family will be scattering her ashes at sea.

Patricia J. Olson
Fargo, ND
Funeral services for Patricia J. Olson, Fargo and formerly of Lisbon, ND, were held at Lisbon Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. David Killeen officiating. She died at the age of 77 on January 7, 2004 at Elim Care Center in Fargo. Burial was at Homer Cemetery, rural Pierpont, SD. Pallbearers were Jeff Olson, Drew Olson, Blayne Olson, Shawn Olson, Craig Olson, Brian Olson, Justin Henricks, Anthony Kalvoda and Ryan Kalvoda. Honorary pallbearer was Eric Haarsager. Cindy Hagel was organist and soloists were Jessica Rose Kalvoda and Arlys Carter.
Patricia was born on August 14, 1926 at Pierpont, SD, the daughter of William and Minnie Johnson Cameron. She attended the Pierpont, SD school. She married William Olson on June 7, 1943 in Webster, SD. They lived in various locations in South Dakota, Montana and North Dakota before moving to Lisbon in 1971. Pat worked as a Home Care Specialist for Ransom County Social Services for 25 years before retiring in 1999.
Patricia is survived by three sons, William, Grove City, MN, Richard (Diana), Miltona, MN and Steven (Sharon), Atwater, MN; four daughters, Kathleen (Merle) Hedland, Naperville, IL, Cheryl (Tony) Kalvoda, Mandan, ND, Kim (Todd) Haarsager, Fort Ransom, ND and Patricia (Lance) Larson, Casselton, ND; 21 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; two brothers, William (Macel) Cameron, Faulkton, SD and Dean (Opal) Cameron, Moorhead, MN. She was preceded in death by Genevieve, Lucille, Robert, Rodney, Kenneth and Curtis.
Helen Joan Lund
Wahpeton, ND
Funeral services for Helen Joan Lund, Wahpeton, ND and formerly of Lisbon, ND, were held at Lisbon First United Methodist Church with Rev. Beth Conrad officiating. Helen died at the age of 74 on January 6, 2004 at St. Catherine’s Living Center in Wahpeton, ND. Mary Jo Smith was organist and Joan Montgomery soloist. Pallbearers were John Drewlow, Joe Wheeler, Charles Brosowske, Mitch Rhodenbaugh, Jay Rhodenbaugh, Sebrina Rhodenbaugh and Derek Rhodenbaugh. Burial was at Stiklestad Cemetery in rural Fort Ransom.
Helen was born on June 11, 1929 in rural Wyndmere, ND, the daughter of Francis and Faye Higgins Rhodenbaugh. She attended Wyndmere school. She married Frank Olson; he died August 3, 1982. Helen lived in Minneapolis where she worked as a nanny for several years. She then moved to Michigan City, IN., where she worked as a nanny. She moved to San Francisco, CA, to care for her aunt. She returned to Wyndmere to live with her mother. After her marriage to Frank, they lived in Lisbon where she continued to live until moving to St. Catherine’s Living Center in Wahpeton. She married Elmer O. Lund on December 18, 1994 in Lisbon. He died August 26, 1999.
Helen is survived by one brother, Dean, Brazoria, TX; two sisters, Carol Yeater, Highland Village, TX, Merle Marquiss, Michigan City, IN. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Douglas and Keith and a nephew, Bradley.
Fred G. Ward
Fort Ransom, ND
Funeral services for Fred G. Ward, 92, were held on Saturday, January 10 at Standing Rock Lutheran Church, Fort Ransom, with Rev. David Carlson officiating. Mary Johnson was organist. Burial was at Standing Rock Lutheran Cemetery with Bryan Olson, Brent Olson, Wayne Gronbeck, Sid Schmidt, Bradley Ward and Clayton Wieser serving as pallbearers. Fred died on January 7, 2004 at St. Catherine’s Living Center in Wahpeton.
Fred was born on March 5, 1911 at Lidgerwood, ND, the son of George and Mary Putman Ward. He attended school in the Lidgerwood/ Hankinson area. He married Hazel R. Enfield on September 7, 1931 at Park Rapids, MN. She died May 16, 1992. They farmed near Hankinson for several years. Fred also rode broncs in rodeos and trained horses. They moved to Fort Ransom in 1953. Fred owned and operated Fred’s Corral for 10 years and he also collected and sold guns and antiques.
Fred is survived by one daughter, Doraine (Kermit) Olson, West Fargo, ND; six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; a sister, Georgie (Bill) Wieser, Hankinson, ND. He was preceded in death by a son, Marlin and a daughter-in-law, Lucy Ward of California.
